Creighton (2-0) vs. Nebraska (1-1) Game Thread
millerhusker replied to Bugeaters1's topic in The Haymarket Hardwood
Right. We don’t even need a point guard that creates for others. Just need one to make the first freaking pass to initiate the offense. We were fun to watch last year when Dalano got benched and Teddy left. Trey made the first pass and Kobe, Thor and Lat played the .5 basketball that Hoiberg wants - within half a second after catching the ball, either shoot it, pass it or make a straight line drive to the rim. Why it’s so hard for our coaches to get some players to play that way, I don’t know. -
One thing that kept me excited to watch the games through all those losing seasons was when we had a group of underclassmen look the part, seeing them progress and projecting how our team would look in the future. Like when Muhleisen was a stud freshman and Turek and Simms also looked promising, then Wilkinson coming on board the next year. Or when Maric and McCray were freshmen. Or when Bear Jones, Standhardinger and Jorge Brian Diaz were freshmen. Right now, we’ve got 5 freshman (yeah, 3 are covid freshman) and a sophomore who all still look promising to me. Odds are some of them won’t be here next year. But it looks like a group of guys that can lay the foundation and we can build around them going forward.

That was Walker's worst game as a Husker. Zero points on offense and Kalkbrenner made him look like a mediocre defender and rebounder. Lat made some threes, but was very poor defensively and is still a liability if he puts the ball on the floor. We were better with Eduardo and/or Breidenbach on the court. We were obviously better with Kobe and CJ on the court. The ball actually moved around and we played with a purpose. Trey has a broken foot. I say throw Kobe out there with 4 freshmen - CJ, Bryce, Wilhelm and Eduardo - and let them go. Kobe's presence on the court is great for the young guys. He's constantly encouraging and giving constructive criticism. I loved how he wouldn't let Eduardo complain to the ref after a foul. Those 4 freshman play hard, have talent and just need some time and repetition to learn how to play at this level. Keon and Keisei, as well. Play the young guys and don't process ANY of the underclassmen after the season. Stick with them and let's build an actual team. As Husker fans, we don't even need to win. We're used to losing. We just want a team that's enjoyable to watch and easy to root for.

Not just better, but more poised and mature as a freshman than Verge as a 5th year senior. -

Anytime we get some momentum Creighton just keeps answering. -

Bryce needs to finish that. Had a simple layup but was expecting contact. Just go up strong and finish. -

There's a difference between building a team and just accumulating talent. I don't know how to get talented but selfish players to start playing as a team. But I'd rather watch competitive basketball with guys like Kobe, Thor, Eduardo, etc than the brutal product we put on the floor with guys like Cam, Teddy and Verge. The good news is, I think Bryce, CJ and Wilhelm have a mix of talent, toughness and selflessness. Now we just need to keep building on that year to year, as opposed to accumulating a new group of talent each year. -

Creighton showing us how to move the ball until you get an open look. Nebraska is easy to defend. -

Transition defense not good so far. Why does Walker look like he’s not trying? -

Looked like Trey had some choice words for Verge during the timeout -

Why do shooters unlearn how to shoot when they get to Lincoln? During halftime, Kesei shot 15 to 20 threes. And made two. -

Last year's late season lineup of Trey, Kobe, Thor, Lat and Walker would dominate Western Illinois and Sam Houston St. -
Need to commend Western Illinois on how they defended our pick n roll. The easy buckets at the rim for Verge and Walker out of our pick n roll in the two exhibition games was really what opened things up for the shooters to get going. Rob Jeter (he was kinda on our list after Doc was fired, right?) had his guys just sit back in the paint and simultaneously take away the roll man and Verge's path to the rim. They dared Verge and Bryce to take mid-range jumpers, as I'm sure Jeter knows that's what Hoiberg wants to avoid. Verge and Bryce were a combined 4-15 on "far 2's". Guessing Fred is upset about that, since he'd prefer to take zero far 2's. This is a game we could've really used a pick n pop threat, but Lat was hurt and Wilhelm really struggled.

Update: the players are all posting their flashy highlights repeatedly on social media. I just don't get that mentality. They should be pissed and embarrassed. I don't buy that it's just a generational thing either. There are plenty of players today who care about winning. Last night, Jaden Ivey (Purdue) had a freaking in-game windmill dunk. Then he sprinted back on defense and acted like it's just what's supposed to happen.

Sweet dunk. But our players care more about the dunk than winning the game. Not even paying attention in the huddle.
