Mine was the BDSC in 1990, my freshman year in the student section, vs current BIG foe MSU. Not only was it my first Nebraska BB game it was my first College BB game ever.
Before I went to school at Nebraska I didn't ever consider any other sports there other than Football. I was a huge NBA fan because I grew up in San Antonio and this was just the beginning of the David Robinson era.  I used to go to NBA games all the time and saw George Gervin play often. Still one of my favorite players of all time. This was a great time to be a Spurs fan.
Anyway, seeing the Huskers play up and close got me hooked instantly. Of course I was lucky, however I never thought this would be the high water mark for seasons. A few notes about that season I remember the most:
    1. Losing to Murray State. Murray who? Oh yeah the Murray State team that had Popeye Jones and made the NCAA's.
    2. Not being impressed by the Big 10 after we beat Illinois (neutral), MSU (home), and Wisconsin (away).
    3. The student section!

Man, was so hoping I'd see Bob Grattopp in this thread. My grandfather was his high school coach in Geneva. Heard so many wonderful stories about him. Always remember going to the Sports Center growing up and finding his lifesize picture on the wall with other all-conference players.

I also can't remember what my first game was but had to be in the mid-1980s as I was a huge Brian Carr fan. Some games I'll never forget.

    1. Danny Manning dribbling off his foot in 1988. I think the Jayhawks ended up okay that year. And Sports Reference says we finished 2-10 after that game.

    2. Being there for "the shot" against Michigan State. Was a freshman in high school. My all-time favorite team until this year.

"Talk about Nebraska being the Big Eight Conference basketball patsy ceased on Wednesday night, when the Cornhuskers -- courtesy of Beau Reid's three-point shot in the waning seconds -- outslugged Big Ten Conference bully and fifth-ranked Michigan State 71-69.

"'We believed we could win and went out to do the things that it took to win," said the senior guard, Reid. "It wasn't a fluke. We played them tough from wire to wire."

I've already told my story on my first Husker game in the Coliseum.  I don't want to be " that guy" who keeps telling the same story over and over.  But, I will say, I really like this team!

My early memories following the Huskers:  this had to be the 70-71, season.  I watched the Huskers play on TV on a few Saturday afternoons, during the Big 8 season.  Never on every Saturday but at least 3-4 conference games a season.   Marvin Stewart was a senior, Chuck Jura a sophomore.  Usually won in Lincoln. I remember Marvin Stewart being so good!

Probably my favorite memory from that same time period, was Wednesday night games.  I grew up in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and my dad was the organist for our church for 40 years.  Of course, Lenten services could not be missed.  They started at 7 pm, same time as Husker tip-offs.  Remember, I'm 10- 14 years old, so I talk my mom into giving me the car keys so I can warm up the car the second the service is over.  Usually caught the last 15 minutes of the second half.  🙂

Don’t really remember the first game. Was maybe 4-5 years old in 1964/1965.

Do remember standing in line at the Coliseum to get tickets, the bright court and dark stands. An opposing coach said it was like playing in a bowling alley. The popcorn machine in the one corner.  The concession where under the bleachers and they put plastic wrap with a rubber band over your drink cup so noting fell into your drink.

Then having the Bob open and it was WOW. We got something here. Sitting on the plank seats and getting my first season tickets in 1988. Enjoying the 90’s taking my sons.

Then they opened the Taj Mahal with the Vault.  Now having 6 season tickets. And still taking middle son to every game.

Have gone to at least 1 home game a year since 1964. Only have missed maybe 5-8 home games since 1988.

it is just what I do and my sons do. 🩷

Wonderful memories, guys. That's what makes sports important. Not being a native Nebraskan, I'll have to use the first game I saw at Allen Fieldhouse as my contribution. I went with my Dad to the NCAA regional, March 14,1959 when Oscar Robertson's Cincinnati Bearcats played Bob Boozer's Kansas State Wildcats. (K-State won in overtime after Oscar missed a free throw that would have won the game).

    Sounds about right.
I would like to add that there is NIL and then there is extra's that the athlete can do on their own without fear of the NCAA comming down on them, such as brand endorsements, advertisements, etc. plus plus plus social media. This is a big one as it allows athletes to profit directly off of the money they earn from their social media.
There is a D2 wrestler that I follow,  maybe I've mentioned him before, Cayden Henschel who has big Youtube channel where he does a  lot of brand sponsorships. Angel Reese has a monster size Instagram presence. One of the best parts of NIL is now these athletes get to earn money off of their name.

    Edited to Add More Context:
There are going to be players who aren't as focused on getting a huge NIL deal but rather they are thinking about their future and know that they can get a ton of exposure in a State like Nebraska at the flagship University. That exposure could be to increase social media presence, get into businesses. The sky is literally the limit.
I'm actually working on this right now with my son as he's a sophomore in HS and he wrestles. He did play on the freshman baseball team at HS as well, but has since quit so he can focus solely on wrestling. He wants to go to college. He's not a D1/D2 level, however we believe he can go to D3/NAIA, where scholarships and NIL are minimal to non-existent at best. Because of his unique circumstances, of which I don't want elaborate on yet,  he has the potential to capitalize on that. He can document his struggles, successes, college choices, etc.

I think I get what you are thinking, but not sure I agree with the logic.  The first step for ANY recruit coming to UNL is getting the nod of approval from the the coaching staff, including HCFH.  Although Fred made mistakes in his first 3 years (mostly trusting he who shall not be named), most would agree he has learned his lesson and now knows exactly what type of players he wants (which I am assuming does NOT include primadonnas).  Thus, if HCFH is recruiting the player, I feel confident that recruit meets HCFH's criteria for what he wants on the team (which includes being a team player).  If this is the case, the next crucial step is securing the commitment from the athlete.  If NIL is a factor, then we should generally be able to make sure NU is in line with whatever other schools may be in the picture to make sure it is not the deciding factor.  And please don't say "well, if money is all that matters we don't want him anyway."  Who on this board, if they were interviewing for a job, would not at least give some weight to the salary/compensation offered by the different prospective employers.

Plus, there are ways to pay significant NIL without it leading to the "recruits running the program."  For instance, it is my understanding that Creighton pays all of its starters the same amount (which his a pretty significant sum) and pays the non-starters the same amount.  This makes sense, because this would prevent any one player from being resentful of what another player is making.  There are other options along these lines that could be implemented.

Last, I want someone who really knows to answer this question.  Is NU Hoops "total" NIL package this year as larger or larger than Creighton's total NIL package?  Anyone?  If the answer is no, then that is unacceptable.

Nailed it. I don't want anymore one and done or ego players. I want us to build something that is sustainable with good kids that are also solid players who get what HCFH is doing and are willing to sacrifice their individual accolades in order to win. I want us to be able to survive losing an assistant coach because the next assistant coach who comes in will be able to be a part of the culture. I also want to build so that way we can survive losing HCFH if he where to step down do to health concerns. This is a real concern of mine.

I believe that we are going to be a program on the rise as kids will get to play in a system that is fun where everyone contributes and scores, and that we go deep into our bench. Right now we have 8 guys who have played a total of 550+ minutes this season. We have only 2 players who average more than 25 min/game. I believe we will be a magnet for athletic big men who can shoot and don't just want to play with their back to the basket for an entire game.

To be clear that doesn't mean I'd turn down the opportunity for 4/5 star players under the right set of circumstances. I just don't want to lose our soul to get them. I also know that we need to bring in talent next year to keep this going as we will no longer be the hunter but the hunted.

I am kind of starting to wonder if you DON'T want to do this to build a good, quality, consistent program. Starting throwing money and guys and they are start running the program. But get good, solid players in here that appreciate and get what Fred is doing and wants to build and you have something.
