I think this is accurate for today but I'm not as dismissive as you are on his future prospects.  He needs to add some weight and develop defensively and he also needs to develop his handles.  Going into this season, I thought he was more of a three point specialist along with a defensive liability.  I never imagined him developing into our best and most creative finisher at the rim.  Whose to say he can't surprise us all again next season and further develop his weaknesses.  He's listed at 6'2, that might be generous, but he's not prohibitively small.  I believe the American version of Keisei Tominaga is also listed at 6'2 as well.  Just saying.

@Norm Peterson can do the geometric analysis here as I can't see if anyone is standing on their tip toes or if their knees are bent, but it looks to me like the American version is taller by a couple inches.

That is wrong too.  It's actually 5-5, here are the first ten games after Walker returned:

      Jan 3 42 Michigan St. L, 74-56   Away B10   30 81 38 15 7-13 0-0 1-8 2 7 3 3 1 1 1

      Dec 29 32 Iowa W, 66-50   Home B10   21 77 30 10 5-9 0-0 0-0 2 6 0 4 1 1 4
      Dec 20 213 Queens W, 75-65   Home   MVP 28 145 20 13 6-8 0-0 1-2 1 5 6 1 2 2 2
      Dec 17 20 Kansas St. L, 71-56   Semi-Away     27 66 25 7 1-5 0-0 5-6 1 5 3 5 2 0 4
      Dec 10 5 Purdue L, 65-62 OT Home B10   33 109 25 14 7-13 0-0 0-0 6 4 1 2 1 0 4
      Dec 7 21 Indiana L, 81-65   Away B10   32 90 25 11 5-7 0-0 1-4 1 4 5 5 0 2 1
      Dec 4 9 Creighton W, 63-53   Away     23 116 41 22 11-16 0-0 0-0 4 4 2 3 0 0 3

      Nov 30 162 Boston College W, 88-67   Home     18 168 14 10 5-6 0-0 0-0 1 4 0 0 0 0 3
      Nov 27 186 Florida St. W, 75-58   Neutral   MVP 32 164 20 20 10-12 0-0 0-0 6 7 4 1 0 0 1
      Nov 25 37 Memphis L, 73-61   Neutral     35 78 33 15 7-10 0-1 1-2 6 6 3 9 1 1 2

Iowa and Creighton were decent wins, but the other three were pretty non impressive.

No it's not. The stat was about the starting 5 of Griesel, Walker, Gary, Manny and CJ, I believe, but really it's about the first four. Griesel didn't play vs. Indiana but did vs. Minnesota. Then Gary got hurt the next game vs. Illinois, so 6-4 is the stat.

I could care less if Wilcher plays another minute.

We need a lot of help in the transfer portal. Keisei can't be relied on night in and night out and doesn't always fit the defensive first philosophy. Lawrence has impressed for as young as he is, but we do have a bunch of role players for the most part.

A lot of what's not being spoken about is how does 1890 Initiative fit into the discussion. Last year we had no shot at Scheyerman mostly due to that aspect. Do businesspersons in Nebraska want to support hoops to a level necessary? Do they see it making sense? That will have a lot to say with any success we have in the portal.

Keisei's has been in double figures six of his last seven games and 20+ in 3 of his last 5.

CJ, I get it, but he was really good last year and I expect him to bounce back next year. He's fighting it this year for sure, though.

    CJ, Wilhelm ↘️

Trending down. Both have lost minutes rather than gained since the injuries to two starters. Roles have been reduced.

    Adds:

    Ramel, Rice

I like both of these guys but we need a PG to replace Sam G., and probably another big, and then the best available scorer if we have an extra spot, which we almost always do.

I think CJ will be a big time bounce back candidate. He was so good down the stretch last year that I have a hard time believing he just lost it. Wilhelm will be interesting, too. There's a raw skill set there that I think can be rally good with some continued molding.

PG is interesting. It's a huge need. Do they think they have the answer in house with Ramel and Quaran? How do they want to focus their recruiting priorities? Do they go after a portal PG? A senior? A player with more than a year of eligibility? OR do they try to go after a couple of big time difference makers like Keyonte Johnson? It will be interesting to see how it all goes this summer.

Yes. But until this year Hoiberg hasn't shown an ability to be able to handle that nature one bit. And this year he's just barely above scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of success.

But this year is the most recent result. If he'd had this year in year one or two then gone backwards, I think I'd feel differently. But instead, he put together a decent team, though it lacked some depth. To me, it feels like the start of something. I'm curious if Trev feels that way, too.

One thing I wonder.  This is only the 2nd year with a new AD.  Should we somewhat discount the first two years?  What does the plan look like going forward?  Is this year building a winning culture/formula?  If this were year 2 how are we feeling?  If the AD and head coach have a new plan do we give that more time?

I think that's the debate. And really, the only ones that know that at this point are Trev and Fred. We'll all find out soon enough, at least for next year.

I keep seeing this comment that Hoiberg figured it out. That seems to be a stretch. It looks to me the AD figured it out and clued him in.

Perhaps, but Fred's also a smart guy and I believe Trev said Fred presented him a plan about how he wanted to adjust. I'll take him at his work on that. But even if Trev did mandate the changes Fred was the one who had to execute it. I'd argue he did until the injuries hit. If he gets another year, he'll have to build on what happned this year. And probably not what the final record will be but what the program looked like in the middle third of the season.

  8. What's so great about college sports, or even just sports in general, is that sometimes the irreplaceable players do get replaced. Walker probably doesn't get replaced in exactly the same way as he produces but steps forward from Kieta and Wilhelm could get us close to Walker's production. Both were highly rated players, so the talent should be there for it to happen. I'm not ruling out help in the portal either.

maybe because it was clear Griesel and Bandoumel were going to get 80-90% of the backcourt minutes? Next year, if he's that good, he will get 80% of the minutes.

I get it, I'm just saying it doesn't happen very often that a player of his caliber comes in and voluntarily sits.

At one point shortly before the injuries, that lineup was among the top 20 best five man lineups in the country per kenpom if memory serves.

I hadn't seen that, but if that's true, that's pretty crazy. Gives me hope he can do it again this offseason. It's going to be a key development offseason, too, for guys like Dawson, Jamarques, Wilhelm and Blaise. Will need CJ to get back to the form he showed last year and, frankly, I'd like Keisei to stick around during the summer. It'll be a pretty important one for the program.

Everyone's talking about this style that Fred has created...

    1. He hired in the defensive scheme. Which, I mean, credit to him I guess for making the change and farming it out. But...

    2. The two players who make what we're doing offensively work are highly specific, special players, and gone next year.

He's definitely going to get another year. I just do not see Alberts chopping down with the axe this year. But is he going to get an extension? Or is he just a dead man walking next year?

I don't think it has to be one or the other. You don't need to extend him, he's still got four more years on his contract after this season. This can absolutely be a year-by-year deal. There will be players with similar skill sets as to what he brought in last year out there this spring. What maybe you won't be as likely to find is the connection to the program Griesel has. Perhaps he sees some similar skill sets in guys like Lloyd or Dawson that he won't have to go out and recruit but can instead look for a different skillset that can elevate us offensively. It will be a fascinating offseason if he's retained.

The feeling of year 1 that people get is in part to this being the first year there is any sort of positive culture built and the first season that Fred has a standard coaching staff.

It seems like this could have been a bubble team with Keyonte Johnson not simply because he's a great player but because there is a core here where it would work. To me it seems like getting that type of player out of the transfer portal seems possible.

I think this is right, too. This is what it *should* have looked like in 2019. The last three years have felt like a group of mercenaries. This is the first time where it feels like we know some players on the team, we like them and want to see them succeed. That hasn't really been the case the past three years.

    2. If you can look past the injuries, it does appear there is some momentum building. It's probably worth seeing what he can do with another trip to the portal.

    3. Swapping name plates on the basketball head coach's office is a strategy that hasn't panned out so maybe ride this horse a little bit and see what happens.

These feel like the most likely argument people will make. He doesn't have someone like McGowens on the hook that would compel you to keep him for that reason, but I think there are real pieces that can play in the Big Ten on the roster and coming in that can compete and would love to see them develop as a group. That won't happen if Fred leaves, at least not with this group and that process just gets delayed by at least a year.

Also, Fred completely shifting course with some success shows me he can still coach. I think there's a conversation to be had that says let's see if he can develop these guys and take another step next year.

  14. If I'd never watched Nebraska basketball before this year and you told me this was the first year of the Fred Hoiberg Era, I'd be really encouraged. It has everything I'd hope a year 1 team would have. A few experienced veterans transfer in to set a good cultural foundation, with a few quality role players and young guys, perhaps one or two of them redshirt, to build up towards a year two or three breakthrough. There would be a few bright spots that give the fans hope that the concept will work but it's not put together enough to win at a really high level.

That's what this year feels like to me. It's what year one should have been. But we can't just wipe away the disaster the first three years were. Part of me wonders if Trev essentially wipe the slate clean, assuming things didn't completely fall off the rails, and treated this year as year 1 between the two of them. The way Trev talks about the team, the way Fred built the team, it all seems to me like there's some sort of agreement like that. That doesn't mean he'd get as long of a leash as if this was his true year one, but it kind of feels like there's been enough there to give Fred another year 2. And, if you squint hard and turn your head just right, turn it upside down, a 5 kind of looks like a 2...

I've heard conflicting info about the state of Trev and Fred's relationship, so perhaps in a few weeks we'll find out his is all hog-wash, it's just the sense I've been getting as the year's gone on.
