Coaches kid reacted to Norm Peterson in What will our rotation look like next year?
@aphilso1 One point I'd make about Keon and Depaul is that he joined them mid-year. He was originally a 2021 recruit, just like Bryce. According to ESPN's rating, he'd have been a top 50 kid in the nation in the 2021 class. That's this year's freshmen.
When he joined Depaul, they'd already gone through summer workouts. Fall conditioning. Pre-season practices. And several games. He's joining an established rotation, going in there cold as a high school senior.
I wouldn't judge him at all by what he did at Depaul.

I understand that everyone would rather do it with 'Home-Grown' kids. But Fred Hoiberg is not letting the fact they're opting to go out-of-state faze him in the least. He has assembled what is probably one of the most talented teams most of us have ever seen and is recruiting more top talent than ever before.

Nothing left today to improve on my seats in section 221. Still glad to have my current seats and looking forward to this year more than any since I've been a season ticket holder.

Coaches kid reacted to HuskerFever in Dalano Banton Picked in the 2nd Round of the 2021 NBA Draft
Just want to reemphasize. This is a big deal.
Only two Nebraska guys drafted in the NBA in the 2000s. Both within the last two years.
And what's great is that we're probably going to see a couple more come out of our current roster. A pipeline to the NBA is a major selling point in recruiting. Let's continue to pump that pipeline!

Considering the alternative was for Nebraska to have an empty spot left from Banton deciding to keep his name in the NBA Draft… I don’t understand how anyone could think this is anything other than a great thing for the Huskers to get a player or this caliber with legitimate success at a Power6 conference school and that was getting looks from NBA teams before deciding to come back to play another season in college. He’s a grad transfer, so he has one season of eligibility, so he literally fills Banton’s empty spot for ‘21-‘22, and will leave that spot open again for the 2022 recruiting class. It’s a win-win.

Coaches kid reacted to Norm Peterson in Banton's a Raptor
I'm feeling like we do.
I'm feeling like we're going to see, for example, a better version of Lat Mayen this year, but a Lat Mayen who gets to be the 3rd or 4th perimeter shooting option rather than who has to be the 1st or 2nd. I feel like we'll see a more efficient Lat from deep this year.
I think we'll have proficient perimeter shooters with CJ, Lat, Kobe and Bryce, and Keisei if he sees the floor. We'll also have competent shooters with Trey and Keon, and Trevor if he sees the floor. So, 6-8 guys who should be legit threats to knock it down from deep.
And that would allow Dalano to operate where he operates best.
Which means I'm feeling like we'd see a better version of Dalano Banton this year, if he chooses to return. Which I hope he does.

He has the tools to be good next year. And, depending on how he uses his time over the summer, he could come back and prove it.

Everything that Banton is doing well in these “workouts” is exactly his problem. It doesn’t translate when dudes get into him and people figure out to guard him with an athletic guard.

Coaches kid reacted to millerhusker in It's Sunday, March 6, 2022 ...
I'm hopeful for Banton to make a jump also. The first half of the season, we were much better with him on the floor. I wanted Hoiberg to play him nearly all 40 minutes. The second half of the season, we were better when he was on the bench. But, if the coaches didn't think he would be valuable for us next year, I'm sure he would've been asked to move on.
The funny thing is, no matter what combination of players I choose to put in the lineup in a situation like this, I think, "Well maybe I'm sleeping on *insert one of literally 5 different players* ." I suppose that's a good problem to have.

Coaches kid reacted to Nebrasketballer in 2021-2022 expectations
I’m not sure if any of this is in response to me, but I’ll give a few responses in case it is.
I like both Banton and Lat and think both will be very important pieces of this teams success next season. I think Lat will start at the 4 spot and I think Banton will come off of the bench.
“If you want to knock [Banton] out of the starting lineup and give his minutes to someone else, you mind explaining who will grab the boards for us?“
Wasn’t Banton already knocked out of the starting lineup at the end of last season? And the offense looked much better when he wasn’t running the PG and when he was coming off of the bench. If Banton was knocked out of the starting lineup last season with the talent level that was on this team, I don’t think that it’s out of line to think that after adding all of the talent Nebraska is adding to the roster this offseason that Banton will continue to come off of the bench.
And I think Banton is very valuable coming off of the bench as the 6th man, because he can effectively come in and play 1, 2, 3, or 4 depending on the flow of each game, but I expect that he will come off of the bench to play the 3 spot most of the time.
To me, Wilcher looks to clearly be a better shooter than Banton and I think he fits the starting 3 spot much better in Hoiberg’s offense.
I’ve said multiple times that I think the starting lineup that makes most sense to me for Hoiberg’s system is Trey, Bryce, Wilcher, Lat, and Walker. I think that has a great mix of shooting, length, ball handling, and ability to get to the rim on offense, as well as the length and athleticism across the board to basically switch all screens on defense.
I’m not suggesting that I think Edwards will start in place of Lat at the 4 spot (although I don’t think it’s impossible), but rather I was just saying that I thought it would be a fun option to switch it up with a small-ball option to have a lineup of Trey, Bryce, Wilcher, Edwards, and Walker and that I think I would also be interested to see what Banton could do at the 5 spot in that small-ball lineup in place of Walker.
I think Lat looked pretty good shooting the ball once Walker came into the lineup for the end of the season. One of the biggest issues for him is poor defense at times that gets him into bad position so he gets into quick foul trouble which takes him off of the floor for extended periods of time, which seems to take him out of rhythm. The good thing about the lineup next season is that this team should have enough other shooters/scorers that they can carry that load when he’s on the bench with foul trouble.

Coaches kid got a reaction from mwm89 in Who's our point guard next year?
I am actually disappointed I didn't get an offer. I am only 5'9", but I make up for it by being slow and having poor court vision.

Coaches kid reacted to Norm Peterson in Would you play for Coach Hoiberg's Huskers?
Hoiberg kept, what, 1 of Miles' players? And he had to scramble to fill a roster with whoever was available in April 2 years ago? And, so, maybe some of those guys didn't work out? And we just got done with year 2? And kids transfer at a higher rate now than they did 10 years ago and so it's almost commonplace that players will transfer? But we're supposed to feel like it's some sort of bad sign when the guys you really wouldn't want to keep off this year's roster announce, in the most gracious ways I think I've ever seen from any departing player, that they're going to continue their careers elsewhere? And this is supposed to be some sort of damning indictment of Hoiberg as a coach? Such that you wouldn't want to play for him? As if transfers aren't a common occurrence across the landscape of college basketball?
Which of the guys who transferred do you think we should have kept?
You think 2 years is a reasonable sample size to say, based on number of transfers, you wouldn't want to play for him?
Really?

Announcing his commitment via Instagram
CJ Wilcher is a class of 2019 shooting guard out of Newark, NJ. Clocking in at 6'5", the sophomore to be was rated in the top 150 coming out of high school and regarded as an elite shooter. Wilcher saw limited playing time this season until senior SG Nate Johnson went down with an injury. It's probable that Johnson's decision to come back for another year led to Wilcher looking elsewhere for playing time. Matt Abdelmassih had originally offered Wilcher at both St John's and Nebraska.
At this moment Wilcher would have to redshirt unless granted a waiver. However, he might be immediately eligible if the NCAA puts a one-time transfer exception rule into place. Wilcher will have 4 years of eligibility left.

Coaches kid got a reaction from Silverbacked1 in Who's our point guard next year?
Yes - the game has changed drastically since I was in college. I think I'd characterize a point guard, generally, as somebody who: 1) can be the go to guy to handle the ball against pressure; 2) take command of the offense and get you into your sets; 3) has the poise and floor savvy/basketball IQ to be a leader on the floor, and 4) can distribute the ball within the context of the offense. But as you suggest, in today's game, a 6'8" guy with the right skill set could fill that role.

Nice! I guess Fred answered your questions sufficiently to decide that you WOULD, in fact, play for Fred Hoiberg's Huskers 🙂
