Hard to believe the roster has been cut in half (including seniors) in less than a week.

    Current Roster (scholarship players)

    Gary

    Mast

    Williams

    Lawrence

    Diop

    Uhlis

    Janowski

    Frager

     Hoiberg *

^^^ this roster probably makes the tournament.

If they add a couple killers in the portal watch tf out.  I think we need a pitbull at SF and F.  Janowski will probably give Brice good resting minutes day 1.  Frager is handpicked for the 3 but he probably needs to be an understudy.

    As it stands though:

    Uhlis

    Lawrence

    Williams

    Gary

    Mast

^^^ that’s a salty bunch who can guard the perimeter with great speed at 1-4.  A little small though.

We really need a Bando SG/SF type who is an elite perimeter defender so Brice can guard the 3 on defense while punishing everyone at the 2 on offense.  I’m not sure on Janowski’s defense but if he can guard the 2 he might start because of his offensive skills.  JL is a really nice luxury off the bench with his energy.

Hot take as I would be shocked( or things are going very poorly) if frager is a back end of the rotation guy as a freshman.

I also thought from the minutes he got in close games that rice would be a dude for us in coming years though

^^^ full game of Frager against another all state kid.  Plenty to criticize but he also drops a casual 40 or whatever as a legitimate 3 level scorer, and a junior.  The elevation on his jumper from every level is seriously elite, and that translates.

I don’t think Rice was going to be good enough defensively to get on the court much next season.  I think Frager will be eventually but not year one.  Also remember he’s the new Yvan in terms of age so he’s very much an investment.

All that said, I liked Rice’s upside too… I don’t think his challenges were physical.

  3. Frager > Rice

    Janowski > Lloyd

I think that’s what it comes down to.  The writing was on the wall. The two newbies are likely to be an upgrade in team defense.  Frager is at least close to Rice offensively and Janowski is a great young all around player.  I don’t know how meaningful their contributions will be next season but they improve our roster with this trade immediately.

And I liked both Rice and Lloyd as talents, but I like the newbs better.

Who stays?  Gotta ask that question.

My hope for a rotation as of now:
    Ulis - Hoiberg

    Janowski - JL

    Williams - Wilcher

    Gary - Rice

    Mast - Matar

^^^ pretty salty group.  I’m all in on Janowski contributing immediately.  I think Rice will take a big step.

That said, we probably need to open up the NIL checkbook for a gritty defensive minded transfer guard who can shoot at a reasonable clip.  Right now we either have offensive guys or defensive guys.  We need some all around guards.

If A&M hits threes in the 2nd half, they will be tough to stop. But we can’t let them get to the rim. And can we please make some bunnies! Cut it to 8 at the under 16 and go from there. GBR!

Yep.  They literally cannot shoot better from outside but 3ft shots and layups are demoralizing.  They’ve made exactly zero post entry passes against our defense.   We need heavy help at the top of the key and, despite the current numbers, keep making them shoot outside.  I expect an ice cold second half from A&M unless they get to the rim.

  6. I'm pretty ambivalent in confidence on this one.

Common opponents were @OSU and PSU at home.

A&M eeked out a win on the road against OSU on the road and handled PSU at home.

Nebraska got handled on the road against OSU and dominated PSU at home.

I do think their PG is the best PG we've seen this season.  He's special.  The rest of the team is scrappy and plays extremely hard.  I like their team.  Wildly different philosophies and body types.  It will really come down to our defense because I think we can score on them with decent execution.  I have no qualms with calling the game a tossup though.
