Couldn't watch last night, traveling but was able to listen to the second half......

Kent and Jake are a lot of fun.
Jake was in midseason form, angry at the officials and their inconsistency. Jake brought B1G Conference intensity.
Kent was a true grizzled vet rounding into form, easing into the season. Once called "got it" on a CJ airball.
Line of the night was Jake complaining that Rienk's mask could not get knocked off his face by itself and that he had to be fouled. Kent responded that his CPAP mask seems to work its way off his face without much contact 😂

This is the first team to hold their first 3 opponents under 55 points since the Mighty Mites of 2008-09

This team still has a similar issue to last year where they need a player that can beat their man 1 on 1. Poor shooting probably made it look worse than it actually is, but they look like they still need another playmaker.

Offense struggled all night.  No rhythm/continuity.
Defense played well.  No issues jump out.
We handled pressure okay, but it may have created issues getting into the flow of the offense.
    Rebounded pretty well.
    Hustled pretty well.
    Good free throw shooting.
Good to have Keisei back, but no way he was 100%.  Finally got it going late.
Half of those who played struggled.  The good news is the other half sort of picked them up.
Rider was a decent team.  We played through the offensive struggles for a win.

Good or great passing teams can certainly beat it with quick passes around the horn, especially resulting in tough to get to the corner.  Illinois game at home last year comes to mind.  They really had the ball popping and your rotations just cannot get there when that happens.   All in all though, I love the scheme.  We don't give up very many easy paint points, which I am very fond of, especially since the time they moved the 3 point line back a good bit.

Gary out again. That's 4 games (including the exhibition and secret exhibition) and if the start of Derrick Walker's season is any indication then it seems like regular season game 5 vs Oregon St. might be the first time we see Gary.

While I agree with what you are saying, I think the benefit of always doing it is that everyone is on the same page.  If we try to choose when to or not, they won't always be.  So that is some of the trade off I suppose.

Notes from Fred's Thursday press conference:

Gary will not play Monday - no timetable on when he will be allowed to return Everyone battling injuries is day to day Mast practiced a little bit yesterday, non-contact drill, responded well, today is off day Allick the same Lloyd the same Tominaga out of the boot and walking well – was sore the next day after Doane, but responded well – will have him move around tomorrow Keita – no running or jumping, in the next week or so we’ll test the ankle 4 guys sick with strep throat – most are doing well, expect 3 of them to practice tomorrow Hope we get all of these injuries out of the way early Next man up mentality Rice & Jacobson got chances to take advantage of their minutes v Doane, Sam played great in first chance to start Hopefully we’ll continue to get guys back on the floor by Monday
Sam – I saw nerves last year when he first realized he was going to be needed, but he then responded and continued to gain confidence, shot 40+% from 3-pt, great defensive plays – always know what he’s going to give us – he impacts winning with the way he plays defense – has worked hard in offseason on offensive end, hunting shots and finishing

Lindenwood shoots it very well – added some athletic players – we have film from one of their scrimmages – they play hard, good size – good test for us – as we get healthy we need to make sure we do a great job on the glass vs them – must limit catch and shoot 3s – we’ll play with great effort & preparation

We just have to trust the medical staff regarding when it’s the right time to bring guys back to avoid lingering injuries into the season – our medical staff is on top of it – but sometimes you have to push the guys through some things to see where they’re at health wise – just have to trust the process and ramp things up at the right time

Still had a competitive hard practice yesterday without having a lot of bodies available – we’ll practice hard tomorrow and then back off slowly going into Monday

Tominaga is still sore with a bit of swelling, but was walking without a limp – we will protect him & be smart with him – he actually does have a history with some ankle sprains I found out later, so that may help him recover faster and know what he can do

Really want to get off to a fast start in the season and show our toughness – set the tone – even when the ball doesn’t go in the hoop, playing hard and tough can generate offense with deflections – we’ll show great fight every time we play and the fans will appreciate it

We’ve been practicing so long already – going since June with the foreign trip – far different than how long you could practice in the past in the preseason – our guys are sick of going vs each other – games vs Utah & Doane are very helpful for finding things to work on – I think we’ll continue to grow as more guys return to health

Trying to find combinations might be easier this year because of everything we dealt with last year with injuries and vastly different combos last year – guys had to be ready to go and realize that their roles may change from the start of the season to the end

We are really focusing on culture & chemistry – they saw how it worked last year and they want to build on it – that will help us play hard for all 40 minutes and have a consistent year and hopefully make the postseason – need to sustain the better parts of last season for the entire year

Can’t say enough how much I enjoy going to work with this group every day – the care for each other genuinely – so important in building chemistry when games are under stressful times

Excited about 19 home games – excited about the experience of this team, because it’s easier to get through tough times – appreciate their approach

Right now we’re not planning on redshirting anyone but we’ll see

There’s no common denominator to these injuries, Mast was an attack off the floor, Allick just landed awkwardly contesting a shot, Lloyd got hurt diving on the floor for a ball, Keisei just twisted an ankle – they’ve all been a little different

I do love our defensive scheme.  It is awesome to watch.  BUT, any scheme (offensively or defensively) is only as good as its weakest link.
We will soon learn if we have any of those links.

It's good to have Husker hoops back!! My overreactions and meaningless opinion:
-Missing 5 key players (including Keisei) I thought we actually looked pretty good.
-First I think the continuity in the coaching staff is important. The defensive scheme looked similar to last year and the returners really fly around on defense and play confidently. Offensively things looked similar at times as well. I thought our interior passing and cutting looked better than the past which may be something we see more of.
-Sam and Jamarques are fun to watch on defense. They are active and get their hands on balls. Sam totally disrupts the other teams offense with his hustle. My biggest overreaction is that Sam's energy and effort on defense is similar to what Keisei gives us on offense. (nothing like beating an NAIA team)
-I liked a couple actions we ran for Jamarques when he was off the ball. I think two of his open looks were on sets similar to the shots he got last year.
-Williams moves well without the ball and I think will be a great fit.
Coleman has some Griesel in his game. He backed down shorter defenders and most of his scoring came off a mismatch. He doesn't move the ball as well as the rest of the group but if he can give us a couple back down baskets a game v smaller guards that would be nice.
-Eli is a scorer. His corner 3's looked silky smooth. Like any freshman his shot selection and defense needs work. I thought there were 3-4 plays where he could have gotten an easy steal if he was engaged. If he can guard he will play.
-I definitely don't questions this staff's ability in player development. Guys get better under this group and the staff does a good job putting them in positions to be successful. I worry about our ability to get into the lane off the dribble. I don't see a lot of guys able to break people down off the dribble on the roster, cutting and spacing will be key.
