I do not understand how Lat received the flagrant and the elbow to Thor did not.  Overall I will not criticize the refs, but those two calls were abhorrent.

I think it was mentioned in the game thread. By my count he's fired off 1 imaginary arrow for every 5 star he's landed us. Any more in the quiver?

I'm kinda surprised no comments were made about Trey pulling an imaginary arrow out of an imaginary quiver and shooting it in the air with an imaginary bow.

I thought we frowned upon such actions at Nebraska.

Raise your hand if you've seen two individual 41 point games in the past week where the player who scored 41 points was on the losing team.

*You all should be raising your hand.*

I'll just go ahead and say it.  I won't be upset to see ANY of the players return next year if they want to.  We add some key pieces, but the players who could return as a super senior are great pieces who know their roles and stepped up big when we needed it tonight.

No we have plenty of guys who arent very good like him and that's why we have 1 conference win.

Exactly.  He's a high BBIQ guy that the coaches like, he has stuck with the program through highs and lows and a coaching change, so you know he is a loyal Husker, AND he doesn't count against our scholarship limit?

I would argue that not only do we *want* Thor to return for an extra year...we almost *need* him to.  Same goes for Kobe really.
  9. Thanks

Just for clarification Thor and/or Kobe can come back next year and it doesn't count towards our scholarship limit.  This is an exception only for the school on which a guy is currently on the roster.  If Luka Garza transferred here, we would need a schollie.

I will never understand this type of thinking.  There are few people anywhere as invested in the fortunes of the Husker hoops program as Thor.  We need more guys on the team like him, not less, IMO.

Teddy Allen is scoring 0.967 points per possession, which Synergy classifies as "very good" and in the 73rd percentile. He's "very good" both in the halfcourt and in transition.

He's in the 72nd percentile or better in each of his top four play types (spot up = 1.033 PPP, 72%; transition = 1.173 PPP, 74%; off screen = 1.128, 76%; P&R ball-handler = 0.921, 82%). He's also in the 64th percentile in isolation after that Penn State game, scoring 0.867 PPP ("good"). Teddy is above average at almost everything he does offensively. The man-to-man defense and turnover issues are a problem, but there are a lot of talented players that struggle in those areas yet still succeed. If you can't find a way to win with that, that's probably more of a you problem than a Teddy one. He's the least of Nebraska's problems, especially with the way he's been playing the last several games.

I think people get too caught up on the 1, 2 or 3 plays a game that look really bad. He's still a net positive even with a bad shot here and there, and honestly, some of those "bad shots" have a better chance of going in than a lot of the other things Nebraska has been doing on offense. Between shot attempts, free-throw attempts, assists and turnovers, Teddy's using up roughly 20 possessions per game. Nebraska is averaging 74.4 possessions per game. Other guys have plenty of opportunities to stay involved.

This is some company for Teddy

    UNL Postgame Notes
*-Teddy Allen finished with a career-high 41 points, the second-highest single-game total in school history and just the fifth 40-point game ever at Nebraska. His 41 points ties the school record for most points in a home game (41 by Aleks Maric) and breaks the PBA record (35 by three players). The top five single-game totals are below.
    No.     Name, Opponent Date                                         Points
    1.        Eric Piatkowski vs. Oklahoma (3/11/94)               42
    2.        Aleks Maric Kansas State (2/13/07)                      41
Teddy Allen, Penn State (2/23/21)                        41
    3.        Rich King Northern Illinois (2/18/91)                    40
               Jerry Fort Missouri (2/22/75)                                40

*-Allen finished with 41 points, eight rebounds and six assists, setting career highs in points (41), field goals (16), 3-pointers (six) and assists (six). He is just the fourth power conference player in the last decade to have at least 40 points, eight rebounds and six assists in a game per CBB Reference.

Power Conference Players Since 2011 with 40+ points, 8+ rebounds and 6+ assists in a game (per CBB Reference)
Buddy Hield, Oklahoma (at Kansas, 1/4/2016)
Ben Simmons, LSU (vs. North Florida, 12/2/2015
Trae Young, Oklahoma (vs. TCU, 1/13/2018)
Teddy Allen, Nebraska (vs. Penn State, 2/23/2021)

*-Allen also tied school marks for field goals in a game, matching the school mark by Marvin Stewart against Nevada on Dec. 14, 1970. Both players went 16-of-24 from the field.
*-Allen’s 41 points was the second 40-point game in the Big Ten this season (Luka Garza, Iowa vs. Southern, 11/27/20)
*-Allen’s 41 points and 16 field goals were the most ever allowed by Penn State to a conference opponent
*-Allen’s 28 first-half points is the most by a Husker in a half in school history. The previous record was 27 by James Palmer Jr. against Rutgers at the 2019 Big Ten Tournament
*-It marked Allen’s eighth 20-point game of the season and 11th of his career. His previous career high was 26 against Creighton on Dec. 11.

There’s no need for me to critique it. The good outweighed the bad today and I am so happy for everyone involved with the program. Fought their asses off again and came out on top. I hope they all can take a deep breath, relax and just play this thing out with the knowledge they can compete.

Teddy not starting was problematic, but I was encouraged to see how he interacted with his teammates. Especially during the timeouts. He was the first one off the bench to meet them on the floor. I'll be interested to know why Lakes got the start and not Thor or Stevenson or Webster.  They didn't look very good the first 8 minutes of the game or so, at least not offensively. Lots of out of control darts thrown at the rim in the paint. You'll be surprised to know they didn't score many points off of those attempts. Stevenson really coming into his own. This is more of what I expected to see from him this year.  Teddy's absence really hurt. Lat had a nice little second half. Thought Andre flashed some good things, too. Huskers can dig in defensively a times. Need to do it more consistently. NU had a chance in this one. They have one completely inept stretch where they can't get out of their own way. That has been the difference in these games. This game it came early. Banton seems to travel a lot. I liked that Walker tried to take on Robbins when he was in foul trouble. Didn't always work, but I liked seeing recognition. That seems to not happen as often as it should.

Nebraska Cornhuskers (0-0) vs McNeese St. Cowboys (0-0)

    Date: Wednesday Nov 25,  2020
    Time: 11:00 am
    Arena: PBA
    Broadcast:  BTN
    McNeese St Info

    Head Coach: Heath Schroyer
    Location: Lake Charles, LA
    Conference: Southland
    Nickname: Cowboys
    Mascot: Rowdy
    Last season: 15-17
    Line: Nebraska by 14.5

    Player to watch: Dru Kuxhausen
Named to the All-Southland Conference preseason first team, Scottsbluff native Kuxhausen is one of the best 3pt shooters in Div 1 as he set the school and conference record with 125 makes last year. It's easier said than done to just stick a man on Kuxhausen as the Cowboys will run his man through plenty of screens and curls to generate looks. Deadeye FT shooter.

    Player to watch: AJ Lawson
The big PG is a nice compliment to the diminutive Kuxhausen, able to guard the opposing team's SG on defense and drive into the open lanes or contact on offense.  Last year it was Lawson who took the lion's share of the shot and expect that to continue in 2020. Lawson is turnover prone so there will be opportunity for Nebraska to score some easy transition buckets.

    The Rest of the Roster
Carlos Rosario is a JUCO PF, a non-3pt threat. Keyshawn Feazell was a seldom used post player at Mississippi St who saw action vs Nebraska in the 2018 NIT game.  Florida Gulf Coast transfer Zach Scott averaged double digits thanks to volume shooting.  This also describes Louisiana Tech transfer Ra'Shawn Langston. Smaller guard Myles Hutchinson does make shots but has a lot of competition for playing time in this guard heavy roster.  Chris Orlina and Jeremy Harrell are size.  Finally in this upperclassman heavy squad we have redshirt freshman guard Collin Warren that the Cowboys have listed as a potential starter.  The springy PG won their dunk competition last year and possibly will help in the ball security and/or defensive departments.

    UNL Game Notes

    The Skinny:

2020 has been a rough year.  It's been especially rough on the McNeese St Cowboys as in addition to Covid-19, Lake Charles was hit by  two hurricanes, Laura in August and Delta in October. The city and thus McNeese St's campus was torn to shreds with the school suffering 70+ million in damages.  The basketball team spent most of the summer playing on another campus and their basketball arena will not be ready for 20-21.

Still under 50 years old, head coach and now interim athletic director Heath Schroyer has been coaching in the college ranks for almost 30 years with HC stints at Portland St, Wyoming, and Tennessee Martin.  Additionally he's been a high level recruiter for UNLV,  NC State, and BYU and has assembled a roster with more talent than your average Southland school.  Schroyer has changed his style over the years so you might see his small team trying to run in this game which should benefit Nebraska.  His defenses tend to take away the paint so we'll find out if Nebraska has indeed improved their 3pt shooting from last year.

The Huskers once again overhauled most of their roster and I don't have enough time to ask all the questions that most likely won't be answered after one game unless the answer is losing another home opener to a team we paid to be here.  Two easy things to track will be how Nebraska looks on the boards and how they execute the half court offense.  Last year Nebraska couldn't buy a rebound.  This year's team with plus length at most every position should be able to best the smaller Cowboys.  Offensively Nebraska should be able to generate a good look against a team like this with double digits on the shot clock.  Is the ball moving? Is Nebraska making the simple plays?

Circling back from my opening about all that McNeese St has gone through just to make it to Nebraska for the opening of college basketball I don't think you'll find the Cowboys will play like a team brought in here to lose.  Last season they almost beat Texas and probably give the 2019-20 Huskers all they can handle.  The Huskers will most likely need some of the composure that last year's team undeniably lacked.  This should be a manageable opening test for a Nebraska team with not a whole lot of runway before they're playing nothing but Power 5 schools.

Look for Nebraska to end up winning comfortably if the Cowboys want to run and perhaps sweat a bit if McNeese is here to muck things up.

I can honestly say for the first time in awhile that I believe that the future of a budding program is starting and I’m excited to see it finally happen. I truly believe we have the right people in place for once and the future of something special is on the horizon.

I want to enjoy this crazy season the best I can because I know it’s going to be wild as we have already seen with scheduling nightmares but can only think of what the future holds with this team. Couple this year of experience with the weapons coming in I truly believe next years squad on paper is the best we will have likely seen in a long time if ever. That may be some kool-aid but think that Fred can turn us around much like he did at Iowa State and as a fan of the game I really want Nebraska to finally be something after so many disappointing years.

So here’s to the future let’s all enjoy the ride.
