Okay, I’ve seen this recently and wondered if those are the numbers heading into the tournament, or at the end of the season? Because six straight neutral site wins against quality opponents is going to help your metrics.

I think they're at the end of the season, after the tournament, which makes it somewhat misleading.

For example, Baylor entered the 2021 tournament 3 in offense and 46 in defense, but finished 2 and 25 to meet the metric standard.

I'd bet 2011 UConn didn't have the metrics going into the tournament either since they entered the tournament with 9 losses. The Torvik time machine didn't go back that far.

  2. Wish I could find it, but one of the top bracketologists  mentioned that this year is particularly difficult because of the bunching of Big 12 teams in the 2-4 range, Big Ten teams in the 7-10 range and Big East teams on the bubble. Avoiding conference matches might result in some odd slotting.

    Awesome, Selection Sunday uproar guaranteed!

Except Section III of the bracketing principles you linked states that they “shall not place teams seeded on the first four lines at a potential 'home-crowd disadvantage' in the second round.”

I understand that not incompletely, with the exception of everything that I don't.

I don't think that teams get moved up and down due to matchups....it's more about if there is some logistical issue or if you want to avoid a conference members playing each other early on. I do not actually believe that the Iowa St athletic director nor the Butler athletic director have some sort of personal agenda involving Butler.

Couldn't agree more. It's incredibly difficult to get the teams slotted initially. Then you have to slot the protected teams. Then you have to avoid rematches and separate conference opponents. By that time, there's no wiggle room for "hey, let's screw this team, or hey, would it be a great story if ..."

That being said, I think the Alabama AD is going to screw us for the '77 win over Bear Bryant.

I also have to imagine the gaming of the system is going to decrease the effectiveness of the predictive model used by KenPom, Torvik, etc.

I don't know if that's true or not, but it's an interesting take. The metrics ratings is that they are designed to predict the outcome of games, so if beating a bad team by lot really means nothing, then KenPom etc. will change the formula.

The other big factor is our schedule.

We had a cupcake non con for the most part and avoided playing Purdue, Sparty and Illinois twice.

Plus, recent Big Ten top 25 programs are down, i.e. Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Maryland and Iowa.

I don't think it's a coincidence that Northwestern and Minnesota are also having good years.

The non-con boosted players' confidence and added to the buy-in. Success in conference pushed it even further. We're playing great right now, and I'm not sure we would have if we'd taken 4-5 losses in non-con. We'll see how far we can go in the NCAA, but I think we're close to a lock right now and would need a complete collapse to not make it.

  7. Fred looks like a million bucks at this very moment, but is the current success sustainable? That has to be proven. I don't think you can apply his Iowa State success to what he's done here, because that wasn't worth much his first three years here.

    Here are my tiers:

Coaches who have sustained high-level programs, in no particular order:

    Painter

    Underwood

McCaffery (I had to force my fingers to type that)

    Izzo

    Gard

    Pikell

    Solid job:

    Collins

    Down year, but past success:

    Willard

Big turnarounds after looking like complete flops:

    Fred

    Johnson at Minnesota

    Flops:

    Howard

    Woodson

    Too soon to tell:

    Rhoades

    Ohio State's new guy

Oh, so this is going to be a thing now.  “Arrest college students for having fun and being passionate” isn’t a hill I’d die on.  Instead, I’d try to find ways to make sure everyone on the court is safe.  That seems more productive.

    1. Under 4 timeout, officials meet with school admin to review end of game protocols.

    2. Officials meet with coaches prior to starting play after under 4 to discuss protocol.

    3. End of horn, security forms “the line” between students and rushers.

    4. If time and place allow, coach calls TO prior to final horn, subs 5 end of game players, instructs them to stand right by bench while clock expires.

This isn’t THAT hard.  That took me 5 minutes to come up with and (while it probably has holes) doesn’t take the fun or passion out of STUDENTS hands.

Wow, I've never taken that much time on one of my posts. I usually push the button at about the 18 second mark.
