I don't recall the missed dunks but I don't recall much of the game action. The atmosphere was what stood out to me and being really close to the action. Andre was certainly a dude.

If memory serves, my first game in person was during the 80-81 season. We were playing Oklahoma St. and their star player was Leroy Combs who was a sophomore. I was a sophomore in high school and I believe I was there with my brother and his wife. At the start of the game we were seated on the planks at the top of the arena behind one of the baskets. I believe just before opening tip we spotted someone we knew in the student section below us and we were able to sneak in and joined them under the hoop. Andre Smith was a senior, Jack Moore a junior and Greg Downing a soph. The atmosphere was crazy and NU came out on top. It was the largest attendance for a NU game ever, 15038 and I was there. 🙂

I didn’t want to play Illinois simply because their opponent ALWAYS gets screwed by the officials, especially late in the game. Underwood whines at, screams at and intimidates the refs more than any coach in college basketball and for some reason they don’t T him up and give his team more and more calls in their favor as the game wears on. Every game. His players behave the same way.

You pointed Kyle here and after that I've been following his play this year. SUPER athletic big who can slide between the 4 and 5. Has a defensive player of the year notch under his belt too.

You can’t expect to shoot more free throws every time when you jack up 3s at a league leading rate.

Officiating didn’t lose us this game. They let us play physical defense. We shot poorly and any time we had a chance in the first half to put some distance between us we missed key shots.  Had numerous chances to tie or take the lead in the second half and missed some good looks and they answered with some tough makes. They had a lot of transition points off of really great looks we had. You’re not gonna win when you shoot 38% on the road and the other team shoots 40% from 3. We missed a lot of shots close to the rim and they got some timely offensive rebounds. We ended up with shorter guards on Battle and he hit some tightly guarded 3s against smaller players.  We did okay on the glass. They were money from the line. Overall I thought we played decent.  Sometimes it’s a make or miss game.  It’s not always poor officiating and it is deflection from the reality of not being the better team tonight.

Of course it is - but this is reality, not fantasy. Refs have NEVER called it consistently. Quit bitching about it. Play better - minimize the reasons for the whistle to blow to the best of your ability.  That's the point.

“It’s not who you play, it’s when you play ‘em.” When talking about how tough Ohio State will be. And I agree. But this is why our season has been so impressive. K-State was 8-2 coming off of wins against Providence, Nova and LSU when we went to manhattan. Handled them on their own court. Purdue was #1 and Wisconsin was playing like a final four team when we played them. When we played indiana the first time they were projected as a tourney team. Minnesota and Penn State were arguably playing as well as anyone in the league when we played them and beat them both by nearly 20 points.

A year on the scout team playing against college level talent, with college level training and nutrition, and getting used to the system. Or a year playing 25 games against high school kids. I know which one is better for development.

Missing your senior year though, pry depends on the individual how much that means to them. It seems in this case he’s ready to move on.

Hawkins carries the ball worse than almost anyone I've seen in basketball. Makes it a tad easier to get by guys.

I call them the casual NU hoop fan. They also don’t watch a lot of college basketball period so they have unrealistic expectations. I agree they are very annoying.

My first reaction is I'm SO glad for Lawrence. He's had a very up and down season and picked a great time to figure his role out. Even though he didn't start, he played most of the second half and closed the game. Great perseverance on his part.

By this logic, Larry Bird was not a true basketball player either. Shields turned out to be a better player than most fans thought he would be. Underrated in my opinion.

I'm currently in Japan and I was told that the NU-PU game was rebroadcast here. I don't know if it was nationwide or not, but it was apparently a big deal, obviously due to KT. Glad everyone back home got to enjoy a great win. GBR!
