No. I've been highly critical of Hoiberg et al this year. But no. You absolutely have to take these things into consideration:

    1. No one was returning from Miles's last team. And the recruiting class he was bringing in was hot trash. Hoiberg had to literally round up whoever he could find to have a team.
    2. Last year wasn't just a "covid year" for us. It was a disaster. I really think last year's team was significantly better than what we saw. Also, he kept dudes fighting and playing all year, regardless of the record.
    3. To me, this truly is year 1. Year 1.5 at best.

I also think we're pivoting. Zigging while others are zagging. Hoiberg and crew were on the cutting edge with transfers. But now that everyone is doing it and it's way weirder, I like the traditional guys they're bringing in. Lawrence, Dawson, and Lloyd are all supposedly just super solid players that fit well with Wilhelm, McPherson, Oleg, and Tominaga (Bryce and Trey are gone don't even try to think about them here next year. Won't happen). And, supposedly, Blaise Keita is maybe the best big available out there. Let's give this time.

I would agree. Seems to hold his own against good competition.

Not sure I can handle over dribbling because I have never seen that work in a team environment but I get what you mean.  I don’t care if Bryce takes 30 shots if it is the right basketball play.  If you are open, go.  If not, move the ball.  Problem is he hasn’t figured that out yet.  Pressed way too much right now.  Hopefully it will come around.  He is young after all.

No I don't see Fred on the hot seat. Should get 2 more seasons.

Two things we need more than anything are a PG that understands his role and the system and a legitimate big man that’s at least a threat down low when shots aren’t falling.

i think we may have that in Blaise next year. But the PG issue is the most important, and I don’t see some grad transfer PG changing that next year. We need a PG that’s developed and groomed in the system over multiple years for this to work and look like it’s supposed to.

Our offense gets folks open looks.  We didn’t get many layups today because Indiana has an absolute stud down low and scouted our pick and roll also.  This offensive philosophy isn’t nearly as bad as it appears.  You could have Phil Jackson running the triangle and it would look like garbage if you can’t make open looks.

Wilcher and Tominaga starting up an ice cube factory didn’t help either.  Pretty rough first start for Keisei.

The best part of the game was our ability to play some defense…when we want to, we can do it.  Pretty clear we are a team where defensive effort leads to offensive points.

Bryce got a real necessary lesson today.  Let’s see what he does with it moving forward.

Not exactly the hottest take in the history of mankind, but this offense looks really bad when no one can make a 3-pt shot.

Maybe it was tired legs, but I think it had more to do with our really poor offensive flow today. Seems like our point guard kind of gives up on running the offense when the other guys aren't making shots right away. My guess is when Verge is our leading scorer this season, we will lose a lot. (Granted, we probably will lose a lot either way.)

Half court defense was good most of the way, but we had one guy making bad switch calls and freelancing too much once again.

I did like starting Keisei - thought the offensive flow was best in those first several minutes when he was in there. I like the way he moves without the ball, and it seems to get other guys moving a bit too. I do think Edwards can play at this level, but they need to figure out a good role for him.

Ball sticks in verge and Bryce’s hands. I know we all love Bryce, but he’s definitely a volume shooter

He's redshirting behind two experienced guards who won't be here next year. Q has every chance to get the starting spot next year at the lead guard.

Fred I don't think would invest a redshirt in him if he didn't want him in the program long term. Look at Elijah wood last year as an example

I continue to be impressed by Quaran McPherson who I've only seen play in a couple of minutes in an exhibition game.  He's sitting by the coaching staff during regulation and then is the only guy on the sideline not losing his shit when they don't get the call. He spots Verge and immediately goes over to help him up.

I read this thread before watching the game for the first time via replay…I saw us up by 23 over a nice opponent with about 4 minutes to go and was wondering which game you all watched.  Isn’t this - considering the opponent - our best win of the year?  Can’t count exhibitions.

You recruit 5 stars to be 5 stars, and you recruit enough depth that somebody can spark you off the bench.  It just won’t always be the same guy.  Today it was Keisei.  Bryce is just a flat out stud - he is coming into his own and we are all witnesses.

The situation at PG will sort itself out and it already is.  Webster is such a luxury.  And also a great example why you don’t just transfer when they recruit over you.  He’s been team-first since last year and that never wavered after they brought it Verge late.  He’s your glue guy.

Coach has to find some pieces to get us by until Trey returns.  He was the heart of the team and set the tone with his intensity on both ends of the court.  Some of our folks have really stepped up.  Others - no reason to name them - have not.  Look at the minute distribution tonight…trending.

As Fred said recently (paraphrasing) things are never as good or bad as they seem in the moment and that's why they review game tape. I definitely agree with this and is one reason I try to re-watch games before critiquing the team/individual players.

hugh42 reacted to tcp in On further reflection, in the sober light of day, that was truly awful.
to think we've got maybe 30 of these to go still! the drama's gonna be off the charts!

i just assumed hoiberg knows his team and figured the best way to teach a point is to let them totally fail on their own.

every team's different in personality, and maybe that's just this team's.

he's not stupid. i do suspect there's a bit of a buy in or role issue with a couple of players who've been swearing up and down their way will work, and if you've got hard heads, sometimes the best thing to do is just watch them completely face plant.
