Im taking this as a “we had bigger fish to fry” type scenario?Hopefully, but these kinds of decisions are made every day at portal time. How far to go on NIL with each player/agent, figuring out what's real, drawing a line knowing that's effectively letting a guy go. I'm probably stating the obvious, but this is so much about money now, rather than a better fit at a new program, etc. And on the program end, there comes a point where the price is higher than the player is good, and you have to keep some dry powder.
The good news is in the play for pay era, our new AD is totally committed to that, and will overtly support 1890 until the system changes and allows direct institutional participation or changes to an employee model. Fred is very pleased with Dannen so far. Fred has almost double what he had to work with on the pay players budget from a year ago. We're all in on the current system.
We're really trying to get a visit from Payne, but the NIL demands are very, very high. We're getting a visit from Essigian, assuming he doesn't commit to Indiana on his visit there. Kyle supposed to come next weekend but concerned about Wake giving him a huge number, like they did Sallis.

This. And I'm glad we're not selling our soul to just go get the most athletic guys out there just to try and beat 2024 Texas A&M that shot unbelievable from 3 and would have beaten almost anyone on that night. We have to continue doing the model that has won us Big Ten games over the last 14 months, which is smart, hard-working, unselfish, experienced dudes who can shoot and will give max effort on defense. You can't win a tournament game if you can't get to the tournament.
After the A&M game, some fans seem to think we should be getting athletic freaks and that those same players will also be great shooters and super effective in Fred's 5-out offense and will also have the discipline, work ethic and attitude of a Sam Griesel/Sam Hoiberg. Newsflash: if you are all of those things you are in the NBA or getting offered by UConn/North Carolina/Kansas/Duke.
We don't need to sell our soul or completely change course, but we do need to get more athletic to successfully compete on an ongoing basis. It's not an all or nothing thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if we turned him down rather than vice-versa...just saying!
Didn't turn him down directly, but indirectly, we declined to dig deep and come close to what Xavier was willing to pay.

Great summary, Navin. For fun, I'll add this: Jeffrey Grace was brought in a few times to be the designated fouler at the end of games, and he performed that role admirably.

Sigh. I really wish our radio guys would stop telling us how dominant pitcher "X" is looking. A crooked number is sure to follow (other than Sears).
Last night was the most blatant example of that ever. Comical. 3 up/3 down in the first, Horn gets the first out of the second, has a 1-2 count, and the radio guys talk about how sharp he is tonight....and the very next pitch goes yard. Can't make it up.

10 runs should be enough to win a D1 game. We’ve gotta figure out midweek pitching
The pitching gets all the focus (and it has been bad mid-week), but the defense has been a problem all season. I like the chances of the pitching improving in-season than I do the defense. As just one example, Carey's error last night was a killer. The defense is mediocre at best, and there are a couple of flat-out liabilities out there.

It was always about the dollar and never about the kids. Quite a shame that some of the largest sporting events in the world are now on cable-only platforms. Soon to be streaming-only.
People roll their eyes at my “change is bad” outlook on life, but I’m sticking to it. -
It wasn't as bad as I expected at the park. Seats behind 3rd base dugout fairly protected. On the concourse you could feel the wind, for sure. Key play was getting a double play ball to get out of the top of the 5th with only giving up 1 run. A crooked number looked inevitable. The momentum shifted, and we dominated from that point on.

I noticed a 6'3" guard from Bridgeport, NE. I do not remember the name from state, but that might be a pick up we could get. Does anyone have the 411 on Ruthie Loomis
Loomis-Goltl is a post player who redshirted at CU this year. Wondering if she will portal down a level—just speculation on my part. I think her younger sister signed with Northern Colorado; perhaps they will play together. Nebraska didn’t offer Ruthie previously.

Nobody minds if a ref misses an occasional call. We're all imperfect humans and don't expect perfection. AND I think MOST officials WANT to do a good job. But there are ENOUGH bad officials that a way to weed them out needs to be found. Not just in the B1G, referees seem to be deciding how the game is called on the fly. And they seem to LIKE the knock down, drag out brutish kind of play of schools like Illinois. And they seem to cave in to coaches like Underwood and Painter who must scare (?) them as games go on. What can Izzo do to them that Hoiberg can't. I wonder???
Conferences need to tell officials to call the game according to the rules! My greatest gripe is how a player driving into the lane INITIATES contact with a defender and yet the defender get called for the foul. A close second is when a defender goes straight up and the offensive player jumps INTO him and yet the defender is whistled. Is that really how the rules are written? In addition, the evaluation process of referees (is there one?) and how they score needs to be PUBLICIZED. Has anyone ever seen a list of how refs grade out? PAY them enough to do the job (if we can hand out million dollar checks to players surely we can figure out a way to pay refs enough!) but make continued employment contingent on how they grade over a season.
One of my pet peeves is when the offensive player TRAVELS into contact, and a foul is called on the defender.

Sucks that guys are leaving but Diop is not much of a production loss, just a loss of future potential.
Bummed on J-law and Rice. I get it with Wilcher. The others are meh.
Curious who gets added if they still want to run an 8-9 guy rotation. A few spots might be filled with “project” guys.
Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkI'll predict that we'll get better guys in the portal than those who left.

Rice was playable so I think that's why a lot of people and probably the staff thought he'd be back. However, he likely wasn't starting and we're bringing in more dudes. Likely just run of the mill looking for more playing time.
The staff has known for a while that he wouldn’t be coming back

Tony Perkins entered the portal. Big loss for Iowa.
I don't know about that. He really struggled toward the end of the season. May have been nudged.
