Disagree with this 'everyone hates Nebraska' paranoia.

There is some value to killing our next two opponents as opposed to just beating them soundly but if I had to choose between beatdown and getting minutes for Rice, Matar, and Boogie because we might need them when we play in conference I'm choosing the latter.

Here's the thing.  I'm all for sportsmanship and whatnot, but the NCAA Tournament is like a private club.  If you aren't a member (like @jimmykc's favorite team Kansas is) you aren't gonna get invited to the dance just by doing the bare minimum to qualify...and Nebraska is most certainly NOT a member of that privileged club.  We only get in if they are forced to take us.

Programs like Indiana or UCLA are going to get in on name recognition alone.  If they manage 16 or 17 wins and a NET somewhere approaching the 40's then it's "oh yes, NET #51?  That's pretty good, you really pass the EYE TEST *wink wink* this year...come on in, here's your 9 seed.  Let me punch your membership card on your way in".

For us to be safely invited into the dance without a conference championship, it will take a minimum 21 wins and a NET somewhere in the low 30's to upper 20's...and even then we're looking at probably at best a 10 seed.  Almost entirely because of the name on the front of our jerseys.  The committee will find any excuse possible to keep us out...especially if they need to make room for Arkansas or Mizzou.  In our case it's "I'm sorry NET #40 Nebraska, you had a great season and all and we really wanted to have you in this year but, gosh, there were just so darn many tough choices that needed to be made and, unfortunately we just didn't have room for, uh, YOU at the dance.  Better luck next year though."

So for us to get where we want we need to really open eyes and force the doors open.  We do that by just ripping the ever loving crap out of our overmatched opponents, and when we have an opportunity to embarrass an NCAA Tournament country club member like KSU on their home court, we need to take every opportunity to make that game as much of a blowout as possible.

Like it or hate it, this is our reality.  We are the red-headed stepchild of college hoops.  Everybody hates us and they all want to see us suffer and stay mediocre to bad where we "belong" to ensure plenty of room for the privileged ones.  We have a different set of rules to play by, which means we need to be half again as good just to have the same opportunities that they have.

But, you know, go ahead.  We can definitely be happy to squeak by mid- to low-major opponents by a dozen points and celebrate our wins like they mean something.  But just remember that that alone is not good enough for us to do the thing that I think we all agree we want to do, and that is to make the NCAA Tournament, and God forbid, actually win when we get there.

I'd donate a lot of blood to flip the locations of the Illinois and Purdue games.

We'd have a shot against Illinois at home, but playing in Champaign when they're good is a tall task.  Purdue is nearly untouchable regardless of where the game is played.

Any foul deemed "deliberate" during the last minute should be assessed a technical at the discretion of the referee if the point differential is 7 or more. It would end the long, boring parades to the foul line at the end of games and make tv time scheduling more predictable for the following game.

    2. Batenhorst was a bench player to start the season, probably doesn't have much of an NIL deal

What I’ve never understood since Nebraska joined the Big 10 is what exactly is the point/purpose of the two BTN alternate channels? I’ve only ever seen them utilized when BTN has two different 11:00 am football games. But wouldn’t a basketball game running long be the perfect opportunity to start the next game on BTN alternate? Otherwise there are 3 BTN channels showing the exact same basketball game!

I have some disagreements with you and I hope you take them all 100% personally.

I think the order, or maybe emphasis (?), is a bit off. Personally I believe #2 and #3 are the most important and it's hard to rank one of them higher than the other. The most important part of being a successful athletics program is having talent. There's really no replacement or substitute for it. Obviously, the question becomes about having the "right talent" that fits #2 and fits the culture/context of your program and your conference.

But as much as it pains me to say this, as it is my favorite aspect of basketball and coaching, but the tangible tactical/x's and o's/philosophy stuff is far and away the least important part. Obviously, you have to know this stuff and be competent in these tactical areas - and hire assistants who are nerds about it too - but it can't be your "thing." Or else you end up with Scott Frost, and what I worry we're seeing, Fred Hoiberg. Coach Hoiberg seems to have made a lot of changes to focus more on culture and intangibles, and bring in assistants who fill in the gaps. But, at the end of the day, I believe Coach is primarily a tactical guy who thinks that X's and O's and execution are the solution.

So to re-order your list to fit my thoughts... I would have it more like this:
    1. Recruiting/Talent Identification and Development/Leadership/Cohesiveness/Program Vision
I just don't think you can separate or remove any of those things, or put one ahead of the other. They're all on the same plane in my opinion.
    2. Program Intangible Consistency
More important than the X's and O's are non-negotiable things like Toughness, Communication, Accountability, Passion, Energy, Competitiveness, etc... Those intangible things that have to remain the same whether you're running zone, match-up, motion, continuity, it doesn't matter. Rarely is there a great coach out there who gets mentioned, and then the next thing mentioned is their tactical stuff. It's all about leadership and intangibles.
    -
    -
    -
    3. X's and O's, Schemes, etc...
The only thing I believe that has to happen here is that they have one, are willing to adapt and change, can coach what they believe in, and can find the guys who fit what they are trying to do (or change when they don't have that). But it can't be their main focus, and it can't be their major appeal.

Honestly - Tim Miles should have been the guy. I think he actually fits, in theory, what all of us want in a head coach here.
    - Won at multiple levels and it was his programs (not like the Doc/Gillespie thing).
    - Had a unique and engaging personality that seemed to fit NU/Midwest.
    - When he was hired there wasn't any, or very little anyways, talk about him being an offensive mind or a defensive guru. You just knew he won and knew how to build a program, and identify talent to fit what he wanted to do.

I have my theories on why I believe Miles didn't succeed here and I have shared them to much disagreement from people who (seemed to at least) have a semi-personal/personal relationship with Coach Miles, so I don't want to get into that again. But personally I believe we're probably looking for another Coach Miles type. Won at every level. Gets the area and is engaging. His teams have intangible blood lines that run throughout every program he's lead or been a part of. Has an X's and O's system he knows how to coach.

    6-9  255  So 3 Dawson Garcia
    6-11  230  Jr 10.3

    Player to watch: Dawson Garcia
Garcia is currently averaging 20.5 points and 8 rebounds per game as well as drawing fouls at an elite rate.  He also has the ability to pass out of the post.  His outside shot hasn't been great this season, just 28% at this time

    Player to watch: Cam Christie
The younger brother of Max Christie is a star in the making and has been a remarkable jump shooter, hitting from 50% from non-paint 2s and 51.7% from 3 thus far.

    Others to watch
Pharrel Payne is a load down low and an elite finisher. He's no threat at the 3 and is a lousy at the FT line. Mitchell is the main 3pt shooter on the team and hit from well over 40% at Pepperdine; currently hitting 35% with the Gophers. Hawkins is small at PG but lightning quick and able to draw contact to get to the FT line though not a great finisher in the paint; 3pt shot has been off this year. Joshua Ola-Joseph is a glue-guy type having a nice shooting year thus far. Isaiah Ihnen is a stretch 4 who appears to be struggling at the moment so his playing time and shooting are down in favor of Payne. SG Braeden Carrington has been struggling from 3 this season, shooting 17.4%.

    The Skinny:

The Huskers get a chance to go on the road and try and wash the taste of a 29 point home loss out of their mouth.  On one had, putting up a KenPom level bad 3pt shooting night isn't going to happen most games. On the other hand, this is a team that can't afford to get into a rut of becoming unfocused defensively and short on effort when the ball isn't going in the hoop.  This game is a chance to try and get right vs an opponent with issues of their own.

This is likely a make or break year for Ben Johnson who has some nice pieces around Dawson Garcia. Defensively the Gophers are a bit like Creighton where they'll run you off the FT line and are pretty good at defending without fouling which is a problem for a team like Nebraska that isn't keen on scoring inside. One thing that should help is that the Gopher offense tends to be sloppy with the ball which should lead to some easy runouts.  We'll see what adjustments the Huskers might have in mind though.

Defensively look for the Huskers to continue to double team the post while running guys at Garcia from different spots. Part to focus on limiting Garcia is that you're likely to have some secondary player have a career night against the Huskers. The key is to not give up both.

Minnesota is talented and will go on runs but they provide a winnable road game opportunity because they're also wildly inconsistent. Win or lose how Nebraska handles this adversity and its business on the defensive end will be what's going to define this team.

    Prediction: Nebraska 68 - Minnesota 64

I'm going to say it... HCFH needs to get into at least the NIT or he should be let go, and even then, unless it's the NCAA, it should be strongly considered.
IMO, he's coaching for his job this year.
I don't care if he shows some incremental improvement again.
If he doesn't make a post season this will be his 5th consecutive year.
Tim Miles was here 7 yrs and made a post season in 3 of those years including his final 2 years.
Doc Sadler in 6yrs made 3 postseasons.
Barry Collier in 6yrs made 2 postseasons including his final year.

From the '00-'01 season until now (4 coaches) we have only had 2 seasons where we had a winning conference record.
We went to NCAA's for one of those and the other we didn't. The second one is the biggest screw job ever by the committee and I'll go to my grave believing that one.
During that same time span we've had 11 losing records and 2 where we where .500.
Doc had one season where we where .500 and Miles has both of those seasons where he had a winning conference record, and for him it was either feast or famine.

Seeing multiple Nebraska kids on the CU roster and one of them absolutely go off is sickening. I don't care about the circumstances of how they ended up there.
We need to lock down the state. I know that CU is just one game, however we need to be better prepared. This game, like it or not, needs to be treated like a true rivalry.
Our record playing them through Collier ('00-'01) to present ('23-'24) is abysmal.
This loss is embarrassing and should NEVER happen...period.
I'm tired of year over year us not being competitive in this game. Cut the X hype videos and win the damn game or at least be competitive.

We have everything in place to have a consistent winning program and with NIL that tilts the scale even more in our favor.
Speaking of of NIL, every one on this board should be donation to 1890. I currently give $20/month and plan to increase that by $10/month each year going forward.
This has a direct impact on us being able to compete for top talent both HS and in the portal.

LNKtrnsplnt reacted to NUdiehard in State of the Team after 8 games
At the start of the season, if someone said Huskers would be 7-1 after 8 games, most would likely have taken that.  Not great, because we would know the loss was most likely to Creighton, but at least the Huskers took care of business in all the other games.  If it was also known that Huskers would win comfortably and beat the spread on most games, that would be a bonus.  With that said, we have now seen enough of this team and the players to get a good feel for what we have and don't have, areas of surprise (in a good way) and areas of concern.  This is my general "state of the team" overview at this stage of the season, feel free to comment or disagree.

    1.  This team is not as deep as we all hoped/thought coming into the season.  We have 6 legit rotation players (Keisei, JL, Williams, Allick, Mast and Gary).  After that it drops off pretty fast.  Unless CJ is hitting 40+% on his 3s, it is hard to justify his playing time.  He is small, slow and really struggles on defense.  Sam H plays incredibly hard and is scrappy on defense, but he is also small and limited offensively.  Scrappiness only take you so far in the B1G.  But so far, the biggest dropoff has been Boogie.  He is playing decent minutes and averaging a whopping 2.5 pts/game, at 19%FG and 13% (2-15) on 3s, while on defense he is S-L-O-W.

    2.  Time for the time/rotation to shorten/change.  CJ, Sam and Boogie's minutes all must decrease, and based on their play, at least one of them should be completely out of the rotation (as of now, that would be Boogie IMO).  On the flip side, time to give Rice some rotation minutes and see what he can do.  If Eli shows he can be a solid contributor, this will likely come at CJ's expense (unless CJ suddenly gets on fire from 3, which he is capable)

    3.  This is not last year's team (at least not yet).  There is some selfish play, and dare I say there may even be some tension/hostility between certain players.  I thought maybe I was just reading too much into things, but based on other peoples posts, others have observed some of it as well.

    4.  Keisei is still the most potent offensive weapon on this team.  And it appears that some players on the team resent this fact.  This must end.  The primary goal should be to get Keisei as many good/open looks as possible.  Keisei should not be having to do constant step-back's to get open, nor should he have to constantly create shots off the dribble.  Last year, his teammates ran sets and set picks to get him open looks, time for this year's teammates to do the same.

    5.  Everyone loves Allick and his effort, but he is what he is.  The experiment of having his shoot multiple 3s each game has to end.  And frankly, he should never be the offensive focal point, whether inside or outside.  Have others noticed he has a bit of "butter" hands?  He rarely catches the ball cleanly, whether  by pass or rebound.  Too much risk going into him too often, only when he is wide open and has a clear advantage.

    6.  JL deserves considerable praise for all his work in converting to PG, and overall, he has been pretty solid in that role.   But why oh why did his conversion to PG result in him forgetting how to shoot?  Man, what an unfortunate tangent  He's playing massive minutes yet averaging only 4 points per game on 32% FG and 20% on 3s (5-25).

    7.  Many people believe today's modern college basketball is largely guard-oriented.  Our 3 primary guards (JL, Sam and Boogie) are averaging 4.0, 2.5 and 2.4 points per game, and 2 of those 3 (JL and Boogie) on atrocious shooting percentage.  This just isn't going to get it done.  Creighton wasn't even guarding JL at the 3.  Same with Boogie.  This results in a clogged paint, or more emphasis on Keisei, making things significantly more difficult for all the other players.

    8.  Right now, the only players on this team who I feel confident shooting a 3 are Keisei, Williams, Mast and Sam.  If Rice was playing, I would probably add him to the list.  I really want to add CJ, but man he just is so inconsistent.  We wanted to believe we could play 5 out, but we can't.  It is not reality at this time.

    8.  Wrong players shooting the wrong shots.  There have been too many games in which Gary, or Allick or Boogie shot more 3s than Keisei or Williams.  Last game, Allick and Gary combined for more 3s (6) than Keisei and Williams combined.  And McDermott laughed all the way to a 30 point victory.  I realize the defensive emphasis was on Keisei and Williams, but this goes back to the team running an offense as team designed to get the best shooters the best shots.

    9.  Overall, this team is slow and rather unathletic.  Even against teams like Duquesne, this was evident.  Which means we have to beat teams with skill, teamwork and shooting.  So far, the shooting has been a let down, but some of this is because they still are not playing 100% as a team.

    10.  Before the season I stated I was curious about Williams because I had never seen him play.  His stats seemed solid, yet he wasn't a starter at Charlotte.  So far, I still am curious.  What is he?  He definitely has been "solid".  But can he be bettter?  Once again, his stats are excellent (14.6 pts/game on 45/42/90).  But does he have a killer instinct.  Can he take his game to the next level in the big games (had only 6 points vs. Creighton).  Many call him "mature", "disciplined", etc.  I hope it is all these "positive" attributes, but it is hard to know based on his demeanor.  He also is the player that seems to have an issue with Keisei.

    11.  Time for Fred to start playing the top 6 more minutes per game.  He is treating the players like they are made of glass.  Keisei is being subbed out within the first 5 minutes of the game.  No players are playing more than 28-30 minutes?  Versus Creighton, Williams only played 21 minutes and Keisei only 25.  I realize it was a blowout, but in contrast, Creighton had players playing 33, 33, 32, 28, 28 minutes.   Nebraska only had one player with more than 28 minutes (JL with 29).

    12.  The rebounding in the last 3 games has been a massive disappointment.  Is this a bad fluke, or is it the reality of this team.  Some of this goes back to the lack of athleticism of the players, but some of it is because of lack of block outs, positioning, and just flat out fighting for rebounds.  Can they get the rebounding mojo back, or will they continue to get dominated by the bigger and more athletic teams in the B1G?

There was no energy in the building today, both from the team and the fans. I’m hopeful that in the future the crowd can provide that energy when the team is playing a little sluggish.

It seems to me that BW does not want to ever pass the ball to Keisei. There were a couple games early where Keisei was forcing it a lot, but today he was clearly looking to get others there shot and move the ball. Something has to get figured out here.

I’m a little bummed that Lloyd didn’t get to play. I’m curious if he has anything that he can offer the rotation, and he just needs his chance to crack into it, or if he is just not quite ready for this level yet.

Jones for CSF can score. I really hope this injury doesn’t linger as I hope they can win a few games this year and help our SOS.

    Nota bene:
Nebraska is 2-0 all time vs Cal St. Fullerton with the smallest margin of victory at 24 points Nebraska is looking to start 7-0 for the first time in over 30 years (92-93 season) Bruce Bowen played for the Titans from 89-93 This was the team that Latrell Wrightsell played for last season
    KenPom most used lineup
PG SG SF PF C Pct 1 7 DJ Brewton
    6-3  200  Sr 2 Max Jones
    6-4  210  Jr 21 Grayson Carper
    6-6  195  Jr 32 John Mikey Square
    6-6  225  Jr 13 Vincent Lee
    6-9  235  Sr 11.6

    Player to watch: Max Jones
Jones has gone from a secondary scorer to the primary scorer and his shooting percentages have plummeted. Jones gets to the FT at an elite level.

    Others to watch
Vincent Lee converts at high percentage inside and this year he's a perfect 16-16. F/C John Mikey Square has also not missed this season...though that's because he's yet to take a shot. JMS has mostly been in foul trouble or ineffective. Assists and steals leader DJ Brewton is the second leading scorer. He's a terrible shot though so it's typically volume scoring at best. On one of the worst 3pt shooting teams in D-1, Grayson Carper is arguably their best shooter. 6'2" SG Donovan Oday is a scoring option off the bench. One missing piece is returning Big West defensive player of the year Tory San Antonio. The 6'3" senior guard has been unavailable for unknown reasons thus far but would be a boost on both sides of the floor if he played today.

    The Skinny:
This is more of a traditional trap game than Duquesne because part of a trap game is underestimating your opponent and Cal St. Fullerton fits the bill much more than the Dukes did. Dedrique Taylor has a very good track record with the Titans and likely will have them playing better ball as the season wears on. Right now, it's a WIP.

The Titans have traditionally been a defensive team under Taylor and typically will try to take away inside looks. Expect Nebraska to continue its outside barrage. Offensively, CSF is a dribble drive type offense with shoddy 3pt shooting....a recipe for disaster against the Huskers. The Titans will attempt to draw contact and score at the FT line....this could get ugly as Nebraska under Hoiberg tends to defend without fouling.

Let's punt on trap game talk until December

Prediction: Nebraska 74 - Cal St. Fullerton 54

I don’t watch CU much, I despise them with everything I have and take great pleasure when they lose. I’ve been in an office with 70% Jay alums and trust me fellas, I want this game more than any other game and I know it’s all due to personal reasons. Donuts for the entire office are on the line. But the trash talking from the sweaters is unbearable at times. I’m always reminded they’ve won in the tournament we can’t ever seem to make.

IMHO, Baylor is having to shoulder the load offensively because Kaluma and Nembhard were athletic enough to drive to the rim and put pressure on the defense. Ashworth isn’t the same. If the outside shots aren’t falling they quickly show themselves as a one dimensional team.
