I think the difference is  no Walker. Same cuts just no delivery. Mast is Ok but not Walker...

Probably right on that comparison. Walker was a terrific player though I don't recall anyone else finding KT on cuts a lot last year. Imo, the biggest difference this year is how physically refs are letting defenders "guard" KT. Just seems to me he gets held, bumped off routes, hacked on drives and generally abused. A memo must have told refs that was OK.

I get that the goaltending call was a bad call - but I don't think it is fair to reverse it 3 minutes later.   Particularly when the other ref made a very obvious make-up call on the very next play that I don't think there is any way he calls if the goaltending call had not been made.

I guess I don't understand goaltending. I THOUGHT it was called for one of two reasons. Most obviously when the ball has reached its peak and started down. (Clearly, that was not the case on the shot in question). However, isn't it also supposed to be called with the defender pins to ball to the board regardless of where it is ? That DID occur on this shot and, IMO, the goaltending call should have stood. Perhaps that is an older rule that is no longer used?

...beyond the inconsistency is the lack of transparency/accountability. Coaches and players can't criticize the refs. Which is OK generally. But sometimes refs DESERVE to be called out. Who's gonna call them out in a publicly meaningful way if the coaches cannot?  The Big Ten Network? LOL

This! Bad and self absorbed refs stay bad and self absorbed. Bad performance at one game is followed by bad performance game after game. If I did my job as horribly as these guys did, I would not have it very long. Is there such a shortage of refs that they have to hire poor performers? Is there such a lack of training that they aren't schooled in how things should be done? Is there such a lack of oversight they get away with with ineptitude? We ALWAYS review employee performance. Does that happen after a game? Who does it? If it is NOT being done either by the conference or the NCAA, how can they possibly hope for anything like excellence?

  4. Let me begin this by saying I in no way blame the refs for who won or lost this game. Creighton completely outplayed us and earned the win. That said, the refs in this game were horrible and their performance DID effect the outcome of this game. A number of issues could be cited but I will mention these:

    * McDermott should have been T'd up for the way he behaved in the first half. Instead of being penalized, though, he seemed to be rewarded by the refs changing how they began to officiate the game.

    * The call right at the end of the half should have been an offensive foul since the CU player clearly stepped into the Husker player and initiated the contact. Instead it goes against the defender and led to KT's technical foul and four made free throws. What could have been an energizing moment for us at the end of the half instead turns into a deflating moment.

    * Creighton players seemed to me to be constantly setting moving screens without consequence. IN PART it impacted our defenders' inability to defend 3 point shots. And we all know how CU rained down 3s.

    * When KT ran down a loose ball after a good defensive effort, he clearly could have got stopped and the Huskers could have begun an offensive possession. INSTEAD, the CU player ran into him and knocked him out of bounds. Rather than that being a foul, KT was ruled out of bounds, CU got possession and scored.

Again, I am NOT saying this changed who won or lost. But officiating DOES impact how the game develops. IMO, this was horrible work by the officials and it all seemed to flow one direction. Am I wrong? Can anyone point out similar stuff that worked in our favor? More importantly, who holds officials responsible for the work they do? If I had my way, this crew, but especially the official working nearest to the CU bench, should have to pay a price for poor performance during this game. What are your thoughts?

    And we have 7 wins.

And 7 players shooting 35% (rounded) or better from 3-point range.

    Four at 40% or better.

Four guys averaging between 14 and 16 points per game.

Our portal post is averaging a double-double.

Our portal SG is shooting almost 42% from 3 and over 90% from the line while posting a 2.4:1 assist/turnover ratio.

Our portal native Nebraskan is putting up darn close to the numbers he posted a year ago as a starter at New Mexico in 6 fewer minutes per game.

Our SG-converted-into-a-PG has dished 23 assists to only 10 turnovers on the season, and zero turnovers in the last 3 games.

What we didn't find in the portal we seemed to have found within our own numbers.

It'll be interesting to see what we do on Sunday, but it looks for all the world like all of our major roster needs over the off-season have been addressed.

This just has the looks of a team that's going to win some games this year.

A lot goes into making this true but is it too much of a stretch to say the PRIMARY reason is because Mast is on our side? I LOVE how Walker played the game last year but, IMO, Mast commands more attention from the opponents and that makes everyone else's job easier.

  6. Don't care too much one way or the other about anitics. They are only young once and ought to be able to howl at the moon sometimes. I kind of like it when KT hits a big 3 just before a clock stoppage and goes down to run into the other goal pads. IN GAME control is very different. Example, at one point in the OSU game, KT must have been abused by an OSU player but no call was made while he was on D. On the ensuing offensive position, he mixed it up with an OSU player, pushed him and got called for a foul. He can't do to that in a tight game. The exact opposite vs OSU was Mast. He was getting pushed around, elbowed and otherwise brutalized all game long. Mast got even by making good plays. He got the rebound, boxed a guy out so another player could get to the basket, made a pass or busted a move on O and scored a basket. Mast may holler with everyone else off the court but while the clock is running he is an intense player doing a great job! Glad he is on our side. Our other guys need to take him as their role model.

  7. Been awhile since I've posted but here are my impressions:

    - Trey is the talented thug you are glad to have on your side in a fight.

    - Bryce is the real deal as a scorer but he is not muscular enough to get his shots on his own. James Palmer was the best player wearing a Husker uniform that I recall at going to the basket and getting points all by himself. But he was an older better muscled player. I hope Bryce decides not to be a "one and done" player.

    - Verge is electric. That means lights go on sometimes and everybody says, "Oooooo." It means he zaps you sometimes and you go, "Owwwwww." If only he could find as much delight in making simple passes as he does in making spectacular ones. When he dished it to Andre for the dunk, I wish every team mate had rushed over to him and chest bumped him.

    - If our 3 pt specialists don't figure out how to hit open shots in the non-con part of our schedule, it will be a cold winter IMO.

    - THANK GOD for Andre! His energy and quality of play were outstanding and he elevated everyone on the team. I only recall one Husker diving to the floor for a loose ball all night and it was him.

Also didn’t play defense the second half, among other glaring problems.   First 3 minutes of the second half wasn’t on the refs.  It was us.

Agree with this entirely but the refs let PSU play much more aggressively than we were allowed to throughout the 2nd half. Even Bardo as the B1G color guy commented on it multiple times and he is not averse to letting players be physical. Four things come to mind. I apologize for not knowing exactly when they occurred:

1 - The near mid-court collision between Thor and the PSU player while both were going after the ball. How is that called a foul Thor instead of the PSU player. Admittedly, it is a toss up call and probably should have been a no call. But it goes against us. Why?

2 - When TM and the PSU player both go to the floor and the PSU player lands ON TM. TM is laying there with his hand up in obvious pain. He is NOT trying to hold the PSU player. If anyone committed a foul it was the PSU player. A no call would have again been my preference but the call goes against Huskers and the play puts TM out of the game for a crucial part of the game. Bardo started to comment and swallowed his mic.

3 - Harrar is allowed to push and pull our guys all night long including a play late in the game on where TM has position to at least try for a rebound and Harrar -- from behind him -- pulls TM out of the way. Another PSU player get the rebound and put back. On our side Derek gets called for a foul for putting an arm up and into Harrar's chest -- a thing basketball players do ALL THE TIME -- and Derek gets hit with a foul. Bardo actually said that didn't look like a foul on Derek.

4 - Derek (I think) comes to the top of the key to receive a pass and #15 for PSU lays on his back and swatting at the ball from behind. No call.

I know refs are human and miss things. And I know that if we had shot the ball better (esp. Lat) we still would have won the game. We lost the game because PSU played better in the 2nd half. But the way the refs called the game helped PSU to a significant extent. PSU was allowed to be VERY aggressive and physical. We were not. It made a difference.
