Nebraska’s Fred Hoiberg is the recipient of the 2023-24 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year award.  The award is presented annually to the top head coach in division I college basketball.  Hoiberg led the Cornhuskers to their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2014. Nebraska finished with 23 victories - the program’s most since 1991.  Nebraska was top-40 nationally in adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency, holding opponents to a top-20 defensive field goal percentage. The Cornhuskers finished third in the Big 10, posting a winning record for only the third time since they joined the league for the 2011-12 season. Hoiberg is the second Husker men’s basketball coach to earn the honor, as Tim Miles was the 2014 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year.

The Jim Phelan Award is named in honor of a legendary bow-tied coach who spent his entire head coaching career at Mount Saint Mary’s University. Phelan graduated from La Salle University in 1951 and played one season in the NBA with the Philadelphia Warriors. After a brief professional career, Phelan went to Mount St. Mary’s as an assistant in 1953. One year later he began his historical career as a head coach. He led the Mountaineers to 16 Division II NCAA tournaments. Five times they advanced to the Final Four and he led them to the DII National Championship in 1962. When he retired in 2003, after coaching for 49 years, he had amassed 830 wins (overall record of 830-524) in all divisions. In those 49 years, 19 of his teams amassed 20 or more wins in a season. In 2008 he was inducted into National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. The recipient of the annual award is determined by a 10-member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches, as well as two senior staff members of collegeinsider.com.

Based on what I'm seeing from last year, 271 teams had signed 1+ transfers in 2022-2023. Of the team's who signed at least one transfer, the average amount of players they signed was 4.9.

I haven't found a solid data source of how many LEAVE for these types of schools, but the inverse can be helpful as well. I'd imagine those numbers will be higher this season.

I also read somewhere that 33% of NCAA basketball players end up transferring at some point in their careers. That stat isn't overly helpful as there could be repeat offenders, but also helpful context.

This isn't Uncle Naismith's basketball anymore...

Correct, so leverage technology to actually help them.

I have a hard time believing that referees are that much worse than they used to be. I think technology has allowed their mistakes to be much, much more noticeable than in years past.

I get my wife every year. She is pretty gullible.  She is a big NU volleyball fan so I told her today that Cook retired.  A few years ago I told her I received a job offer in another town and we would have to move.  I set it up by telling her I had something important to tell her when she got back from the store.  My daughter started crying when I told them and I got slapped when I said April Fools.  I keep it simple and painless now.

Yeah, I see this more of taking Keita’s spot and giving us a true backup center. Because who was that this year?

I'm sorry, Sliver. I'd just like to announce that I'm taking my lack of talent to.......um, my living room. I'd like to thank my bedroom for the last two years of support and love. I really felt like a welcome part of this house, but, sadly, my future opportunities lie elsewhere towards the front of the house.

(feel free to cut and paste anywhere someone is transferring. I don't believe in copyright).

That;s the notorious rebellion team of Boone and Strickland. They had high expectations coming inbto that season and were expected to be the team that got that first win after the 91 team failed in that mission.

Once Nee and the players got their lines of communication un-screwed, the team most of us expected finally showed up. 96 was mmy last year in the Army and Ihad just gotten back from an extra long tour in Korea and was looking forward to decompressing with Nee-ball for that season. They finished well, that's for sure.

Last year it was Elite 8, and a foul away from the Final Four. He acquitted himself pretty well. Aurora's proud of their own. Tom Kropp will remain #1 in my book. Baylor's a close 2nd. Both are NBA ballers in their own right, they both traveled a different path. I wouldn't have chosen Kearney St. (Kropp) or So. Dak. St./CU (Scheierman) but that's their decision to make and live with, ultimately. I'm certainly not sad that CU didn't attain their N.C. goals. I'll go watch B.S. #55 in the pros, he's an elite passer with Jokic-like vision, yet not a seven-footer. It'll be interesting to see which team drafts him, I think he'd help Phoenix, for instance, since they lack a PG.... to each their own, I can't say I'd blame Baylor for pickin' that eastern Omaha squad since Freddy came off of a 7-win, 7-win, and 10-win seasons in succession. Now, it's over and done with at the college level. Maybe the next "B.S." kid will *want* to play in Lincoln, Nebraska, let's hope so after a 16-win and 23-win seasons back-to-back. GBR Always.

A's fans in baseball have had to deal with this for years, and you've had a split in their fandom as a result. One chunk of the old fan base has a saying: "you root for the laundry"--meaning the name on the uniform is your true object of allegiance. The other half, of course, begs to differ, pointing out that "laundry doesn't break base stealing records, or hit 40 plus homers in a season, or or or....".

I think what you're seeing is essentialyl the same dynamic that began years ago in so-called "small market" professional sports franchises. Likelywith the same result.

Our offense still scored 80 some points against a pretty stout A&M team. Offense wasn't our problem. Getting the homing beacon off our opponents every shot was.

Heck no you’re not the only
one— I’m so dang tired of the “Big 10 flops in March” narrative.  I hope we end up with a Purdue/Illinois championship.
