Outside of Dawson Garcia they didn’t have much talent.

Ben did a tremendous job to get them to win some games and be competitive. Not elite level coaching but seemed to get some buy in.

I think NIL is killing the gophers

Man I guess we will just disagree. Besides Garcia, Hawkins is a very good PG who led the league in assists and shoots it decent. He will be in high demand in the portal. Christie is projected as an NBA draft pick this year. Lots of big names are after Payne and we saw how good he is. Their 5th starter Mitchell is a 40% 3 point shooter. That is a very talented starting 5 and they had 3 nice energy guys off the bench. Should have been a tourney team IMO

Almost as surprising as the amount of success the Gophs had this last season.  Really thought they were on the come up but now IDK.

That was not surprising to me. I thought they should have been better, they had a lot of talent. Don’t think he did a real good job coaching them up IMO.

Pleasantly surprised by the rebounding rates from Essigian over the last couple of years. Will easily be a plus over Keisei or CJ in that department.  Not entirely sure what Griffiths brings in that department because of how dominant Cliff was there.

It looks like his rebounding picked up with his shooting when he started getting regular minutes the last 7 games. 3-6 boards a game, think that will improve as he gets stronger. Looks like maybe the light went on for him at the end of the season, excited to see what he brings

Thanks for the reply!    I sure hope this young man is grounded, in it for the long haul and loves dear old NU.  Those things are going to be needed most likely, because of his age and his direct competition.  My hunch is that he’s going to need patience and perseverance to have success here.  Those are rare qualities these days ( certainly in this context ).

I hope and am assuming his role has been discussed. With Gary and Brice gone there will be wing minutes to be had in 25. Might be why he came in early. Give everyone a chance to see what he has for a full year and decide if he can be relied on for PT when they are gone.

I am personally pretty high on him. Good size, strength, and athleticism. Believe he is going to shoot it at a high level to, always happy to beat out the blue team for an in state guy.

I am puzzled, and not in a disrespectful manner.  I simply have never heard Morgan or anyone from our coaching staff state that he is coming to Nebraska in order to be a bench or role player.

I believe he is coming here with every intention of being a starter.  In fact, I hope and pray that every player we are bringing in has the character and skills to earn a starting job.

The million dollar attribute though, is that they fight for a starting position; but mentally are capable of accepting and will thrive in whatever role is earned.

No worries, I agree that is the mindset they should all have. I have to believe Fred was very upfront with him in that he wants to have at least a 3 man rotation at the 4/5 and he would probably be the one starting on the bench unless we miss our other targets. He only played like 23 minutes a game in ND so it will not be a shock for him. I think part of the reason we targeted him is him being open to that role.

Isn’t that what he basically did for Wisconsin, come off the bench to provide a spark. He’ making a parallel move. Why? Don’t feel good about him at all!

Why is most of their good players leaving? Offense sucks and they were a mess chemistry wise last year down the stretch. Unhappy players leave.

Just because we got beat by Terrence Shannon, does not mean we need Terrence Shannon.

We have added athleticism and length. It’s going to help our defense tremendously, and that’s where we need to improve the most. We didn’t lose to A and M or Illinois because we couldn’t score enough. We lost because we gave up 98 points.

Agree and we beat Illinois the first time, #$@# refs

@GhostOfJoeMcCray , @Fullbacksympathy just tagging you since you've asked the same thing.

I probably should have rephrased my statement or said it differently. I really like Griffin. I think I like the Worster dude in theory too. I'm not seeing what we're doing with Morgan (or why we took that commit so early) with the other people that are out there still, our current roster, and what could still come open.

I also feel like there's 1-2 hyper athletic guys (guards specifically) we absolutely need to compete against certain teams (w/o overreacting to the A&M game just so we're clear here). And I haven't even seen one identified or visited.

And I think more of my other confusion - which is probably a better word - is actually on the other end, i.e., what/why are some of these people transfering? Like this Wisconsin shooter or the 'Nova guy? Maybe just my confusion with the transfer portal in general. Seems like a lot of guys are just making horizontal moves and putting themselves in similar situations.

Overall, I'm just an idiot and confused.

As for Morgan. I think we went after him early because he is a solid all around big guy who is willing to come off the bench. Most of those guys want starting roles. I think he is perfect as long as we get 1-2 more starter types.

In all it appears to me we are getting much more athletic and increasing our skill as well. We are not going to be Tx AM athletic but we should be stronger and more athletic than last year.

The one piece I wanted to see was a lead guard who could get in the lane and create for others. Maybe Ulis / Rollie can but I wanted to shoot high for that spot. We might have settled here for consistency over dynamic.

Overall if we get Kyle / Milicic (at least 1) I am going to be very happy and feels like we can be better than last year. Assuming they play for each other like the last two years.

Essegian is a career 34.5% over 2 years. Hausen is 39.5%. Keisei was right in the middle at 37.4%.

They're all different players though. 45% of Keisei's made field goals this season were 3 pointers. He scores a ton at the basket and gets to the free throw line. 88% of Hausen's made field goals were 3s and he does not shoot free throws. He subs in, stands outside the arc and shoots 3s. Like CJ Wilcher but even less interested in going to the basket. Essegian barely played this year so going off last year, 52% of his made shots were 3 pointers, and he got to the free throw line a decent amount.

IMO, if you want a legit 3 point specialist to come off the bench, you go with Hausen. Essegian and Janowski are closer to the same type of player, but I think Janowski is better and I'd rather see him get those minutes.

Hausen standing around the line is in a big part because of Novas offense. They pick the mismatches and everyone els spreads the floor. Might be why he is moving on.

i hope Jano is better than both and think he will be at some point. However I want to win now and not taking any chances if we don’t have to. We have room, let’s fill it up with proven guys and make a run

  10. 5 minutes ago, nustudent said:

They’ve been decent players on marginal teams and role players on good teams.   If Janowski can’t match that, then what are we hoping for from him.

They would role players here on hopefully a real good team, exactly what we want. I hope Jano can do it too but those guys are experienced high level shooters in major conferences and we have plenty of room. Better safe than sorry, get talent here and go from there.

I’m meh on Essegian.  Id rather almost roll with Janowski.    If we get Igor and Kyle, I’ll feel good about next year

I think he or the Nova kid would be great as 7-8 type guy both probably as good ot better as Wilcher as overall players. I probably favor the Nova kid a little more. I’m high on Jano too. PT at guard and wing will be competitive which is great.

Michigan State makes the most sense given their lineup openings, and that Frankie visited there last and postponed his announcement the next day, probably to let Chucky get his stuff in order.

And Izzy just made it certain Hoggard is not coming back. This seems the most logical place.

He still pulled defenders out of the lane because they knew he could shoot. Kyle’s defender wouldn’t have to set foot outside the lane.

I’m not saying the additions are bad or that I don’t want Kyle. I’m just refuting the comment from another poster that said we’re not moving away from what Fred does offensively. A guy like Kyle or Payne would absolutely change the offensive game plan, for better or worse.

Fred has had guys like him before. Still spread the floor with Kyle setting screens, pick’s roll etc. I’m not worried about that plus they really did not guard JA outside, they let him shoot and he did a good job of not firing them up like crazy and picked his spots well.

So the kid from Iowa is a guarantee?  One I don't feel all that great about that play

Seems so and the reviews from his practice squad time were positive. I am comfortable that he is a better point guard than JL was last year and I’m guessing he will be our back up or maybe he beats out Rollie. Either way we are in much better shape than last year.

I sure hope we will still take Kyle and Milicic... nothing against him, because I know we need younger guys too.  I just want to win next year

Without a doubt, they play totally different positions. Griffiths is a guard / wing and will be a big part of us winning next year IMO

  16. 30 minutes ago, nustudent said:

I don’t think Morgan is committing to be our 3rd string center.  He could go and start at Minnesota next year.

Neither are bad players, but I don’t see us ending up with all 3 (if Mast is healthy)

He definitely could but we are apparently paying him a lot more and he likes our Ag program. Plus we are looking like a tourney team. Not saying it is likely but it is a possibility that would be ideal. Probably more likely Mast is out.

  17. 2 minutes ago, nustudent said:

If it’s true that Mast is out for next year, then my interest in Milicic goes up quite a bit.

Theres only so many minutes to go around.   And I don’t see these guys coming to split a bunch of time.  But if Mast is out, it’s now a lot easier to rotate Kyle, Igor and Morgan.

If they got them all, Morgan would be on the outside for minutes. That is what happens on really good teams and I hope we are working to get there. Milicic >>> Morgan in my book and I like Morgan.

  18. 56 minutes ago, nustudent said:

Kyle is the one that I want most.  Meh on the rest.

Dang I love Milicic, a legit shooter who would thrive in our offense. I love Kyle because he is different than what we have but would be psyched for either and if we got both that would be incredible

I'm not sure how it's debatable. Professional teams aren't lining up to sign guys who need surgery and rehab and need to sit out a year. Other leagues don't have the deep pockets of the NBA.

100% this. He will not get anywhere near top dollar till he proves his knee. He will have top Drs and rehab free here. No brainer to stay unless he is just done with going to school
