Good article in the Lincoln Journal Star this morning by Brent Wagner on an interview he had with Kate. Sorry but I couldn't copy it for this post.
-
The WBB roster shown on Huskers.com has just been updated to include Kate Cain. I hope #31 has a great 4 years at Nebraska. She is listed as a center.
-
She is also an 80% free-throw shooter.

Just when we thought we may not be getting another post player for this fall our coach comes through with what appears to be a good one. It is becoming obvious to me that the players Coach Williams is looking for and has added to our team to date are not just good players but must be able to add to the all important team chemistry that she is working hard to improve as evidenced by her recent quote on Kate Cain where she said "She is an excellent student, has great character and fits perfectly with the humble, hard-working culture we are establishing at Nebraska." I think the key words are humble and hard-working. There will be a lot of competition for playing time especially when the four verbal commits for 2018 come in. We are and will continue to be a young team with lots of opportunities for players to take advantage of. I personally like where we are at and am looking forward to following our team in the future.

Huskers Add Top 100 Freshman Cain to Post Game Kate Cain will be immediately eligible as a freshman center for the Huskers in 2017-18. Photo Courtesy None Courtesy: NU Athletic Communications 06/23/2017 One of the top 100 players nationally in the 2017 high school senior class will join the Nebraska women's basketball program for the 2017-18 season, as Coach Amy Williams announced on Friday that 6-5 center Kate Cain will join the Husker program. Cain, who graduated from Pine Bush High School in New York, originally signed her National Letter of Intent with Delaware in November of 2016. Cain was released from her NLI after a coaching change at Delaware during the offseason. She chose Nebraska over Virginia, Minnesota and Dayton. She will have four years of eligibility at Nebraska beginning immediately in the 2017-18 season. As a senior, she was ranked as the No. 82 overall player in the nation by ESPN, which had her ranked as the No. 10 prep post player in the country. She originally chose Delaware over Syracuse, West Virginia and Seton Hall. Williams said Cain will provide immediate help for the Huskers in the post, while bringing her work ethic and high character to the team. "We're excited to have Kate join our program," Williams said. "She brings a strong back-to-the-basket post presence to our team and much-needed depth at that position. She's got great hands and a good presence around the rim. She is an excellent student, has great character and fits perfectly with the humble, hard-working culture we are establishing at Nebraska." Cain was a finalist for Miss New York Basketball honors as a senior, when she averaged 25.2 points, 12.3 rebounds and 7.9 blocks per game for Coach Bill Lacouara at Pine Bush High School. She was a first-team USA Today All-New York selection in 2016-17. She averaged 24.3 points, 15.0 rebounds and 8.0 blocks per game as a junior. Cain, who hails from Middletown, N.Y., played her club basketball for Coach John Reilly and the Hudson Valley Elite AAU program. She also helped Pine Bush to the New York state volleyball finals. Cain has a strong family background in basketball. Her father, Tim, graduated as the all-time leading scorer (1,872 points) in Manhattan College history. He was a two-time honorable-mention All-American by The Sporting News, averaging 17.3 points per game during his career for the Jaspers. Kate's mother, Alison (Martinsky) Cain, was also a 1,000-point career scorer as a collegian at Fairfield, finishing with 1,071 points. She also ranked 10th in Fairfield history with 734 career rebounds, while ranking second in Stags history with 268 blocks. Alison played professionally in Ireland. Kate's older brother, John, is a 6-10 starting left-handed pitcher for the Lafayette baseball team. She also has a younger brother, Chris. Nice to see coach Williams score in recruiting a Big from as far away as New York. I really like her defensive stat of 8 blocks per game as a junior and also a senior.
-
Yep. Feeling better all the time.
-
Thanks. I would think that would certainly help. I've got my fingers crossed. GBR
-
Does any one know if Kate Cain has ever visited NU and it's great facilities in person?
-
I just have to believe that if coach didn't think Rachel B. would be able to play this year she would have definitely added another post.
-
I'll stick with Sam. GBR

It's sad as I've noted numerous times that when you are trying to build a WBB fan base you neglect the base. I think I'll get ahold of our Athletic Director and ask him why we don't do more WBB interviews in very many of the venues available.
-
They lost their last 11 in a row to end last season. Maybe that's why they got a new coach.
-
I see where we finally updated our WBB roster found on Huskers .com for 2017/2018. I was getting tired of looking at the outdated one. Of the 11 players shown only two are listed as forwards with 2 more listed as guard/forwards. Should be interesting. Does anyone know if the coach will be on the sports nightly show tomorrow night? I'd like to call in with a couple of questions.
-
We can speculate all we want. Wouldn't it be nice if one of our sportswriters would ask our coach that question. I don't think that's too much to ask. We need to have more articles/interviews of the WBB program. It was the same way under coach Yori. Very little news. Disappointing.
-
I was of the same mindset. But maybe she likes what she has with Maddie and Grace at the 4 position. Obviously Rachel B. must be doing good in her rehab and hopefully Darrien W. is getting in shape. Also I'm sure the coach wants someone who will fit in and not just a warm body.
-
Makes her teammates better is a real key. I think of Nicea in the same way.
-
The future of our WBB program is in our Sophomore class this fall with at least four starters coming from that group. The best part of this is we will have that nucleus for 3 years. We need to find a stretch 4 that can shoot from the outside from Maddie, Grace or Taylor that can be the other starter. We then need to develop depth around this group and all stay healthy. We still have room for several more commits as we have 4 open scholarships for this fall and with the 3 commits so far for 2018 we have 4 open for 2018 as well.

I hope this will be my last blog on the subject of what happened with coach Yori. I'm sure some believe what happened was totally justified and others think it was totally wrong. The truth probably lies somewhere in between. It's over and done and we can't change anything that happened. We can always learn from the past and I'm sure many have. I have been a big fan in the past and will continue to be in the future. My biggest complaint is the poor coverage we get from the sports writers. As noted in the past NU WBB gets much less coverage then about any other sport we have.
-
I agree totally with your analysis. Thanks for posting and saving me the time to summarize what I believe a lot of people are over looking.
-
The only thing in the toilet are your comments!!!!!!!
-
Well I'll go on record and probably upset many of you following this forum. Due to the fact that I wasn't privy to all the information on coach Yori's firing I am still standing by our athletic director. Even though I was a big coach Yori fan for many years I believe he must of had justification for doing so. I do believe coach Williams inherited a mess and will need time to clean it up. All i'm looking at is reasonable progress each year.
-
I have to believe that we will still see an additional post come in that will be eligible for this upcoming season.
-
I believe that it will be very hard to keep Bria Stallworth out of the starting line up as the point guard. She seems to fit the bill as a true PG and her quickness will be invaluable there. Hannah seems to fit the 2 position as a shooting guard.
-
i think one of the early indicators on the recruiting acumen of the new staff will be how well J. Morton and B. Stallworth do.
