Jacob, thanks for coming on to join our discussion.  You seem a reasonable fellow.  I appreciate that.

I used to read the Bluejay Underground message board from time to time.  Primarily, I would check out their recruiting info because -- giving credit where it's due -- they would often be way ahead of the curve on what players were being offered, etc.  That's where I saw a reference to Nana who, at the time, was our latest commit.  And when I say your comment damned him with faint praise, what I mean by that is a compliment so understated that it almost comes across like an insult.  It's like if you were to give your girlfriend a 2 carat diamond engagement ring and she looks at it, shrugs her shoulders, and says "I guess it will do."  Or the way some critic once described Fred Astaire as someone "slightly bald and can dance a little."  I'm not going to go back and look for the exact quote, but that's basically what your comment about Akenten sounded like.  Yeah, he's an OK player, but limited ability and isn't going to fix much of what ails Nebraska's roster.

I don't have a problem with you saying that.  What I guess troubles me is that my entire experience of reading your writing prior to you taking a position with Hail Varsity was seeing your posts on a Creighton message board.  And for someone who is an acknowledged Creighton fan to write a critical reflection of Nebraska's basketball program for a Husker publication like Hail Varsity just comes off disingenuous.  It almost seems like you should preface any column about Nebraska basketball with the disclaimer that you're a life-long Creighton fan and are offering somewhat of an outsider's view.

Maybe if you threw in a little rah-rah from time to time, the critical comments would have more ... authenticity?

I'm honestly not trying to be an ass about this, I'm just making an observation that I'm sure other people have thought of but just not posted publicly.

    Best regards,
    Norm

    Check out @nbasfuture's Tweet:

I said this in another post somewhere I'm sure
but with quite a few of these type of athletes on the team now
I'm expecting a faster paced run and gun ally-oop type offense

This is a report of studies on optimism v. pessimism:

"Pessimism is trouble because it's bad for your health. Numerous studies have shown that optimists are physically and psychologically healthier than pessimists.  . . .  The researchers found that pessimists' health deteriorated far more rapidly as they age.  . . .  research conducted by the Mayo Clinic . . . found optimists have lower levels of cardiovascular disease and longer life-spans. . . .  researchers at Yale and the University of Colorado found that pessimism is associated with a weakened immune response to tumors and infection.
Researchers from the Universities of Kentucky and Louisville went so far as to inject optimists and pessimists with a virus to measure their immune response. The researchers found optimists had a significantly stronger immune response than pessimists.
Positivity and Performance:  Keeping a positive attitude isn't just good for your health. . . .  In one study [of insurance salespeople] . . . Optimistic salespeople sold 37% more policies than pessimists, who were twice as likely to leave the company during their first year of employment.

Persistent pessimism on message boards like this is something to be avoided!

Well, it's after the Final Four. It's after the Spring Game. Yet still no word from the AD's office.

43 days since we've played a game. And all we've "heard" from the AD is a tweet.

It's beyond time to lay out his vision for the program. What is the plan? I don't want to hear an ultimatum for 2017-18 - that almost never works out well for either party. But you can still articulate long term expectations for the program that don't have to include an ultimatum.

To me, at least part this sh!tst0rm of an offseason has come from the silence from above. Since we're more than a week into the signing period, it's probably too late, but if you have enough faith in Coach Miles to keep him for 2017-18, then say it publicly. It really isn't that difficult.

If he isn't your guy, then you should have fired him. Rip off the Band-Aid and start fresh. This wishy-washy lack of comments just results in doubt and confusion. And rumors. Tons and tons and tons of rumors.

Time for him to come out of his bunker and make an appearance. Even public company CEOs have to speak to the shareholders once a quarter. And there are a lot of public companies that don't operate organizations that make $125M+ per year, as NU is about to make.

The AD can't be a hermit. He/she has to be a leader, inspire confidence, etc. He/she doesn't have to be Stevie P and hold a press conference every time he/she has a successful bowel movement, but there's a happy medium there.

PS - And while he's making his rare media appearance, how about laying out his vision for NU's overall athletic program going forward? We're going to be seeing the full Big Ten share in less than 2 1/2 months. If there was ever a time to have a rock solid, long term plan in place, this would be it. How's about sharing at least an overview of it with the paying public?

Where is that money going? Hopefully a cut in ticket prices, even a small one, is on the table. Hopefully an idea of adding several more layers of bureaucracy in the AD's office is not.

With a $25M-$35M jump in the athletics budget on the horizon, that should push NU into the Top 15, if not the Top 10, of all athletic departments in funding.

Time to start acting like we belong there.

pmd9 reacted to HuskerND in Jacobson Gone?
Such a great and insightful post by Lady Husker. I fully understand message boards like this are fun for those of us on the outside looking in. I also know that I come to this board to try to get tid bits here and there but I take them with a grain of salt because much of it is water cooler talk rather than fact-based. But I show up and read the post anyway just to get a general sense of what people are thinking or saying. At the end of the day I support the Huskers and want them to succeed and I'm going to trust the coaching staff and administration to ultimately want the same thing.

That being said, I will also throw out this observation at the risk of getting crucified by others here. Let's take a hard look at the four who transferred.

Fuller:. Great locker room guy and helps the overall culture of any program he would be involved in. The question is, is he truly a big 10 talent.  I love what he brings to the culture of the team, but is he a kid that can really get a program over the hump in the best conference in the country?

Horne:. Tons of upside here. The question marks are this, he's an undersized 4 and not athletic enough to be a 3 in this league.  The Big 10 has becoming much more Athletic League. It is not the physical, power, win a game 52-48 that it used to be.

Morrow:. Love, love, love this athlete and talent. However, the question I have about Ed is this:. My father played football at Nebraska, my mother played basketball at Nebraska, I should go to Nebraska. He may love Nebraska, he may not. I wonder if he came to the Huskers more out of a sense of family obligation or if he truly believed Nebraska was the best home for him? The other question is, he's not a true back-to-the-basket 5, and he doesn't shoot it well enough to be a stretch 4.

Jacobson:. Culture guy, hard worker. Will be missed in the locker room for sure. However,  is he a difference-maker in the Big Ten, or is he simply a complimentary part? I would make the case that he is a complimentary piece and that this current roster has too many complimentary pieces. I do not believe Michael ends up in a power 5 conference, and at best, a different program allows him to play a stretch 4, MAYBE, but unlike White from last year, I do not believe he's going to go and be the leading scorer on his next team. He will be a nice addition for a smaller conference or a lesser program. Not a criticism, simply an observation.

So for me, it comes to this. The perception of these transfers may be worse than the basketball reality. If Palmer, Copeland, and Roby turn out to be the type of players that most believe they will be, the Huskers end up being more athletic, with more offensive Firepower, than they were this year. They may not be as deep,  but they certainly appear to be more athletic on paper.  I think it is too early to tell what the basketball impact of these decisions are. As Husker fans we need to wait and see how next year's lineup produces. Where these four players end up may tell us a lot about the level of their athleticism and basketball Talent.

I know it sort of defeats the purpose of a message board, and I'm not trying to call anyone out on anything -- so I hope no one posting takes this personally, because I don't mean it personally. I don't doubt that there are people posting here who do learn things that others may not be publicly privy to, and I don't doubt anyone would post something they knew to be untrue, just for the sake of posting it (as in, I assume they're posting something they heard from someone else, but in good faith that it's accurate). We're all here, presumably, because we love Nebraska Basketball.

But the rumor mill has been churning on overdrive around here the last couple weeks. So before we get too sold on any one narrative, whether that's one of Miles being an insufferable d-bag that players hate, or that Jacobson just wanted to shoot 3s, or that we're trading coaches with New Mexico, or any other stories yet to arise...I'm throwing out the suggestion that we take a second to realize that what we hear from the university probably won't match what we hear from "sources", and what "sources" have to say may or may not actually have any basis in reality (or may be hyperbole that has some roots in a fact somewhere, but just gets overblown as it passes from person to person). In other words, I'm just presenting the virtual salt shaker, and invite everyone to take a grain or handful.

My point is why hang onto miles when it's more than likely he wins less than 14 games than wins 15.....he's fired either way......meanwhile Dooley is available. Only reason I can think of that Eichorst hasn't canned him is that NANA is an NBA lottery pick and they didn't want to lose him....of course those odds are less than 1%. Greater odds are that Eichorst doesnt care about basketball winning

What lies ahead next year.....I'm a season ticket holder......this team probably will only win 12 games again. What are fans like yourself holding onto? It's likely Copeland misses all of the non con and since the B10 schedule will start in mid December, Copeland could miss 18 games. Think about that for a second. Joe Dooley was an assistant at kansas for 10 years! Has taken Florida Gulf coast to the NCAA tourney the last 2 years and has been successful there for 4 seasons AFTER replacing Andy Enfield who left for USC. Dooley plays the same up tempo style that Nee did. If Dooley was hired tomorrow, Jacobsen and morrow wouldn't be leaving. They are leaving because they feel miles will be fired after next season and they don't want to play for a new coach that's rebuilding as seniors.

Keeping Miles is essentially going to ruin this program. If your not giving him a contract extension than why are you keeping him? Tons of in state talent and Nebraska is such a mess they can't capitalize on it. Just pathetic what Shawn Eichorst is doing here. Mind boggling how he has handled this. Just ditch Miles and hire Dooley from Florida Gulf Coast. That's my vent........so pissed at this administrations incompetence regarding basketball

Just an opinion of an old guy who values commitment but I fully expect to be crucified by this but........   IF these guys are leaving because they "don't like Miles" or they don't like the playing situation and are throwing temper tantrums because they are not getting there way, or, or, or.....   I am firmly in the camp get the hell out and don't let the door hit them in the ass, or put a spike in the door and make sure it hits them.  Feels like a bunch of today's kids, just like the majority of college, hell even high school, athletes of today who feel it better be there way or it's the coaches/staff's fault and they have no part in the situation.  Today's kids are just plain spoiled and today's parents are solely to blame and yes, I do understand that I am saying the same thing Socrates stated how many millenniums ago.   JMHO.

Sad thing is... unless you are getting it your way and exactly what you want... you are unhappy and transfer.  KU, Duke, ect. have transfers as well, so winning doesn't just solve a transfer problem.

Not saying something on the inside might not be going on, but it isn't a Nebraska culture problem... it is a NATIONAL culture problem.  I do not care how pissed you are, I do not care how much you think you know more than the coach.  If you quit on the staff and the program... then you quit on yourself.  Have some damn pride!

I could give a damn right now about Miles.  The culture problem is a national issue that lies in these kids.  If we were winning and we had these transfers, it would be a different story, and as you see from multiple examples already this year... winning does not solve the transfer problem.

GATA, maybe it's a death march next year, but maybe the players rise to the occasion and win.

I think this is a roster that can do it.  Talking about youth last year wasn't an excuse; it was reality.  It won't be the reality next year.  Think about it.

We have a center with NBA potential; we have a 5-star PF who was 2-year starter at G'town before transferring here; we have a long kid who's an explosive athlete whose strengths are ball handling, driving and passing; we have a former top 100 recruit who started as a freshman at Miami who can light it up from deep; and we have a PG who will be a third-year starter.  We'll have Michael (hopefully) and Jack who aren't going to just sit there and let Isaac and Isaiah take their spots in the lineup.  And we'll have some decent guard depth, provided Anton Gill comes back from his injury.

I don't care what anybody says.  We were a good team last year, better than the final record -- a fact I think resulted from some untimely injuries and a grueling non-conference schedule.  I picked a win against Dayton when most people were saying we'd lose.  I picked a road win against Maryland prior to our win at Indiana.  We lost our mojo when Ed and Anton went down and we basically didn't get it back except for a last gasp against Purdue.  Too many disappointing, close losses to really good teams and then we got demoralized and laid an egg for the last 10 or so games of the season.

That doesn't have to happen next year.  We're not going to be playing quite the meat-grinder of a non-conference schedule.  I think we're going to hit the conference part of the schedule next year on a wave of positive momentum.

But the team and staff have to hold together between now and then for that to have a chance to happen.

pmd9 reacted to Norm Peterson in New Mexico a landing spot for Miles?
    Here's my take, FWIW.

Even w/o Ed Morrow, next year's roster is pretty good.  You have a 5-star PF coming in who will be eligible.  You have a guy in Jordy Tshimanga who many people are projecting as a break-out player in the league.  You have a top 100 shooting guard transfer who will be eligible.  You're going to have solid players in every position.  This looks like a competitive roster -- a group that could do some damage in the conference next year.

If too many players transfer, that obviously blows that scenario up, but if you fire the coach, you definitely blow that scenario up and you basically start over with a reclamation project for the next guy you bring in.

What's the harm to the program in waiting a year?

If the coach stays and the roster returns pretty much intact (other than the guys already announced as leaving, for reasons most of us can understand) you have a chance to do something special.  If the coach is fired, you blow up the roster and next year, you're just hoping to finish ahead of Rutgers in conference.

If things don't pan out as hoped, you can always make the change after next year.  What's the rush?

pmd9 reacted to Norm Peterson in Surprised nobody posted this yet: Jordy
I think their analysis is dead-on.

I think Jordy will be the best center we've had since Aleks Maric.  And, in the end, might be even better than Maric.

In my never-to-be-humble opinion, the combo of Jordy and Isaac (word is recovery from surgery is going well) represent a major upgrade from Ed and Mike.  No offense to Mike and Ed, but you've got size with Jordy and skill with Isaac that our starters this year really couldn't match.

I'm predicting Isaiah will elevate his game and become a full-time starter at the wing.  He'll have to be better than part-time starter Jack McVeigh, who I also think will be better than his sophomore self.  So, upgrade there.

Glynn will continue to improve.  We just need to find a replacement for Tai.  And maybe that guy will be James Palmer if his grades are OK; otherwise, maybe he is a juco player whom we've offered.  They might not be complete replacements for Tai, but they don't necessarily have to be, either.

I wish Ed had chosen to stay, but I think he would have been relegated to a back-up role, and that seems to be consistent with what the BTN guys are expecting also.

I am hoping the negative crap is now at an end.  I worry that we will lose Michael Lewis to Indiana.  I worry that once Ed left his other Illinois brothers could pack up and leave.  Heck who knows what may occur over the next several weeks.  Yet, that said, a bunch of good things could occur over the next month or so as well.  We could get positive news on Copeland.  We could learn that Palmer is good to go.  We could learn that a back up center is on the way.  We could find out that we have two new snipers coming in, one or both of whom will be a PG.

Yeah, I am p*ssed that Ed is leaving.  What am I going to do?  Should I give up my six season tickets for basketball...I've missed only one home game since 1984,  So that ain't happening.  I've put up with the peaks and valleys of this program longer than most "fans" have been alive.  Soooo, am I upset, am I disappointed, am I hurt, am I confused...yup.  But I move on.
