    Just curious, did his brother Trey get the same underwhelming defensive coaching?  Or was it just Bryce?  Did they separate Bryce and Trey when coaching defense?  I am really curious to know, since you seem to have this inside information.

    So you think if you look back at a ref for 2 seconds (not stare him down) and then run down the court and not say a word that warrants getting T'd up?  I've seen players as well as coaches act way worse and not get T'd up.  Sorry, I totally disagree with you.  That is just a bad ref who missed the call trying to show up a player.

    This is the big caveat when it comes to recruiting. It takes a critical eye to discern what will translate to the next level and what won't. As an example, I was very excited for John Christofilis to step on the court this season, his YouTube videos showed off his shooting skill. Spot up, pull up, off of screens, he looked like the total package. But he never made it onto the court except garbage/desperation time and hasn't shot the ball well in practice. My assumption is that he needs time and physical development to apply that shooting skill to higher level basketball.

    Physically gifted players are more likely to make an impact right away. Guys who can jump out of the gym, or are taller than their position. Level of competition is important too. Ryan Nembhard went up against a lot of talented players at Monteverde.

    Let me get something else off my chest.

    I'm going into next season behind this team and behind this coach. I will bring the best I have as a fan to the arena every game and cheer for them as hard as I can, which is what I've always done. I've upheld my end of the bargain.

    But to people like Robin Washut and Chris Basnett and the people who write for local sports media and talk on local sports radio, do me a favor, please.

    When we're heading into next season, I don't want to hear any interviews with any players talking about how the level of buy-in is so much better than it was a year ago. How the guys get along better than last year. How you can just see that the level of talent has improved.

    That talk is so cheap.

    I don't want to hear it. I don't want to hear any of it.

    Remember how we used to laugh and laugh at Iowa when they extended (undeservedly, we all thought at the time) Kirk Ferentz' and Fran McCaffery's contracts?  And now we are all jealous of them and their program's stability and relative success (especially in relation to ours)?

    Maybe this is the move we don't want to make but maybe it's the move we need to make.  IDK.

    And while I might not agree with it, Fred Hoiberg is the coach of the basketball team I cheer for and I am going to pull for this team to succeed as fervently as I have for any 4th year coach in the history of the program. I want this to succeed. At this point, Fred is my coach and I'm going to be behind him until we see what things look like next season. And I will hope that I can continue to be behind him even then. I hope he succeeds. I really, really do.

    Going back to the OP.  I still think Fred is the man for the job and I am encouraged by the progress in recruiting I see going forward, especially next year's class.

    There may not be many of us, but for those of us who still believe Fred is the best chance to get this done at NU, I encourage you all to email Trev and let him know.  No doubt, all the cynics and haters are going to be blasting their disdain of Fred to Trev non-stop.  One poster already shared his experience of emailing Trev all his grievances.

    We need to make sure the haters aren't the only voices heard.  Trev needs to hear from long-time fans like us that we see things differently.  That there are other considerations that show a more positive outlook.  That we support Fred and we will continue to go to the games because we believe he has as good or better of chance of turning this around than any new coach.

    I am terribly disappointed in this year's season like everyone else.  I attended the exhibition game with Colorado and had my expectations for the season go sky-high.  Again, I am so disappointed in our lack of team play.  We did not solve our problems with 'point guard play' and we did not solve our 'lack of rebounding' problems.

    However, I am a die-hard Nebraska basketball fan and I REFUSE to give up.  All of you on this board that have given up, I understand.  But please do not respond to his thread with hate, despair, anger, hopelessness, etc.  I know everything you are going to say.  I have been to all the games.  I've already heard it.  Please go to another thread if all you want is to 'bad mouth' me for trying to see some positives that we can build on.  I want to see if there are any other 'hopeful' fans left that want to talk about our future in a positive way.  (It is a 300 mile round trip for me to see games -- please don't question my loyalty -- my mental competence maybe -- but not my loyalty.)

    So, on the positive side -- I see our rebounding problems starting to improve.  We will have better size with Eduardo Andre (6'10" sophomore), Blaise Keita (6'10" soph), and Oleg Kojenets (7'0" redshirt freshman) than we did this year.  We also have Wilhelm Breidenbach (6'10" sophomore) that can play post or power forward.

    I like the recruiting class that we are bringing in -- one juco and three freshmen)
         Blaise Keita --  6'10" and 240 lbs. -- top juco post -- 4-Star rating  (Sophomore in eligibility)
         Denim Dawson  --  6'6" forward -- rated #185 in his class
         Jamarques Lawrence  --  6'3" guard -- rated #146 in his class
         Ramel Lloyd  --  6'5" guard -- rated #135 in his class

    I believe that you build a team by recruiting strong freshmen classes and have them develop over 4 years.  This season, we had seven freshmen players on the roster (Eduardo Andre, Keon Edwards, and C.J. Wilcher were considered freshmen in eligibility due to covid).  The true freshmen were Breidenbach, Byrce McGowen, Kojenets, and Quaran McPherson (6'3" redshirt guard).  If Byrce McGowen leaves after his freshman year, we will have six sophomores and three freshmen on the roster next season.  That is a good nucleus to develop and build on.

    I don't know if Keisei Tominaga, Lat Mayan, Trey McGowen, and Derrick Walker will return.  I would like to see Bryce McGowen return for one more year but I doubt that will happen.  If all players came back, we would be one over the scholarship limit at 14.  Some will have to leave because WE MUST RECRUIT A POINT GUARD for next season and maybe one more perimeter shooter.  (portal -- be good to us)

    So, starting next season, we will be playing a lot of young players that have a chance to develop and be competitive in the BIG 10.  I like the size and depth of our post players (when was the last time we ever said that).  I like C.J. Wilcher -- I thought he improved and gained confidence these last five or six games.  I like Keon Edwards -- I expect him to be one of our better players when he is a junior and senior (I know, he hasn't shown much yet, but I believe that he has a great amount of potential.  He didn't play his senior year in high school due to covid and it shows.  He didn't have the confidence to assert himself on the court this year and seemed to defer to the older players.  I think he has as much talent as anyone on the team and will show it with time.)

    I plan to purchase my tickets again next year and drive 300 miles to watch them play.  I want to stay positive about Husker basketball.  I want to be hopeful.  I want these 9 sophomores and freshmen to be the building blocks for long successful runs to the NCAA tournament.  Am I all alone out here or are there a few other 'die-hards' that have hope for the future??  Go Big Red!!

    My vote: another year.
    Here's why:
       1.  Bryce McGowens is developing well toward the NBA draft, according to NBA experts (Hunter Sallis should be so lucky);
       2.  Team progress between Rutgers 1 and Rutgers 2 is obvious;
       3.  One part of that progress is the return of Trey McGowens;
       4.  Rutgers 2 happened without our second leading scorer--and # 3 scorer is a long ways behind (here's hoping/expecting Verge's return will be a net positive for the team);
       5.  Quality recruits are committed for next year;
       6.  Hoiberg and staff are good people with a history of success at Iowa St.;
       7.  The secret extension in mid-January (a month after Michigan and Auburn debacles) speaks volumes;
       8.  Etc.

    pmd9 reacted to NUdiehard in Shut Up Sipple! - Why Fred Should have at least 5 years
    Those who listen to Sipple on the radio will understand that even though I disagree with Sipple (and most on this board apparently) my title is made in good fun. I reference Sipple because he has been critical of Fred and many believe Sipple is the mouthpiece of the AD.  I hope that is not the case this time, but if it is, then I disagree with Trev and most of this board regarding what should be Hoiberg's future status with this program.  Fred took over this moribund program and should have at least 5 years to try and turn it around.  Period.

    Have the past 3 years been pathetic.  Absolutely.  Has this season been almost unbearable/unwatchable  Yes.  Is it 100% guaranteed next year and the year after will be significantly improved?  No.  But Fred has proven himself.  He has won big time in a big time conference.  Something no other coach in Nebraska history has done.  So he deserves the chance to prove he can do it here as well, and that means he must have at least 5 years.  The reason I say 5 years is because it is only in the 5th year of a coaches career that the coach has all his players including 4 and 5 year seniors on the roster.  I would say the same for most any coach, and definitely for a proven commodity like Hoiberg.

    It is clear this board and most fans have completely soured on Fred.  For those who have been on this board for many, many years, you will know that I can be quite critical of coaches and I made it clear when I thought Collier should go and when Doc should go, and I was sometimes in the minority in those positions because many wanted to retain them longer and see if they could turn it around.  I was ambivalent about Miles.  I did not think Miles would ever get it done here, but this program is so pathetic I questioned whether Moos could get anyone better so I was ambivalent (although leaning towards firing him and taking a shot with someone else).  Had I known they could get Fred as a replacement it would have not been a question at all.

    I believe the fundamental difference between my thinking most on this board is that I think the main issue facing the Huskers is talent.  More correctly, it is experience (in the Husker program) and talent, as opposed to coaching.  Are there coaching issues I take umbrage with?  Yes, and I have voiced some on this board.  But the MUCH, MUCH bigger issue is experienced talent.  And if talent is the issue, then I believe in Fred more than any other two-bit mid-major coach we might hire to bring in that talent over the next few years.  In fact, I think we are already seeing that with the recruits coming in next year.  Look at who Fred beat out to land Ramel Lloyd-Neither Collier, nor Doc nor Miles ever beat out a who's who for a high school recruit like that.  This doesn't even count McGowens (which I know is another issue, but I will address later).  Tack on Keita (who appears to be a legit big man), and the others, and it is a very solid class (I believe ranked in the top 25).  Will they all pan out?  Probably not.  Will it actually be a top 25 class in talent on the court?  I don't know.  But it has as much chance as any IMO.

    As for Bryce, I know Norm is so fed up he says he never wants any more 5 stars and just wants gutsy, hard working 3 stars who stay in the program and develop.  Fine.  Isn't that exactly what Fred it doing?  How many 5 stars has he recruited in his 3 years here?  Oh ya, just one.  Unless I am mistaken, the Husker roster currently has SEVEN freshman (all 3 or 4 star players) on the roster.  This includes Dawson, (who is already on campus) but does not include the other 3 players in next years class (2 will be freshman and one will be a sophomore).  One silver lining is Wilhelm should get a medical redshirt this year and he is a perfect type of 5 year player who can develop into an impact player but is not good enough to go pro early.   If everyone stays (and yes, I know that will not happen). next year's roster could have 6 freshman (Wilhelm, McPherson, Dawson, Lloyd, Lawrence and Oleg) and potentially 4 sophomores (Andre, Wilhelm, Edwards and Keita).  Some may not return, but there spots may be filled with more freshman or sophomores.

    Based on how things are going, it is possible (admittedly not likely) that Bryce and /orTrey return.   Has Bryce been perfect this year?  Clearly not.  Does he need to get bigger, tougher and more focused on defense?  Absolutely?  Would it be good to get another year of development from him?  I certainly think so.  But even if he doesn't return, as shown above, Fred has a lot of youth on this roster.

    Andre has his warts.  He is very raw and makes mistakes.  But he didn't start playing basketball until he was 15 years old.  And because of the Covid year, he is still just a freshman.  He is the perfect type of 5 year development big man along with Wilhelm, and then throw in Keita as just a sophomore next year.  Wilcher is athletically limited, but he can be a very good 3 point shooter which his important in today's game.  Again, another development guy.

    Now, on the pressing question.  Why do I think most of this year's issues are players/talent and not coaching.  Well, first, it just is apparent to me every game that we are outclassed in size and athleticism.  Would anyone argue with that?   The other deficiencies are toughness, focus and discipline.  Now, you say these are all coaching issues right?  Well, maybe.  But let's dig deeper.  I argue that toughness and grit/dog are as much a skill that some have more difficulty learning than others.  For instance, Wilhelm played with grit and hustle every second he was on the floor.  Yet he was just a freshman.  Then there are guys like Bryce who don't even think about diving on the floor or getting physical on defense.  Both freshman, both in the program the same amount of time, but different outcomes (and I have even made the comparison of Bryce to his own brother who plays with grit by nature).  Same nurture, different nature.  Not all humans have that "dog" in them, and sometimes all the coaching in the world has trouble bringing this out.  Another example--Fred said that Dawson in just his first few days of practice dove on the floor more than other players all year.  Fred was obviously applauding this effort, so clearly he encourages it in his players.  But here we have a true freshman who didn't need any coaching, he just does it because it is his nature.  We heard similar things about McPherson.  And I'm guessing Keita has plenty of "dog" in him.

    Last year Nebraska had a top 40 defense when adjusted for tempo.  This year's defense is horrendous.  Is Fred different?  Or have the players changed (including the loss of Trey who is the by far the best defender on the team).  To use this year as justification for an argument that Fred can never have a good defense is ludicrous when he did just last year.

    The Big Ten has been absolutely brutal from top to bottom for each year Fred has been here.  Is it the reality he must overcome?  Absolutely.  But is it fair to compare Fred's record to Doc's when he coached in the Big 12?  Or even each of Miles seasons.  Please show me a season in Doc's, Collier's or MIles career where every other team in the conference was ranked in top 100-EVERY SINGLE ONE.  Those coaches always had a couple teams that were terrible to clip a few easy wins.

    I posted on this board in February of last year that I did not think Nebraska would be good this year because Fred did not have sufficient talent to win this year.  Many argued with this, but it was apparent to me.  Not a coaching issue.  A talent issue.  Now, I did acknowledge that guys like Andre and Wilhelm and Keisei could maybe develop into solid players, but not THIS YEAR.  Fred later added a few more recruits like Wilcher and Verge, but once again Wilcher is a freshman (who needs more development) and Verge is, well, Verge.  I also posted last February that because of this, Fred needed to evaluate his staff and not be so reliant on Matt A.  Again, I took crap for this at the time, but it seemed pretty apparent at the time.

    Regarding Matt A., he is taking a lot of crap on this board lately.  Some justified.  But some are saying he must go.  Not sure I understand.  Can he be, should he be, the sole recruiter?  Absolutely not (again, I said this last February).  But this doesn't mean he has to be fired.  First, Fred has to be more involved in evaluating, recruiting, etc.  And then I believe he needs to get one or two more recruiting assistants to compliment Matt A, not necessarily replace Matt A.  With that said, this assumes there are not other issues that justify firing Matt A.  If he has blatantly gone out of bounds on other issues, then that is a different matter, I am just addressing the recruiting issue.

    I'm guessing those who pull out the "NBA" quotes/issues probably never watch the NBA.  Those who follow the NBA closely know that there are soooo many issues beyond coaching.  Roster issues, team construction, rebuilding, etc. far outweigh coaching acument.  Heck, many NBA coaches today are instructed to lose so they get good draft picks.  And quoting Jimmy Butler, please?  That guy was a malcontent on Minnesota and Sixers and pretty much every team he has been on except maybe the Heat.

    Last, if you fire Fred, who are you going to get?  Please spare me the latest hot and up-and-coming coach.  Whoever that is, he ain't coming here.  It was a miracle we got Fred.  Fire him after 3 or 4 years and the already small pool shrinks even further.

    So shut up Sipple!  You have been kissing Frost's *ss for 4 years now.  Give Fred time.  Give him his 5 years and let's see where we are then.

    A bit surprised with all the negativity.  The team that walked out against Western Illinois would have got rolled badly in this game.  We should have won this game.  Far and away the best game we have played this year.  Not perfect by any means, but there were times the ball movement was excellent.  Problem was guys like Wilcher were cold and missing their open looks.  I thought the decision making on when to attack vs pass, especially by Verge, was much better.  Not a lot of hero ball; Fred wanted to see players make the easy play and I thought this was the best all season we have done that.  Finally looked a bit like Hoiberg ball out there.

    I had no hope going into Big Ten play before this game.  If we play like this, or heaven forbid keep improving, we are going to be proud of this team.  We were a dumpster fire our first 5 games.  We are making big progress.  It was a great effort tonight and I was proud of the fight, even if we came up a hair short.

    Why? Let’s just look at the point in the game where lat lost his shit and got ejected.

    played the rest of Regulation and I believe all of the first OT without subbing. Played just breidenbach as a sub for the 2nd and 3rd OT. No Webster till the 4th OT where he hits several shots.

    played wilcher for the rest of regulation and what seemed like all 3 of those OT periods when his shot was obviously off( if you want shooting try lakes, if you want defense try Edwards )

    let seabron take it to Bryce over and over again on the defensive end which was a clear miss match in regulation and the first couple overtime’s without trying anyone else on him.  Again try Edwards who’s 6’7 and seems fairly athletic on him or wilcher held his own vs him A few times even.  But it’s just shit coaching to expect Bryce to handle a majority of the load on offense and then to also try to stop seabron every position on defense.

    The fact the we don’t play Andre half the game just makes zero sense too. Something must be up behind closed doors. It should be like a 22/18 minute split between him and walker at the 5 because like always we are gonna get our shit rocked in the Big Ten with just walker at center and Andre is likely to transfer without meaningful playing time IMO.

    we are in year three and yes talent level is better than it’s been in quite some time but that doesn’t matter if the coaching isn’t better than it’s been in quite some time.

He also lost to Incarnate Word with a team that went to the NCAA tournament the year prior and was nationally ranked preseason. Then lost to Samford the year after that. He also lost to Kent State and UTEP. And had countless barn burners against low to mid-major teams. I wasn’t confidant going into any non-conference game during Miles’ tenure until his very last team (which on paper had just as much talent as this year’s team according to the recruiting rankings you referred to earlier).
