What is Fred thinking? I would imagine something like this: 
 
When you have a close-knit group that accomplishes things that haven't been done here in a long time, it hurts personally to lose guys from that team, especially when they're choosing to leave with the option to come back. However, Ramel/Blaise/Matar literally lose us nothing on paper. They can all effectively be replaced by literally adding any 3 transfers with similar body types. Eli wants to play more minutes right now and had potential but was too slow and would not have been a starter here next year. CJ maxed out here and was also too slow and would not have been a starter here next year. Jamarques is the only one that frustrates me (Fred) but I understand because he wants to be a starter as a junior and I was probably honest with him that that is not guaranteed here because we believe Ulis (or another transfer) is our starting PG and Brice and Juwan are not coming off the bench.
 
Fred had individual meetings with every single player. If anything, these departures should tell you that Mast/Williams/Gary are back because all these guys clearly did not see a path for them to get the minutes they want (or think they deserve) this year. It also tells me Ulis might be better than people think. 
 

Alabama is the future model.  
 
You’re gonna have to be a freak player to suit up for Fred as an underclassman moving forward, and if you are a bench player as a fr/so, you better develop and bust your ass because they’ll happily pay a better upperclassman transfer over you who already averaged 18ppg somewhere else.  
 
This is simply the coaches playing the same game the players have asked to play.  For programs on the up, NIL is a quick conduit to roster overhaul.  I don’t blame the kids or the coaches one bit.  This is just the way it goes now. 
 
We’ll have a scary 7-8 man rotation next year.  Probably the most talented team we’ve ever had coming off an NCAA tourney, great attendance, a fantastic coaching staff, and $$$.  That’s my bet anyway.  

For at least an hour or two (hopefully!), I think we still have enough on the roster to field a starting five next year.

Yikes. Why do you say the Houston players are thugs in sneakers? Shead is by all accounts one of the good guys in college basketball. Great player too. They have a tough, blue collar culture in place there. Duke typically has at least a few players who behave like entitled, whiny little brats on the court.

The mid major as new juco is very real.  There isn’t a huge adjustment to be made if you were the man on a mm team and move to p5.  
 
1. You’ve already played a ton of p5 schools, probably held your own, and now have a chip on your shoulder/confidence.  
 
2.  You’ve developed way more skills on the court as you were getting tons of minutes at D1 speed as opposed to spot minutes at the P5.  
 
3.  There’s a lot of good fundamentals taught at the mm level because they have to in order to stay competitive.  More team guys.  So when Bama imports them, they have culture and humility when they arrive.  
 
JUCOs have easily suffered the most from transfers/NIL.  
 
Lastly, we can complain all we want about the way things are now, but this system benefits Nebraska so much it’s hard to fathom.  I don’t want anything to change.  We can get dudes here now.  

I guess I'm in the minority here because I think this is fun. Would have been nearly impossible to dramatically improve the roster pre portal days.

I mean who am I to cast stones? I still drink a few beers occasionally and eat more than my fair share of edibles. Sign him up! 

With all due respect to today's players, Claude Retherford might have been the rizziest dude to ever put on a Nebraska Basketball uniform.  Once quoted as saying his idea of a team was four guys who would set screens so he could shoot.
 
If there is someone on that film taking all the shots for Nebraska, especially shooting from the hip, it's Claude.

The conversation over in recruiting about which guard spot Janowski is going to slot into helped me solidify how I feel about the portal this year. I thought I wanted someone who can get to the line, and someone who can defend at the basket.
 
Now, I’m just hoping we are able to get guys we need to fill all the roles on the team, whether they’re the highest rated or not. If Fred and company see them fitting in a role, I want them. Come the first game, I don’t want our starting lineup to have anyone playing out of position because we NEED them to.
 
Last off season we were really one, maybe one and a half deep, at the point guard spot. That one player was ruled ineligible around August (?) and we didn’t have a solid backup plan, and had Lawrence as our starting PG. He did as well as could be expected given the situation. But I don’t want him, or anyone else, in that situation this year.

There will always be injuries, suspensions, and in the NIL age players could bolt at anytime. I hope through the portal this year, we’re able to build a roster that is robust to the inevitable player getting hurt, suspended, leaving etc. I think about how much it felt like our NCAA chances were gone when we thought Gary tore his Achilles. I don’t want a single incident like that feeling like we can’t overcome it.
 
Kudos to the coaches for milking 40 minutes of PG play out of a few different players and still getting us to the dance. Let’s go build a roster now that can just work on getting better together, instead of having to learn how to play new positions.

The difference in PG and SG three point shooting is that the PG often has to create their shot using the dribble and on-ball screens, vs catch and shoot and off-ball screens. A good shooter at one spot isn’t necessarily going to be good at the other.

I haven’t watched enough of his film to know which he excels at, or if he excels at both. If he is much better at one than the other, I hope we don’t try to steer too hard to the other to fill a roster need. We’ve seen that have mixed results with Brice and JLaw this past year.
 
But I am right there with you, hoping he’s capable and takes the PG spot.

I don’t know man. The coaches voted him second team all-league. Led the team in assists and steals and he was their only guard who could get into the lane consistently and create. Nebraska has already reached out to him.  

But a huge gain for the Bates Motel!!

The addendum is that we don't finish in the top four unless we're predicted to be in bottom four, and when we're (rarely) predicted anywhere but the bottom four, we finish in the bottom four.
