    OT: Live Sports Are Back!

Union Omaha gets its first goal and first ever win for the history books. And against the reigning champion of 2019. FWIW, Union Omaha is in League One (below USL Championship and MLS in the US soccer league system).

    Think Yvan as slimmed

Yvan was one of the brightest spots on the 2019-20 squad, particularly at only 17 years of age. He seems to be improving his physique to become a legit B1G dude, and I couldn't be more excited to see how much he brings to the table for the upcoming season. With several other taller players on the team in 2020-21, it could provide the ability to mix-and-match much better based on opponents' personnel as opposed to sticking Yvan on the "tall guy"!

The Iowa staff is proving themselves. They discovered Gustafson in a tiny Wisconsin town and developed her. They seem to develop their team and compete hard with less than stellar talent ( according to recruiting analysts). I think our platoon system steers top talent away.

yes, jmo but, think this is a crucial season for this staff. as long as it takes place. i think they will have to finish at least .500 if not better. i'm so sick of this "mask" crap.

    Assuming they play ...

    1. Even though the roster was turned over again the guys that were added this year were more handpicked as opposed to a last-minute fire sale type situation last spring. You have multiple guys that redshirted together so there will be more cohesion. You also have multiple guys coming in with plenty of division one power five level experience. Those things weren’t evident last year. On top of that you have a much more complete and well rounded roster. you’re longer, you’re taller, you’re more skilled, you’re more experienced. 2. How much better is up in the air. I think a lot of that depends on what type of season you have. Obviously with the virus that puts the non-con schedule in jeopardy. We need that to build cohesiveness amongst the new players. Jumping right in to conference play is not a good thing for a brand new team even if it is significantly more talented. With that being said assuming a full schedule is played, I fully expect an NIT type team. I’m not gonna come out and say we’re gonna win 25 games and go to the NCAA tournament. But I do think we will be significantly better. That means 2 to 3 more wins in the nonconference as well as the fact we will have more confidence heading into the difficult parts off conference play,to the extent that we won’t give up and quit when things start trending the wrong direction. That is assuming of course that Mcgowans is eligible. 3. As far as filling a Hoiberg roster I think we’re seeing it. You’re seeing a mix of high school, transfers and jucos. I think inevitably high school players will become more prevailant, but in the meantime while he’s building his roster transfers will have a heavier impact early on to achieve success and build a culture. 4. The biggest question I have Right now is our ability to shoot from the outside consistently. I think we will be significantly better in the paint through experience and added bodies. I think we have natural scores in Benton and Allen. But I don’t see a pure shooter from the outside yet. I think we have good shooters and guys who can make shots but not sure we have a pure shooter on the roster currently. Or at least one that is eligible.

It is clear McCabe does not feel NE is currently winning enough. Also sometimes you just do not click with a staff. Whichever it is Amy and her staff need to gets things turned around. I hope they can do it. Iowa has had some good luck lately. Hopefully it's time for that to change.

    Assuming they play ...

Thanks for the reply, @basketballjones. The direction of the question about how you'd fill out a roster was intended to be sort of a "what do you think his recipe is?" kind of question. In the old days, a basketball roster might be constructed in such a way that you ideally had a couple of back-to-the-basket centers, including a talented youngster you were developing, and then you might have 2-3 PFs, one or more of whom could swing to the 5 in a pinch. Then, you'd have a couple of small forwards, 2-3 shooting guards, and a few guys who would be your classical point. In this era of "positionless" basketball, however, rosters are described more in terms of what a player does: rim-runners, stretch 4s, wings, etc. And, in the Hoiberg "recipe," you probably have to factor in at least 2 sit-out transfers per year. It used to be easy to look at our roster and say, well, we need another big man with our last scholarship, or we need a backup point. With this new staff, I find myself questioning exactly what it seems he wants in order to field the type of team he envisions. So, what does that ideal Hoiberg roster look like, and is there anything this current iteration is missing in order to check all of Fred's boxes? Does that make those two questions more clear?

Valladolid plays in the second tier of Spanish professional basketball. Looks like they were in 1st (and in line for promotion to the first division) when the season was halted last year due to covid so apparently they're still in the second division now. Congratulations to Matej, and best of luck!

To start off this there is no rule against it. When Grant Gibbs got his extra year of eligibility, Greg McDermott paid for Doug to go to school. Given how much Gibbs brought to the team and how much their winning effects his future contract, it was almost like an investment in himself. Most any of us would have done the same thing in the same situation. More power to him. Thus it's more about how motivated you would be to pay for your kid to go to school. Dwayne Wade has all the money in the world. He can afford to send Zaire to Marquette or any school with the same amount of financial inconvenience many here might experience buying a sandwich. Paying for his kid to play at Marquette isn't going to guarantee meaningful playing time. If his son earns a scholarship there, darn right he should get it. Now, they're full on schollies and they need one more for a situation that will benefit the team he's invested in and his son attends? Sure.

    The Official Media Thread

Caught the DP & Stephens show on 93.7 today - Jaron Boone was a guest around 1 pm. Kind of a surreal conversation - certainly wasn't what I expected to hear from Jaron. Paraphrasing - He loved his time at NU, wouldn't have changed a thing, being elected to the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame would be one of the greatest honors of his life, Danny was tough on the guys but Jaron didn't feel Danny was too hard on him, he personally had nothing to do with the decision on the boycott as he was just going with the flow. etc. It was a 180 degree opposite of what I expected him to say on pretty much everything. I was around the team a bit in my job at that time, and my impression was Jaron was the center of the storm more often than not, that he was extremely unhappy here, didn't get along with Danny, etc. But based on his comments today, he clearly didn't remember it that way. Maybe it just seemed like he was the problem to outsiders, or maybe a few decades of time have given him a different perspective / memory of what was going on in those days. Says he still keeps in touch with quite a few players from those days. I believe they had his dad on last week & DP knew the Boones from his time in Utah, so this wasn't something where Jaron reached out to them; they reached out to him. In other words, he wasn't angling for being elected to the hall of fame. It was just one question out of the interview. Podcast is on this page - https://theticketfm.com/category/dp-and-stephens/ Someone smarter than me probably can embed it. It's worth listening to for anyone still haunted by how poorly those 95 & 96 teams played in relation to the talent on the team. Have to admit, I forgot Jaron is on NU's Top 10 all-time scoring list. A couple more NU hoops interviews are scheduled on the show this week - Tony Farmer Tuesday I believe & Strick maybe on Friday. Those should be great too.

yep.....done deal. didn't bother copying. it's on twitter. from LSJ: "I definitely wanted to go play for a program that likes to win and is super competitive and has fun while doing it, and they definitely do that," McCabe said. imo, i think the "super competitive" phrase is most likely the biggest obstacle facing the huskers at this time. guess the Megan Gustafson era has really launched things at iowa. always had a pretty good history, but...some really good recruits coming in.
