2022 PG Cale Jacobsen -> Nebraska
royalfan and 3 others reacted to millerhusker for a topic
I'm excited to have an in-state player who had Division I offers decide to walk-on at Nebraska. Cale is closer to 6'2" than 6'4". He's shorter than Kwat Abdelkarim, who was listed at 6'3". Watched him play for the Nebraska Supreme team and he really struggled against length. Lots of turnovers. It will definitely take him time to get used to the length and athleticism in college. He appears to have decent straight line speed and vertical athleticism, but really lacks any lateral quickness. A slow-twitch athlete. He does have good size and legit Big Ten strength for a point guard. Seems like people will disagree with this, but his lack of motor was the biggest thing I noticed. If we're comparing him to Charlie Easley, Charlie obviously isn't going to dunk on anyone but he is a quick-twitch athlete with real lateral quickness and has always had a constant motor. All of which allowed him to get significant playing time at Nebraska. Cale is much stronger than Charlie, and I believe has a better feel for creating for others. Charlie was an elite three point shooter in high school, which didn't translate to the Big Ten level. But he is again a great three point shooter in the Summit League. Cale shot 30% from three as a senior in high school. Has a pretty nice stroke but a slow release that won't translate to a higher level. Cale shot above 60% from the field due to his size, strength and competition level. With Cale, I see a very good NAIA or Division III player. Just my honest assessment of him at this time. FWIW, I didn't think Sam Griesel would ever be a Power 5 player coming out of high school. He is going to prove me wrong this year. I'm glad to have them both on the roster.4 points -
The good news is the theory that the order is not alphabetical and we are listed first. The bad news is the next time that theory works in our favor will seemingly be the first.3 points

Instead: Judging by actuarial tables and family history, I have between 10 minutes and 45 years left on this mortal coil At our current rate of success, Nebraska can be expected to make between 0 and 2 NCAA tournaments in that time frame At our historical rate of NCAA Tournament success, Nebraska can be expected to win 0 NCAA tournament games in that time2 points -

Excellent point. Scholarships are year-to-year but the Big Ten expects you to honor it as long as the player wishes to stay. BUT take away his NIL money -- which the league cannot control -- and you effectively incentivize him to move on. That's a really good point. Very Machiavellian of you. I anticipate the coaches will use that strategy with cutthroat efficiency.2 points -

One thing I just thought in terms of NIL, it will be used, if it isn’t already, to get guys off your team as well as on your team. Need a scholarship? Make another player’s NIL money go away.2 points -

I put this under its own title; but Matt can move it under our huskers in the pro's thread if he wishes. This is interesting on a few issues: * He still doesn't know his ceiling * He still loves his huskers * His current major weakness * His strength as a 3-point shooter * What didn't factor into his decision to become a husker * The dilemma in deciding on retaining him or letting him go Man, it would have been sweet having him that first year under Fred...but I wonder now if that would have helped or hurt his pro career path? Enjoy the article. https://thunderousintentions.com/2022/05/10/isaiah-roby-doesnt-know-ceiling/amp/1 point -
That is terrible indeed. Thanks for posting @49r so we can pay our respects.1 point

I've been thinking about this one all day. Adreian seemed like one of the really good ones, both on and off the court. Definitely among the upper echelon of opponents that I most respected. This one stings.1 point

Year 4
Handy Johnson reacted to busticket for a topic
Looking at our roster I can see this season going one of two ways. 1. We play uptempo as we have been and we get killed. We don’t have the offensive players to play that style. 2. We change are identity to a grinding, hard nosed defensive team that makes the high IQ basketball plays that lead to good shots, easy buckets and limited turnovers. With SG at PG, I think this could work. It would really help if Breidenbach gets his 3 point shot down… last year he looked very uncomfortable shooting from outside but supposedly he has it in him. We need another player to step up outside of Wilcher to be reliable from 3 or other teams will pack it in. It will be interesting to see how Fred coaches this group. Or maybe some guys like Dawson and McPherson will surprise and be much better offensively than I am expecting.1 point -

I am scratching my head trying to figure out the math of whoever wrote this article. "Roby shoots 36-percent from three..." "...ranking in the 93rd percentile for his position on corner threes (50-percent), and 95th percentile on non-corner triples (45-percent), and 98th percentile overall for his position on all three-pointers (46-percent)."1 point -

Here's the problem.... I DON'T see him playing next year. But, that shows an unwillingness to accept the realities of NCAA D1 basketball, on my end. Those of you who are, or have been, advocating for these kids to go the Griesel route are probably correct. Play right away and get that gratification/experience if you're good enough - then pick your spot with a P5 conference team when the time comes. When I'm making my argument for these in-state kids, I understand I have a pretty serious flaw in my argument - and that's the fact that pretty much all of these kids want to play right away and want instant gratification. No one wants to stay around until their Junior year and finally start playing anymore. Understandable. Only get one life and one shot at this, might as well be somewhere you can actually play.1 point -

I hope that you and @basketballjones are right, particularly because I see a gaping hole at the PG position for us. I still think a couple years of major playing time at a Summit League school would be better for his development, but will be happy to eat crow if he makes the rotation for us this year.1 point -
Really hoping for that Union Omaha v SKC matchup in the round of 16!1 point

I can't wait for Baylor to turn down the invite, opening a spot for Trey, who then earns a great G-League contract. That would be elite Nebrasketball karma.1 point -

I can see him playing next year. A lot of his competition is young and unknown. Cale simply being better at making good basketball plays than most of them is within the range of outcomes in my mind. Sort of a Thor effect, if you will. I say this because I think I know that him playing with an edge and playing hard are almost locks to happen.1 point -

HuscurAdam reacted to Chuck Taylor for a topic
He also could be a guy like Charlie Easley who mostly rides the bench here and then transfers to a Summit school for more playing time. I think Cale has more upside, but he also probably doesn't going to make it on the court next season, barring injuries or during mop-up time of blowouts. Charlie got playing time on a really weak roster, Cale faces a bigger uphill battle to get on the floor.1 point -

This isn’t your run of the mill, no upside walk on. As Jones said his athletic profile is different than most if those. There is a very real chance he can help us one day and he usually makes the correct basketball play. I believe he will be able to defend in this league without issue as well.1 point -
The 8th inning is why we are so bad. Our SS boots the easiest ground ball ever. Then, we have the runner picked off 1st with runners at 1st and 2nd. Everitt throws the ball to Lincoln. Allows both runs to score. He could have rolled it to Gomes at 1st and we still could have gotten the runner. In the top half of the inning, we get a gift with Minnesota loading the bases on 2 walks and a HBP with 1 out. The next two batters strike out. All you have to do is make contact, but we do what we do best and strike out. Now, we allow Minnesota to tie it in the 9th when the game should be over. And, the Minnesota pitcher has not allowed us to do anything.1 point
