What is needed for HuskerHoops to be successful?
jaimes2000 and 2 others reacted to uneblinstu for a topic
From my view, you need a coach with a clear identity, the patience to develop and build towards that identity and the discipline to stay rooted in it. Sounds simple, but it isn't, in any walk of life. Transformative players are nice, but for them to really be transformative, the identity and culture needs to have taken root first.3 points -

I’ve been a HuskerHoops fan since the late 70’s,I usually went to 3 or 4 home games a year and secured season tickets when the Huskers moved to Pinnacle Bank Arena, I live in Omaha. For many years the talk was the university just did not make a full commitment to HuskerHoops, no practice facility, just an average arena in the Devaney Center and hiring mid-major coaches. After getting a state of art practice facility, new arena in Pinnacle Bank arena and finally hiring a power 5 coach that has NCAA tourney wins, the program has sunk to worst stretch I have seen. My question is what’s it going to take for Fred to turn this program around? I realize BIG conference is a great basketball conference, but I see many other programs (Football schools) invest much less than HuskerHoops and are making the NCAA tournament on a regular basis and other power 5 programs with new coaches turn it around in the first few years. My final thoughts, HuskerHoops needs to recruit the state of Nebraska much better, especially when they are highly rated players. Thanks for listening, HuskerHoops fan in Omaha.2 points -

Goodness Cip...there are sooo many to choose from. I don't know of a specific game, but I know the original Cip had some exceptional teams BUT because the tournament had significantly less teams, we didn't get the opportunity to play in the dance.2 points -

I watch Walker every game and he is by far our best player. He worked very hard last night he just didn’t have the heights to stop The giant. But he has a whole lot of dog in him. Really, really, really hopes he comes back next year…2 points -

Have to go to dinner with family that is in town, so will miss the second half. Like has been said about Iowa all season. Which Iowa team will show up ? And our team.....which defense will show up..... (much different scheme than the other Iowa game... I hope) ...maybe some zone mixed in can make a difference. Do the same thing as last game ...scheme wise and .....then good luck. If it's competitive the whole game, and we don't have to catch up all game long..... we definitely have a good chance.1 point

What is needed for HuskerHoops to be successful?

Fred went to a few high school games the last couple of years. (his kids played for Pius) Miles made an effort early on to build relations with high school coaches but that kind of waned after time. I can remember Doc at state tournament games and Collier use to have clinic for coaches but I think Nee made the biggest effort to reach out with a team camp that was pretty popular and he would have his own high school ranking on his TV show and so on. The thing that has bugged me the most over the years is the number of average players we brought in that didn't pan out or left when we could have had a Nebraska kid that would probably hang around, improve his game and be a contributor his last couple years here.1 point -

If you got rid of the staff after this year and brought in a coach who showed clear progress towards an identity year by year, fans would be willing to let that grow for a while. I think that's the problem with this staff, it doesn't appear as that's what's happening. It seems like it's going the opposite direction. If Trev thinks he's going to have to make a change in two years if he doesn't make a change after this season, then he should make it now. If he thinks they (Trev and Fred and support systems together) get it figured out with some adjustments, then it would make sense to stay the course. But that's going to be Trev's task.1 point -

We need another Dave Hoppen type player who’s a transformative talent but also one of US who wants to stay home & make Dear Old Nebraska U a Winner…! I’ll always be convinced even after Nee & Miles, if we can have some consistent success this thing will REALLY take off.1 point -

I think if we just build a new arena, and hire a coach who has had success in the NCAA Tournament, and are fortunate enough to have some Top 75 talent in state, we will finally break through as a program. Or at least I thought that 10 years ago. Now...1 point -
No mention of Cravens. See she isn't listed as a projected starter. Dang. I'm a little nervous about "Cayton is the best on-ball defender". Clark seemed to score at will during the short time MiCole guarded her last game. In fairness, she seemed to score at will, the entire game.1 point

Haiby has played some of her best games against Iowa. If she’s limited, NU will ask more from reserve guards Allison Weidner, MiCole Cayton, Ruby Porter and Kendall Moriarty. Among backups, Weidner has proven plucky at the hoop while Cayton is the best on-ball defender."1 point -
Sure, ...just speculation for the future...but....with all the length coming in it's conceivable Stewart could just play the forward just as a shooting 4 Not much known about the skill level of Popa, but from what I've seen she's a 5. Mendelson is an active 4 combo... 5. But we'll see...a lot of guessing about next year. Lot's of water to go under the bridge before then. But have to remember, like said, Mendelson will not be a factor until volleyball is over., and will only play a shortened basketball season. But having seen her play, she will be a big actor come tourney time.1 point

If we operate under the assumption that Fred is back next year and the recruiting class stays together, Kieta will be the size of big we haven't really had here in a while. Paired with a recovered Breidenbach, that's a nice start to a front court. If then can convince Walker to come back, I'd be very happy with that. Edwards has already transferred once, so I think he'll be back. This will be an important offseason of development for him. Wilcher has already transferred a well. So he'll be back. Everyone's raved about McPherson, I'm excited to see him and Dawson next year, too. I have no expectation that the McGowens bros will be back. Maybe something will shift there. I think a lot of next year's success hinges on Kieta being a legit B1G post player and finding a legit PG. If those two things don't come together, it'll be another long year. It might be even if they do.1 point -

FWIW, I like that Verge is no longer the axis of evil for the team. He's playing better, sort of, and we now can see that there are many more problems beyond him. I don't mind ripping on players' abilities, but don't like the personal stuff (he doesn't care, he's in it for himself, he's selfish, he's lazy etc.). We don't know any of them and most bad players are simply that, bad players. It's not necessarily an issue with their character.1 point -
