No I don't see Fred on the hot seat. Should get 2 more seasons.

  3. It’s really really hard to understand. Fred wants an offense that spaces and moves the ball and can shoot. And they recruit a ball-dominant transfer guard who can’t shoot and isn’t inclined to pass, a ball-dominant 5 star freshman whose biggest offensive flaw is perimeter shooting, and those two players would not pass a lie detector test if they said yes that Nebraska basketball winning was more important than impressing NBA scouts in this 5 months of season. Then we still have no inside presence to compete in the Big Ten, and also either some bad luck or poor coaching that Mayen and Wilcher and Tominaga all came in as highly rated shooters but for whatever reason they have all struggled, some more than others.

We ran the last guy out of town after he won 22/19 games. Then we hired the Chicago Bulls Coach & after a whopping one Conference game this season we’ve determined HE’S not good enough either. Having an NBA Coach lends the program a credibility & pedigree we’ve never had before. But like the old saying goes, some people would bitch if you hung em with a new rope…

Outside of Lue, the list is pretty much non-existent. That being said...I don't see Coach being on the hot seat. I think he will get at a minimum the extent of his contract.

  7. Copeland injury doomed NU. That they made an impressive mini-run at the very end of Miles' final season showed they had a grit about them, and I'll always remember that Iowa ballgame on Senior Night. Keep that grit going, @brfrad

I think it’s a very fair question. At least in the last 2 years it felt like Fred was out coaching the other team with less talent. Now it doesn’t feel like he’s coaching at all.

  10. I've watched the NU women's' basketball teams for quite a while and this is one of the most exciting teams to watch. I don't know if there will ever be a team as good as the 2009-10 team with Kelsey Griffin and Lindsey Moore and gang but these girls are a lot of fun to watch. This has got too be the deepest team with talent at every position. There isn't much let down when anyone subs in. It all starts with the play of Jaz Shelly. She does it all. I know it may be too early to praise them this much but so far they deserve it. Hopefully everyone stays healthy and they continue to play as a team. I've followed the men's bb team since I was a child but last night I had a choice to either watch the women's game or the men''s and I chose the women's. Fortunately I was able to see the last of the men's game. Or maybe I should say unfortunately I saw it. I usually don't like to criticize the refs but in this game they screwed us big time.

  13. I was fairly impressed with Ramel Lloyd Jr. He seemed to have a good head on his shoulders for being on a loaded team that includes Bronny James. Ramel doesn't appear to get caught up in the hype. He played the game the right way. He showed that he had a lot of skill without being 'full of himself.' I liked a lot of what I saw last night.

  14. Finally had a chance to watch the game. I thought both the offensive and defensive game plans were good. Defensively, we played heady for about half the game. Rotations out of the post double were good during that stretch, and we were very tough to score on. Offensively, we simply couldn’t make shots, and when we didn’t make shots, we quit moving. Wilhelm now deserves all of Lat’s minutes. Start the kid at the 4 and leave him there. Walker-Andre works fine as a 5 rotation. Guards have to have some pride and make friggin jumper. Verge is no longer the problem. He’s creating a lot of looks right now. Missing wide open shots or not staying in movement to get them is the problem.

So just hold on to him forever because he coached in the NBA and because we’ll never get anybody else who coached in the NBA? OK got it. FWIW I am not suggesting he is on the hot seat yet. What I am suggesting is if we are 24-66 after three years, why shouldn’t it be hot or at least warm? 24-66 over three years is putrid even for Nebraska basketball. For those who down voted my post or say there’s no hot seat talk at all at the end of this year, what kind of benchmarks do you need to see next year then if we are indeed 24-66 after three years and Bryce has left? I’m not seeing any growth in this program whatsoever. That non-NBA head coach Tim Miles had us in the NCAA Tournament in year 2 and won 47 games in his first three years here. Heck, he won 19 games in his final season here and we fired him, and we’ve won 19 games total since Fred got here. I get that “it’s Fred freakin Hoiberg”. But we really, really suck.

  21. The issues I have with the 3's is that they are usaually bad shots. Rarely is there an open 3 shot off of good passing. Its mostly players taking a 3 without ball movement where they can take that shot at any point. Its clear Bryce is probably gone after this year by the way he plays. Funny thing is he doesnt need to shoot like that and score 15 plus a game to get noticed by the NBA.

For me it has krept to warm. I am huge on PG play. Once upon a time I heard college basketball is a guard’s game. I still believe that to this day. And our PG play and recruiting seems like Fred is throwing $%#t against the wall and seeing what sticks. I still haven’t seen a true PG being targeted by the staff and it really may be our undoing. Real world example of the impact of this. If you didn’t notice during last night’s game, there were multiple times where we were actually passing the ball around the perimeter, and the shooter received the ball in a way they had to adjust to gather the pass instead of catching it clean for a pure shot. A good pass would have been step in three point attempts which are a heck of a lot easier to knock down.

  23. Not sure I can handle over dribbling because I have never seen that work in a team environment but I get what you mean. I don’t care if Bryce takes 30 shots if it is the right basketball play. If you are open, go. If not, move the ball. Problem is he hasn’t figured that out yet. Pressed way too much right now. Hopefully it will come around. He is young after all.

There's an air conditioner on Hoiberg's padded seat. His fanny seems to be as a cool as a cucumber, for now. Talk again after another 1 1/2 years...

  25. I guess as far as Verge goes we have until at least January 5th to try and figure something out as that is maybe the first time we can Trey back. Honestly I can handle him over-dribbling or Bryce driving and taking 30 shots if we can make a winning offense out of it. I'm not saying that this is the path we should pursue; I'm saying that conference standings are based on wins and loses, not style points.

  27. I think Kieta will help in games like this next year. Everything I've heard about him is that he's a B1G post player. And a floor general. Need one of those. Maybe it's McPherson. Maybe it's Lloyd. Maybe it's a transfer. But that's a huge need, as we all know.

  28. I officially feel about the Nebraska basketball team as I do about the Nebraska football team. They are the same. Hoiberg is Frost. Finkel. Einhorn. Einhorn. Finkel.

  29. I don't agree that we're getting good looks. How many shots come off the second or (gasp!) third pass, with no dribbling in between? I think we have competent shooters, but they rush them too much just to get them off. NOBODY passes up a shot to get a better shot for a teammate. This is clown ball. You put Wilcher or a Kensei on a real TEAM and they'd drain them.

If this continues on the same trajectory, and I see no reason why it's suddenly going to change, hot seat talk is more than warranted at the end of the season. This team should not look like it has for large stretches thus far this season. And it doesn't appear there are many answers from the coaching staff. Maybe it'll get going when Trey comes back, but there are a lot of potentially bad looking games between now and then. It's utterly mind-boggling why things are where they are at this point. When he was hired, I'd have guessed a less than 1% chance we'd be in this spot early in year 3. Yet, here we are.

  32. 1st and foremost, this is not a post to say that Tim Miles should be our coach and that Fred Hoiberg was an awful hire. I was as excited as anybody about getting Fred even though we were getting rid of one of my all time favorite coaches. Having said that, it is a bit disturbing when looking at statistics for this season, San Jose State is in the top 15 in 3 point percentage, and we are hovering in the 300s. And its not like our strengths of schedule are that different at this point of the season. Our offense often looks more stagnant than it did with Miles. I can recall lots of times where we would complain about a lack of ball movement. But with guys like Verge, Teddy Allen, and even Bryce McGowens, there is not any more ball movement than we witnessed under the Miles regime. I don't think any of us would have thought that this is where we'd be under 3 years of Hoiberg. Do I think he's a great coach, absolutely. However, how can you be 6-41 against P5/6 schools and have a job or at least feel the seat warming quickly. Did the NBA mentality follow him back to college? There's no lottery pick waiting when we miss postseason again. I am just at a total loss of words...

  33. I get that but at what point are players not making shots year after year on Fred? This is like Frost saying his system works great as long as the snaps are accurate, as long as the O Line blocks, as long as we don’t fumble the ball, as long as we don’t false start or hold, etc etc etc. Fred and Matt A bring in the players who are supposed to be elite shooters. So why do we have the worst 3 point shooting team at Nebraska in the last 20 years?
    1 point
  34. I quit watching after halftime. Haven’t done that since the Cam Mack year and never before that. Is this program in a better place than it was 3 years ago? I would certainly argue no. This offense is horrendous and can’t take much longer than an hour for the opposing team to scout. Thank you Doc for keeping it close, tell your buddy Hoiberg to hold up his end of the bargain.

  37. Amy talked about rebounding needing to change for her team. But what she really needed was a point guard. Jaz and Allison have provided a key missing piece to her puzzle. We now have Scoggin in her natural role of the spot up shooter. We also have a deep bench. We can get in some foul trouble and we can ride it out. I agree we should be receiving votes as a top 25 team. Need a win at MN and a strong finish of the non-con and the top 25 ranking should come.

It’s year 3. Back when Fred was hired I think the honest trajectory most of us expected or hoped for was: Year 1: any postseason would be really cool but not expected. Hope for good foundation building and get better throughout season (7-25 with some losses to teams we had no business losing to, lost 17 in a row to end the year) Year 2: an NIT berth would be solid progress and on the bubble would be great. (7-20, Covid issues played a part, but overall vastly underwhelming and we beat no one of significance) Year 3: middle of the pack Big Ten team solidly in the NCAA Tournament. (5-4 right now and realtimerpi projected 10-21, one of worst 3 point shooting teams in the entire country, lost another buy game, wasting the best recruit in program history) assuming that happens that’s 24-66 over three years. Why should this staff get another year? What has worked or been even remotely encouraging?
