    Trey broken foot

So . . . Trey's foot is Exhibit A for the travails of Nebrasketball: 1. At the end of last season, we expected a highly-experienced team to return: Banton, Trey, Walker, Lat and Kobe. 2. Turns out, Banton is now a multi-millionaire (not from NIL), Trey is out for half the season, Kobe's chronic back pain limits his minutes, Lat has back pain but plays anyway. 3. So . . . we now have a team that's heavily young (Bryce, Wilhelm and Keon) and new (Keisei, Wilcher, and Verge). The only highly-experienced player entirely good-to-go is Derrick . . . and he's playing well. That's a huge gap between high hopes and brutal reality. That said, the team has made huge progress from losing to a nobody to competing well against a power-5 team in their first road game.

  2. I tweeted the word "shitshow" twice before that happened. It would have come up. The fact that someone complains about the refs after almost every single game we play I would imagine might contribute to you feeling the need to downplay how egregious some of these calls were. Things got so out of hand that game that no one is even talking about how Breidenbach fouled out because he got an offensive rebound.

  3. He’s watched the team play the past 3 seasons?

  4. Third OT. Both teams struggling to score. We're up 4 with 2 minutes to go and this ends up as a foul on Breidenbach. Instead of us getting the possession on an obvious jump ball call, Thomas Allen gets to shoot 2 FTs and Breidenbach is out of the game. We had opportunities to win in this period but we got hamstrung here by Teddy who made this call and then spent 3 minutes at the monitor just to bring it home. There's a reason this guy doesn't call Big 10 games anymore. Still counts as a loss though.

    Trey broken foot

On their podcast, Trey said he was ahead of schedule and will be closer to the 6 weeks instead of the 8 weeks. He said he's planning to be back for the Michigan St. game on Jan 5.

I see CHARLIE CREME now has us in the proposed NCAA brackets. Some are now paying attention. A bit early but nice to see. https://www.espn.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/30423107/ncaa-women-bracketology-2022-women-college-basketball-projections

  7. Lat did kind of go for a “head butt” in the middle of the scrum. He was 100% the instigator. Not saying he should have been suspended another game, but not starting seems appropriate if Hoiberg had wanted. Of course, that could be just me not wanting him to start period too. Agree on all of the others though. No punches and not coming off the bench in a situation like that is tough.

  8. And yet if players would just jump stop, shot fake, Dowuona is still trying to figure out how to get the beer and popcorn off of him from the seats. I don't understand it. Lost skill.

  12. I've thought Lat had the body language of a middle schooler since the beginning of last year. The fact that it hasn't gotten any better is discouraging. We've had numerous players with this problem the past three seasons. I guess that may come with the territory when you have a player's coach. Juwan Howard and Penny Hardaway's teams have the same issue. This really wasn't much of a problem under our previous three coaches. Either need to start putting more of an emphasis on maturity in recruiting, or let Doc be the bad cop in practices.

  13. It also matters when it shows how the team responds to adversity. Lat Mayen getting tossed because he threw a temper tantrum is the part of the iceberg that we don't see every day in practice.

  14. Letting refereeing be the focal point of any loss essentially excuses the boys for not playing as well as they need to. The thing is, they made a lot of bonehead mistakes that cost them the game. The referees did not force them to do that. When we refuse to acknowledge that Lat Mayen consistently got beat on defense, and made dumb plays on offense...including dribbling the ball about a dozen times IN THE LANE on one possession, then got himself thrown out of the game because he can't control himself. That is a problem When Wilhelm and CJ continually chuck up ill-advised 3 point shots that brick or airball early in the shot clock when we're trying to build on a double digit lead in the second half (or stop a 14-0 run by the opponent), THAT is a problem. Sure, we hate refs that make a spectacle of themselves on the floor, and TV is probably the worst at that, but it means fuck all if the team goes out there and can't do what needs to be done to win a game. Even if it has to be done in spite of the refereeing. And we're doing the team a disservice by excusing their bad play because all we can do is talk about "oh woe is me, the refs are out to get us". What I'm saying is, refs suck. So what. Be better. Overcome. Teams that go to the NCAA tournament don't whine around and cry about the refs all season long. They beat the teams they play. Even if the team has 8 players on the court. It's just the way it is. Which is all a long winded way of saying "winners win. Losers complain about the refs". We need to not be losers.

  15. I will always complain about Teddy V. He shouldn’t be officiating.

  16. My 2 cents worth: The announcers were awful, but I will give them a little bit of a break, as it can't be easy to broadcast a game when you are not physically there. The officiating was not good. That being said, Nebraska still had chances to win the game. NC State also played very few players in OT. Not a big fan of that myself, but almost all coaches do that in OT. I agree with the people who say this offense leaves something to be desired. Too much dribbling and not enough ball movement. Except for Verge and Walker, most of the rest of the players don't know how to make good passes, or in some cases, even simple passes. I didn't play a single minute last night, and I had as many assists (0) as 5 of the 9 players who did get minutes. McGowens played 58 minutes and didn't have a single assist. To his credit, he also didn't have a turnover. I was a follower of the recent Nebraska Wesleyan teams. They were fun to watch. Lots of ball movement, and very little dribbling, unless the shot clock was down to about 10 seconds, then they would look to create off of the dribble. Would that offense work at the D1 level, probably not as effective as at the D3 level? The thing that bothered me the most is the lack of adjustment on the defensive end. NC State only had 1 player who shot over 25% from 3 last night, and he did not play in any of the OT's. There is no way Seabron should have shot 20 FT's AND had 21 FG attempts. He played 56 minutes and had 4 assists and 7 TO's. Either (1) sag off and have all 5 guys have at least 1 foot in the paint and make him make the pass and the shooter hit the 3, or (2) as soon as he gets the ball out top, run another guy at him and make him pass the ball immediately. I will always keep up hope that someday Nebraska will win at least 1 NCAA tournament game.

  18. One thing I'm interested to see is if there's any sort of punishment for Lat after this game. Suspension or loss of starting spot.

  19. A bit surprised with all the negativity. The team that walked out against Western Illinois would have got rolled badly in this game. We should have won this game. Far and away the best game we have played this year. Not perfect by any means, but there were times the ball movement was excellent. Problem was guys like Wilcher were cold and missing their open looks. I thought the decision making on when to attack vs pass, especially by Verge, was much better. Not a lot of hero ball; Fred wanted to see players make the easy play and I thought this was the best all season we have done that. Finally looked a bit like Hoiberg ball out there. I had no hope going into Big Ten play before this game. If we play like this, or heaven forbid keep improving, we are going to be proud of this team. We were a dumpster fire our first 5 games. We are making big progress. It was a great effort tonight and I was proud of the fight, even if we came up a hair short.

  20. if Lat doesn't see the court at all we probbl win that game. I didn't see every minute, including missing the infamous "lemm estart some sh*t on the opponents floor" scrum he started, but what I did see he was a large vat of suck. hoiberg's obviously looking for a different player to eventually emerge, but I'm wondering how much patience is too much? especially when it's costing you games you can and need to win? in any event, I'm normally not comfy coming down on individual players too much, but he's been driving me nuts so far this year and injury isn't explaining a lot of the crap i think i'm seeing.

  22. I only like to bitch about the referees when they are uniformly inept. A 43-15 discrepancy in foul distribution indicates subjective bias, if not outright dishonesty. It would be the equivalent of a football crew calling twenty offensive holding penalties on one team and two on the other. In neither sport would the ignored team be able to win, barring a miracle.

  23. I'd just like to see Lat's minutes reduced because he's not playing that well. Maybe ironically, the NCST game was maybe his best game of the season. I know he's been battling some injuries that have probably been hampering him. But he doesn't seem to be helping much out there right now. Maybe he's doing little things that are hard for me to see that keep him on the court, not discounting that possibility.

    5 game stretch

I think it'll be a little of both. I think they come out fairly inspired but won't have enough in the tank to finish the deal. IU did have a 2OT excruciating loss on the road the day before, so maybe they'll be fighting some of that, too. That extra game time and day to recover is a lot, though... Tomorrow is gonna be tough. I feel a lot better about Tuesday.

  25. No punches were thrown, nobody got hurt. An arm was extended for a shove, feelings were hurt, and the officials took the enforcement stance over just cooling tempers. Seems Hoiberg took the "cooling tempers" approach here.

  30. THIS All they had in the overtimes was #1. It was so obvious that they were just clearing out and letting him drive.. Make someone else beat ya! I cant believe over 4 OTs we couldn't figure it out. Between DOC and Fred..

  32. I forgot to do an update after the South Dakota game. Lots of changes in the pecking order in the Big Ten, but everybody's ranking remains largely the same. Minnesota is undefeated and we are still ahead of them, so we got that going for us, I guess. In the other teams of interest category: Colorado moves up to #57 and San Jose State moves up to #311. The next 4 updates will likely be pretty depressing, but we press onward. Okay. Here we go! KenPom rankings as of 12-02-21 ======================= B1G (0-0): 2. Purdue 18. Michigan 20. Iowa 21. Ohio State 22. Illinois 24. Michigan State 28. Wisconsin 31. Indiana 43. Northwestern 48. Maryland 86. Penn State 88. Rutgers 97. Nebraska 98. Minnesota Non-Conference (5-3): 179. 33. And it was strange/frustrating how whenever we did make a basket, it almost looked like we used that as an excuse to not have to defend on the next possession. Bryce kept picking up #1 about 25 feet from the basket but had no plans to stay in front of him. This would have been the game to pack the paint and make them beat you with outside shots. NC State looked like a really bad offensive team to me.

  36. I'm done complaining about the any of the players. Hoiberg is easily our worst coach since Jerry Bush. He just seems so bad in game. Its like her forgot that its okay to call and timeout and coach college kids. All of our potential game ending possessions were expectedly bad; just like Husker football, I know if the game is close Nebrasketball will lose.
