Huskers needed a good, tough test tonight and thankfully Jaz with 30 and Cravens rebounding we get a hard earned win. San Diego should be a good test tomorrow.

Gee, I am really glad Jaz transferred to Nebraska. The Dragons are a much better test than the earlier opposition.

  6. This game wasn't as close as the final score indicates. Nebraska built up a nice halftime lead despite South Dakota hitting everything from outside. Then with 11 minutes to go and us up by 7, CJ hits a 3 and Keisei steals the inbound pass and we're up 12. Nebraska tacks on 10 straight after that and it's 75-53 with 6 minutes to go. Keisei was a hell of a spark today. His shooting got us back into the game and he helped key our run. His first make of the game he has a guard closing out on him, takes a side dribble, and knocked it down. He was on all day after that including some nice shots in the paint. He's an offensive explosion waiting to happen. Kobe had it today and Verge didn't, and the minutes reflected that. With Trey out it's vital that at least one of them is playing well every single game. Kobe actually missed a bunch of shots too today but you don't notice it as much because he's not dribbling as much. Bryce makes at least a few plays a game where you can see why he's such a highly regarded NBA prospect. This was his 3rd game with 10+ FT attempts; his athleticism has been racking up a lot of free points for us Walker tied the Nebraska record for consecutive makes over multiple games with 15 today. Ade Daugunduro set the record back in 2008. After his first miss today, he proceeded to make his next 5. We started out well again so today was the day that Keon stayed in after the first TV timeout. South Dakota goes on a run and out he goes. A lot of empty minutes Mayen looks completely lost out there. Breidenbach with active hands out there today, 5 steals. He has his wtf moments but was a plus today. Wilcher had a solid 20 minutes out there today. He's just really solid and Keisei playing so well probably limited his minutes. Ed was a plus on the boards tonight.

    Dear Doc Sadler

Dear Doc, We here in Nebraska think you are a great guy. You are funny, witty, goofy and look and walk like a penguin. And for the most part, you're a pretty good coach too. But we also know that growing up in the south you probably spent more time in the gym than in math class, so we want to help you out a bit. This piece of knowledge could radically change your life, and possibly even extend your coaching career 10-20 years (if you want to keep going that long anyway). So, this is a bit complex, involving numbers and all, but here it is: Three is greater than two. I realize this may not click all at once. It is a lot to take in. But let it simmer for a while. Let it ruminate in your mind. Draw the numbers on the chalkboard and see if starts to clarify in your mind. It will take a while, but I believe with perseverance, you can get it. Okay, now I am going one step farther. We are going to advanced mathematics here, and you may never fully being able to grasp this, but it still has to be explained: Not only is 3 > 2, but it is 50% greater than 2. Let me put it another way since you didn't pay enough attention in math class: 3 is 1.5 times as much as 2. This means it take three 2s to equal two 3s. Whoa! Mind blown, right? But it's true. So this means, when the opposing team makes those WIDE OPEN 3s that your defense gives them, they are getting 50% more points than if they would otherwise have made a difficult contested 2 in the paint. Crazy thought, isn't it? So here a couple little small helpful tips we here in Nebraska would like to offer: (1) When the opponent parks one of their best shooters on the weak side corner, rather than having the Nebraska player who is guarding that shooter go ALL THE WAY TO THE MIDDLE OF THE PAINT, maybe, just maybe, keep him a little closer to the shooter, so that when the opponent swings the ball to the weak side (or drives and kicks, or throws a skip pass, or uses their big man to block the defender from getting back out to his man), the Nebraska player will actually be able to get back to his man and contest the shot. Because remember, the 3 is worth 50% more than a 2. And the corner 3 is a shorter shot than the top of the key 3. (2) Just because the opponent may occasionally drive the ball into the paint, or throw and entry pass into the paint, doesn't mean you have to send ALL 5 NEBRASKA DEFENDERS into the paint as well. In fact, you don't even need to ALWAYS double team that post entry. Believe it or not, sometimes your players can man up and defend one-on-one. You should let them try it sometime and see how it works. Especially when the opponent's big catches the ball 10 feel from the hoop, you don't really need to send a hard double thereby leaving his man WIDE OPEN for a 3 (which remember, is worth 50% more than the 2 point shot). (3) I know that when you were growing up in the south in the 1970s, you and many other of your friends couldn't make shots farther than 10 feet from the basket. But I have to share a revelation with you. The game has changed. Players today grew up watching Steph Curry, and they like to shoot from 22 feet and beyond. It is all they did all day growing up. Even the big fat plodders on the other team like to shoot that long shot. And believe it or not, they can make it--especially when THEY ARE WIDE OPEN. (4) You don't need to have 4 defenders in the paint AT ALL TIMES. You can actually let some of your off ball defenders guard their guys as well. I know this is radical, but it is true. There is no law that says you must have at least 4 defenders in the paint at ALL TIMES. So, there it is. Life changing knowledge for you to contemplate. If it still isn't clicking, maybe you could ask one of the team tutor's to sit down with you and help you figure it out. I hear some of them are pretty good at advanced mathematics. We believe you can do it, but you have to believe in yourself. It is within you. I know you have not been able to grasp this concept for the entirely of your 40 year coaching career, but we believe even old penguins like you can learn new tricks--even new math tricks. So dig deep, meditate if necessary, and try to pull it out of your inner being. If you can do it, it will change your life---AND change the lives of all of us Nebraska fans who have been pulling out our hair year after year after year watching our opponents shoot WIDE OPEN 3s time and time again. Sincerely, All Nebraska Hoops Fans cc: Fred Hoiberg

  18. Easy to point out the issues, there are a few. But a few very good performances today as well. The elephants on the court are easy to pick on, but the coaching staff must be seeing things I simply cannot see. This may be gibberish but that is because I left PBA with a scrambled head.

  36. About that. I was thinking this morning about the job Hoiberg has done in his first three years and compared it to some others. Rick Pitino took Iona to the dance in his first year and in year two he's 6-0 with a win over top 10 ranked Alabama Ben Johnson in his first year at Minnesota is 5-0 TJ Otzelberger is 5-0 in his first year at Iowa State with a win over Xavier (who beat Ohio State earlier this season) Wes Miller is 5-1 in his first year at Cincinnati with a win over top 10 (5??) Illinois Craig Smith is 5-0 in his first year at Utah Porter Moser is 5-1 in his first year at Oklahoma It's feasible to think that every one of those first year (and second year in the case of Pitino) will equal Hoiberg's first two years' win totals by the end of November. I would also expect most if not all of those coaches to make the dance in their first year.

  42. Watched the game on DVR yesterday. What stuck out to me is that we just don't seem to be connected on defense. I get what we're attempting to do with the constant switching, but we clearly don't communicate well and guys don't seem to play with urgency and passion on that end. They are not locked in. There are also certain guys who just don't do a good job of staying in front of the ball off of the dribble. We need to have people buy in on defensive end to have any chance of winning games in conference play. I've seen enough on offense to at least feel a bit positive that we can become dangerous when guys share the ball and hit shots. I agree with the sentiments about Lat. He can't handle the ball and he even has trouble catching it. He's not a rim defender and he's not an aggressive rebounder. Play Edwards and Breidenbach. Granted, Wil had a bad game against TSU, but I'm not as down on him as some seem to be. Might as well get him minutes and let him learn on the fly. I sense Edwards will mature into a nice player once he gains some confidence and experience.

  44. Wasn't able to watch the game last night, so watching it now. 1st half: -First 4 minutes were the best we've played all year. If Keon's minute allotment in the rotation is 8-12 minutes, I'm good with him getting those minutes at the start of each half. In the first 3 minutes, he forced two turnovers, had a rebound on a good block out and had a nice contest on a shot (I actually thought he tipped it but wasn't credited with a block). I felt like he set the tone defensively from the tip, the bench players just didn't keep it up. He's going to be a great 3 and D player eventually. - Bryce had a George Gervin finger roll. That was sweet. - Agree with what someone said earlier. Derrick needs to give the same effort on the boards and defensively as he did last year. He's not doing that right now. But playing well offensively. - The offense itself seems fine. We've gotten wide open threes within the offense from Keisei (2), Bryce (2-3), Keon (2), Wilhelm (1), CJ (2), Lat (several). Just missed almost all of them. - CJ's defense is poor, but I appreciate his effort blocking out. We need his shooting and he's the best on the team at moving without the ball right now. - There are only two ball stoppers on the team at this point. Verge (it's just going to happen with him, but he's playing pretty darn good now) and Lat, who of all people should not be a ball stopper. The turnovers and missed wide open threes are bad enough. But when he catches and just holds the ball and jab steps for 8 seconds, it's frustrating and a possession killer. My old high school coach would not allow that from anyone, let alone a guy who's not a threat to create. 2nd half: -Another solid first 4 minutes defensively. Only gave up 3 points before the first sub came in. I like Keon. You don't have to worry about effort or dumb mistakes with him. He's shooting the ball with confidence and they'll start falling. - Bryce and Verge playing very well. And EFFICIENT. - Wilhelm and Ed both really bad in this one. Is Wilhelm not being coached? It's kinda embarrassing how confused he is after laying someone out and getting called for a foul. - A positive: Our guards are doing a much better job of finishing at the rim. Overall the team was 22/28 on 2FG's. - Bryce, CJ, Verge and Walker played as well as you could ask them to, offensively. Tenn St. stayed in the game because almost everyone else played just poorly enough, and about 5-6 of their made threes were prayers they just threw up there that went in. - People might not remember, but our three point shooting improved dramatically over the course of each of the past two seasons. Everything will look different if/when that happens. Free throws and 2P% have been substantially better this year. We're 71% on "close 2's" this year, compared to 55% and 54% in the previous two years. 73% from FT's compared to 64% and 61%. I feel like I'm the only one who still has hope for a fun year. To the people who think we're not running an offense or sharing the ball, we really are. Turn on a college basketball game any given night and you'll see stagnant offense. We're getting shots at the rim, free throw line and wide open threes. It's going to turn around. Maybe lower your W/L expectations. My preseason hope was that we'd go around .500 this year. I had no tourney expectations. We won 7 freaking games each of the last two years.
