  1. To get back to the subject for the title of this thread, I think Mr. Edwards will be firmly in the mix. 1 on 1 with Keon Edwards

  2. Help me out here. Keon looks more explosive and more quick-twitch in his movements than Bryce. He's bigger and stronger (weighs 25 lbs more). Same height. His shot looks really good. When players talk about the best shooters on the team, they mention Keon (along with Keisei, Lat, CJ, Kobe). And this is maybe my favorite excerpt from any article all offseason: As far as perimeter defense, Hoiberg said Trey McGowens and Keon Edwards would be their two best guys. Wow. Hoiberg has been making it a point to remind the media and fans all summer/fall that Bryce is just a true freshman. But he's mentioning Keon's defense in the same breath as one of the best perimeter defenders in the conference. If his defense is that good already, he's going to be hard to keep off the floor (same thing has been said about Wilhelm). Are the media/fans placing too high of expectations on Bryce, and not giving enough hype to Keon? It's probably not fair to compare the two as players. Maybe Keon will be a three and D and dunks in transition type player, and Bryce will be the smooth scorer and secondary ball handler. We'll see. I'm guessing/hoping we'll see them on the floor together a lot. Those two along with another shooter and a creator - maybe CJ and Verge - could be dangerous.

  3. So are we. Good early test for how legit we may or may not be. Good barometer.

  4. One of the best defenders. One of the best shooters. Also an explosive dunker. Who was calling for him to start earlier this fall?

  5. Edwards get downplayed because of what happened at DePaul. Possible he would have been as highly regarded as Bryce had he stayed in high school another year. Really doubt we get him in that scenario. People sleeping on Edwards have been working for us so far.

  6. It seemed like the columnist version of putting Wichita St on NCAA probation to show Kansas they're not messing around. Hey, be hard on basketball I guess though it's hard to reconcile that vs the relative kid gloves being used on a football program that is doing less with more.

  7. The prior regime didnt leave him with much he had 1 returning player his first year with a bunch of short term replacements cant really blame him for that since he took the job in April? Then COVID happens. Meanwhile the sport with all the resources cant even get a 5* to visit while it seems like Fred has 1 in Lincoln every other week and has already landed 1. Would it surprise anyone if he gets more in the future? I always said 18 wins I'll stick to that. 18 this year and has some talent coming back next year with more coming in. This program is in a good place. This is all we could have asked for when the hire was made.

  9. After last nights result Union Omaha is the regular season champs (supporters shield) and has #1 seed for the playoffs locked up. First home playoff game is at 4 on November 13. Tickets are incredibly reasonable, need two wins to lift the trophy!!!

    One Week From Tonight

can't argue that... i just think it is really going to be a battle.....i'm hoping for a finish at 6th in the BigTen. i'm guessing it will be a fight with nw, msu, and minnie for that spot.

  12. So I think we see a couple of freshman in the starting lineup. My five are Haiby, Issie, Coley, Markowski, and Jaz as our point.

  16. I'm not surprised that coach is red shirting Popa. Having a year to build her strength as well as learning more in practice will benefit her future. If I remember right she was still growing not that long ago. The Big Ten is a very physical league especially for posts. This will be a big plus for her. With 16 players on the team having a redshirt or two can be a good thing. I think Coley will basically be a 3 but could be a stretch 4 in certain situations like matchups or an injury to one of our forwards. Coach has a lot of options with the depth we have.

  17. so far Watkins seems alright. I need a larger sample size before I can judge. But Heady, I thought, was great. Insightful and passionate. He knew his stuff and was dedicated. Really liked his podcast with nyatawa as well. He was very invested and his writing was not boring.

  18. Numbers, at this point (in terms of team ranking), don't mean much to me. We're not the #81 team. We're probably among a group of 100 or so that are "on the bubble" so to speak. Until we prove it on the floor. But, unlike the last couple of years, I see some reason to believe they might actually be able to field a competitive team. Two years ago, it was like, no, not gonna happen. Did not have the horses. Grabbed a whole bunch of whoever was available to fill out a roster, and the only question was how bad was it going to be? Going into last year, I had the same reservations. Turned the roster over again, brought in another group of unprovens, and I remember asking why there was any more reason for optimism going into Year 2 than there had been going into Hoiberg Year 1. This year, though, we have some dudes. We have some skilled players. We have good backcourt length, some shooters, and some athletes, and you kinda look at our group and think they ought to be able to play some defense and score. Last year, we had no regular rotation guys who shot the ball better than 38% from three and just as many who were under 30% as were over 35%. Guards. In our regular rotation. Who couldn't hit at least 30% from 3. Three of them. That's terrible. And that won't happen this year. I don't know about 81. Rankings outside the top 25 or so are pretty arbitrary at this point. The computers don't have much reason to like us right now. But I do.

  19. Starting five may be close to the same group but I will argue that a year more maturity and understanding the system will make them better. We should be be better on the perimeter this year. I liked Delano, but the dude really struggled on the perimeter. Good teams and the entire Big Ten could take advantage of a weakness like that. My hope is no such weakness exists this year. We still have a bucket load of slashers despite the loss of Delano; and that should be a continued strength of ours. Our interior game should be greatly enhanced this year. Yvan simply was a wasteland with the ball in his hands. Sorry...but true. Defensively we will miss Delano and Yvan. But Teddy was sort of a steal or bust defender. So I am guessing that as long as Doc is near, we will be a solid if not a way above average defensive team. But hey, here is a revelation, other teams have improved as well. I fully EXPECT us to be in the top half of the Big Ten...if so, fact so, playing in the dance.

  20. So, uh, about those expectations ... Trey Mac says it's NCAA or bust -- at a minimum. Their *expectation* is that they get that first NCAA win this season. But, you probably know you were picked 11th. What do you think about that? "We know how hard we work; we know the pieces we have."

  21. The 2017-18 roster had five 4-stars (Watson, Gill, Roby, Palmer, Allen), one 5-star (Copeland) and two other guys who were in the Rivals top 150 at one point (Jordy, Nana). Along with McVeigh and Taylor who were both rotation guys the year prior. Thomas Allen showed up in Lincoln after being offered a scholarship by Bill Self. Copeland's back was finally healthy and he was poised to return to his freshman form when he was on first round draft boards. Gill was apparently fully healthy now, too. We heard reports that Palmer dominated practices his redshirt year the way Petteway did. Watson was coming off an awesome sophomore year where he was one of the better point guards in the conference. Jordy was coming off a solid freshman year for a young big man. We all knew Roby's potential. On paper BEFORE the season, the 17-18 roster was comparable to this year's, talent-wise. Some of the guys on this year's roster won't be what we think they'll be. Some will get frustrated with a lack of playing time and transfer. Hopefully at the end of the year we will still be thinking it's the most talented roster since the 90's.

  22. Pretty good OWH article, but as a close observer of the Nee-era teams, I would use the same headline but substitute the 92-93 team which I witnessed losing to a much inferior K State team in the Big Eight tourney first round and then being blown out by New Mexico State in the first round of the NCAA. That team was equally talented but did not win the NIT. The main cause of team conflict that year was the talented Andre Woolridge.

  24. Below are Trey McGowens numbers with Teddy on the court followed by his numbers without Teddy. These are numbers vs top 100 teams though they look similar when I run them from vs all competition. Statistically I can make an argument that McGowens played better when Teddy wasn't out there that I suspect someone could back up with game tape. I would assume that with Teddy out there, McGowens had more of a feeling that when he passed the ball it wasn't coming back to him and the assist% difference seems to indicate that. Seemed like that all came to a head when they couldn't get off a last second shot in part because Trey didn't want to pass Teddy the ball. On the flip side Banton's numbers were better with Teddy on the floor and I'd assume it was because Banton didn't feel pressure to be a scorer or find himself with the ball as much with time running down on the shot clock. I guess to summarize Teddy didn't seem to make most players better scorers as much as he masked poorer scoring players. It would seem we've replaced most of these poorer shooters with better ones. For the most part I think this group will share the ball more even accounting for Verge overshooting because Verge can also set up teammates with passes, something that Teddy didn't excel at.

  25. There are three Division 1 Men’s Basketball programs in this state, and the one leading the way in terms of guys on NBA rosters, the Nebraska Cornhuskers. What a time.
