    Talent

Interesting overview: Do stars matter? Predicting order of finish in the B1G based solely on recruiting rankings Just goes to show that talent matters, but it’s not the only thing that matters. By Connor Lemons@lemons_connor Sep 6, 2021, 12:01pm EDT Share this story Share this on Facebook (opens in new window) Share this on Twitter (opens in new window) SHAREAll sharing options Photo by Zach Bolinger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images What if recruiting rankings always translated to success on the court? What if the team who pulled in the top recruiting class each season always won the conference without fail? What if nobody ever improved after getting to school, and what if no top recruits ever fell apart/busted? That would be pretty boring, I think. Part of what makes college athletics so fun is the fact that more often than not, recruits do veer away from what the “experts” predicted for them at some point. Two or three-star prospects end up being taken as first-round NBA Draft picks. Five-star recruits who were supposed to take the world by storm crash and burn, and wind up transferring elsewhere, or stop playing altogether. Teams jacked with talent underperform, while the plucky underdogs make a run to the Sweet Sixteen. It happens all the time, and it’s fantastic. But what if everything went according to plan? What if recruiting rankings and “stars” were the only thing that mattered? The age-old question of “do stars mater?” is dumb. Yes, they absolutely matter. Why do Duke and Kentucky continue to perform at the highest level, while Elon and William & Mary do not? The big programs pull in the best recruits... the four and five-star kids. The smaller schools, like Elon and William & Mary, rarely lock up any recruits that are awarded stars at all. So yes, they matter. But how much do they matter? To answer that question and have a bit of fun, I looked up the recruiting rankings/”stars” awarded to every single player in the Big Ten conference. Every. Single. One. I then averaged the number of “stars” each team in the B1G has per player, and ranked the teams from first to last. A few notes on this: Walk-on’s were not included, as they were likely never given stars. Walk-on’s did not pull any team’s average down. If you find a walk-on listed here, let me know so I can remove them. I did my best to research and find out if they walked-on or not. Transfer players count, and their original stars from their first team are included. If a player started at a small school like Elon, for example, they probably had zero stars. Even if they are a great player now at a Big Ten program (following a transfer, assumedly), their original number of stars is used here. If it was not clear if a player was a walk-on or not, I did not include them. All recruiting rankings are taken from 247Sports.com. I prefer them over Rivals and ESPN. Rosters are for the 2021-2022 season Players improve over time, we know this. Part of the reason this list is so fun/surprising is because there are a ton of players listed below who have completely out-played what the “experts” predicted for them in high school. I do not believe this is how the B1G will shake out this season, but if we’re only looking at stars, here’s your final standings! 10. Seriously. I hate all these small ego dipshits that insist on using "Power 6" or "Major 7" monikers to feel included in something that is completely irrelevant to whatever it is they are talking about. The five autonomy conferences were given the nickname "Power 5" and it's been horribly co-opted, particularly by basketball-centric conferences to make them feel more important than they really are. /rant

  13. i could easily see it coming down to BTT play (for shot at NCAA Tourney). sure would be nice to have it cemented before tourney, but......lose 3 or more in non-con and chances are slim....very slim (barring a HUGE turnaround in play). i say a non-con sweep or only 1 loss is needed.

  16. I think he plays point in HS just to have the ball in his hand because he’s just that good of a scorer. I think he’s an off guard that’s more of a shooting guard that can handle the ball if need be.

  19. Boy, I'd be willing to bet Doc will continue to do the defensive scouting. He'll probably come up with the game plan. He might not be on the floor coaching, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was in the film room running through things with players/coaches. Breaking down an opposing offense and figuring out how to defend it is his forte and to whatever extent he's able to continue to do that, I would bet he's all in.

  25. There is more music out there today than ever before. He's not asking for Fleetwood Mac here, he's asking for someone of similar pull who would provide the relatively insignificant boost to recruiting that doesn't have a domestic violence section in his or her wikipedia page. From what I can tell, we accomplished that when we brought in Rick Ross.

  26. You focus on his downfalls but don’t give any light to the money he gives to his community where he turned an abandoned school into a community center to help keep kids off the street and get jobs for adults and the amount of money he donates to charity to help people that suffer from PTSD and mental health. Plus the amount of stuff he donated to prisons during the pandemic to help all workers for cleaning supplies and masks etc.

I've said it a dozen times. Creighton's bowl game of the year is when they play us. (men's and women's basketball, baseball, etc) doesn't matter the sport. They have the little sister kind of attitude about NU and football. Want to prove they can play with the big sister. ...and they can do it obviously. Just wish we had more pre season games before we play them. Really see us as having the talent, just will it jell early enough? Yes, beat Creighton !

Creighton The team I want to beat the worst is the team we lose to every year. Is it the Yori factor? Yori Beat Creighton Every year. We have not beaten Creighton since Yori went to work for them. We need to beat them. Even if they shoot threes like they usually do against us. We still need to beat them.

Drake will be solid I think but they lost their hc and had one of their better players transfer out as well. Wake lost 2 of their better players from last year i believe too. With the NCAA using the net rankings these look like mostly lower quad 2 and quad 3 with a few quad 4 games which is disappointing to me. For a team that wants to contend for a tournament spot I was hoping for more.
