    Summer Notes

Coach Hoiberg was on Sports Nightly tonight - I was in the car, so going from memory: Guys have about one more week of summer workouts before they send them home for a couple of weeks before school starts First player he brought up (unsolicited) was Breidenbach (somewhat surprisingly) - since being cleared after the injury, he's been very impressive Then he talked about B McGowens - says he just takes over some of the workouts/scrimmages - hit 4 or 5 3s in a row today in practice Then brought up T McGowens and how he's showing great leadership and he's focused on finding the hot hand, like with Bryce in practice today Finally mentioned Verge and how great he's been since arriving - he's a huge addition with losing Banton so late to the draft When asked about Tominaga at the Olympics, he said how great it's been to see him play so well against much older and more seasoned players - and how they're excited to get him on campus and in their offense - because teams will have to guard him all over the floor, it's really going to open things up for everyone else, and they envision a big role for him There will be media availability for players tomorrow - some of the players who didn't speak last week should be available this time Also caught Buzzy on 93.7 earlier today - he also brought up Breidenbach, talked about how impressive he's been and how hard he's working - and that he will play some 4 and some 5 this season - you can just hear it in the coaches' voices how much they like him - my guess is they knew he was good when they recruited him, but now that he's healthy and they can see him up close, it feels like they're getting far more than they expected.

  2. Tominaga with 10 points in this game including a step back Harden-esque 2 pointer for the win! He had a nice lefty scoop layup right before that to put them up 19-16. Great game for Keisei when they needed it the most.

  4. Japan plays Latvia at 8:20 am CDT in quarters Just noticed USA Network is showing the women's quarter game live now, so they may also have the men's game that follows live too.

  5. ...this would be how I set up the conference football structure. My priorities would be maintaining rivalries, competitive balance, and ensuring each team plays each other on a rotating basis no less than once every four years. Structure Four quadrants. Let’s call them NW, NE, SW, and SE for geographic simplicity. NE/SE combine to be the Eastern Division while NW/SW combine to be the Western Division. NW: Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas SW: LSU, TAMU, Ole Miss, Miss St NE: Kentucky, Tennessee, Bama, Auburn SE: Vandy, UGA, Florida, South Carolina Scheduling -Play each team within your quad every year. That’s three games. -Play one protected “rivalry” game annually with a team that is in your division, but not your quad. -Play one game against a different team in your division but not in your quad, on a rotating three-year schedule. -Play one game against a team in each of the opposite division’s quads, on a rotating four-year schedule. Now we're up to seven games total. -8th conference game is TBD, and will be scheduled based on the quad standings at the end of the seven regular conference games. 1st place in NW plays 1st place in SW; 2nd in NW plays 2nd in SW; etc. This will act as a de facto divisional championship game, with the winner of the 1st place NW/SW and NE/SE games advancing to the Conference Championship. Protected rivalry games Texas/TAMU Arkansas/LSU Ole Miss/Texas Miss St/Mizzou Vandy/Tenn Florida/Bama UGA/Auburn Kentucky/USC OK, tell me what I got wrong.

Hip problems because he's in the middle of a growth spurt and he'll be a 7'1" shooting guard when he enrolls? Cool. I'm down.

  8. And a lot of mystery personal foul and holding penalties.

  9. Very true, people like to pile on, but the power of the “N” is still REAL... We can't take that for granted though.

  10. And then they ran down the top 10 most profitable football programs in the country and Nebraska was at #10 at like 95 million dollars. Alabama was at #9 less than a million ahead of DONU.

  11. When I first saw him I thought the same thing. Seemed like a good kid, just kind of went backwards as his college game developed.

    Anyone care

Its basketball enjoy it even if you can't root for someone. And it is high level basketball. I'm sure many of you have watched tons of AAU ball this summer and Olympic basketball talent and style wise is a far superior product. I don't even know if I was watching it live or on tape but Doncic went off for Slovenia v Argentina late last night at my house. It was a fun game to watch. I am currently watching Canada vs Serbia women. Pretty sure this is tape delayed but it's all good if you don't know the final score. And I was crushed when John Thompson's last all college team lost in the 1988 Olympics. When I think, ESPN had March Madness the showed every game, even though most were on delay. They had basketball on 24 hours a day that first Thursday/Friday. I would sit up with a notepad and jot down concepts or sets that I really like from Long Beach State vs. New Mexico at 3:00 in the morning. I was lucky enough to have watched every NC State game in the 83 tournament when they survived and advanced. The number of overtimes they went through was amazing. I'm not even referring to the OP, but I don't get all the schadenfreude in general. Root for someone, watch it for the pure enjoyment of the game, whatever. I don't understand people's strong emotional attachment to rooting against people or teams because somehow they feel they deserve to lose. Unless it's Tottenham. They deserve every bad thing that happens to them They Olympics are bonus basketball season. I just enjoy the games.

  13. The players have said CJ has been the best shooter on the team so far (other than Lakes, since he hasn’t been practicing). They have also commented on Keon and Wilhelm’s shooting ability. Webster was 38% and Trey was 37% from three last year - both very respectable. Lat was 35% and I think we’d all agree that should go up this year. Verge shot 33% last year, but it seems a lot of those attempts were in iso, off the dribble and heavily contested due to the system he played in. Tominaga and Lakes might actually be the best shooters on the roster, although playing time might be hard to come by for them. Having said all that, it is fair to be concerned about three point shooting if for no other reason than we are Nebrasketball.

  14. I'm not saying we shouldn't offer this kid but to say "if he good enough for them, he good enough for us" is a real slap in the face to Nebraska Basketball and what we are trying to do. Just because other schools have offered doesn't automatically mean we need to. There are lots of reasons who you make offers to and when to do it. And I don't think Nebraska should offer kids just because "he's good enough for Iowa and Illinois".
