    Anyone care

I am not an NBA fan, but if these guys are willing to put USA on their chests, I'm willing to back them, especially when several other guys say no thanks. Caught the replay after knowing the result - ugh. Blowing a 7 pt lead and failing to make a shot in the final 4+ minutes was brutal. I think they played relatively hard, but just couldn't buy a bucket. Maybe missed their last 15 shots? Maybe more than that? It was ugly. Played way too unselfish, too many times making the unnecessary extra pass. Hopefully they get it turned around fast, because the preliminary exhibition games did not go well either. I'm not sure France played all that well, honestly, which is also a little scary. They really dominated the last 15 minutes using 2 bigs, though. And they hit at least 3 3s off broken plays/offensive rebounds in the 2nd half. Thought I was watching the Huskers, as it seems like other teams hit about 98% on those scramble 3s against us. First Olympic loss in like 17 years I think? Not good.

  2. They are played outside. Saw a photo of the setup and its spectacular and I can see why someone would think it’s inside.

  3. Japan lost 21-18 to Latvia - Tominaga again was the leading scorer with 9 pts - made 3 of 4 from 1 pt and 3 of 5 from 2 pt, so he definitely got his long range game going. Was minus-3 in +/- - first time he's been minus. Looks like their last 3 games are: Sun 10 pm CDT vs Serbia Mon 1 am CDT vs Russia Tue 1:05 am CDT vs China Looks like they may eliminate 2 of the 8 teams before the medal round? Hard to tell from NBC's lousy website. Quarterfinals start Tuesday around 7 am. Japan is tied with Russia for 6th, and China is 8th, so Japan still has a decent chance at finishing in the top 6.

  4. Japan lost its first game today (tomorrow, next Thursday, whatever it is over there) 21-20 to Netherlands. Tominaga had a huge game, scoring 10 of Japan's 20 points - he made both 1-pt shots and was 4 of 8 from 2-pt shots. Was +1, again leading the team.

...that the USA Olympic team was beaten by France in todays opening game? I don't, and also didn't watch any of the NBA playoffs. Does that make me unpatriotic? And after all, Yvan lead the scorers and he is only 19! (OK, I made up the last part to keep it germane to HHC).

  6. Playmaking, creating shots for others in the halfcourt offense is my concern. It seems we now have the shooters to space the floor and knock down shots. But we have to be able to create shots for those players. Hoiberg's teams at Iowa St. were at their best when they were averaging 16-18 assists per game, with a couple players averaging 3-6 assists. We lose Dalano and his 4 apg (despite what some Husker fans seem to think, Dalano was an excellent passer, and not just in transition). Trey was second on the team with 2.3 apg - he did have a handful of games with 4-5 assists after Dalano moved to the bench. Trey and Alonzo are not pure point guards, but they will have to fill the role of making plays for others. I don't think Bryce will be that player as a freshman. I can also see us playing out of the post more and taking advantage of Derrick and Wilhelm's vision and passing abilities. We know Hoiberg will find ways to put players in position to get good looks, but it's on the players to make the right reads and execute.

  7. This season I expect our defense to be top 25-caliber. We were top 40 last year and replacing Thor and Teddy with Verge and Bryce could/should help. Love Thor, but he really struggled to stay in front of people on the perimeter. Teddy, most of the time, had little interest in playing defense. When Kobe King decided not to enroll at Nebraska, I was concerned about our perimeter defense against the more athletic guards in the Big Ten. Trey is really the only reliable perimeter defender we had and most teams have at least two quick, athletic guards on the court at all times. Verge is known for being a pesky defender - Trey calls him a "dog" on that end of the court. Lat has already commented on Bryce's defensive versatility. I love the thought of having two guards like Trey and Verge to harass opposing guards in the backcourt. I'm sure Doc does too. Doc did a pretty amazing job with the defense last year, considering what he had to work with. Derrick is an underrated defensive anchor in the middle. He reminds me of Draymond Green in how he quarterbacks the defense from the paint. He and an improved Eduardo should mean we'll always have a solid defensive presence down low, which will allow Trey, Verge and Bryce to take more gambles on the perimeter.

    Britt Prince

No doubt the offers are just beginning for Britt Prince, but the final chapter in her recruiting (class of 2024) is still a long way from being written. She should have her pick of where she wants to continue her education and play basketball. Bottom line is, I think we are good enough to attract talented players, particularly in-state (perhaps unlike Taylor McCabe when we didn't know what kind of team we were going to have last season and she committed to Iowa). Well, I think the Huskers demonstrated their characteristic "Grit, NO Quit" last season under Coach Williams, et al; and I think we'll be even more pleased this season. She seems to be very good at developing each players' maximum potential and instilling 'A Will to Win'. Things are looking up for Husker Athletics. I'm particularly impressed with our new AD, Trev Alberts, and believe we are on the cusp of some very good things, including WBB.

    Britt Prince

Also being a head coach at Elkhorn North it would be a lot easier for her to attend her daughters games if she was at Nebraska.

    2021 MLB Draft

True, unless they're just ready to move on and don't care about signing bonus. Like Hallmark already being graduated. He'd have no leverage in the draft next year, so if a fourth-year junior like him is ready to move on, they might as well sign as a free agent and go, even if the bonus money sucks. Coming back on partial scholarship and racking up more student loans to take graduate classes may not sound all that appealing to guys versus starting a pro career, even with a lousy or no signing bonus. Thought I read Houston was Hallmark's only actual offer, which is kind of surprising. Not sure what the scouts don't like about his game. He is a little undersized, but he showed good power all year long, along with great speed and defense. I know we have a few other fourth-year juniors who would've signed no questions asked (like Wynne) if they had been drafted. So I think they'd at least listen to free agent offers. At this point, I'd guess we don't lose anyone else, but if some random team has several draft picks who choose not to sign, they might reach out at the last minute next week. Really a strange time for guys looking to turn pro with the cut back in the number of rounds in the draft and the cuts in the minor league teams. Has to be hard to determine the best path forward for a lot of these guys.

  14. Loved how they raised ticket prices by about 20% (at least for my seats) per ticket after the two worst seasons in program history and sticking with the team through the pandemic. Was kinda disappointed to see that, honestly.

    Alonzo Verge Jr.

I was told this week Banton was expected to come off the bench to run the offense. When Banton left, Verge was brought in to cover Banton's role. Kobe will be sliding down the bench. Expect Trey, Verge, and Kobe to be running the offense this season. Also, Verge will only stay one year and ensures more scholarships for next year.
