Yeah, once again, way off topic. First, I will admit that I am not a big fan of Phil. But the dude played a tough mental tournament this weekend and put a lot of 20's, 30's and 40 year olds to shame. A big shout out to us oldies but goodies. And great win Lefty!

  3. Pro/Rel within USL is a stated goal of the league (heard an interview with one of the executives a year or two ago on this) and it makes sense because there is quite a bit of inequity at the Championship level. Some of the USL 1 teams (Omaha, Greenville, North Texas, Madison) are easily better than more than a few Championship teams (like SKC2, Tacoma, Portland 2, Los Dos, etc) Probably won't happen in MLS though unless the owners want to expand to about 40 teams then split the league in to two tiers, but that's probably a long shot at this point.

  4. While way off-topic for this NUBB board, I LOVE That there is a passionate discussion about soccer here. I think the the next wave of MLS is starting right now with Omaha Union and my local FC Tucson building a true local tier of the soccer pyramid with their own supporters groups and with players like Tucson's Long and Toia, moving up to MLS. I know promotion and relegation are Euro traditions that the economics of MLS are not prepared for, but I suspect that when USL 2, USL 1, and USL Championship mature, they may move to having some form of it the only questions are will there be space in MLS someday to add teams, it's already slated to be one of the largest (by number of teams) leagues in the world when the current expansions finish. I wonder about a two league system like the old MLB structure where Eastern and Western Conferences are separate until; the playoffs, or a seasonal system where winter region teams play the current MLS schedule and warmer weather teams play a schedule like the rest of the world. One last note,Tucson hosts the (Sponsor) Cup every spring and brings multiple MLS clubs and some USL clubs together for days of preseason matches... "A total of six Visit Tucson Sun Cup matches will be played from April 3 through April 10 at Kino North Stadium, including Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs Colorado Rapids, LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake, and Sporting Kansas City. This will be the 11th consecutive season that MLS teams will have been hosted and played preseason games in Tucson. The MLS matchups will be streamed on FCtucson.com." It is a ton of fun to just watch back-to-back-to-back soccer for a week in Tucson in March. (avg March high 75, low 49)

Buzzy Caruthers was on 93.7 today - said Breidenbach will not be delayed in arriving in Lincoln because of the injury. He'll go through all of the film study, etc, with the others until he's ready to do the physical stuff. They won't push it with his recovery so they can have him healthy coming out of summer.

Congrats. I was hoping for 3 out of 4 best case scenario. Taking all 4 plus winning the title. No worries over this next weekend. Plus, we get to play our last series in front of fans welcoming their title. In regionals, I think we can hang with most teams offensively. I worry about the good teams not giving us extra outs. We have taken advantage of teams giving us extra outs. Our starters could be worrisome too. Our bullpen is good enough to also hang, but starters have to get us outs. We cannot overwork the bullpen. Having said all that, it'll be nice to compete in a regional again. Especially after 2019, being 1 out away from a regional final appearance.

  10. *Says Hoiberg's biggest strength, over his Xs and Os, recruiting, etc... is that he can make any player feel like they're a god and over perform their natural capabilities. *Abdelmassih also tested positive for COVID in January, still not 100%, still doesn't have taste or smell. (sure he hope he gets some help here soon?) *Not trying to make excuses, but COVID was the worst thing that could have happened to this team. He feels he puts so much time into creating relationships with these kids, that when he couldn't meet with them in the offices, or hang out with them, he felt he wasn't doing his job and what he promises kids/parents. Only practiced 60% of the time they usually practice. *Says we played some of the best basketball in the conference in our last 7 game stretch. Looked like what it was supposed to look like. High assist numbers, etc... *Guys can feel it... Kobe Webster had no intentions of coming back, but said after the year he could feel we were so close and loves the vibe of the team. *Said Lat Mayen needs to have the best off-season. He's a big who is versatile and unlike many other players in the nation. (I would kinda disagree, feel like LM is who he is, and the shots just need to go in. Delano Banton is who I would say needs to have a great one, if we want to be really good and he actually wants to play). HALFTIME (Have to go back to pretending to work)

  12. Seems like another wise move by Fred to me. From both a basketball and publicity standpoint it establishes the national perception of a "cutting edge" program. Now we just have to get some "Ws". Plus, I used to like the old Lum's franchise on "O" street back in the day, so there's that.

  14. The Boys in Blue looked good again this weekend. I'm surprised how much productivity we are getting up top from Pulido + the Island of Misfit Toys. Pulido is making everyone around him look like superstars, which is much-needed with Johnny on the shelf. Also, shoutout to Ilie for being a rock the past couple matches while playing out of position at CB.

  16. The trickiest thing I see getting in the way of pro/rel here in the US is money. Owners aren’t going to want to make less by going down, losing interest or fans and the stuff that comes with that. Many of these clubs down have the 100 year histories of European clubs. It’s a large hill to climb and losing any revenue or fan support by being relegated would cripple smaller clubs. I totally agree with what you are saying about inequity in the second and third tier.

  18. While it’ll never happen... I think the year before the first promotion/relegation year could be just a relegation year with no promotion. This could reduce the size of our top tier league while also leaving some teams hungry for wins. I would love to see prom/releg in the US. I know some are worried about what that would do to the average fan... but let’s face it... if the average fan is watching MLS, they are probably following soccer elsewhere as well in the world. Money... well that’s a whole nother story.

You're assuming the bluebirds are making a regional. They have a bit of work to do. NU won't complain about playing anyone, but I don't think we want any part of Arkansas. This feels like it might finally be DVH's year to break through. With the way NU is playing in May, someone else deserves to take that bullet. I nominate Michigan.

Nope, they're not. The way they play, this team is a huge pain in the ass for opponents. Plus they're pretty cocky and good at getting under the opponents' skin. Of course, with no non-con games, who knows what'll happen in the NCAAs. But I would not want to play these guys in a regional. Will be interesting to see how they play things vs Mich. Maybe a few position guys will be getting a day off for a change, they'll give their starting pitchers some shortened pitch counts, etc. Kind of the exact opposite of what happens with a conference tournament. Of course, as hot as they are, the coaches may want to just not change anything and try to keep the momentum going. It's only 3 games, whereas you could play 5 or 6 in a conf tournament, so I might opt to try to stay hot, while keeping starting pitchers a little shorter than usual, around 70-80 pitches. By the way, I saw today Coach Childress is out at Texas A&M. Sounds like a mutual parting, although I know it hasn't been a good relationship for a few years now. I'm sure TAM will be going after far bigger fish than Coach Bolt, so doubt there's anything to worry about there.

  27. In another month and a half, the NIL will basically make this legal for everyone other than coaches. At least the money changing hands should now occur above board (and be taxable, of course). Going to be a rough time for bag men. They better have their resumes in order. I'm looking at you, school 60 miles to the east.

    Summer Notes

It certainly doesn't help the player's chances of jumping right into big minutes the following season, but it's tough to tell a player what's actually required to have early success. All new players think they're ready ... then they have their first real practice/scrimmage. It's also tough to convince a young player that any short-term gain of playing in tournaments like this probably will make the long-term gain take longer because they missed the summer with their future teammates. However, no coach is going to tell a player he can't represent his country in these tournaments, or that'll be the last international player he has a chance to recruit. So I guess it's just part of the deal when you're recruiting/signing international players. I guess it's better than the alternative of recruiting international players who aren't good enough to be part of these teams.
