2021 Transfer SZN

I'd chalk this up to length and Doc Sadler's scheme. We went from KenPom #142 to #20 this last year in the Team Height category. We took away the paint at the expense of teams putting up 3s on us. However, teams overall shot poorly from 3 against us which I'd attribute to length and luck. Having spent hours looking at styles on KenPom i can easily discern that this was the most Sadler-esque defense that Hoiberg has ever run and also happens to be the highest rated one he's ever run.5 points -

I think we’re going to like him. The consistent thing that everyone says about him is he defends and plays hard 100% of the time. We like guys who defend and play hard all the time. Sounds simple, but we’ve had more guys the last two years that don’t do those two things than I can ever remember. So I’m going to expect a taller Caleb Walker and if the scoring potential ever comes to fruition then look out.5 points -

Something else worth pointing out about Baylor (apropos to this thread) is that, of their top 6 players in terms of minutes played (the guys getting roughly 20 minutes or more), 4 of those 6 players were transfers, including the top 2 minutes/scoring guys. Auburn, UNC-Ashville, Baylor, Baylor, Presbyterian, UNLV. Those are the schools at which the national champs' top 6 players started their college careers. And when Scott Drew went after players in the portal, he clearly prioritized guards who could shoot. Macio Teague was a ~44% career 3-pt shooter in 2 years at UNC-A. Flagler was a >38% 3-pt shooter in one season at Presbyterian and he improved that by 5% in his sophomore year at Baylor.4 points -

Everything I have been told is that Breidenbach is expected to play Day 1. Mayen is expected to start, but he will be pulled if the shots are not falling. Both are expected to be stretch 4s so Bryce has room to make plays.3 points

I think Tyon would be an intriguing option at the 3. 6’7” with handles and crazy athleticism. If Toney McCray could dribble, he’d be Tyon. Still think we need a true PG (though I’m not as worried about Trey and Bryce handling those duties as some), but Tyon would give us a better Shamiel who could play and guard the 2-4. He’s an elite athlete and can get to the rim and block shots. Don’t know much else.3 points -

I believe Tim Miles was a Great Hire for Nebraska; but then again I wouldn't know since I only really began paying attention to the MBB program after he was hired as HC. Miles brought a sense of excitement, i.e. a new beginning, to the program; Right from the Start. He didn't denigrate the players he had inherited, rather he made the most of, and got the most out of the players he had. He made household names (in Nebraska at least), of Kye, Peltz, & Menke (not to mention names like Ubel, Almeida, Gallegos & Talley, but they were already household names.) I don't know where he found the talent he did, Nebraska certainly wasn't on the radar of many high-level recruits. Yet he Did Find them, and gave us a lot names that provided us with a lot of excitement; names like Petteway, Tai, Shavon, Benny, Roby, among so many others. Who can forget the sinking feeling when the Huskers dropped their first four matches in the B1G in successive games in 2012/13; only to finish 11-7 in the conference, and reach the NCAAs. Miles inaugurated PBA for us; We've consistently had some of the highest attendance records in the B1G. Who could ever forget 'No Sit Sunday?' MIles helped position us for a great future; with a High-Visibility, Name, Coach who is able to attract Top Level Recruits to the program Tim Miles will fit in just fine at San Jose State; I wish him the same degree of success that he had at Nebraska!2 points

The way I look at Tyon Grant-Foster is that right now Nebraska has 2 scholarship players on the roster that won’t count against the scholarship limit, so I think Hoiberg has a little more freedom to take a chance on a player or two like Grant-Foster. Nebraska already has a pretty solid 9-man rotation for next season and I don’t expect them to bring in anyone elite enough to knock any of these starting 5 out of the starting lineup. And Hoiberg has 2-3 scholarships available to build that up to a legit 10-man rotation. Starting Lineup: 1- Trey McGowens (6’4”) 2- Bryce McGowens (6’6”) 3- CJ Wilcher (6’5”) 4- Lat Mayen (6’9”) 5- Derrick Walker (6’8”) Bench: 1- Kobe Webster (6’0”) 2- Transfer (Tyon Grant-Foster (6’7”))? 3- Delano Banton (6’9”) 4- Wilhelm Breidenbach (6’9”) 5- Eduardo Andre (6’10”) I think, at this point, Hoiberg is recruiting for depth to raise the talent level of the bench. If a guy like Grant-Foster ends up developing into a star and working his way into a major role for the 2022-2023 season, then great, but for depth, he could also end up being a much more athletic and better shooting version of Stevenson on this roster and to me that’s ok too. I also expect another scholarship to officially open up, so I believe that if Nebraska were to bring in Grant-Foster, they will still be able to add 2 more player to the roster over this off season.2 points -

And at least the potential on offense is there, hopefully our staff can unlock it. When Bill Self says this about you, you know at least he's showed some pretty impressive flashes on offense. “[Grant-Foster] makes hard shots, gets real baskets," Self said. "He did some things that, without going into too much detail, we haven't had somebody that could go get their own [shot] like he can when he's good in a long time.” “Yesterday, [Grant-Foster] got on a roll that we haven't had anybody get on maybe in years,” Self said during a media availability Thursday.2 points -

I agree it seems like a bit of a head scratcher. I suppose we are basing it off his 2nd year in juco (Indian Hills) where he was supposed to be the nations #1 juco reruit. He played with Tomas Woldetensae (Virginia, who we recruited) . I'm guessing that is where we first saw him. With jucos everyone wants them to be ready immediately, but I think that most of them still need a year to get acclimated to D1. If he has the versatility to guard the 2, 3 or 4 slot, that would be a great start. His outside shooting does look to be a problem. He can get to the rim though.2 points

Spot on. High upside, and got minutes at KU. We'd all be through the roof if he was coming here 1 year ago. Last guy we got from KU that averaged less than 3 ppg ended honorable mention All-B1G and had a cup of coffee in the NBA (I won't mention his name haha). Type of gamble you have to make when you're the Nebraska's of CBB.2 points -

Nebraska better plan on winning the Big Ten. There are no guarantees that the B1G will qualify more than the regular season league champion, especially without non-league games as well as the lack of a post-season conference tourney champ in 2021.2 points -

To be fair, we have recruited several transfer point guards. None of them are coming here, for whatever reason. The staff apparently doesn’t like any of the realistic options that are left out there. I’m of the mindset that we shouldn’t take a guy just to take a guy.1 point -

"What we didn't have at Nebraska was enough three-point shooting. And that is so vital to the game today; the three-point shot and defending the three-point shot is crucial. ... it's something you certainly have to understand and recruit to also. ... Some of those role guys that you used to have who could be defensive stoppers, quite frankly it's hard for them to have an important role unless they can make outside shots. They have to be an offensively efficient person; they have to make those threes."1 point -

A lineup of Trey, Bryce, CJ, Tyon and Walker/Andre would be versatile, athletic and tough defensively. For some reason fans still like their "4" to be 6'9"+. But our 6'9"+ guys with subpar athleticism really struggle on the defensive end. Baylor's starting lineup: 6-2 6-3 6-5 6-5 6-10 Gonzaga: 6-4 6-5 6-5 6-7 6-10 Michigan, Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Houston, etc. All their lineups look like this. There's no chance for Lat and Dalano to stay in front of Corey Kispert, Joe Wieskamp, Isaiah Livers, Jalen Wilson.... Tyon gives us a nice option to have a guy both long and athletic enough to stick with guys like this. We had a top 35 defense last year, which is pretty incredible. We played very good team defense for most of the year. I think Tyon will make us even better on that end.1 point -

OK, let me put it this way: Tyon Grant-Foster is like a slightly taller version of Akol Arop. Except with good knees. And better ball skills. And (from the sounds of things) can play defense without getting lost. And if he was good enough for Bill Self to recruit, then who am I to question it? Let's reel him in, I guess.1 point -

Well, juco recruiting had him as the #1 juco recruit last year, ahead of Teddy Allen (#8) and Lat Mayen (#18). So, if we land him, it'd be like swapping out the #8 juco recruit for the #1 juco recruit. At least we'd be moving in the right direction there.1 point -

Interesting note that they had not 1, not 2, not 3, but 4!!!!! Big 10 teams in there. I don't think there's a chance in hell the Big 10 gets 4 bids. Hell, we rarely get 4 in a regular year. Baseball America has them in the same regional as a 2 seed. I do think the Big 10 could get 2 and MAYBE 3 teams in, but 3 is probably max and that might be pushing it.1 point -

If we hope to make a jump in the standings or near .500, Bryce McGowens needs to step in day one and be a "difference maker." Breidenbach also needs to be more than just a guy off the bench. I like where Andre is headed, and I believe it's important to build the foundation of the program with High School talent. Especially if you're hoping to achieve long term sustained success.1 point -
