    Next seasons players

I will never understand this type of thinking. There are few people anywhere as invested in the fortunes of the Husker hoops program as Thor. We need more guys on the team like him, not less, IMO.

  2. Ughhh. The lack of court smarts and/or discipline is just a bit maddening. Oh well, I guess we are earning a higher draft choice...wait, WHAT, that stinks.

  3. Just another opportunity for these guys to understand each other and to understand what it takes to play in the Big Ten. Hopefully we'll have enough talent and experience next year to turn a few of these losses into victories, to take a few more games down to the wire, to not get thrown around like rag dolls in the paint, to make the big plays in a clutch moments, to not wilt when the going gets tough. I saw fight tonight, but that's about it. Just keep sawin' wood.

    Why the hate

Look at the numbers I put above. Teddy is really effective off the ball as a catch-and-shoot player. He's very good running off screens. His most common play type this season (nearly a quarter of his possessions) is as a spot-up player where he's catching and shooting or attacking closeouts. A good point guard would allow Nebraska to take better advantage of his abilities in all those areas. Better shooters around him would create more space for him to work with inside the arc. He's also been a noticeably more willing passer since he came back from his benching, getting into the paint and kicking out to guys on the perimeter quite often the last handful of games. He is a good pick-and-roll player. A legit roll man threat would both allow him to take advantage of that part of his game more and it would create more opportunities for himself or to kick to a corner shooter with the roll man's gravity. Heading into Thursday, Synergy had classified just 31 of his possessions as true isolation plays (8.3%). He's also not doing particularly well with the post touches so Nebraska can probably just take those out of the game plan.

  8. Lat tied for most minutes tonight, and he took 3 shots, and was 0-1 from 3. It's not like we aren't running actions for him, I see us trying to set him up, but teams know he's a shooter so they play tight coverage on him in part because they know he's not much of a threat to drive. Some shooters need only a tiny window to get a shot off, but not Lat I'm afraid. For his shot to have a chance he needs space to set up, step into it and release. Whenever he tries a quick pull of the trigger it misses badly. I love Lat and will always root for him, but I'm just not seeing him as Big Ten level talent. :(

  9. To be fair, Illinois did a great job of taking Teddy & Lat completely out of the game ... especially Frazier. They had us scouted perfectly. Now it is possible that even B1G football refs would've thrown a few holding flags on Illinois tonight for the action away from the ball, but again, if you can get away with it...

  10. You know the officiating is bad when there's a whistle on a drive 20 feet from the hoop and at least 2 guys on each team look over with their hands up - "I didn't do it." Nobody on the floor knows what's a foul tonight. Have to say watching Illinois get miffed about how physical the game is always makes me laugh. No one grabs, pushes & bumps on defense in the league more than Illinois ... and they've even toned it down quite a bit from a few years ago. But when you can get away with it, you might as well do it.

  11. You see how ready-made Cockburn was for the Big Ten, and now watching Hunter Dickinson, and I yearn for someone who can just come in as a freshman and be physically ready and skilled enough to compete against these guys. We have Eduardo Andre, and he has great upside, but it's a project. For Nebrasketball, it's always a project.

Teddy Allen is scoring 0.967 points per possession, which Synergy classifies as "very good" and in the 73rd percentile. He's "very good" both in the halfcourt and in transition. He's in the 72nd percentile or better in each of his top four play types (spot up = 1.033 PPP, 72%; transition = 1.173 PPP, 74%; off screen = 1.128, 76%; P&R ball-handler = 0.921, 82%). He's also in the 64th percentile in isolation after that Penn State game, scoring 0.867 PPP ("good"). Teddy is above average at almost everything he does offensively. The man-to-man defense and turnover issues are a problem, but there are a lot of talented players that struggle in those areas yet still succeed. If you can't find a way to win with that, that's probably more of a you problem than a Teddy one. He's the least of Nebraska's problems, especially with the way he's been playing the last several games. I think people get too caught up on the 1, 2 or 3 plays a game that look really bad. He's still a net positive even with a bad shot here and there, and honestly, some of those "bad shots" have a better chance of going in than a lot of the other things Nebraska has been doing on offense. Between shot attempts, free-throw attempts, assists and turnovers, Teddy's using up roughly 20 possessions per game. Nebraska is averaging 74.4 possessions per game. Other guys have plenty of opportunities to stay involved.

  20. Oh, kinda. Shotmaking always makes the difference. But, yeah, I thought Nebraska'd beat NW, and potentially lose to Minnesota. It's based on how the teams play and what they're good at. Doesn't help not having Cravens, of course. Minnesota doesn't get 11 offensive rebounds if she plays. Whalen has the right ideas. It's gonna be whether she gets the great players in her own state - she hasn't done real well there - and whether, after she gets them, they're gonna be able to play for her.

  23. 1st, you will never convince me that 10th year senior Trent Frazier shouldn't have had 2 technicals. How one of those was a bench T is indefensible. However, with Michelle's dork nephew reffing, nothing is surprising at this point. 2nd, I can't believe how poorly we value the basketball and possessions in general. Our better players make some of the dumbest, head-scratching decisions / turnovers of any team I can think of. For having some talented players and a tremendous head coach, this is mind-boggling and very concerning. Lastly, I hope Shamiel continues to show improvement. Physically and athletically, there's no reason he shouldn't be one of our better players and potential starter. His decision-making is borderline atrocious often, but he can just plain and simply do things that some of our other rotation players cannot. Let's hope his improved play continues.

  24. Atleast we are starting to see some improvement on a game by game basis from allen, mcgowens, Stevenson, Walker, and Andre. It’s only spurts and there’s still WTF moments but you can atleast see something with those 5 in my opinion. I don’t think it happens but I’d love to see Stevenson start over Lat. Stevenson gives us more on both ends of the court and w no one consistently setting Lat up he’s basically a zero for us right now on both ends. If we coulda got Lat back in 2017 outta high school I think he really could been a weapon in miles system w Watson setting him up but on this team he’s just an odd piece. Cockburn probably isn’t gonna be an in demand NBA player so we likely get to face him For atleast 2 more years, isn’t that fun.

  25. We've had countless turnovers the past two games just dribbling the ball. That needs to stop. No excuse for it on the D1 level. The grabbing by Illinois on the defensive end was atrocious. It really affected our game. I don't remember seeing it much in the 1st match-up, but may have a lot to do with why we struggled tonight. Rebounding in the 2nd half was poor. I think Illinois didn't worry about us running and started crashing the boards. It's kind of double edged sword. In order to run we need to send people down the court, but that leaves no one to rebound the ball.

  26. Bardo is a dog shit announcer. In sure he played a lot of post defense in his time as PG at Illinois but I’d love to hear how he would suggest defending cockburn when your giving up 70 pounds and he’s allowed to lead w his elbow every time he catches it in the post. Is there a worst call in all of sports than the double tech? It’s just a weak bail out call refs use when they don’t see what happened.

  28. Good: We shot almost 70% from FT line. Bad: Outscored 16-2 in transition - our transition defense is killing us. With as good as we are in 1/2 court defense, we have to find a way to fix the transition defense. It's not like we're poor in transition defense because we're crashing the offensive glass either. Need to cut down on the live ball turnovers & figure out how to stop the ball much, much better. We gave up 28 pts combined in transition and in 2nd chances tonight, and it's the same number we gave up to Penn St Tuesday - that's a crazy high number. Our 1/2 court defense vs the first shot is good enough to give us a chance to win most nights, even as much as we struggle on offense. Again, Illinois had us scouted well here - they pushed the ball regularly, even when it wasn't really there, knowing how bad we have been lately in transition defense, and it worked.

  29. Andre compares favorably with Mikki Moore, in fact he's 25 lbs bigger than Mikki was as a freshman and has had a better freshman year. (Mikki flashed some talent his freshman year in the Kansas game but rarely played.) Keita, I would say, compares favorably to Derrick Chandler. And they'll be in the same class. But they're not the Royce White - Georges Niang type of players, so it's a bit of a surprise.

  31. It seems to me that bulk gets away with a lot in the Big Ten. Subtle moves by really strong players can create so much space that it becomes really difficult to respond. And if Kelly Pfieffer is on the whistle, it's tough to respond without getting rung up.

  36. Illinois is obviously better than we are. Neither team played good basketball in the first half. I have a cousin who’s a D1 ref, so I usually give the officials the benefit of the doubt. They have a tough job, and they’re generally a lot better at their job than fans, players and coaches give them credit for. That said, the refs have been atrocious tonight and it’s definitely affected the score.

  40. Hahaha, I was going to point out part of the flaw in your Melo comparison but then I hurt my eyes and finally got out the magnifying glass and saw your addendum. I've often thought of the Melo comparison with Teddy. However, what we saw last game was Teddy becoming a facilitator and making some very good passes that led to easy points. He's also been shooting efficiently and north of 50%. Now, if he's distributing the ball appropriately (i.e. not being a ball stopping offensive flow killer like Melo), what are we really complaining about? Can Teddy carry this team on his own...no. Can he be an important piece to a rebuilding team, absolutely. We seem quick to anoint Bryce McGowens as a program savior (heck, Fred implied this himself) but I'm not seeing him as a generational talent. Hopefully Bryce is another important piece to the puzzle and if you accumulate enough pieces, we will turn the corner. I just don't get why we're expecting Teddy to carry this team by himself. Outside of a Lebron or KD type talent, you need to surround talented players with other talented players. Teddy is a talented player, Bryce seems to be a talented player but we need to add more talented players and specifically pieces that fit the right roles (i.e. spot up shooters, and a PG who can distribute). It's really not that complicated.

To add even more to this, Teddy is an excellent pick-and-roll player as both a scorer and passer(1.109 PPP, 85th percentile) and he's also excellent as a catch-and-shoot player (1.304 PPP, 88th percentile). He doesn't have to dominate the ball or isolate all the time. Get him a competent roll man (Walker's filled this roll nicely) and a point guard who can consistently set him up for jumpers and you've got a really dynamic offensive player on your hands. That being said, he's also one of the best off-the-dribble shooters in the Big Ten, so...
