    Isabelle Bourne...

She talks about her position in her post Penn State Game interview. She's getting used to the three; but is more comfortable in and prefers the Four! https://huskers.com/news/2021/2/22/womens-basketball-bourne-named-national-player-of-the-week.aspx

  2. Per Synergy, he has 13 shooting possessions as the pick-and-roll ball-handler. It hasn't gone well: 7 points, 2-7 FG, 1 foul, 5 turnovers. Tack on his passing possessions (six of them) and you don't get any more points, just 0-5 FG and another turnover.

  3. It hasn't been great, but it could always be worse. It's been a bit of a hot mess, and that's no joke. I'm just thankful that NU could come back after a 27-day break mid-season. I hope they can knock off a few more teams yet in 2020-21. The past two seasons under Freddy have left much to be desired. Lately I have noticed glimpses of the "Hoiberg Hoops" I had originally hoped for when he was hired nearly 2 years ago. I have a lot of faith in the long-term prognosis for Fred & Co. Let's see the product next season with the full PBA experience once again. Keep the faith, Husker football is a much bigger funk than Nebrasketball. More is expected of NU on the gridiron than on the court. Frankly I wish both 'back' like in the 90s, it was great fun back then. But, alas, "now" is far cry from those days in Lincoln. Maybe one day these top 2 Husker men's programs can get going on a positive trajectory with Frost & Hoiberg. Whether that happens or not, I'll still be a fan.

  4. This perfectly sums up how I explain nebrasketball struggles to people who just don't understand the pain.

  5. This is absolutely something the football program is working through. (Purdue is too.) The defensive coaching, talent and toughness is probably too high, at this point, to play UCF/WKU football in the Big Ten unless you have Ohio State talent. Michigan made a move toward a spread, tempo offense in 2019 and got worse. Maryland sort of runs it, and is very hit and miss with it. I think the Hoiberg tempo/3s approach is working in the Big Ten at Iowa. Creighton and Alabama would be top 5 teams in the Big Ten, I think. Of Creighton's starting 5, one guy - Ballock - was a top 100 player. Nebraska starts 2 Top 100 guys. The difference is time playing together and shotmaking. The first may well inform the latter, eventually.

  7. I went back to read some of the recruiting posts for Kendall Coley. https://hailvarsity.com/womens-basketball/kendall-coleys-road-to-nebraska/ This stood out: I had also forgotten about this:

    Isabelle Bourne...

She is playing with a lot of confidence. Bourne is benefiting from Kate’s presence in half court offense but I love the way she runs the court and her variety of post moves. The 4 suits her more than the 3. Happy for the young lady to get some recognition. Post season honors should at least include Honorable Mention All B1G.

  10. Penn St. Info Head Coach: Jim Ferry Location: University Park, PA Conference: B1G Nickname: Nittany Lions Mascot: The Nittany Lion Conference Record: 4-11 Typical Rotation Depth: 8 Spread: Penn State by 6 KenPom rank: 34 Players to watch: Myreon Jones On this balanced scoring Penn St team Jones leads the team in 3pt attempts and makes, hitting 39% on the season. Jones also leads the team in scoring. Last time out vs Nebraska led the team with 18 points but took 20 shots to do so. Roster points PG SG SF PF C Pct 1 5 Jamari Wheeler 6-1 170 Sr 0 Myreon Jones 6-3 180 Jr 12 Izaiah Brockington 6-4 200 Jr 1 Seth Lundy 6-6 219 So 21 John Harrar 6-9 240 Sr 17.5 2 5 Jamari Wheeler 6-1 170 Sr 0 Myreon Jones 6-3 180 Jr 12 Izaiah Brockington 6-4 200 Jr 2 Myles Dread 6-4 220 Jr 21 John Harrar 6-9 240 Sr 17.5 With the departures of Mike Watkins and Lamar Stevens Penn St isn't running much offense through the post Seth Lundy as taken over the 4 spot from Stevens; his 3pt shooting has fallen off this year. Functions as one of the few shot blockers on the team Brockington is a lock down defender who mostly shoots inside the arc PG Jamari Wheeler spearheads this ball hawking defense that generates a lot of steals. He's a pure point guard in the sense that he barely shoots so you could see defensively challenged Kobe Webster playing some big minutes tonight Myles Dread still hasn't improved on his freshman numbers like this team would expect and often slots as an undersized forward for this small Penn St squad. Binghamton transfer Sam Sessoms is interesting as I wonder if the team might have been better off in the future had he redshirted. The high scoring combo guard functions as the PG when Wheeler is off the court and as an undersized SG when they play together. The Philly native is 2nd on the team in assists and 4th in scoring coming off the bench. John Harrar generates contact, getting to the line a ton while also racking up plenty of fouls on his own. Is one of 5 PSU players averaging over 9 points a game and leads the team in rebounds. Forward Trent Buttrick backs up Harrar but his poor finishing ability and defending makes him a substandard replacement The Skinny: Penn St and Pat Chambers had built something in Happy Valley, being among the elites in the conference over the prior 3 years in KenPom ranking and on their way to the first NCAA appearance of Chambers' tenure. (Projected as a 6 seed by some) Covid-19 hits and there goes the tourney. Chambers mouth finally writes enough checks he cannot cash and just before the season starts Chambers is gone. Current Penn St assistant and former Duquesne and LIU Brooklyn coach Jim Ferry takes over for the team in November. While Ferry has the title of interim you have to wonder if he has a good shot at retaining the job of the 5th most important sport at the school. Stylistically at this point I'd attribute Penn State's change in play and performance to the change in personnel as opposed to coaching style. It's slightly shocking given Jim Ferry's past and the lack of size on this roster that this team doesn't play faster. Penn St doesn't shoot all that well nor do they get to the FT line often. Their lack of size makes them vulnerable inside and no doubt the Huskers will spread them out in order to drive the lane. Penn St lives off of extra possessions, aggressively winning the turnover and rebounding games and playing with the sort of control Hoiberg wants to limit careless turnovers. Last time out, Nebraska turned the ball over 16 times and gave up 13 offensive rebounds though managed to win as the Nittany Lions shot a putrid 21-65 from the court. Look for both teams to have relatively better offensive games in what should be another close fought struggle where the winner is the team that fades the least at the end. Prediction: Nebraska 71 - Penn St 68

  11. Have to disagree on potential with Doc running the defense. He loves to double team all the time and it's easy to see if coming. Good teams and players just expose that and get wide open looks. Our guys are chasing all the time to get back and defend the 3 point line. Good shooting teams will light us up every night with Doc's defense.

    Isabelle Bourne...

Since everybody is in love with Issie for post season honors, what about Sam. She has carried the team on her back a few times this year. Don't think Nebraska is good enough to garner two spots.

  14. Agree in football for sure. In basketball, Beilein's 5-out was dominating the B1G before he left for the league. Iowa does it as well, though they typically don't recruit great defenders and sort of live with that identity. Their defense is atrocious this year but their offense is remarkable. Shotmaking is a huge deal, but our defense has more potential than most teams with Doc at the helm.

  15. I think Bourne at a minimum with be 2nd team B1G. Depending these last three games if she continues at the level she has payed at maybe sneak in on the 1st team. They have 10 players on each 1st and 2nd teams.

    PENN STATE GAME DAY THREAD

This excerpt is from a Hail Varsity article on January 12, 2021........ (haven't seen a mention since) Trinity Brady, a sophomore guard who started NU’s first two games out on the wing (whose spot Bourne filled once she went down), has missed the last eight games with an ankle injury. She was previously in a boot but shed that in recent weeks. Williams didn’t put a timetable on anything, but intimated that she’s close. “She’s getting closer every day,” Williams said. “We’re hopeful that real shortly she’ll be able to return to the court.” Brady hasn’t played since Dec. 6. In her 48 minutes to start the year, she scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and got her hands on four steals. She’s a versatile defender Williams can deploy on the wing and lets Bourne play her more natural forward position.

  17. Feels like he's figured out how to exist in our offense and while there are still WTF plays he makes it seems like he's been making better decisions. He's an elite finisher so it's really about how he ends up in the paint with the ball; bulldozing from the 3pt line ends with mixed results. Anyone know how much we pick and roll with Sham?

  18. does anyone have any insight regarding Trinity Brady? has she been practicing? i thought it was about a month 1/2 ago coach stated she was "day to day"---or maybe she said "close"? wonder if she had a setback? it is so late in the season i really don't expect her to be back. would she qualify for a med r/s? didn't she miss the last few games her freshman year because of tendonitis?

  19. Shamiel in 8 games since the return to play: 7.0 PPG, 48.8% FG (30% 3FG), 61.9% FT, 3.6 RPG, 0.5 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.5 BPG, 2.1 TPG, 16.6 MPG. Expand that to 30 MPG (for comparison's sake) and that's 12.6 PTS, 6.5 RPG, 0.9 APG, 2.0 SPG, 0.9 BPG, 3.8 TPG. That's pretty much on par with Dalano's season averages (minus the playmaking).

  20. We are adding players to the roster who currently have skillsets zero people on our current roster have. Bryce will end scoring draughts by himself. Tominaga will be a pesky, Gallegos type threat (worse defender, better shooter), and WB is a very skilled big who can stretch the floor. Those are pieces (particularly Bryce) that give Fred seemingly infinite more rotation options. When I watch us play a competitive half of basketball against the top teams in the country, I'm encouraged by our roster. We don't have the horses for halftime personnel or rotation adjustments. Most of the better B1G teams do. Walker being in the lineup has helped, but we need an option at the 5 to stretch the court because I don't think anyone can stay in front of our other guys in ISO. WB might really help us there to change up the look in spot minutes for Walker. I also can't emphasize this enough: we have a legitimate home court advantage at PBA when there are fans. I think this team will be really fun to watch at home with their athleticism next season.

  21. She seems to be one of our better passers. She doesn't panic, and finds the open player. We might want to use her more when teams are applying full court pressure. Handling the press is still a challenge for us. We did handle it better than usual yesterday. They must be working on it. I also liked the inbound plays under our own bucket. We didn't make them all, but the design was good. For a brief time, late in the game, it looked like the players were instructed to run some clock. That didn't work. We're not good at it. Penn State cut into the lead immediately. Thank goodness, they went back to a normal pace and extended the lead. Probably something they will work on. Satisfying game to watch, for sure. Well done ladies.

  23. Besides the ball smashing Nicklin's face, the Huskers do have a rotation with the young setter Anni Evans and vet Jazz Sweet as well. Since Evans did well in the 1st point, NU kept her in there to finish it out on set point.
