I agree with this. Every year you hear stories about players in the Big Ten who have had lackluster careers who put it together in their senior year and lead their team to great things. Every. Year. Having high levels of roster turnover is, has been and always will be a recipe for disaster. You don't dump guys just because what's behind the curtain is almost always a repeat of what you had before with the guy already in your system. Sure, turnover is inevitable, but the more guys you can get to stay the better.5 points

I am really, really trying here guys. Yet in going back a looong time, I am quite sure we are playing as bad as any Husker team within my memory. How? Why? I keep hearing we are close...but are we?5 points -
We have a rotation we like to keep at 7-9 which means we have 4-6 guys who aren't playing. We can and will recruit over Yvan and it's up to those guys to be better than him and relegate him to the bench. Same deal with Thor. I tend to ride or die with those guys because they conduct themselves like pros; they're going to continue to show up whether or not they're playing and other guys need to earn their minutes. In theory, having these types of guys should push your 'more talented players.' From the looks of Andre's play last game, he gets this and is applying this. We need him to be the kind of player who starts or is 1b as the starting center next year because he's better than Yvan, not because Yvan transferred and someone has to play center.4 points

I can't upvote this enough. Rarely is the replacement an upgrade. We need to start seeing more guys stay for 4-5 years. We have been a revolving door for players who spend 1 or 2 seasons here, and it seems to happen almost every year. Samari Curtis, Amir Harris, Nana Akenten, Kevin Cross, Jordy Tshimanga, Jeriah Horne, Bakari Evelyn, Tarin Smith, Jacob Hammond, Jervay Green, Dachon Burke, and Cam Mack. Now, I know some of those guys dug their own grave in some regard, and many wound up at lower level D1 schools, but that is still a list of fairly talented players who left before their eligibility exhausted. The constant revolving door puts us in rebuild mode so often, making it almost impossible to sustain or build momentum. It'd be one thing if we were only getting 4 and 5 stars to sign and replace those listed above, but that's not the case, at least not yet. Imagine if we let or pushed Tai Webster out early? How about Brandon Ubel? What if Frank Kaminsky wasn't allowed to develop at Wisconsin? Some guys take more time than others. Who's to say that Yvan doesn't become a beast as a senior in 2 years?4 points
-
I agree with a lot of what you are saying about the need to keep players (I'd love to see Thor stick around next year, which is seemingly an unpopular opinion around here). What's the old saying about college basketball? Get old and stay old? We need to get old. But I will be the one (of many) to say that Yvan will not become a beast as a senior. His skill level is low, and his hands are stones. That's not going to change drastically. Can he get better? Sure. But become a beast? No way.3 points

I want to thank all of the faithful for reading without prejudice as well as offering excellent insights and comments. I know it was bombastic but I needed to purge. I want to state, I love Hoiberg and the staff and hope for the best. It is tough and I don't presume to have any answers. He is working hard and is brilliant, witty and funny. I love NU and am a graduate and have stuck with the team since I first began listening and watching (live and on t.v) back in 1976. You dance with the one that brung 'ya, so I will persevere.... The B1G is historically, frighteningly good this season. Is that an excuse? I don't know. What I do know is that Fred's offensive philosophy cannot work without multiple three point shooters on the court--not just threats, but shooters. Will we get that next season? I gotta think the three guys coming in see some minutes based on their shooting alone. A true 5-out means you spread the court with all 5. I'm encouraged because I don't think there is a player who can guard Trey, Banton, or Teddy 1 on 1 without help. Right now, they have no one to kick it to, and our bigs are not stretch bigs, so the lane is bunched. To see the offense work, I'm guessing we're going to need something like: Bryce (3pt) Trey Dalano Wilhelm (3pt) Lat (3pt) with an itchy trigger for something like: Bryce (3pt) Keisei (3pt) Teddy (3pt) Wilhelm (3pt) Lat (3pt) I think we have some nice pieces, but last night we couldn't field one lineup with multiple three point threats. Just Lat. To me, that's not really a reason for eternal pessimism--it just means Fred's roster hasn't arrived in totality yet.2 points -
I agree. I should have said that I also don't have a problem if Yvan stays the next couple years. That would certainly help us get "old." But I don't think he's going to become a next-level player.2 points

It's Wood. No s on the end. If we get to the point with him or anyone at the end of the season where we tell them they should think about moving because they won't get to play here they have the right to stay here if they want. Our scholarships are guaranteed. While it's probably cool to hang with a friend at school most guys aren't here to sit for 4 years.2 points

LNKtrnsplnt and one other reacted to Jacob Padilla for a topic
Well, I think it's safe to say that Teddy isn't exclusively the reason for the lack of ball movement and offensive struggles. Wasn't any better or more consistent without him; the other guys just aren't as good as he is at scoring in a bad situation.2 points -
I thought nothing epitomizes Nebrasketball in a nutshell better than making somewhat of a run (or, more accurately, an opponent flawlessly executing a standstill reminiscent of a patented Nebrasketball scoring drought) and then off of a nice interior pass, launching a reverse power dunk (that would've really fired up the team) 30 feet into the bench area instead of through the basket. This program is cursed.2 points

My first impression was that your first two paragraphs were a parody on some famous historical book/play/quote that I'm not well educated or well read enough to figure out. Then I kept reading and I really do think you've just hit a breaking point in your fandom. To each their own but I view my fandom as somewhere between eternal optimist and realist. I guess the one perspective I've learned over the past several years is that there is no point for me to live or die off of what a collection of 18-22 year olds do in a game or season. Sure, I get frustrated as most do on here but at the end of the day, I'm watching a product meant to entertain and take my mind off the stresses of the world. Now, you can question the "entertainment" aspect of this team. It's tough to watch this team at times but the eternal optimist in me says we're going to eventually round the corner in basketball (football - who knows). I believe in Fred like I believed in Miles and we had good moments under Miles. I hope that Fred finds the right formula and players to turn this program into a perennially competitive team that makes the big dance more often than not. The realist in me says this isn't as close as I want. But basketball is funny. You only start 5. One or two impact recruits with a nucleolus of role players can change your fortunes in a hurry. Fred put his first roster together in 30 days. I don't count that or the players we lost after year 1. That was year zero for me and Fred gets a complete pass from me. Last year stunk, this year is dreadful but I'm not writing off next year yet. See, there is the optimist in me coming out. The bottom line is that no one is forced to watch or consume the product. I enjoy Nebrasketball for what it is and has been for me over the past 6 years or so - which is several 2 hour stretches that I get to spend with my now 11 year old because I've brainwashed him to being a die hard fan and in being the eternal optimist as well (he is born and raised in Colorado, so this is no small feat!). I will consume every minute of every ugly loss for that one fact alone and the sun will still come up tomorrow2 points -

I see where you're coming from. I do. But for a team that needs practice reps after having a month off, and it's fairly obvious at this point, not having a walk through today/inconsistent practice schedule is not going to benefit them. Now, to your point it will show some guts on some of these players. The effort seemed to be the the other day, didn't watch last night, but they were in it <5 min left, so that tells me there is effort. It's a shitty circumstance, and I do see what you're saying though.2 points -

I agree with your list, sans Kevin Cross. I said it at the time of transfer and will say it again -- his baseline skillset was poor enough that he really had no chance at developing into a solid B1G player. He is averaging 33% from the floor overall and 18% on 3pt shots this year for Tulane. And still is averaging less than 5 rebounds per game. He is too small to rebound and defend the post, and not skilled enough to play on the wing.1 point -

I welcome the turnover in personnel. We don't have enough of the 'type' of players Fred needs to run his offense. We need 3 or 4 pure shooters that can hit the 3 with consistency. We need a true post player that can rebound, defend the rim, and score in the paint. In the current group of players, there are several players that Fred can build with -- but none of them are 'cornerstone' pieces. I think Trey McGowens, Lat Mayen, Derrick Walker, and Delano Banton are keepers -- the rest of the roster may change. Next year, Keisei Tominaga, Bryce McGowens, and Wilheim Breidenbach should improve our 3-point shooting. I look for Fred (and Matt) to bring in at least one or two more perimeter players and a 'big.'1 point -

I grew up in Nebraska and am a DONU grad, so it's not like I looked for a basketball program to follow and selected this one. So I'll follow the team like always. But to be honest, I'm not hopeful that this coaching staff is going to get it done. We're going to have a lot of turnover again in the offseason, and why shouldn't we? Half the roster shouldn't be playing in the Big Ten. Teddy's got a family, so I think he'll leave to get a paycheck. Maybe Delano does too. Maybe Bryce McGowens comes, but maybe his brother leaves and he decides to go to the G league or some other alternative. Either way, I'm not sure he's good enough to lift this collection of talent. And, of course, we'll again be watching a team struggling to play together early because there's no continuity. And after that, we'll be running the gauntlet of perennial Big Ten powerhouses again. So where does that leave us? I agree that you can't keep firing coaches, so that means watching the same old crap because that's what we do. Call it loyalty, or not having anything better to do.1 point -

But isn't that what these games essentially are right now? I want want a win just as bad as anyone. But what does it matter at this point? These guys have an opportunity to fix mistakes from a game two days later in another game. The coaches get to see who's taking coaching nearly instantly. Is it ideal? Of course not. All we have left for this season is silver linings. I am hoping to see some legitimate growth with this condensed schedule. These guys get to "practice" against some of the best competition in the NCAA.1 point -
One way to look at it is that it's Miles fault if he has to keep guys or it's Miles fault that he had to get rid of guys or Miles fault that he had to fly out to re-recruit Jervay Green. Seems like Hoiberg was given the freedom to remake our roster in any way he saw fit which he did. I get why he flipped it. I get why it got flipped again. I'll get if we flip it again this season. In the future we might win 20+ games and still it will be flipped. Hoiberg has been churning through rosters his entire time as a college coach and in the past has been successful in doing so. That's why it's so meaningless to bring up the guys that Miles recruited that transferred out; Hoiberg's SOP is roster churn. Hey man, it takes a while to build relationships and this is a buzzsaw of a league. Hoiberg didn't catch lightning in a bottle and needs more time. He will have close to infinite time with Moos as AD. If it's not all on him already, it certainly is to start year 3.1 point

Not saying Miles shouldn’t have been fired. He had his chance. That being said tho in his defense we lost Dre Davis (8.5 PPG, 3.4 rebounds and has started every game at Louisville as a freshman) and Mika Adams-Woods (7.3 PPG, started majority of games last 2 years at Cincy). We had some decent players ready to come into Lincoln.1 point -

Teddy shouldn't be the focus on "what's wrong with this team?" Bart Torvik rates him our most effective player, by a decent margin over Delano and a large margin over Trey. Yeah, his behavior is troubling, but a year ago everyone was convinced that FH would handle him. So he's exactly what we thought we were getting, except now the team is crap and some people are looking to point fingers. We signed up fo: a high-volume, high-scoring player with some baggage. It's somewhat paradoxical that Teddy is leading the team in eFG% and TS% while also dominating on usage. (not counting the Doane game nor Walker's 5-7 on the year) Typically you'll see guys that aren't shooting nearly enough who hit them at a high percentage and it's not the case with us. It's almost counterintuitive to surmise that giving guys who are shooting poorly more shot attempts will make our offense better. I don't exactly know if it's more about the team embracing that Teddy is going to shoot a ton and that leads to open shots or if it's Teddy embracing passing the ball more and that leads to open shots.1 point -

NU basketball & football motto: "We do less with more!" There are some on this site who know hopelessness but cannot find the strength to express it, most however cannot even abide the thought. It is the other cohort I am speaking to: the few who are brave enough say to themselves: NU is shit, has always been shit, and will ride the asymptotic curve of shit into eternity- right down to the Planck-scale. It is to you- the small set of fans who have heard the chimes at midnight lo these many decades and cannot waste any more time picking over the bones and viscera of this holocaust, that I speak. I say: save yourself by stealing back the time you would have lost by engaging further in any way with this abortion. Read more books, watch good films, listen to music, build, create, hike, garden. Spend more time with friends. Above all, seek God! I know the small-minded will toss reactive insults my way and tell me to go away, that I am stupid, am a troll etc. This, on an "open forum" no less- funny how the dimmest among us are the loudest in their denunciations of others with differing opinions. Remember: NU basketball speaks for itself. No amount of desperate histrionics or kindergarten insults will change the facts! I don't offer my thoughts to hurt anyone, players or coaches. They work hard and do their level best. Nature, however, bats last. Some are born for success, others to toil in Lincoln, Nebraska.... Recently someone on this board lamented NU's current conference affiliation. If NU was in the Big 12 they would still be winless. This nightmare is ongoing and inescapable. It won't get better. Why would it/how could it? The system requires good shooters and therefore doesn't fit the personnel at NU. This team was still-born from the beginning. The former recruiting "advantage" Hoiberg had at ISU (culling the best transfers) is no longer a secret. Every team is doing it. The recruiting momentum is waning- I am seeing demonstrably fewer highly ranked players even considering NU as the months roll by. McGowens, the Younger signed w/ NU only because his brother plays here, so the five-star hysteria should be given an asterisk... and that assumes he even follows through with his commitment. Moreover, who could blame good players from backing away from NU? Hoiberg's cache has vanished as has Frost's in football. Players talk and they know the whiff of death surrounds this steaming pile of garbage. I want to formally apologize for comments about Sallis, Traudt, Murrell, Hepburn and the other good players who want no part of this wreck.... Mercifully, only eight more games remain in the regular season. Following those eight blowout losses will be the opening day blowout loss in the conference tournament. After celebrating consecutive last place honors we will see the annual mass exodus of players, which will be followed by a desperate influx of paper champions running from their respective pasts. This forum will be agog over their incredible potential and like Linus van Pelt waiting for the Great Pumpkin, cries that this will be "the year" when all the suffering will have been worth it! Of course, the season will start and the tragi-comedy will resume. The bad shooting and dopey play will commence and when March rolls around alas, the fourteenth place three-peat will be ours! Perhaps the most astonishing element in this whole scenario is the differential between NU and the other teams in the league. NU is so much worse than whichever program is second most inept. Even historically bad Northwestern has three times the wins NU does, and has beaten several really good teams. NU isn't even competitive. We have seen no improvement from last season. No improvement from the start of this year. All the hype (Walker will give us a legitimate inside presence, Lakes will keep defenses honest, etc.) was nothing but the annual bullshit shoveled into the mouths of NU's desperate fan base. Lakes, Ouedraogo, Andre, Wood and Arop: nothing, nothing, nothing! Yes, friends this is the end of the line. The Huskers have no business playing in the Big Ten in basketball or football. Frost and Hoiberg, Hoiberg and Frost. They are out of their depths. NU should shut down the program and save the money. Put it into research and hiring good professors, or at the very least drop down to Div. II. UNO (Omaha) went from Div. II to Div. I, why can't NU find a more suitable level? Ultimately this is strange, because I thought Hoiberg would be the one to overcome the curse- he is a brilliant basketball mind, after all. Some obstacles are simply too great to conquer. I might just offer my services as head coach once Hoiberg decides to extricate himself. Heck, I'd coach the team for a fraction of the current salary. I know I could lead them to an 0-20 record every year, blowouts guaranteed! Just remember: "We do less with more". That said, I wish everyone peace and bonhomie. Selah.0 points
