I know coaches have different styles, but I like the Jeff Van Gundy style of holding players accountable in-game. "The best motivator is the bench," he says. We have players that keep making the same elementary mistakes without consequence. Maybe they're being held accountable in practice. I know Hoiberg is at least talking to them about it, because he talks to the media about it. As someone else on here pointed out, Jim Molinari used to say, "you are what you sub for." If you want to clean up poor shot selection, take a guy out when they attempt a stupid shot. If you want Lat and Teddy to quit dribbling into two defenders and turning it over, pull them immediately after they do it. I can see the coaches get visibly upset when a player doesn't trust the offense and decides to be an isolationist before throwing up a wild shot or turning it over. Why not pull them out for awhile? Hoiberg says getting your shot blocked is the same thing as a turnover. We just got our shot blocked 5 times by a team that doesn't have a guy over 6'8". Pull a guy when they force something that results in a blocked shot. Same thing goes for missed block-outs, lazy closeouts, poor body language and lack of effort. I'm seeing all of these things. You have to build good culture somehow. It's not like our +/- is too much worse when our bench players are in the game. We have a lot of problems, but I still think wasted possessions are our biggest problem, which can be due to a lot of the things I mentioned above. Guys need to be held accountable for wasting possessions. You have to cherish every possession in college basketball. Sorry for ranting.5 points -

There has been a lot of criticism on this board. Some fair and some very unfair. But today was fun. Great game plan and girls hit a few clutch shots to overcome some bad luck with Sam getting hurt late — I honestly feel like if any 2 or even 1 of the Wing guards (Kissenger Dillard brady or Clayton ) who all would have been n the season plans in June plays all season and we would be significantly better. As a unit our bigs are reasonably solid and Sam is very solid. We don’t get much positive out of the other guard spot. They can all 3 shoot fairly well but they r not athletic at all and more importantly is the fact that they don’t realize what they can’t do. Specially they try to drive in traffic, shoot floaters dribble by people against press etx. A Small unathletic kid that can shoot well can help if they don’t turn it over and move the ball but knowing what u can’t do is as important as knowing what u can do.—- great win. Still going to be some struggles this especiallh if porter or Clayton don’t play. However if u return your 4 bigs and add 2 or 3 healthy wing guards/off guards we would be way better4 points -

My analysis will start with the coach, who has won before in a major conference, so until this continues to suck for another couple of years, I'm going to assume we have a successful coaching staff. As for the players, I haven't watched a lot of other teams in the Big Ten this year, but I've seen enough to seriously wonder if any of our guys — with Banton as a possible exception — would start on ANY other Big Ten team. Hell, OSU pulls a guy off the bench, Ahrens, who plays 12 minutes a game, and shoots the lights out. Our candidates to play that role are: An Icelander who's hitting 21 percent. A Division II transfer who's hitting 25 percent against teams not called "Doane." A Summit League transfer who's 0-for-8 against Big Ten competition. T. McGowens and T. Allen might be able to play a role on another Big Ten team, but I'm hard-pressed to figure out what it might be. We definitely need to keep those three around for the future, and we need to keep trying to develop players such as Andre and Wood, but we're woefully short of talent compared to other conference teams, and that apparently includes Northwestern, which isn't having any trouble running guys out there who can get off — and make — a high percentage of their 3-point shots in a five-out offense. Best case next year? B. McGowens has an immediate impact, much like Ayo Dosunmu did at Illinois. Banton continues to develop as a team leader and point guard, building on what he's painfully learning right now. Teddy and Trey hang around, but with an understanding that Bryce and Banton are the straws that stir a winning drink. Somebody develops as a true Big Ten post — not even one of the better ones, just an adequate guy like Kyle Young — whether it's Yvan, Eduardo or Derrick. Tominaga is a true sniper who not only can get his shot off against athletic opposition, but drain 40 percent of them. Breidenbach is ready to contribute as a stretch four off the bench. We find some (gulp) transfers who can shoot from deep, or Lakes figures out how to do that this year and becomes a Big Ten-level sniper by next year. There's a lot of development and hope tied to just getting this team to be competitive, but if Nebrasketball fans possess a lot of anything, it's hope ... and patience, which is wearing thin as 2020 winds down. On edit: Lat. Oh, Lat. Seems like an awesome human being, but I'm just not seeing anything that tells me he can play at this level. I hope he can turn it around soon. I'll be pulling for him.4 points

what exactly are your recruiting results that you need to see? In his first real recruiting cycle he has a 5*, a kid in the national 50-75 range and best shooter in Juco. That is a great result if you asked me. Fred inherited a horrible roster that had to be wrecked. Think it is crazy to put him on the clock in less than two years and only 10 games into a season with mostly new guys playing together. It sucks waiting and watching crap like last night but he is a proven coach and needs time3 points -

Still behind Hoiberg to turn this around. He had to start from scratch, at a program that hasn't had any sustained success since the 90's. We have some pieces, they just aren't fitting together. Hopefully this brings you some optimism as well: 1) We started the 2nd half on a 3-0 run 2) We only missed 6 free throws 3) Andre had a perfect night of shooting 4) Lat made a three 5) 2020 ends in under 18 hours3 points -

1. This was a rare awful defensive effort, which is why we got slaughtered. 2. We can’t shoot. I think that’s conclusive by now. 3. This is, statistically, possibly the best conference of all time. Let that sink in before getting too down. 4. Due to #3, we can’t get away with #2 and win only with defense this year. There’s just too many fantastic teams. 5. I’ll start truly judging this year’s team when Walker enters the lineup. 6. I’ve seen plenty of good looks generated by our offense all season (and last season). Help is on the way next year, but it’s very hard to bring it every night know you’re gonna shoot 20% this year.3 points -

- Got an early 3 from Lat. Hopefully that means good things. - OSU tried to back Yvan into the paint and he didn't budge. I really like what I'm seeing from him in B1G play. He shouldn't try to drive, though... - Middle of the first half turned into a rec legue game. Lots of bad shooting on both sides. - I have no answer to the scoring droughts... - Several shots that felt like a 15 point attempt. Way too impatient on offense. - This feels like a nice summation: - McGowens doesn't stop playing. Gotta give him that, at least. - Teddy can't stay out of foul trouble. Felt like they could hang a bit when he was on the floor, but he couldn't stay out there. - I don't think Banton had a very good game. Made some really weird choices with the ball. Sloppy ball handling, too. - Eduardo Andre was completely in over his head today. - Stevenson looks completely hapless. Maybe it's just rust after such a long layoff... This team's a mess. I don't know what else to day. That was about as bad of an effort as I've seen from NU in a long time.2 points -

This was a trainwreck, but for some reason I couldn't stop watching. What's mystifying to me is that Coach Hoiberg sees these guys in practice every day and a constant refrain has been that we have guys who can make shots, but for some reason, haven't done so in games. The mental aspect of the game is so important, and I have to believe that at least 50% of our problems emanate between the ears. But watching these guys, I am alarmed at the glaring lack of basketball IQ/savvy that has been on display. There have been numerous examples of this, such as knowing when (and when not) you have an advantage to take your defender off the dribble, failing to make an extra pass when doing so would have resulted in a clean look for a teammate, or simply showing an understanding of your assignment on the defensive end. I still believe we have pieces to be competitive, but these fundamental mistakes have got to get cleaned up. Banton is a good player, but I'd rather see him pass up most of the 3's he takes and instead develop a mid/short range game where he gets in the paint and uses his length to score taking short jump shots - not to mention getting stronger so he can finish better at the rim. He also ball watches on defense and is slow to close out quite a bit. Same for Teddy. Teddy could benefit from developing a 8-12 foot repertoire as well. I haven't lost faith that HCFH knows how to coach and teach basketball, but unless he has some skills as a sports psychologist, this may get uglier. I'm hoping that Walker can at least be a threat that other teams have to account for off of ball screens - even having the ability to catch the ball and go up and finish without bringing the ball down will be a huge upgrade. I am pulling for Lat, but if he can't make shots, there is simply no advantage to playing him at the 4 or 5. What he gives up defensively he has to be able to offset by making them pay on the offensive end. Hoping we can taste at least some semblance of success and improvement in the next few weeks. Forever GBR, even it it drives me to the asylum.2 points -

Ok, long time season ticket holder in men’s basketball (1990-current) and football (1987-2003) with some food for thought as we enter a new year. Something that isn’t talked about much because it’s seen almost as Taboo even today, is the benefits of a true sports psychologist and the effects it has on the overall mental well being of today’s student athletes. I’ve had the privilege of speaking with Coach Osborne numerous times regarding this. He credits Jack Stark and the formation of the Unity council with as much - if not more credit towards the mid 90’s dominance as much as he did improved recruiting or a particular scheme on offense or defense. The mental toughness and focus during that time was undoubtedly in a much higher place than in today’s athletic department. Now, I’m not going to get into why Dr. Stark hasn’t been utilized since I believe 2004, and that he’s subsequently worked with Creighton and Doug McDermott, Hendricks motor sports, amongst many others. Mental health is on the decline amongst young people. That’s a fact. Depression, Anxiety, and Suicides are on a sharp increase even in the past few years. Think this doesn’t apply here? I can think of two former starters at Receiver and 2 promising volleyball players that transferred all dealing with mental health issues. There is a current juco transfer as well dealing with mental health issues. It’s really easy to get on this forum or Twitter and quickly say “___ sucks at shooting” or “______ is a waste of space.” I’m not throwing stones, I’ve done it too. I’ve NEVER tweeted at or tagged a player with a negative comment, but many “fans” have. All this to say, I believe the players feel the pressure and the consecutive losses mount up and they can sense the negativity. And it compounds, and increases the pressure. Yes, they are division I scholarship players and they should be able to handle pressure. But wouldn’t a dedicated, team sports psychologist be of some benefit? Coach Miles brought in someone part time and he and his staff as well as the players mentioned it was helping. Then the plug was pulled. And yes, I’m fully aware of the NAPL and that kind of research science and analytics isn’t what I’m getting at. It’s tangible ways of helping Lat with a shooting slump, Teddy with his competitive fire and using that for good. It’s helping a third year volleyball player from a small town in another state deal with a true freshmen coming in and taking her spot. It’s keeping guys like Luke and Adrian from getting too down and able to deal with the immense pressure of leading the team as a QB. You get the point. It’s something that’s been on my mind really the past few years. Ok, I’m off my soap box. Someone hand me a root beer and I’ll go to bed....2 points -

Despite last night, my dissatisfaction with how this year is going, and my hesitation on the program right now... I don’t think this team is as bad as we showed last night. I don’t know why... but I don’t think we’ll lose by more than a few buckets on Saturday if we lose. We may pull it out. We need something good to happen to us. Once it does though... it’ll be interesting to see how the snowball rolls. Through thick and thin... GBR forever!2 points -
