I've noticed over the years when you try to blend a bunch of new guys together, it generally takes a good ten games before they kind of figure out where the points come from and how to make those opportunities happen. This year, we had a bunch of new guys but not the luxury of a normal non-conference with a host of directional cupcakes to cut our teeth on. Yeah, we lost, but we were within 4 points with 6 minutes to play against a top 20 team. I think we're going to see some guys begin to appear more comfortable out there and I think we have a win or two on the horizon. Heck, you're already seeing it with Yvan. He's kind of grasped some of his limitations and what not to do and he's now focusing on where he's strong and can help the team. I'm not as down as some people are, but then that's kind of what I'm known for, right?5 points -

It just doesn't seem like this team is committed to run. The guy with the ball will push it but everyone else runs with the pack instead of getting out ahead of the ball. Nike Bahe said a few times that he would like to see Nebraska's athletes in the open floor. I would like to see us press to get the game going up and down even if it means giving up easy shots which we do anyway. We can't guard the post one on one and when we double it just leads to open threes. Everybody thinks they want to run and gun but it takes a full commitment from five guys to run hard on every possession, make or miss.5 points -

--Thought Teddy had a good first half, but dropped off in the 2nd half. Unfortunately, with a "volume" guy, they are going to keep shooting the entire night after having a first half like that. -- Lat is giving us virtually nothing right now. His shot is OFF. I realize it's different shooting in practice vs shooting in a game, but 80/100 should mean you at least shoot 33% in a game right? -- We fought back in this one, but it was too far gone. Once again, we can't play for a full 40 minutes. Maybe one of these games. -- Yuv... my man... has been great since his struggles early on. -- Andre needs to start taking Lat's minutes if he ain't hitting. -- Lakes was meh... need to try and find him open looks. -- Banton took wayyy too many tough shots once we started to make a comeback. -- Pretty good game for McGowens. -- Overall, wish it could have been closer but at least we didn't fold. We've got a long 18 games coming.3 points -

Generic to the season as a whole, but there's a trend: We can play for one half. Then we shut down. Shooting inconsistency is continually a problem. Bad things this season, but promise for next season if some things get fixed. No need for a major overhaul, just a lot of small mistakes that add up real fast for us this season. Good to see some response after a drought this time around, but not enough to topple a ranked team. Do like Hoiberg's ability to create opportunities, we're just got scoring off of them.3 points -

Nebraska only took 20 3s, and a few of Teddy's were desperation shots late in the clock after they failed to create anything else. Nebraska shot 18-44 (40.9%) inside the arc including 10-24 on layups and 1-2 on dunks per the live stats. The Huskers missed their first 10 2-point shots of the second half. And a lot of the time when Dalano tried to create off the bounce he ended up taking really hard in-between shots, most of which he missed (6-14 inside the arc). It's not as simple as "stop shooting 3s and take more 2s." They're not good at 2s either right now, and they're obviously not good at the free-throw line either.2 points -

I was thinking of two analogies to draw up for 2020-21 Nebrasketball. EXPANSION The first had to do with an NBA expansion team in the not-so-distant past. That comparison is all about getting a bunch of guys through different manners of acquisition: the expansion draft would net a bunch of guys who were the eighth and ninth players on other NBA rosters, good guys, but not game-changers; combing through European and developmental league rosters for a few guys who could contribute, though if they were really good, they'd be on an established team; and the first college draft, where you're picking in the middle of the first round or later, might get you a decent rookie or two to build around. The first year is a struggle, no matter how hard the team may play or well they're coached. They're going against established teams that have played together for years, so wins are nearly impossible to come by. But the real payoff comes at the end of that first year, when you've likely finished at or very near the bottom of the league. That's when you get that first lottery draft choice and you're able to build a team that can compete almost every night and start to inch toward .500 and playoff contention. That's what we are right now — an expansion team. So we shouldn't be too disappointed that winning in the Big Ten has become a seemingly impossible proposition, at least this early in the season. If this team isn't starting to win a few games here and there by late January and into February, then it might be that bad. Still, there's that lottery pick and another high draft choice already in the fold for next year. AUDITIONS The second analogy has to do with theater, comparing this season to a continuing round of auditions in front of no audiences, just the producer, the director, and the nutty assistant director. We're slated to open on Broadway in about a year, at the beginning of the Big Ten season. We'll go on tour, sure, before then, performing in front of audiences in various venues before the 2021-22 conference season, and that will be the final weeding out process of determining if we have a cast that will start to compete on a more-or-less even court with the rest of the Big Ten. We've signed our top billing, our biggest name ever, to star, but right now we're still in the first round of auditions, looking for a few strong supporting cast members to fill out the cast. There are eight parts to fill, with a couple of stand-ins available if we need then. So how are the auditions going? The Stars (2) Bryce McGowens may not immediately be the best actor on stage when he arrives for the touring version of the show, but he's what we're counting on to improve everyone's performance. Dalano Banton will play the other star role, balancing his skills with Bryce's to lead the production. The Other Leads (2) Teddy Allen and Trey McGowens seem to have the other two spots in hand if you think of the work having four main characters. They'll need to make sure they understand that when the leads are on stage, their roles are supporting ones, and they can take the lead and shine when one of the stars isn't on stage. They've proven they can help a mid-level Big Ten team succeed. The Supporting Cast (4) This is where the auditions over the next two-and-a-half months will show who's going to be stepping out on stage for us when we hit the Great White Way (otherwise known as Wisconsin and Iowa). Lat Mayen is struggling to prove he can "act" at this level. Early reviews are mediocre at best. Will he even get a callback? Kobe Webster and Thor have shown some talent, but it's not sure if either will even stick through the touring stage as they might have offers to do summerstock in Europe. Yvan Ouedraogo and Eduardo Andre have shown some intriguing talents, but neither is a lock to make the supporting cast. Derrick Walker, Wilhelm Breidenbach and Elijah Wood haven't been given much of a chance to show what they can do, though we'll learn about Walker soon. Trevor Lakes and Keisei Tominaga have similar range, but different skills, though there may be room for only one of them in the regular cast. Shamiel Stevenson right now appears to be on the no-callback list. On edit: Oh, and Akol Arop. So that's 12 "actors" for four spots as regular cast members. Who are the four you'd go with at this point to complement B. McGowens, Banton, Allen and T. McGowens? In other words, who's acing the auditions at this point? And do we have enough quality actors auditioning for the parts to last a whole season on Broadway?1 point

Only got to see a little bit of this game down the stretch. - I saw them cut Michigan's lead to 4. - I saw they were 2-10 from 3 in the first half. They're not only bad from 3, they're regressing as the season is going along. That's not ideal. - They got to the foul line a lot down the stretch and I think they were something like 3-7. I wasn't able to watch that closely to know exactly what the real number was. They're going to get to the line a lot this year. If they can't convert, that's going to be a good thing for the other team. - Defense, rebounding and energy looked pretty good in what I saw. But if the above 2 points don't get figured out, I fear those other things will start to wane. I'll let y'all fill me in on the rest. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and happy holidays!1 point -

which is what cost Timmeh his job and made his tenure so maddening. He had talent. We had three marginal NBA guys on a roster for two full seasons, just 2-3 years ago. And bupkis. It was a worse situation than the '96 team in terms of high-end underachieving. This won't be a fast process, because the league we're in is as tough as there is. I'm keeping my expectations tempered to match that reality.1 point -
I can remember a time in the not too distant past when we had a new group of really solid players and we started conference 0-4... we ended up dancing. So there is some chance.1 point

We agree on Banton's shooting. He made a couple of nice moves to the basket early, but then made poor choices when his moves weren't strong. My feeling is not "take more twos and less threes" it is, find ways to make easier scoring opportunities. Outside of screen action to free up 3-pt shooters, that is probably going to be more 2 pt shots...but what I want to see is movement that puts players moving toward the basket and passes catching them in stride/ in the shooting pocket. So many of our shots are forced (2s and 3s) because we let the defense get set and then we try to shoot over or bull rush. As somebody else said, other teams move the ball, make the extra pass, and as Bahe said...transition speed. Get some open looks, high percentage shots and build leads and confidence. But you can see the team deflate when 10 seconds into a possession, a three misses and we have to rush back to defend.1 point

Everything in this post, and other posts, indicates that we just don’t have enough above average basketball players yet. So I went back and looked at the roster of Miles’ most talented team (I actually thought the 17-18 team was better than the 13-14 tourney team) and checked their recruiting rankings. I was surprised to see just how much talent was on that roster. 7 guys on that team were Rivals 150 recruits. Before Glynn Watson, I don’t believe we had ever had a Rivals ranked player at Nebraska. Isaac Copeland - #23 (5*) Anton Gill - #50 (4*) Glynn Watson - #82 (4*) James Palmer - #99 (4*) Thomas Allen - #103 (4*) Isaiah Roby - #113 (4*) Jordy Tshimanga - #150 (3*) Watson was a third year starting point guard, Gill was in his third year at Nebraska, Palmer had sat out the year before, Roby and Jordy were in the rotation the year before as freshmen and Copeland had been in Lincoln for half a year. Our team this year has two Rivals 150 players and two more are coming next year. Bryce McGowens - #23 (5*) Dalano Banton - #80 (4*) Trey McGowens - #83 (4*) Wilhem Breidenbach - #132 (3*) Hopefully most of our core guys come back next year. More help is on the way. Keep building, not rebuilding, from here on out.1 point -

I refuse to believe that we are as bad of shooters as our percentages say. I see two major issues with our shooting, specifically from behind the three-point line. 1. Too often, our guys are not catching good, in rhythm passes. Teams like Michigan and Creighton seem to always have shooters catching passes and shooting shots in rhythm, and they tend to go in more often than ours. 2. We also rarely make the extra pass or two that good shooting teams tend to make. Lots of our 3-pointers seem to come with a hesitation, not very much ball movement, or are contested.1 point -

We give great physical effort in ways, but refuse to do the little things right and play as a team, which is part of giving great effort mentally. We don’t have enough guys who will just catch a pass, and immediately reverse it or move it. Everyone wants to be the guy to make the play off of a ball screen or something. We’re very one dimensional. You just handle our ball screens as a team, then close out comfortably. Yvan continues to leave 7-10 guaranteed points in the ether by his I inability to finish bunnies and and1 opportunities. He’s a zero-threat as a roll man on ball screens, and he’s a zero-threat as a drop down guy in the dunker spot. He played 30 minutes and Michigan’s big had 13 and 15, so it’s not like he really negated much. We have to either attempt to see if Andre can do it with the bullets flying, put Shamiel as the 5, or just wait and pray for Walker. I watched it quickly, but by my count Thor gave up two massive, back-breaker 3pt shots by over/late helping on a drive from the corner - which is a major no-no in big boy basketball. He’s also just not a threat to do anything offensively.1 point -

Was unable to watch live, had to catch up on DVR. Nice halves from Allen and McGowens. Need a whole game. Banton wasn't making good choices on his shots. Echoing the tempo critique, both Banton and McGowens had easy buckets when they raced to the offensive end... gotta have more of that. At what point does it become clear that the three point barrage is not in the current team's repertoire? I understand coaching style, and preference, but I also remember that COACHING involves finding a way to get more points than the other team. Coaches seem to understand that if you don't have a powerful post you don't try to pound inside, but when you have a team that has proven to perimeter-limited, why isn't there another option? I believe a made two is worth more than a missed three. I have never seen a team get away with more moving screens than Michigan in this game.1 point

My observations, for what they are worth. Michigan moved the ball and people crisply and got better looks. Nebraska stagnates too much, 4 people standing and watching a dribbler. (in fairness, we did have some movement in the first half.) Because of Dickinson we had to double team and Michigan moved the ball to get good shots. Michigan is good on defense but we were easy to guard. Andre might be an unpolished gem. Smith, the Michigan point guard made some very slick passes. We seemed to sulk when we didn’t get foul calls on drives to the basket. IMO our 3 point percentage is lower than it should be because of selection of attempts. How often have we taken an offensive rebound and kicked it out for an open 3? IF, and it’s a big IF, we can play a full 40 minutes we might pull off some wins. Minnesota beating Iowa tonight is one more tough opponent. Who believed Northwestern would be this good?1 point -

Free Throws
NUtball reacted to Nebrasketball1979 for a topic
I watch every game and just shake my head at our consistently horrid free throw shooting. While our talent is improved over last year and I believe we have the horses to compete on most nights, we continue to make our basketball lives far harder than it needs to by being just a horrible free throw shooting team. Why is that? Do we not practice enough at it? Is it all mental? Anytime Fred talks about it, he emphasizes that the kids are getting the work in and putting in extra work, so what gives? Good or adequate free throw shooters transfer in and become worse at it here. Is the Big 10 FT line at 14' 10" and this is some sort of inside joke that the BIG never informed Nebraska of? I just don't get it. I expected Teddy to be in the 85% - 90% range based on how he shot last year. He's almost an automatic 1 out of 2 each trip. And, he's not alone in the struggles. Look at these examples Dalano is the only one to show improvement and the rest have not just gotten worse but drastically worse. We're 8 games in so perhaps this is too small of a sample size but man, this seems like an ongoing trend over the last few years. I use to think it was a conditioning thing and guys didn't have the legs. BUT, we don't discriminate when we miss free throws. We miss at the beginning of games, at the end of games and basically at any juncture in a game when we go to the line. When we do go to the free throw line, I'm mentally preparing myself for a 1 out of 2. You know what Wisconsin did last night at the free throw line...15 for 15. Us...9-17. The difference between us and Wisconsin last night wasn't that great. We pass the eye test talent wise most night. I've concluded that the issue has be be mostly mental at this point and the difference between us and most teams appear to be between the eyeballs. Make a few open threes and hit a representative amount of free throws and our competitive losses become wins. Curious if anyone else has theories.1 point -
