  1. One thing I'll say about Akol Arop: He reminds me of Devine Ozigbo. No, really. And it has nothing to do with the fact that Devine was buried on the depth chart early in his career with few people thinking he had any real chance of ever seeing meaningful snaps. No, what reminds me of Devine when I see Akol is something Devine said about himself. Before the NFL draft in 2019, Devine was making his pitch to NFL teams as to why they should draft a guy like him. I don't remember his exact words, but here are the themes: 1. No one is going to out-work me; 2. You will never be embarrassed about anything I do off the field; 3. I'm the opposite of a locker room cancer. I don't know anything about Akol's work ethic, but I am absolutely confident that he fits the description for #2 and #3. And if his work ethic matches the other things I think I know about him, I would be surprised if #1 doesn't fit him as well. His handles need a ton of work; his feel for the game needs a ton of work; he tends to get lost on defense. But he oozes athleticism and he has solid mechanics on his jumper. If he's been shooting non-stop this off-season, with his athleticism, he could easily be a 3-and-D guy who doesn't need to dribble much. And there's clearly room in the Hoiberg offense for such a player.

I agree. If Akol Arop sticks with it at NU, he could be a Grade-A defender, rebounder, and outlet dude who cleans up around the rim. I also have a lot of faith in the power of persistent progress!!

  6. Welcome back, Noah! I always knew you'd come back to supporting primary colors some day. "And that's when I knew I had to come home and get back to my roots. Because as the saying goes, you can't have purple without red. ...and that Northwestern Wildcats is abbreviated NW." - Noah (probably)

And I love the Elijah Wood move... much in a similar vein to my lovin' Evan Taylor before he ever arrived in Lincoln. Gotta have glue guys who are 6'-5" guards. LET'S GO!!

  10. Andre checks in at 9:39 mark Tries a post move against future Pitt Panther Max Amadasun and is shut down Had a fancy looking spin move that didn't end well but a lot of hustle to get back and try and make a play on D. Great pick and roll to the rim, gets owned by Amadasun Lutheran scores so fast that Andre gets a dunk off a 2 on 1 when they break back. Pick and roll again, Andre tries to avoid the Amadasun block and travels Out at the 15:00 mark 19:00 Slias Sunday in to start the 2nd quarter (big dood #24) Andre back in at 26:11 Steps in front of a pass in a zone and starts the break towards the end of the half Sunday accidentally clocks Andre in the head. Makes both FTs. Andre picks up a questionable foul. End of the first half. A holy shit dunk by St John's 6'0" PG commit Posh Alexander worth watching at the 55:00 minute mark Andre back in at 102:20 Gets an over the back foul Defends against a pick well, steals the ball from a guard. Is able to compose himself when chased down by a wolf and finishes. Impressive. Out at 1:09

As to Arop, aphilso is right: never underestimate the power of persistent effort over time. He's got the athleticism required to compete in the B1G. And you've gotta' admire his perseverance amid adversity -- which is what success is ultimately built upon!

I'm back from a little bit of time off and am catching up on the latest roster turnover. I'd like to hear from anyone that is optimistic that Wood will be a contributor. What are your thoughts on his game, and why do you think he will fit in here? My knee-jerk reaction is that I don't think he'll crack the rotation this year. And given his proclivity to decommit multiple times during the recruiting process, that makes him appear to be a highly likely transfer candidate if he indeed is not in the rotation. But I'd love for someone to convince me I'm wrong! So to any Elijah Wood fans -- please let me know why I should jump on the bandwagon.
