    Kevin Cross is leaving

So much for Doc being the recruiting ace of the staff....

  2. I do not know what kind of BS they fed her about development or plans for development. We have all seen what a poor job this coaching staff has done in developing players either offensively or defensively in the four years that they have been here. We are still waiting on the development of scoring moves by a center. In the four years that they have been coaching here the only player showing significant offensive improvement was Brown last year and now she is gone!

  3. And being replaced with better talent. The entire point of coaching is to recruit talent better than what you have. The guys we had are going to places like South Alabama, Pacific, etc. We are in the Big 10 and need Big 10 players. They were bodies in a lineup and we will continue to get more and more players in that fit the mold.

  4. My fear, and some are predicting this, is that it will hit hard again during the winter flu season which of course would cancel basketball. I can live without football, but to miss the boys state basketball tournament, the NCAA's, the MLB season and then to have to miss college hoops and it starts over again would be tough to handle.

  5. For me the biggest disappointments were Green and Kavas. I thought Green would be a consistent scorer both from the arc and going to the rim. Neither happened. Kavas never really found his stroke until toward the end, and of course then got hurt. If he wasn't hitting shots, he was not much help at anything else. He did seem to keep a good attitude though. Green's play shows how you just can't say a JUCO player will come in and do this or that for you. They truly are wildcards.

  6. You can say this for 90% of all teams. Both men and women. The Center position is the most difficult to coach in D1 college. Most big kids dominated in high school because they were the biggest kid on the floor. Not because they were the most skilled.

  7. Surprising considering Creighton pays more than the G league.

  8. If he'd just been funnier looking, let's say having an extra ear or having an arm growing out of the top of his head, he wouldn't have been such a misfit for the Iowa roster.

    2020-2021 Husker BB Team

So the 20-21 season is good news in terms of getting some transfers to bolster the team. The bad news is we have the same coaching staff which has proven to be ineffective in fixing problems. Several things have remained issues with the current coaching staff the last few seasons to include turnovers; lack of offensive rebounding; defensive issues at times; numerous missed close in shots; and questionable offensive schemes/development particularly for the 4/5 position players. So it looks like the 2020-21 NE women's basketball team will likely be another season of mediocrity or less. Last year's 10th place finish in the Big Ten does not cut it nor loosing to Creighton for 4 years running with them shooting 15 3's in 16; 11 in 17; 5 in 18; and 14 in 19!!!

  11. I don't expect him to start on next years team and those that cover the team don't as well. Now if he exceeds expectations again and plays out of his mind I won't complain but I expect him to get some good minutes, especially early in crunch time, as he plays solid team ball.

  12. That was my initial thought as well but having thought about it, I don't think that is going to be a determining factor. Hypothetically, if he reclassifies to 2020 and the 2020-2021 season is cancelled, he's still a freshman when the 2021-2022 season starts. A cancelled season simply means he gets an extra year of free room and board, gets a year's worth of classes under his belt, and gets the likely benefit of using the basketball facilities and weight room while maintaining his 4 years of eligibility. And, if the college season is cancelled, i suspect most high school seasons will be as well. Perhaps he's just debating whether or not he wants to skip a year of high school and leave his family and friends a year early.

  16. I just hope she can in fact, will play next season. We need another post desperately as we have discussed. And she does have college experience, although not B1G style and toughness. But it puts her on the playing list quickly Nonetheless if she is eligible...will fill a huge need in the box. Her resume says she's a shot blocker and rebounder. Man do we need that stuff. Guards.... we have...it's another story yet to develop, on how all the newbies and "oldies" might work out on the roster. But down in the paint we must get some Bella help.

  20. Cross went 10 for 48 from the field in the month of February. I dare say, that is unmatched in Nebraska history, possibly in Big Ten history, possibly in major conference history. That said, I did not want him to transfer out, and good luck to him. I think he'll end up having a fine career if he puts in the work. Being an inexperienced and undersized post player, playing with a thrown-together roster that was not deep in talent, and playing in the deepest and most physical conference in the country was not a recipe for success for him last year.

  27. Known Quantities: Thor Thorbjarnarson: Heady G/F with a high hoops IQ; good passer who moves well w/o the ball on offense; unselfish; came on as a spot-up shooter his junior year; lacks a bit of lateral quickness on defense so tends to play off his defensive assignment so as to err on the side of stopping penetration, leaving more space to the offensive player to shoot perimeter shots. Yvan Ouedraogo: Strong, thick-built but slightly undersized PF; appears to lack high-level explosiveness both in terms of leaping and quickness; hands are a question mark as both passes and rebounds sometimes bounce off the stones at the ends of his arms; has some low-post skill and sometimes does a good job of using his shoulders to create space but lacks touch and hasn't finished well around the rim; tends to try to finesse his way around defenders in the low post instead of going up strong with the ball and tends to take too much time to gather himself and loses the advantage of the defender being off-balance when he receives dishes in the low blocks; played his entire freshman year as a 17-year-old; could take a substantial step forward from freshman to sophomore year. Kevin Cross: Either a way-undersized big with A+ skills or an under-athletic wing with average wing skills. He could improve his athleticism with some off-season conditioning but has probably maxed out on size. Was out of position as the only option to back up Yvan and almost never played in any other capacity. Could be a quality Hoiberg 4 if he can groove his 3-point shooting, which he certainly has potential to do. Lacked production as a rebounder as a freshman. Akol Arop: Uber athletic wing with the platform to build a solid jumper, but very raw in the skills department and seemed frequently lost on the floor last season, particularly on the defensive end. Unknown Quantities: Everybody else, including Dalano Banton, who could end up being really *really* good. Or just average. Or terrible. We really have no way of knowing. At his prior school, he was a bad FT shooter (55.9%) and a bad 3-pt shooter (21.6%). Small sample size, perhaps. Might have really improved his shooting while sitting out. Might have. Might not have. None of us really know. At his last stop, Kobe Webster shot 33.3% from 3-point range last season; Kobe King shot 25% from 3 last year; Trey McGowens, if he's eligible, shot 31.1% from 3 last season at Pitt; Lat Mayen is a 6'9 juco kid who shot it well but not a lot; and Teddy Allen pretty much burned the nets up at the same school where Jervay Green burned the nets up the year before. So, in an offense that likes the rim and loves the 3, we seem to have recruited a bunch of players who love the rim even when they're shooting 3s. And while it's entirely possible that we've found the recipe that will get us into the top half of our league and get our danced card punched, it may be more likely that we finish outside the league's top ten. But there are simply too many unknowns to look at this roster and say we're *confident* in any sort of favorable outcome to the season. I'm all for being hopeful. But I have no confidence that I can predict this one way or the other.

  31. If they go online classes they should prepare to lower tuition. Im with Norm, people are already turning. Plus biggest thing to me is getting kids back in school this fall. We have to figure that out somehow. K-12 kids can’t go another year with out school and that is what is really happening now in most school districts.

  32. I think the public's tolerance for risk vs. continued willingness to accept limitations on personal freedom will flip by the beginning of August, if not beforehand. People are getting more and more stir crazy. They want to get back to work; they want to get back to their social lives. There will come a point in time in the not too distant future where I predict people are going to think the risk of getting the disease is not significant enough to justify remaining home from things they want to do. I think you can talk people into making small sacrifices for an extended period of time or really big sacrifices for a small amount of time. But I don't think the public has the stomach for really big sacrifices for an extended period of time unless people are dropping like flies. So ... I think the season goes off as planned. There might be a slight delay if schools don't open up to students until the start of classes. That puts programs behind in conditioning and they might make up for it by pushing back the start of the season just a touch. But I'm going to say it'll be a go and people will be in the mood for some entertainment.

  36. I can get behind some of that but I doubt anyone truly believed Thor would be considered "as expected". That was one guy most people wanted to move on. He then goes on to be towards the top of league in 3 pt shooting. If anyone expected that you should be in Vegas.

  39. I'm fairly indifferent on Cross. Over a ten-game stretch, he'd have 7 bad games to have 1 great one to go with maybe 2 'good' games in the process. I hope he figures out what he wants out of his college experience. It will be fine at NU whether Kevin was a part of it or not. . .

    Kevin Cross is leaving

I really liked Cross. He was a bit feast or famine but he was a true freshmen playing with a bunch of guys who just showed up in the fall, including the coaches. He had a chance to be a solid contributor but the reality is he was being over recruited, which is the coaches job. Cross was maybe 6’6” which was always going to be an obstacle to overcome. At least he gave us a few bright spots in a pretty dismal season. Best of luck young man!

    Fast forward a year

Visually, you could see him making difficult passes to get teammates an easy bucket. Statistically he was third on the team behind Mack and Green, PGs, in assist %. Him at the 4 when he's not trying to bait a slow center out of the paint might naturally rein in his shot. We also might coach him down a bit with better options. Feels like he's playing major minutes between the 4 and 5 next year assuming he's here (after last year I'm not going to assume anyone except Thor will be here this year )
