  1. Below are NE stats for the game against Ohio State. In the far right column I have added how many points each player had at the end of the first half. In the 3rd quarter plus fourth quarter plus the overtime, NE only scored 25 points. Whitish and Brown each scored 6 after the half and Cain only 4!! Haiby only 2, Bourne 3, and Verbeek none! I reviewed the play by play by play information and found that from the end of the first half, the team missed 11 three pointers and only made 2! I also counted the missed jump shots which totaled 7 and the missed layups which totaled 15!!!!!! Some of those were contested or non-called fouls but non-the-less far too many missed shots!!!!!! What is also disturbing is the coaching staff's failure to call a time out to right the ship until 1:40 was left in regulation!!!!!!! With 3:48 left in the 3rd quarter, Ohio State had closed the NE lead to 55-51 but no time called by then!!! In the fourth quarter at 6:35 left, Ohio State had again closed the gap to 4 points at the 7:01 mark in the 4th quarter and subsequently to 2 points at 61-59 at 5:39. So a first time out was finally called at 1:40 in the 4th quarter with NE up 68-66!!! Nebraska was out-rebounded again 64-49; had 4 more turnovers at 18; had 9 steals to their 13; and likely only stat won was blocks 12 to 9. Other posts above mentioned looking at possible assistant changes. At some point, the head coach has to be held accountable for the less than desired performances at Michigan State, Minnesota, and this last Ohio State game!!!!! The coaches either need to get with it or get if they can not coach the players up plus recruit more quickness!!! The team continues with a weaker overall shooting percentage (too many missed lay ups) (3 point % is relatively better); Scoring average below opponents so defense needs to improve. Offensive rebounding remains weak. Assists level is below opponents level. Turnovers are 38 above opponents level. Steals 222 below opponents 92 level. Blocks are 20 above opponents. Team play and coaching all need to improve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. All the chatter here.....perplexing In the last game we turned the ball over way way to much with poor passing, and just loosing the ball because of insufficient ball security. And... shooting that was disappointing....with out saying much else about it. We've lost to teams with talented players and excellent ball handlers ...and.... quick defenses that put pressure on us defensibly and we've struggled to overcome. it will be a tough road from here on out. I'will continue to be behind the team...not a band wagon fan when things are only going great.

  8. I'm pretty sure I disagree on the McDermott opinion here. He's squandered an embarrassing amount of talent in his time. NBA lottery picks, a Wooden Award winner and he's 3-8 in his career in NCAA Tourney games...never advancing past the second round.

  9. That system or an offshoot of it is pretty much run by almost everybody today. So when someone wins the Final Four then it has been effective in a tournament setting (maybe not Virginia). You might guess that I am a fan of Dean Smith and I've only ever heard the credit for the secondary going to Roy. That's why the secondary first run at UNC is known as KU across the country. I heard Coach Smith speak in coaching clinics and he has always been quick to give that credit to Coach Williams.

FT percentages for our three JUCO commits: Tominaga 41-of-49 for 83.7 percent Mayen 48-of-57 for 84.2 percent Allen 145-of-161 for 90.1 percent Our top three FT shooters by number of attempts this year: Mack 50-of-87 for 57.5 percent Cheatham 55-of-85 for 64.7 percent Burke 35-of-65 for 53.8 percent The only players with percentages higher than 65 percent are Thor (69 percent), Easley (69) and Kavas (68), but they have combined for a total of only 64 attempts on the season, and Kavas is now an empty-the-bench late-game sub. Career FT percentages of our three transfer sit-out players: Stevenson 68-of-113 for 60.3 percent Walker 15-of-44 for 34.1 percent Banton 19-of-34 for 55.9 percent

  13. Both of you are correct... But at the risk of being banned from the board - Coach McDermott is a really good coach, and a great person. Living in Omaha I have had the pleasure of being able to attend many of his practices. He's really, really good. Just hasn't gotten it done in March and obviously Iowa State wasn't a good fit.

  15. Calling Roy overrated is a bit much, IMO. I won't repeat what Dean said, but he's correct. Roy is currently a victim of the current generation of kids and the landscape of the college game. He hasn't figured it out like Coach K has. You have no idea how much that pained me to say that. Roy would much rather prefer kids he's recruited and kept around for 2-4 years. This current model is not conducive to his style and strengths. I'm actually surprised that he has gone down this road like he has... it seems half-hearted and he's clearly not enjoying it. Speaking of overrated - Cole Anthony makes me vomit. Hot take - Coach K for overrated. How many times has that guy got beaten the same exact way and never adjusted? How much NBA or senior lead teams has he squandered before the Sweet 16? Dude should have double digit NCAA titles by now. He has done absolutely nothing to innovate the game. I've always heard rumblings that (before the one and done era), behind closed doors, Coach K is more Bobby Knight than Bobby Knight is. He's obviously changed. I'm slightly kidding regarding being overrated of course, but I will say that Coach K's biggest strength has always been creating an environment where players are forced to lead and buy-in. I've never heard a lot of people go, "let's run what Duke is running," etc... Underrated....... Hmmmm........ Randy Bennet - St. Mary's Buzz Williams - wherever he's at now Leonard the frickin man Hamilton - FSU, and apparently he's 71 but doesn't look older than 50 Bob Huggins - WV But my two main ones might be Mike Brey - ND and Jay Wright - Nova. Both of these guys are constantly doing things that other coaches are stealing. Wright is obviously going to go down as one of the GOATs before it's all said and done.

  16. Never said they desired pity. Too strong a word, and it is your word, not mine or the original poster. You of all people should not take things way out of context and overstate it. The players should be commended for sticking with their commitment. It has worked out OK from a basketball standpoint; they played, they contributed a lot. But the program they committed to was not the one they got, due to the rogue actions of an incompetent AD. Doesn't mean all is lost and no one said it was. If a player or fan had some feeling of "disappointment" that it turned out like it did it would be understandable. I know of one parent of a player who has some of those feelings. You probably shouldn't claim to know exactly how they all feel. A balanced perspective can include different sentiments on what all has happened. In any event, the seniors and their parents have every right to be proud of how they handled everything and what they contributed. I don't think that is inconsistent with what the original poster stated.

  17. I want to see our team play with heart for the whole game. I would be happy even with a loss if they came to play all game long. I really do not think we see a lineup change. Maybe start our regular five and then change it up come the second half based on their first half play. Be quicker to call a time out to stop a run by Iowa.

  20. Roy Williams has over 880 wins. Roy Williams has three national championships to his record. It was Roy Williams as an assistant at UNC for Dean Smith that created the "secondary fastbreak." Now who actually thought of something first is always debatable in basketball. Bring up who started the flex in South Dakota and Minnesota and you might see a fist fight break out. But it was at UNC that if became a thing and spread through basketball. Wooden made the primary fastbreak a good thing and Roy Williams revolutionized and gave us the current game of basketball heavy on transition and flow through early offense. The style of play Fred likes, the emphasis on the transition in today's game, all that has Roy's fingerprints all over it. Roy is certainly not underrated. He gets a ton of recognition. But he isn't overrated either. When you take in account how much he has influenced the modern game you might say he is under appreciated.

  21. I remember posting something last year about us not seeming to go after loose balls aggressively a lot of the time. I think I simply said GO GET THE BALL!!!!!!! It does not have eyes and is not coming to you. I wish we could instill more aggressiveness in that area. Same thing for rebounding. Gotta really want the ball. Don't just stand and look up. Don't mean to sound critical but I don't get what I'm seeing in these areas. GO HUSKERS!!

  22. iowa is hard to beat at home this season. maybe they are due for a stumble? huskers can't afford to "throw away" a quarter @ iowa. gonna have to play a complete game, or very close to one for a shot at walking away with a 'w'. plus, iowa is going to want "payback". rebound, rebound, rebound-----and chase down at least some of those loose balls if opportunity arises. huskers may not come away with a win, but if nothing else, want to see them compete the whole game and at least be in the game at the end.

  23. You can declare for the draft, not get selected, and go back, right? Cam is having the sort of year where he certainly will put his feet in those waters. He's obviously talented and a future pro at some level but there are a lot of talented PGs out there and a decent number of them are more physically gifted and/or consistent. No doubt he's going to be a guy who works out for scouts who tell him he needs to go back to school and do X and Y better. I guess we'll see if he can respond any better than he does on the court when things aren't going his way. I very well might have no idea what I"m talking about but that's going to be where he finds himself this June after his name isn't called.

  25. The recent Omaha World Herald story on Cam Mack would suggest that he has an excellent opportunity to get drafted sooner rather than later. If that happens, we should all cheer, because that will confirm Hoiberg's continuing ability to get players to the next level--which will boost future recruiting efforts.

    Whittish vs. Doyle

just a guess, but, wondering if staff (with possibly advice from professionals) hope the combination of surgery and a season off will help her future? asked this before, but, can't remember if anyone responded.....but, i wonder just how much helms was involved in practice? i'll stay with my assumption that i believe we are seeing something similar to RB43....a chronic condition that will limit availability or even being able to play at all. again, i am just going by what i have read about the condition. the staff surely has to realize they are going to have to go out and find the best pg available-----you just can't gamble on helms being able to take over the duties.

  27. We seem to be challenged by basic fundamentals of the game. Rebounding and defensive positioning. Offensive spacing and flow. Forced, and ill advised passes. Careless dribbling. Turnovers galore. Value the possession. These are recurring concerns. Regardless of athleticism, sound basketball can be taught. Not seeing it on the court. No amount of senior leadership, is going to fix this overnight.

  28. Doyle is a smart basketball player. She has played under more control this year. Understands the crew calling the game and uses them to her and Iowa's advantage. Also knows when to push and when to setup the offense. She was a big loss for NE.

    Whittish vs. Doyle

I have often thought about this as well. Thanks for bringing it up. In Doyle we would have a fiery and scrappy point guard that plays tough defense and is smart in knowing when to take it to the hoop and how to pass on the inside. Basically she has improved every year which is what you want out of all your players. She relishes the physicality of the point guard position and is a real leader. Hannah is much better suited to be a shooting guard and I think that is what she probably was recruited for initially. This year Doyle has done a better job of keeping her temper under control which has really paid off for Iowa. Some posters may not like to talk about what if but I feel it's fair game since she was committed here at one time. I drove past Clafin Ks. today and thought about Emily Ryan from there and think we will really regret not getting her. Going forward we need to recruit a top point guard if we are going to elevate this program.
