  1. Thank you Nicea...you saved us ! 15 rebounds..and was a big disrupter on defense. Help us stay in the game...and bust it open late. Our zone slowed them down. Excellent at the free throw line tonight...kept us in the game Leigha loves this kind of game....lets her play free We finally wore them out a bit

  2. Nothing new. As in no news. Either way. Could be he gets a waiver, but perhaps not. We don't yet know. And no one with any authority has said anything official. Yet. Not even Bryan Rosenthal. As soon as I hear something, I'll post it here. If anyone else hears something definitive first, feel free to "beat me to the punch." For the love of all things Holy, please do not "bump" this thread with impertinent responses. Those of us who've been suckered into clicking the "Shamiel is N" thread thank you in advance.

  3. A few rebuttals.... Hoiberg has never recruited centers who are three point shooters. That’s a misconception that Chris Heady keeps writing in his articles, but it’s not true. His ideal player archetype for a center is Jameel McKay. McKay could’ve been described how you described Yvan and Walker (couldn’t shoot or dribble, undersized). But he’s what Hoiberg wanted in an athletic, rim-running, rim-protecting big whose main role on offense was to set screens and get offensive putbacks. That’s not to say he wouldn’t like to have a big who can shoot, but he never recruited one at Iowa State (Vanderbeken was a McDermott recruit). They would go 5 out at times with guys like Niang and White as their biggest player on the floor, causing mismatches. Banton and Cross fit that mold. They are still recruiting for 2020. It’s not abnormal to not sign any players in the early signing period. Doc doesn’t run the packline. It has packline principles, and he wants to keep the offense out of the lane, but it isn’t the pure pack. Doc wants to get out into passing lanes and harass ball-handlers to force turnovers, but you can’t do that as much without a rim protector to erase mistakes. We’ve offered a lot of bigs in the 2020 and 2021 classes who fit the mold of what we want on both ends of the court.

  4. That's not really true, though. Every single player in the rotation, including Kavas who is shooting 40% from 3, is shooting significantly below their career number. Kavas is about 5% below his numbers. But when I look at Mack, Green, Cheatham, Burke and Curtis, they're all at least 15% below what they shot at their previous stop. This isn't an ability issue. It's a familiarity and comfort issue. As they get more used to playing with each other and at this level, those numbers will most likely return to their career numbers. It doesn't always happen, but it's very likely that most of them will. We're still in small sample size territory. There was going to be a two game stretch where they shot like this somewhere in the season. Probably more than one. I haven't really seen anyone on the floor this year I'd trade for Harris, though.

  5. Homered ? ...no Morgan St's type of play leads to committing many fouls. I'm glad the fouls were called, and yes, and frankly...many were missed by the refs. I used to hate having my teams play other teams with their focus was on disruption and chaos. Constant fouling when trying to steal the ball, rebounding, etc. Many refs (lower levels of play - non college) wouldn't/couldn't call all the fouls. Luckily, we made an excellent percentage of the free throws...80% The difference in the game in terms of keeping us in the game when our shooting wasn't the greatest. Morgan St did shoot well at times...was a little surprised by that. They will win lots of games.

  7. Nice to see the Huskers pull away late. This team needs to learn that they can respond to adversity and keep their poise.

  8. Morgan State brought it, all night long. This should be a good experience for our ladies. Good to see them pull away in the 4th quarter. 15 boards and 12 points for Nicea. Nice double double. Great night at the foul line for the team.

  12. For a lightly regarded team, I was impressed with Morgan State. They worked their fannies off on the defensive end. They also crashed the boards on both ends. Good to see our depth prevail. There was quite a discrepancy at the line, but don't think they were "homered" in any way. If anything, they got away with quite a few fouls in the paint. They also threw up quite a few prayers, that managed to bounce off the glass and find the hoop. Well done ladies, Bears and Huskers.

  14. I’ve been following Donovan on twitter for quite some time. I’d be shocked as he is literally one of the most proactive recruiters of other players and always tweeting at guys to come to NU. He was at the scrimmage and I saw him speaking with a few assistants, and during Hunter’s visit, he was there as well.

  16. This year has not gotten off to a great start. Given how big-time of a coach we secured, I don't think anyone assumed we'd start off 0-2 against some pretty poor teams. However, it took me about 2 minutes into the scrimmage to know that this was going to be a team who would struggle. We're skinny, inexperienced as a team, young in most places, have zero height or post players. JUCOs typically struggle to translate in their first year. We start a 17 year old. I guessed 16 total wins this year, and I'm even starting to doubt that. But guess what... it doesn't matter. Fred Hoiberg is a special coach. I have seen some things thus far that have me incredibly excited for the future of this program. Thought I would lay a few out for you all. 1. We run. Make or miss we run. It has been something I have been screaming about for years now. Wings... Must... Run. Bigs who don't get rebounds... Must... Run. Running doesn't mean you have to play fast or take bad, early shots. But it exhausts the defense and always pays off eventually. If you guys have noticed, our wings run straight to the corner and get wide early, right off the break - make or miss. Our bigs are attempting to rim run every time. I love it. It's literally the most important thing to an effective offense getting off to a good start on a possession. It sucks the defense in, then forces them to boomerang back out to close-out, which creates dribble drives and eventual shots. The biggest misconception of our offense and of an offense like Creighton's is that you can't be efficient or get shots late while running. It's just not true. You can run, and drag possessions out. They are not mutually exclusive. 2. The Xs and Os are there. You just can't see it yet. Timing isn't there, fluidity hasn't been achieved, and they're still thinking. I love the free-flowing, ball-screen, dribble drive motion that Hoiberg runs. Also, his sets so far are fantastic (we just can't execute them yet). They're simple, but get you moving. They emphasize spacing and match-ups. He really puts you in a "choose your own death" position on each set. Once the guys pick these up, you'll see. Watch for when Hoiberg holds up a 5 and does a "slice" motion. I believe they literally call this 5-Slice. When I am able to see it again, I will attempt to draw it up. It starts with some purposeful cutting that forces defenders to stick to their man, then hits you with a well timed ball screen that help just can't get to. We've ran it a couple times, but with poor execution and timing. He's also ran some really simple, effective sets against zone that we haven't executed. 3. He Demands respect. One of the toughest things about coaching these days is that you don't know how much you can lean on players and keep them around. Unlike Miles (and I don't fault him for this), Hoiberg just seems to demand respect from his players. His resume and career speak for themselves, so when he says something, you have to listen. It's probably one of the more unfortunate and toughest things about coaching - sometimes you can't get what you want until you've had some success and the players just don't second guess you. For what it is worth, I'm not trying to criticize Miles, as I believe I had this issue as a coach too. It's just something natural about a person that commands respect, and it's hard to cultivate out of nothing. You have to earn it, and often times it's earned by things that really weren't and aren't in your control. God made some men 6'5", square-jawed, and athletic. Some men (myself), he did not. Unfortunately sometimes those things command respect and you can't control it. When things get tough, and players are looking for excuses, having a coach who might be inexperienced/unsuccessful/didn't play pro/etc... can be an easy outlet. But when your coach is Fred Hoiberg, who's had success everywhere, played in the NBA, all the ladies want him and guys want to be him - you don't fall for those easy excuse traps. 4. I just love seeing Doc on the sideline. That's it, just that.

  17. It could be he’s waiting to sign until after his knee is rehabbed, it’s not a great injury to come back from and he’s seeing if he’d be able to play. As of now we are his best offer, so unless we learn something soon that someone else offered I’m not to worried.

  35. no one likes taking a mulligan for a full season, but this is just one of those exceptions. i still think that given how disappointing last season was, having two brutal seasons like this in a row is tough to stomach. but we'll get thru them. just support these guys the best we can as long as they're trying. and get used to a lot of sardonic humor from a few of us. :)

  43. University of Miami, 1985-86. They re-booted the program and that was the first year back after 15. However, they used 1984-85 to scrimmage and practice together, but they didn't play a game until the next year. BTW, the 'Canes won their first three games, including an upset of Georgia. Another fun note: the 'Canes played their first few seasons in a convention center auditorium called the Knight Center. Almost all of the seats were on one side, and they put some bleachers on a stage on the other side of the floor. The most bizarre basketball setting I ever witnessed.

    Iowa nabs....

imo, i read one of the goofiest articles about iowa's bluder. said something along the lines of yes, there is McGraw and Auriemma. if bluder had those type of players at iowa she would have a national championship too---she is one of the best coaches in the country (according to the article). well, crap--------give that kind of talent to just about any coach they probably would have a national championship under their belt too. my word. that just didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Correct. I think it's highly likely that neither Kavas nor Cheatham will be back next year. I should add: this is not based on inside information; just an educated guess.
