  1. I simultaneously think we will get better and that our level of play in the first game was sub-par for any scenario of any team we put on the court.

  3. Did not get to see the game. Listened to it on the radio and I have a few take aways. Loved the way Hannah picked up her game on defensive end. Career high five take aways ( nicely played). The way the two sophs. took over the game offensively, awesome cause those are the two we should want taking over. In truth with Nicea out, when they took the lead, I thought we were going to lose. Our mental toughness is at a much higher level this year. Finally, huge win they are going to be atop 50 rpi team and we won in their house.

  4. Three things from the today, FT shooting % was @ 71 & we had more Offensive rebounds than Missouri 14 to 10 plus the TO's were 13 to 19 in our favor. good to see improvement in those areas. With Mizzou being a defensive pressure team, the turnovers were a good sign.

Gotta be honest, even with the 0-2 start against buy-in opponents, I expected more patience and perspective around here. I mean...for goodness sakes. You are a Nebraska BASKETBALL fan. Pull yourself together. You have been through decades upon decades of disappointment and heartbreak. You are still here cheering. Don’t lose your resolve now after a couple losses. We got a real legitimate basketball coach. He’s drawing up plays that would work. His schemes are solid - great, even. But absolutely nothing works in basketball if you cannot shoot the basketball. And holy poop, we can’t. We can’t make layups, we can’t make free throws, we can’t make uncontested 3s. This is not a scheme issue. This is not an effort issue. I see the kids playing hard. They want to do well. The only solution to our issues are talent and time. We need both. A lot of both. Fred pulled a miracle to even manage a full roster given the time he had to work with. These are not cream of the crop recruits. And CBB recruiting is like a 2-3 year cycle. Relationships take time. I doubt most of these kids would have been a first choice for Fred. But here we are. But time is even more important. For a majority of the active roster, this is their first D1 experience. You know how when you pick up a couple freshmen and you have to slowly ease them into the season? That’s essentially our whole roster. Mack, Green, Drago, Cross, Curtis...these guys are all playing their first D1 minutes...ever. Even your grad transfers, Kavas and Cheatham, were both dealing with injuries last year. And they are adjusting to a new team. That doesn’t happen overnight. Burke hadn’t played a live game in two years and his off year was with a different coach and different teammates. And that might be the biggest thing. Team chemistry. Knowing roles. The kids don’t know, and Fred doesn’t even know yet. Who can he count on? Who should he send to the line to shoot a technical FT? Who is clutch? Who do you want taking the last shot? Who is your best defender? Who can get a rebound? There’s no magic formula. That all reveals itself over time. View all these losses as learning experiences. Some of these players will return next year. They will benefit from this process. Fred will learn his team better. I guarantee he knows his squad better today than before the season. And here’s the thing...they will get better. This team isn’t going winless. Have patience. You’ve been through worse. And it will all be worth it. RDK

  7. Here are the numbers to back up what some of you might not get to see since most of the games have been on pay TV: we're really, really struggling to score in our half court offense. Via hoops-math.com: "Transition shots are defined as occuring within the first 10 seconds of a possession after a steal, defensive rebound, or opponent score." Transition offense: 37.7% of our shots, 58.1 eFG% Other "half court" offense: 62.3% percent of our shots, 26.33 eFG% In other words, when we have to execute our offense against a set defense, we really, really struggle to score. Couple of good news items to grab from here I think we can maintain at least a 30% share of our offense in transition. It's definitely our focus so I don't expect us to slow down even when teams sell out to try and force us to You have to think that our lack of execution/shooting on the offensive end has to be in part because of the unfamiliarity of the system. It would stand to reason that this team should become better throughout the year at executing. The real question is where we will fall between 'marginally better' and 'markedly better'

  10. Might just be an Amy decision. Bourne brings some additional depth. Missouri wasn't dominant in the post. The more athletic post players might be what the game called for yesterday. Good results, regardless.

  11. I don’t think she is hurt guys. I think she is a freshman and we have experienced good guards and it was a big game. She will get opportunities in some of these non conference games. On good teams freshman don’t automaticlaly come n and play immediately. Especially small guards. With Hannah Sam Leigha nicea and Taylor 5 experienced good perimeter players for 3 spots there won’t b a ton of extra minutes for others early on

Is anyone making the argument that this team will not improve over the course of Hoiberg's tenure?

  15. I think people underestimate the value of experience. Unless you have 1-and-done players (we're not Kentucky) then there's no substitute for experience. I learned my lesson once when I made a bet with @NUdiehard that we would have at least a 2-game improvement in our record with the addition of size from Jorge Brian Diaz after the year where Ryan Anderson and Ade Daguduro were our starting frontcourt. Guess what, we were worse. Even though we had a very talented 6'11 center who could score. You just can't substitute for experience. So, while things are going poorly right now, give it time. Our record isn't an indictment on the talent of our players or the skill of our coaching staff or anything other than our youth and inexperience. It's gonna take some time. I'm not even interested in what our final record will be this year.

  17. A couple things... IF, and it's a BIG IF, we start to hit 3's at an average clip, somewhere in the low 30s, as well as start to convert our atrocious % from 5 feet and in, we are going to be alright. 2nd, our guys will take leaps forward throughout the year. Just look at Cross from game 1 to 2, and SUU was way better than C-R. Lastly, one thing that isn't being talked about enough is that our potentially best player (I'd argue top 3 for sure) still hasn't played a game and will most likely have a tremendous impact once eligible. Sucky start, absolutely, but please, if anyone is near a ledge, game 2, year 1, yikes, your expectations are UNREALISTIC. You've clearly forgotten we're historically insignificant, and that this will take time. If this was year 3 or 4, then I'd understand panic. Just enjoy the little things like guys getting better and pulling off a couple upsets.

Correct. I think it's highly likely that neither Kavas nor Cheatham will be back next year. I should add: this is not based on inside information; just an educated guess.

  21. I hate losing, but I saw some encouraging things today. I thought S. Utah was better than UC Riverside. The Martin kid was a legit player who could help many power 6 teams. They returned four starters and they had some nice pieces. The biggest positives were Cam and Cross. Cam showed the ability to take over a game during a stretch of the second half where we needed someone to step up. When he gets more game experience and improves his shot, he will be tough to handle. With better offensive options on the court in his supporting cast, he'll be even more dangerous. Cross was also solid. He battled and showed some real talents on the offensive end. He can put it on the floor and he showed he can score in the post. Again, with experience and work in the weight room, he's gonna be a steal. Most of our production came from guys who have now played only 2 division 1 games. We will take our lumps this year, but I saw objective improvement from game 1 to game 2. I haven't seen Stevenson play, but I gotta think he is going to be a major contributor and will help out in guarding guys like Martin and giving us another viable offensive option. He will no doubt be better than what we're playing at the 4 right now. Poor Kavas has a terrible time guarding people, and I don't see him getting major minutes down the road unless he starts lighting it up from 3. With Banton and Walker next year, we will take a step forward. And I'm sure Matt A. has a transfer or two in his sights, so more help will likely be on the way. i will embrace the suck for now and will trust that Fred will take us to another level in the not so distant future.

  22. I think this team will be the least successful in modern NU history. Green and Mack were right about the rebounding and it will only get worse as the quality of teams improves. The team's chance at being decent this year ended when the seven footer, Jace Johnson chose Marquette over NU. There were a couple other whiffs on post players- what is it about NU and the lack of inside players? It shocks me that Hoiberg thought the team had a chance to be good without being able to rebound.... Nevertheless, I will stand with the Huskers this year despite the likelihood of going through the conference winless. Yes we should have a chance to knock off Northwestern on March 1 in Lincoln. My primary worry is how this might impact recruiting. I hope the awfulness of this year's squad doesn't scare off Sallis, and the other highly rated post players considering NU. I'm an old man who has been supporting NU in vain for decades so the transition from the recruiting season which opened with some promise quickly transforms into that horrible, sinking feeling many of us know too well.

  23. Well, this season sure hadn't gotten off to the start we'd all hoped for. This team has the talent to win some games. I firmly believe that, but they're gonna need some success soon or it is gonna unravel on them in a hurry. A roster where everyone is new to each other sometimes doesn't have much holding them together. They need to see themselves be able to face adversity and have some success doing it. Tonight was almost it. That Green 3 at the end of regulation was pretty cool. We left so many points at the line down the stretch... We got our first glimpse of the flopping technical foul. I believe Thor got the game warning somewhere in the first half. And what a spot for SUU to get called for it. I like Kevin Cross in the paint. I think he does a good job of finishing at the rim. I don't like him around the perimeter. The defense was a lot better today. It got out of sorts a bit down the stretch, though, but I though early and throughout much of the first half it was pretty good. I thought SUU had some pretty good players on their roster. The crowd was pretty engaged today. I was expecting a pretty sleepy arena. We had a whole bunch of kids around us who either don't go to many games of they've ever been to a game, but they were totally into it. I was surprised Yvan didn't get into the game down the stretch. Did he play at all in the second half? Would have liked to see more of Curtis, too. This team might not win many games this year. Probably good to start accepting that. But I hope we see them improve game to game. I do think we saw that from Tuesday to today. Shame we didn't see them pick up a win or two this week. Kavas is gonna have to start hitting some shots or he's not gonna see the floor much... I thought we saw flashes of what we've hard about both Green and Mack being today. That's all I got at the moment...

They gave up 110 to Iowa State in their first game and 134 to Central Michigan yesterday. Currently they are giving up 129 PPG while scoring just 67 PPG

  26. Kate Cain is a Blocking Machine (officially credited with two; I'm sure I heard Matt & Jeff give her credit with lots more, seems like every time one turned around they'd say another Block), but I'd like to see her become more of a 'Scoring' Machine too (1-8) . A little more consistency could have kept the game out of reach. I'll have to re-watch the game but I read somewhere that Kate likes to receive the ball high, Isabelle Bourne seems to be one who can put it where Kate likes it.

It's all projection from the Husker Football season. Most would have been totally fine and understanding this year if football was even remotely relevant.

  32. man, don't want to be negative------but, with her physical ailment it raises some questions. i think if she could play, she would have been in there. idk, just hoping it isn't related. wonder how much she practices? i know it has been discussed in an earlier post, but, from everything i have read about the condition, i am just afraid we may be seeing a similar RB43 situation. also, didn't T. Brady have lingering problems from a car accident? sure hoping her concussion problem isn't related. fingers crossed for both of these players. i sure am hoping for the best!

  34. Not sure I'd call it proof...yet... The common belief is that it typically takes 10-15 games for JUCO players to adjust to the D1 level. A 2 game sample for all of those guys is really small. It's probably worth holding off judgment on any of these guys just yet. This is the one area I've been pleased with how Cross has done so far. He's handled his shots around the rim pretty well. The guards will learn how to finish through that kind of traffic over time. I remember Tai getting swallowed at the rim his freshman year. By the time he left, he'd become excellent around the rim. Give the guys some time. They'll get it.

  36. not much to do with this season but look for signs of improvement. I mostly want to see how this staff teaches together and/or the talent level of the players that are going to be here for a bit relative to the conference. We're probably looking at a 5 or 6 win season right now.

  44. IDK, I guess if you can draw up a play to get the ball to within a foot of the rim and a clean look, I'd take that every time over a jumper. A bit better of a pass and maybe a hard lesson for Jervay to learn about trying to do too much in that sitautation and we're having a different conversation.

  45. Gosh, it was such a pretty play. I'm fairly confident he drew up a lob. Just didn't quite execute the ending. Everything that led up to it was just masterful. Shame it didn't work out in the end. He's drawn up a number of things like this out of deadballs. I'm quite excited about seeing more of this over the years.

  46. Post Game Notes from UNL Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg On the contest I thought our guys really went out and competed today. I thought we got off to a great start. We challenged them the last few days to put that last frustrating loss behind us, and they responded with great energy. I thought we had a good play drawn up at the end, but unfortunately just didn’t finish it. The competitive spirit of this group was where it needed to be today, and it’s something we can build on.” On Kevin Cross’ performance “Look at what Kevin did today, I thought he was one of the best players on the floor for us. He was finishing, he’s got a good feel in the middle of that zone. We felt Kevin was the guy to have out there. I’ll say this about Kevin, he’s really bought into getting his body right so he could play sustained minutes tonight.” On how Cam Mack facilitated the game “He had a stretch where he was just incredible. He completely took over the game and that’s what he’s capable of doing. He’s got great speed and instincts. He’s got good pace to get a guy on his hip and make the right play. To go out there in his second game at this level and almost put a triple-double on the board is pretty impressive.” On getting better “If we continue to take steps, the results will take care of themselves. That’s the biggest thing for our group right now, to continue to go out there and battle. I’m proud of the way they went out there and battled and fought. [SUU] is a good team. They’re long, they’re athletic and look like a lot of Big Ten teams will. Now that we’ve seen that length, hopefully we’ll be better next time we see it.” Junior Guard Jervay Green On the offensive struggles late in the game: “I just think we didn’t execute. But as we go on, and we get back to the drawing boards we are going to fix all of that.” On his buzzer beater to send the game into overtime: “Great point guard gave me the ball. I saw the time was going down and just shot it. And made it.” On how the end of regulation effected the momentum for the team: “It’s big. Obviously the first game didn’t go how we wanted it to so for us to even come close like that it feels great. And we are a new team so we are still trying to find the rhythm of each other. I think we took a huge step forward. We are going to keep working. and we are going to get that game and we going to start winning here soon.” On Kevin Cross: “Kevin played great. He played big. He’s not used to playing center. Obviously in high school, he could dribble real good so for him to even be switching that up is big and he is doing a very good job. Hats off for him today. He came up big.” Sophomore Guard Cam Mack On taking a step forward from the last game: “I mean I feel like we took a step forward, but when it came down to it we should have won that game. We should have just won the game. I mean we didn’t execute well (enough). I didn’t come through making my two free throws so I took the blame on that. But we just didn’t execute. That’s all it is.” On Kevin Cross’ performance “Kevin is a great player. (After the) Last game, I told him you miss shots you make some so keep shooting and stuff will come. I’m proud of him. He is a freshman so I am very proud of him. He played big minutes and caught a lot of my passes. I really appreciate him a lot.” Southern Utah Head Coach Todd Simon Opening Statement “It was an exciting college basketball game. Any time you get one of these two overtime deals, it’s a highly contested game with two teams who wanted to win. I thought they played really hard. Coach Hoiberg does a heck of a job, and he’s going to build this thing into a big-time winner. I was proud of our guys’ resilience. They kind of kept coming back and made some plays down the stretch.” On how SUU responded in the second half “We didn’t execute great in the first half. I thought we had a lot of open looks. We were a little nervous and we fired some shots that we normally make. We were a little antsy around the rim. We calmed down and did a much better job executing late in the second half and in the overtimes.” On how SUU responded to the tying buzzer beater “It was a good teaching moment for us. Our game plan was to foul, and we didn’t execute. It was a lesson learned. We’re always going to foul in that situation, and we didn’t get it done, and that’s what can happen. I was proud of our guys, to be able to buckle back down and come back out and play 10 more good minutes of basketball.”
