Non Con Slate is Out

Iowa played ISU, UConn, Syracuse and NOBODY ELSE in the non-con last year, went 10-10 in the Big Ten, went 1-1 in the conference tournament and played as a 10th seed in the NCAA Tournament. If we find ourselves at 10-10 in the conference and we've beaten Creighton, Georgia Tech and NMSU in the non-conference, we're probably in the same spot.3 points -
I will be excited to watch every single one of those non con games, tbh. Shiny new coach and team, etc.3 points

Sure the quality of teams is primarily because of Hoiberg's first year. But the structure isn't. You don't think the athletic dept needs to have X number of home games? Trust me, they do. If you must have 16-17 home games to make budget, your non-con schedule has very little flexibility. You can't just "roll the dice" when big budgets are involved. Heck, they expected to play 17 home games this season till the league surprised them with a ACC challenge trip to Ga Tech. I'd imagine that screwed up some budget assumptions pretty substantially when you're taking in $500K-$700K per home game just on tickets. And that blue team is a terrible example. That blue team doesn't play two conference challenge games where the league dictates home or away; only one challenge. And that blue team only plays 18 conference games. Gives that blue team much more flexibility. If NU had only 18 conf games and only 1 mandated non-con game, we'd play more home and homes ... like we did when we first joined the B1G. Huge difference between 19 conference mandated games and 21-22 conference mandated games when you need to have X number of home games. It's no coincidence we haven't announced a new home and home since the B1G went to 20 conference games. I'd imagine in the future, once Hoiberg's teams are established, we'll upgrade the schedule by either ditching the in-season tournament for a couple of years to play a couple of home and homes or a couple of TV-mandated neutral site games, or try to play in an in-season tournament that has a higher level of opponents. Or we may have to ask to have the game with that blue team count as a Gavitt Game in the future to provide a bit more wiggle room in the schedule. But home and homes like Kansas are going to be rare with 20 conference games and an in-season tournament on the schedule.2 points -
Totally fine with this schedule. So many new faces and roles to sort out. With the trip to Italy and this type of non-con, we should have a lot of things figured out in time for the Big Ten play.2 points

It's a bad home non-con schedule, but this is also what can happen when you have 20 conference games and the conference dictates 1 or 2 of your non-con games too (ACC & BE challenges). Have to have X number of home games to pay the bills. And it's tough to schedule more than one home and home when you don't know whether you'll be on the road or at home in ACC/BE challenges until early summer. Unfortunately, with 20 conf games and w/ BE & ACC challenges, I suspect we'll see more non-con schedules like this and fewer home and homes with teams like Kansas going forward.2 points

If they can win the first game, I think it's probably likely they get a good game in game two with a shot at a second, which is really all they can hope for.1 point -

It won't be this soft moving forward. Maybe not Kansas (though, I hope we see games like that from time to time...), but you'll see far more challenging schedules as the program develops.1 point -

Something that is enormous for this team is that the foreign trip to Italy in August is gonna give them a chance to play together and get to know each other early on. Hopefully the chemistry at least has begun to develop well by the beginning of non con.1 point -
Maybe I’m just a massive homer, but even with a brand new team that needs name tags for the first month of the season I expect the floor to be something like 16 wins, mostly because the non conference schedule is terrible and we should be much better later in the year.1 point

Definitely a year one schedule for the new regime. Aside from the exhibition, there'll be Nebraska kids on SDSU (Baylor Scheierman from Aurora, David Wingett from Winnebago) and UND (Brady Danielson from York)1 point -

I didn't follow the link, but I was reading something on SB Nation for Rutgers that said, "This article from Omaha.com in late January stated Wur was shooting 61% from three-point range (91-150) at the time." So, I'm happy to report my reading comprehension skills appear OK, but someone at SB Nation might not be able to say the same thing.1 point -

Nebraska can not assume only 1 scholarship could be opened up in a year from now as multiple schollies being available is almost the most likely scenario. The NU coaches have to have contingencies to successfully recruiting a roster, basically performing their due diligence at all times.1 point -

I think one problem we’re having here is people want to fit guys into the old 1,2,3,4,5 slots for a lineup. Basketball today really has 3 positions: the Point, Wings, and Bigs. This offense will certainly have 3 wings playing at the same time quite a bit. My complete guess for a lineup goes: point: Mack Wings: Green, Burke, Cheatham Big: Cross Some guys obviously fit into multiple positions, but it all depends on match ups.1 point -

I don't think Hoiberg signed all these guys based on his starting 5 pitch. I'm guessing he was able to pitch pace of play and how that equates to playing time for damn near everyone who can conceivably contribute meaningful minutes. That's why he had to wipe the roster. We'll go 8-9 deep and expect the players in to not pace themselves. Cheatham will have to play. A lot. I also don't think Samari is coming in to sit this year. I think he'll have a solid amount of true freshman minutes at PG and spotting the other guards. Kavas, Ouedraogo, and Cross will all play a lot. It's going to be a hell of a show. This team is built for speed. We have to keep in mind we haven't seen this sort of pace since, maybe, Nee. Dudes get gassed in it.1 point -

If Stevenson is eligible, that's almost certainly the starting 5 I'd predict. Maybe we'll see them in Italy and Cross and/or Yvan are way better than I expect, but I find it unlikely they're gonna be ready to handle a D1/B1G front court from day one. I think we're gonna go "super small" quite a bit. I think, if both stick around, Cross and Yvan are gonna be a nightmare for B1G opponents for years to come, though, just not likely this November. We'll see about February and March. So, to get it down and official, my starting five is: Mack Green Burke Cheatham Stevenson (assuming eligible) If he's not, IDK, who would jump in. If he is, I'd be more than mildy surprised if it's different than this when we play our first game in November. Maybe Curtis is way better than I realize and he starts from his first on campus. Who really knows?1 point -

You're probably about on it. 17.5. I'm thinking I could see us winning 9 games in conference and finishing around 8th or 9th. I reckon we ought to win about that many non-conference games as well, since the non-con schedule is lining up pretty gentle this year, it seems.1 point -

Agreed. Same as with Cheatham having proven himself in the Big East, Burke has proven himself in Division I ball. Green may hold more promise and may be the sniper we need, but until proven otherwise, I'd go with Burke at the 2, Cheatham at the 3 and Green off the bench, probably playing 25-28 minutes nonetheless. STARTING LINEUP (Solid on both ends) 1. Mack ("I was brought here to run the show.") 2. Burke (Has played Division I ball) 3. Cheatham (Played 2.5 seasons in the Big East) 4. Stevenson (Played 1.5 seasons in the ACC) 5. Ouedraogo (Played in Lithuania once, I heard) FIRST SUBS (Lightning from the bench) 6. Green 7. Kavas NEW WAVE (Just give us 5-10 good minutes) 8. Curtis 9. Cross 10. Thorbjarnarsson WE MAY NEED YOU TONIGHT (But probably not) 11. Arop 12. Piatkowski 13. Easley WE WILL NEED AT PRACTICE (Every damn day) 14. Banton 15. Walker1 point -

Couple things reading through this: I'd almost guarantee Cam, Burke and Green start. Anything beyond that is up in the air. I'd also be interested in seeing a comp between Samari Curtis and Xavier Johnson.1 point
