The good part though is us winning or losing games is going to matter a lot more than any of this

  3. I'm sorry, but are you that out of touch? We had little depth and precious little margin for error. Going into this season, anyone who was paying attention was already concerned about our lack of depth down low. You take a Copeland out of the lineup and what you replace him with is a Brady Heiman. You've gone from a senior, 5-star player to a freshman 3-star whom many people on this board doubted was worthy of a scholarship and many others thought would at least need to redshirt. And you don't think that's going to have an impact? By the way, I'm not a "big Miles fan [who] will loyally defend him to the end." I'm a guy who's been around long enough to see a number of coaching changes and, as often as not, they haven't produced the results we were promised they would. And while I would agree that Miles isn't perfect, he's at least put together a somewhat competitive roster. And he's the ONLY coach we've had THIS CENTURY who has guided us to a better-than-.500 record in league play. And he's done it twice. In six seasons, Doc Sadler reached .500 in league play once; Barry Collier produced losing conference records every year; and Danny Nee's last season was trash. So, in TWENTY seasons this century, we've only gone better than .500 in conference play twice, both times under Miles. You can strive all you want for something better. You have precious little control over it, and by that I mean none at all. And when you say, "I have not seen anything in 7 years that has told me this guy is any different from the last 2" it makes me want to ask you, given what you've described, what makes you so confident that the next one is going to be any better than the last 3?

  4. I am still all in on Tim Miles. I hope we keep him around for a long time and I hope he has success here. I don't expect that we will become a basketball powerhouse over night no matter who the coach is. I remember back when lots of people were calling for Tom Osborne to be fired. He even went to Colorado to check on the head coaching position there because of that. I was here rooting for the huskers when Danny Nee was here. Danny had some really good teams. I was also rooting for the Huskers when Barry Collier was here and when Doc Sadler was our coach. They had limited success but I was rooting for them just like I am rooting for Tim Miles. The difference in the quality of talent we have now compared to what the last two coaches were able to recruit to Nebraska is not even close. I know there are plenty of schools that would take Tim in a second. He recruits well and he does things the right way. The problem with the world of sports today and the world in general is the win at all cost mentality. I hope we can somehow win 3 of our next 5 games and then make some noise in the BIG Ten tournament. I hope we can make it to the NCAA but if we go to the NIT again I will still be rooting for Tim and the team! I hope Tim Miles is our coach for as long as he wants to be here!!! Go Big Red!! I hope I spelled everything correctly...

  5. Perhaps many of us have not explained ourselves effectively. Am I blindly loyal!? Yes, but I am loyal to the university, and to Husker basketball. Coach Miles currently leads his team, and this university. I will loyally support him and this team. If and when Coach Miles moves on, I will then be loyal to the same university and team; it will just be led by a different individual. You and some others seem focused on quitting on this team and this coach prior to the end of the season. Others tend to believe that we can still be relevant despite the seven game losing streak and the absence of one of our top four players.

  6. Yes. And Doc was trashed mercilessly by trolls on this very board who wanted to dance on Doc's (er Kenneth's) proverbial casket on his way out the door, because firing him wasn't enough. No, this was personal. Doc had failed to advance this program into an NCAA tournament team and for that he needed to be ridiculed, mocked, and verbally assaulted, not merely relieved of his duties and sent packing. And for the love of all things holy, the university gave him a RAISE. A RAISE FOR PETE'S SAKE. TO SOMETHING LESS THAN A MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR. So then his buyout was almost half of what Scott Frost gets paid in a year. How could the university possibly be expected to foot that bill? Oh, the insult to humanity that Doc Sadler got a raise to less than half of what we're paying Tim Miles for the same job. I hope some of you people are ashamed of how you acted when Doc got fired. And I further hope you learned something from that experience and don't repeat that assholery if and when Miles leaves.

  7. My vote is for whatever scenario keeps us out of the B1G tourney bunny bracket as winning that game just to get a win probably does nothing for us. We get a 2nd round game against the 7th or 8th team in the conference which should be a combination of impactful and winnable

  10. You mean the only coach to take us to the NCAA tournament in the last 20 years? That guy? You just said that some are so "blindly loyal" that they can't see what is in front of them. Yet you turn right around and are so blind with hatred for the guy that you can't see all the good that he has done for Nebraska basketball.

  11. It was a good weekend for Husker sports. Baseball, softball, mens and womens basketball all won this weekend.

  12. Yeah... some reactions so far have been pretty disappointing. We lose 7 in a row... finally win a couple in a row. Still have a shot at dancing... and people on here talking like their best cow just died.

  13. You know, this post got me thinking. Fans have been labeled as "blindly loyal," but you know what... I'm appreciative that we've had coaches like Doc Sadler who was "blindly loyal" to our university as well to the very end. In an environment where coaches move around, I am very appreciative that we've had some coaches who were fully bought in to the university all the way to the very end.

    New NET Rankings

Probably not really worth updating this without a win Tuesday, but since I'm an eternal optimist... 5 takeaways: Northwestern fell out of Q2 territory after we beat them. That makes our task more difficult. I don't like the way the NET rankings of our opponents are starting to trend (as discussed below). N'western fell out of Q2, and if we beat Iowa and Penn St -- which we need to do -- they may fall to the lower quad also, which would be a huge problem. We're currently 7-11 in NET Q1/Q2 games with 5 chances left plus whatever we get in the B1G tourney ... there's still a shot, but we probably need 3 more Q1 wins or some combination of 4-5 Q1/Q2 wins to feel good. If the NCAA were still using RPI, this season would be over. Our RPI, and the Big Ten's RPI as a whole, stink ... except for Minnesota. The RPI loves the Gophers, so we can deduce: RPI = Jackwagon. We need the teams close to the quad cut off lines to stay on ( or climb to ) the right side - if a few of those don't go our way, we need extra wins from someplace ( i.e., B1G Tourney ). Teams to keep an eye on over the next few weeks: IOWA - #28 now - so it would help us if they stay in the top 30 and make the season finale a Q1 game for us ... of course we also need to win that game, which may knock it down to a Q2 ILLINOIS - #80 now - If they could move into the top 75, that would make our Q2 (L) and Q3 (W) games into Q1/Q2 games PENN ST - #70 now - they need to stay in the top 75 to keep our games as Q1 ( ? ) and Q2 (W) instead of Q2/Q3 games ... again, though, we need to win Tuesday, which may kick them out of the top 75 OKLA ST - #91 now - but they've been falling fast the past few weeks, need them to stay in top 100 to keep that as a Q2 (W) instead of a Q3 N’WESTERN - #77 now - they need to climb back into the top 75 to move our game from Q3 (W) into Q2 CREIGHTON - #63 after another loss at home Sunday – so to stay as Q2 (W) they need to ... ahhh, screw 'em. Don't care if they fall to Q4. Also, Fullerton is close to climbing into Q3 from Q4 , but I don't think the NCAA committee even looks at Q3/Q4 games, so it probably doesn't matter. If all 6 of those teams go our way, we'd be on pace for 25 Q1/Q2 games before the B1G Tourney ---- We'd be 2-9 now in Q1 with 5 games left / 7-2 in Q2 with 0 games left ... this would be really good If all 6 of those teams go against us, we'd drop to on pace for 20 Q1/Q2 games before B1G Tourney ---- We'd be 2-8 now in Q1 with 3 games left / 2-3 in Q2 with 2 games left ... this would almost certainly sink us, barring a miracle 5-0 finish plus a B1G Tourney win or 2 If those 6 teams stay in the quads where they are now, we're on pace for 23 Q1/Q2 games before B1G Tourney ---- We'd be 2-8 now in Q1 with 5 games left / 5-3 in Q2 with 0 games left Bottom line: We need a handful of opponents' games to go our way, plus we need some more wins ourselves. So it's a typical NCAA bubble season in mid-February for us ... minus watching Delaware State scores. Go MVSU!

  15. I don't know but perhaps we should just let the rest of the season play out. You're drawing grand, definitive conclusions on this season when it's still not over. The fact of the matter is that you can guess that we will go 0-5 or 1-4 down the stretch and you may be right but we could easily go 3-2, win a game in the Big Tournament, get in the NCAA tourney and who knows, maybe win a game there and then how do your arguments look today? The absolute definitive nature of your statements feels a little trollish to me.

  16. There's a couple of things at play here: 1) The sentiment I hear from the majority of people on this board is "Hey, maybe it's time for a change? But we still have `20% of a season left and we're 15-11; how about we chill out and see how this plays out?" 2) Why don't you write the AD then if you're the expert in hiring coaches? Because I guarantee our past ADs didn't get their first pick, or second, or third, etc. when trying to lure a coach to come to Lincoln. Not to speak for @Norm Peterson, but I think this is where some of his caution comes into play. Who's to say Moos is starting to look at Page 2 of his list?

  18. I think it boils down pretty simply: 18 wins - Bubbly and very close, likely NIT bound in my opinion. 19 wins - Bubbly, likely NCAA bound 20 wins - NCAA and hopefully/potentially the retirement of two threads - "Our Next Coach" and "Enjoying the Last Month of the Miles Era"! The easiest path to 18 wins is obviously tomorrow at PSU and the two remaining home games. I just don't know if collectively those three wins have enough "Wow" factor to make us a slam dunk case. My gut tells me our Quad 1 wins, which would likely be 5 at that point just don't jump off the page as some other teams Quad 1 wins might. I think that 19th win, whether a road win at MSU or Michigan or in the Big Tourney is really critical.

  19. I understand and respect that, but let's not lose sight of the bigger Topic at hand here. I will simply refer to him as Dr. Tom going forward, I'm not a dyed-in-the-wool Husker fan but I certainly know of his legacy at that University. If not for Coach Miles I would follow the Huskers as I do today. My offense was to HB simply ignoring the issue and focusing on grammar. To me that shows a level of short-sightedness that is reserved for internet chat boards rather than being solution-oriented. In the corrupt world of college basketball I would hope that running a Clean Program and establishing a strong recruiting base and helping to fill the Vault on a nightly basis would matter. I also know that in the business of college basketball winning matters. But let's not forget who the Huskers are as a basketball culture. 7 NCAA tournaments in the history of the program and zero wins in the tournament. Is it possible there are unrealistic expectations. If you make it to the dance this year your current coach will gotten you to the NCAA tournament 25% of the time, while running a very clean program.

  23. Good win. Glad to see Maddie play better. Cain continues to shake off the early season slump. Start of the 4th was the classic case of everyone trying to get theres with a big lead. I would have called a time out sooner to admonish them to knock off the selfish stuff. But we played thru it finally, and sealed a nice victory.

  25. A-freakin-men. Can you people acknowledge it might take a game or two to figure out how to win without Copeland? How we managed to win two games without him is an amazing thing to me. And some of you act like, if we had a good coach, we'd be undefeated or something. Unbelievable.

If we're on the edge a game against Ohio St is a great opportunity against a NCAA team that isn't firing on all cylinders; A game against Illinois in Chicago is a knife fight where winning does nothing and then you get to play one of the Michigans. May the odds be in our favor.

A lot goes into recruiting. We have many things to offer here as noted in the past such as fans, facilities etc. but it comes down to the comfort level with the staff and their vision of the future for the program and the potential recruits. Keep your fingers crossed as she is the type of player we need to help take the program to another level.

  31. Luinardi still hates Nebrasketball. Has Indiana and Oklahoma in, but Nebraska is not in his first four out or next four out. Not to mention ASU, number 71 in the NET. Nebraska is 38. And, Temple is the last team in, with 1 Q1 win and 56 in the NET. I am not saying Nebraska should be in, but the teams he has of ahead of them don't belong either.

  32. It's horrid this year....3-2 down the stretch will have us firmly on the bubble. Butler on the bubble and they are 6-7 in a really iffy Big East. Ward injured for MSU makes that game a bit easier. I really hope this team can find a way to win it's next 2. Miles deserves it, our players deserve, our fans deserve (hope I don't sound entitled). I so badly want this next month to be interesting.

  34. It's very different. It's pretty obvious what is going to happen if we don't make the NCAA tourney. For Bo it was 'this is a guy who wins but is he winning enough to account for the fact he's a tremendous source of divisiveness at this university'. So why can't we make the tournament this year?

  38. She actually doesn't get that many minutes. She played 16 minutes yesterday, which is about her average. I noticed that in a few of the games she has started, she ends up with only 12 minutes. So why does she start? I'm sure coach has her reasons, but as the posters above suggest, I'm pretty sure defense and consistency have a lot to do with it.

  39. To answer your whole rant, defense. Mershon plays great defense, Brown not so well.

  40. Tim Miles has a 41.5% conference winning percentage. Greg McDermott (since his son left) is 43.5% in an arguably softer league. The narrative is that one is a sell and one is a buy. Maybe if we follow up our 2nd most wins in school history with a second winning season and strong recruiting class than the narratives are backwards.
    2 points
  41. No. This wasn't about whether we should do a no-sit for Purdue vs. Iowa. This was about a lot of things, but mostly about the people coming out of the woodwork, with the benefit of hindsight, saying we should have canned Miles 2 years ago. I wanted an analogy that would capture the kind of futility we've experienced as fans of a program that has never won an NCAA tourney game. Because that's a reality that multiple coaching changes hasn't fixed. And if it hasn't readily worked in the past, I'm not sure what would make anyone think it would readily work the next time we try it. For Pete's sake, people, we have been to only six NCAA tourneys in the last 30 years and only two of the last 25. And so you're the Nebraska AD standing on the fairway of #15 trying to decide whether to lay up and fire the coach or let this thing play out. Sure, there was a disappointing end to the '16-'17 season. But it was a young squad with plenty of young talent. On top of that, we had 2 transfers sitting out who were both consensus top 100 high school recruits, including the program's FIRST EVER Rivals 5-star. And, though you haven't seen the transfers play yet, you have to realize the talent level is better than it's been in years. Decades, even. Are you going to blow up that roster and take your chances with a coaching change? I don't think there's any way in hell you would do that. What's it gain you to change coaches in 2017? If you do a coaching change, you start over at square one and with a lot of unknowns including probably a completely revamped roster. If you keep the coach, the absolute worst-case scenario is that you just make the coaching change a year later. And for a program that's been around longer than any current fan has been alive, what's one more year? The best-case scenario if you keep the coach is that we make the dance and win a game, with those Rivals 4- and 5-star player, which is frankly better than the best-case scenario if you change coaches. The talent was there. There might be some rosters you'd be willing to blow up to make a coaching change, but not that one. Not if you're Nebraska. Miles had already shown you he could get you there. And so I think you had to let it play out. See if all these Rivals 4- and 5-stars could get you into the top half of the conference and back into the Big Dance. And last year, they almost did it. And this year, virtually every single one of us was confident they actually would. And most of the national media agreed. We were ranked for several weeks for goodness' sake. Or at least receiving votes. In all probability, we wouldn't have been any of those things if we'd made a coaching change two years ago. You had to let it play out, you had to try to reach the #15 green in two. And even if it didn't work out, it was still the right decision. Because you were doing what gave you the best chance at that moment. Even knowing what happened with Copeland's knee, I would not have traded the opportunity to see this season play out with this coach and these players in exchange for whatever the hell would have been behind door #3 two years ago. Until Copeland's untimely injury, these players and this coach represented the best chance to get us into position to win that elusive NCAA tourney game that we've had since 1994. Think about that, and then tell me again how we should have fired Miles 2 years ago.

  45. Not that anyone here has any reason to believe me but when it comes to Hoiberg, from a couple of good Ames sources it sounds like they expect him to end up with the Timberwolves. He enjoyed his previous time there and his family likes the area. As far as college goes it seems like two schools constantly pop up that he is interested MSU and KU (this might cause a riot in Ames and a burning of his jersey). I haven't heard anything about interest in NU.
