Enjoy The Last Month Of The Miles Era
Ron Mexico and 8 others reacted to hhcdave for a topic
As I sit back and reflect on the past 6.5 years, I find myself nostalgic and at a tough time accepting that this program is where it’s at and that the Miles era will likely end with less talent on the next roster than where it started (assuming our stud JUCO doesn’t come and we lose at minimum of one of Roby and Allen). That is literally impossible for me to wrap my mind around. I never saw this ending as possible - never in a million years. Not last month, not last season, not 6.5 years ago. I remember watching the live press conference of Coach Miles being introduced like it was yesterday. I was fired up - I loved this guy!!! My love grew to man crush levels in year two - culminating in No Sit Sunday. I was anongst the first to read and love the book about that season. At that point, the only worry I had was which job would Miles leave us for? How long could we hold on to the next big thing? There were times where I legitimately wondered if Miles were the next household name. But like most of us, much of that was wrapped into his enthusiasm, happy go lucky personality and quirkiness. Coach Miles is a decent man with million dollar charisma. However, the signs of failure were always there. We just loved him like one of our own - he was one of us - a Midwesterner with a dream. So we chose not to see them. Transfers at a scary level. Yes, it happens everywhere, but it can’t happen when most of the guys you rely on are transfers. You tie up scholarships in guys who will play two years after burning a scholarship for a year as a redshirt. You absolutely must have four year program guys around them. This never happened for a variety of reasons, but the main one was that the majority of these transfers were put above the others in the program with a different set of rules. There was internal fighting on a good majority of these teams. Nobody wants to stick around for guys who score and pad their stats based on volume. This is a losing basketball mentality that doesn’t create teamwork, let alone an offense. The biggest failure in the Miles era ended up being taking on transfers and alllowing them to run the show and chase their NBA dreams. Drove off countless talented kids who wanted to be here. Only a select few saw it through. (Webster Shields Watson). In retrospect, the hot February and March of year two was fleeting. It was two transfers hawking up shots - many of which were forced and very bad (Pettaway took AWFUL shots). However, for six weeks they went in. Petteway in a way hurt this program imo by showing Miles the transfer thing worked. James Palmer became the new de facto Pettaway because that’s what worked before and Miles can’t truly coach offense at this level. The truth is Pettaway was two times the player Palmer ever was. Relying on and expecting Palmer to carry this team was always fools gold. Palmer will go down as the most overhyped player in this program since a guy who was way more talented than him - Jaron Boone. 19 PPG means zero when you take horrible shots, shoot 35% from the fiend, can never finish an and one and completely ruin the offense in the process. A good coach takes this team to the tournament because he knows Palmer is scoring option three or four. What’s that? Palmer can get to the rim? So could Lance Jeter. Also a much better college player. I bring up Palmer and Pettaway in this post because they are the symptom of the problem - Coach Miles. The transger thing - not retaining assistants - allowing a kid to declare for the NBA draft when he didn’t stand a chance at getting drafted - having no offense - refusing to play zone for five years - not using timeouts - not ever recruiting shooters or big men - and not keeping players because of “gunners” are why we are where we are. It shouldn’t be surprising if we look back and watch what went down. At the end of the day, we all loved Coach Miles. We are all shocked. And you know what? Even for all of his shortcomings as a coach, I still love the guy as a human being and always will. He will hold a special place in my heart. With that said, let’s enjoy the last five weeks of the Tim Miles era. Let’s treasure these last final moments of the dream we were living, knowing damn well that the alarm clock will soon bring us back to the light of the morning and reality. Thank you for your efforts, Coach. Man to man, there were some fun times. And we will always appreciate your efforts. Me typing this all out and at times being harsh isn’t meant to degrade you. It’s to try to understand how the heck we got to this heartbreaking end. Coping, in a way. I will be traveling back for the Iowa game to cheer on coach one more time, knowing an era of my own life will be ending soon, too, but being thankful that it happened.9 points -

Probably the biggest failing not listed above is bungling the recruiting of the state of Nebraska. We aren't exactly swimming in talent here but that missing tenacity and buy-in to this program certainly was there. Recruiting Deverell Biggs ended up being the start of a series of overcorrections that we didn't recover from until just recently. That being said Miles made this program relevant locally and nationally again. While the new facilities certainly helped, the guy still hasn't stop selling this program.9 points -

Keep this in mind: we had zero winning conference seasons between 1999 (Nee) and 2014 (Miles). Miles repeated the feat in 2018, so he will finish his career with two winning conference seasons in seven years. Nee had four winning conference seasons in 14. Collier had zero. Sadler had zero. Let's do as you say and wish them all the best. What the team accomplished last year was under-appreciated at the time, so we shouldn't diminish it now that most of those players and the coaches will no longer be with us. Go Big Red!8 points -
It is all so sad. This was going to be our year. It was not meant to be. I grew up watching Nee's teams. I never thought that Collier really fit in (That time he skipped the postgame after a big loss at Creighton was it for me). Doc I like but he could never get it going. I thought Tim would be the one. We had flashes. It all built up to this year. It looked so promising. But then it imploded. It is time to move on. No Sit Sunday reminds me of a quote from Dr. Hunter S. Thompson: "Our energy would simply PREVAIL. There was no point in fighting — on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave... So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in ... (PBA) ..and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high water mark — that place where the wave finally broke, and rolled back.” No Sit Sunday was the high water mark. It should have been the beginning of greatness instead it was all we got. I will be there to cheer at all the remaining games and wish them all the best, players and coaches. Go Big Red! Let's hope the next coach and players will show us what we can be.8 points

We were a tourney team last year. By the end of the year, the league was far better than the perception was and the ridiculous reliance on the RPI to develop the quadrants was devastating.7 points

But even then a red flag emerges. We had a chance to prove the world wrong about us, and instead the blow took the life out of the team and they largely phoned in the effort in Starkville. PSU, in contrast, was determined to let the world know they were better than they were treated. So this whole "can't take a punch" thing goes back to last season with the same personnel.4 points -

Honestly think it's more likely that we win 4 more in the regular season, 2-3 in the BTT and go dancing. Either way, my goal was a to make the dance. An overall body of work would show that Miles has been able to do that twice in 7 years. The question would then become... is that enough for you?3 points -

One last thing(s) on Purdue, Cain had a good game. (last few games too) Almost seems like she's stepped up her game...seems more confident. Quit worrying so much? Had 4 fouls late in the game, but still was aggressive and hungry. We had a big scorer step up...been missing that most of the year. ...... and going out on a limb...may be a big part of our problem losing games late...not able to close out a game....not always able to deliver that dagger that takes over the game for us. Nicea has become a force. All B!G defensive team? Leigh is on her way to greatness.3 points -

Coaches that you think should be on Nebraska's list, if this trend continues
dustystehl and 2 others reacted to hhcdave for a topic
The Turgeon name came from someone I consider very credible who thinks Moose has him at the top of his list. As detailed above, Turgeon isn't disliked at Maryland but he isn't beloved, either. He's been there long enough where it might be time to think about moving on, depending how this season ends. His family is in Nebraska (Lincoln) - playing ball at KU - familiarity with NU and how he went WAY out of his way last week at the presser to praise Miles and Nebraska has me thinking there's a little smoke to it. Also, according to the person who told me this, Nebraska could easily pay more than Maryland could and the UNL athletic department is in much better shape than Maryland currently is. Again, I don't think this happens. But I think there ARE some wings to it.3 points -
My in-laws worked in the Maryland AD for years and are still very connected. The general view is that people like Turgeon but feel Maryland is deserving of a “better” coach. It reminds me of the relationship Mark Richt had with Georgia. If Nebraska were to offer, Maryland would not exactly fight to keep him. However, I have no clue as to Turgeon’s interest. On another note, a close friend of mine has a very close connection with Duke and shared the following. Evidently, once a year the Duke alumni newsletter examines the current basketball coaching staff during the season and identifies specific schools where each assistant coach could become a HC. The January 2019 newsletter listed Nebraska as one of five schools were Jon Scheyer could land as HC. At the time of publication, Miles had the team playing well; and the newsletter noted Scheyer to Nebraska would only occur if Miles was fired while, alternatively, the other schools were already on the brink of a coaching transition. The newsletter does not indicate whether Coach K had any input but these projections are not based on idle speculation.3 points

If he wants to be near his dad I could see it. Someone like him has seen first hand what’s possible at Nebraska, and the fan support in a way someone who has never coached against Nebraska has not. It may not be as crazy as it sounds. He’s a midwestern guy and may want to get back to the midwest3 points -

Coach Miles was hired the beginning of Spring my Freshman year at UNL. About everyday for 3 week I picked up his plate at the continental breakfast in the Embassy Suites downtown where I worked, often with a, "good morning coach" if he wasn't on the phone. Now I'm all nostalgic. I do wish Coach Miles had a longer leash than he was give, but this is big 5 college basketball and unless you get results and meet expectations, you get fired. Looking back, one sour point for me: I think the team Andrew White transferred off of could have competed and possibly made the NIT.2 points -
WBB officiating continues to be a mystery. Very physical play was allowed on ball screens, fighting through screens etc., in the first half, then things tighten up in the 3rd quarter. Much was let go today which worked to Purdue’s advantage but thankfully, we managed to make some free throws down the stretch.2 points

Good defensive effort most of the game. I was wondering if I was watching the men’s offense most of the game, not very efficient and too many loose turnovers. Brown’s hot shooting carried the day and Nicea was the reason we stayed in the game early. It’s an important morale victory, we have lost too many tight games and too many at home. Nice to see Kate make some key baskets. That young lady needs a confidence boost. Wins at this stage are gold.2 points -

Very well written. I have the same feeling. I was and to some degree still am a big Miles guy. He seems to say all the right things that make you believe things will get better and yet they just never did. He is handling this situation with class and still working hard to make the tournament. Obviously, we need to get hot to finish the year starting now but the rankings still like us. No matter what happens, I wish nothing but success for Coach Miles in where ever he ends up.2 points

Dave, I know it was a rough night, but neither Petteway nor Palmer were JUCO transfers. Both were legit transfers from heavy benches at better programs. Pretty vanilla types of cases and common these days. The rest kind of reads like fan fiction. Obviously this ride is over. Almost every school in the country repeats this ritual the same as us after every failed "5 year plan". I hope Miles changes direction and takes an assistant gig with a top coach and improves his ceiling. He finally needs to spend time as the student rather than the master. Still has a long career in front of him if he wants it. It's just not going to be here. Everyone needs to just hang in there for another month and this will be over. Besides, with conference tourneys, there's always hope even for the pathologically optimistic.2 points -

What? I was at the event. Moos was exactly where he should have been, in a room full of the biggest donors. It's absurd to suggest that he should have been at the basketball game instead. Edit: let's be clear, basketball is second fiddle to football. And I'm sure they made a bunch of money for the athletic department. Did it suck that the event was at the same time as a basketball game? Yes it did, but the big 10 scheduled the game.2 points -

Building a roster that can do well in the NCAA tournament is different than building a roster that can do well in the NCAA tournament AND that can survive the grind of a major conference with legitimate frontcourts. (Witness this years Nebraska team, if this team was in the Atlantic 10 or Mountain West or even the Big East or Pac12 it would go about 25-5 in the regular season and make the sweet sixteen, but it couldn't survive 20 games against Big Ten competition - the frontcourt matchups just didn't work.) Shaka proved he could win in the tournament once he got there, but he hasn't proven he can get there when he's in a major conference.2 points -

But here is the deal. When we had Cope in the line up along with our other starters, we could spread the floor and the opposition had to respect all five as decent outside shooters. That allowed us to dribble drive to the basket. Now, we struggled with that since the beginning of January as our shooters were either missing open looks or were reluctant to take the shot. But with Tanner or Thor or any of our other subs in the game, defenses do not need to come out and cover on the perimeter, because we struggle drawing iron on our shots. So they sit back and clog the middle. It just creates such a cluster. I guess that is my humble observation, and I have not seen any changes in our offensive philosophy. Perhaps there have been changes, and I have simply not noticed those changes. So we fall into this wicked dimension where our shooting woes continue to manifest, and we are clanging shots at every level. IDK...the frustration mounts for the players, coaches and fans.1 point -
