    weird stats

We are so close to being really good, and with a little good fortune could have a lot better records. I truly think it will flip next year to the upside. Our overall stats on the season are reasonably solid in almost all categories. Just looking at them a few things jumped out at me that are unusual and things that need to be addressed for us to get better in my opinion. 1. Kate has only shot 15 free throws on the season. Given her huge number of minutes and role that is a crazy low number. We have got to get her some shots going towards the basket so she can get to the line some, and we can get the other teams bigs in foul trouble a little more. Taylor needs to find a way to get to the line more also so people can't camp on her 3 ball. 2. Ashton has 11 assists in almost 400 minutes. That is almost impossible to pull off and tells me she has got to slow down and kick the ball out on some offensive rebounds rather than always trying to muscle up a shot. Her assist to TO ratio is 1-4 to the negative. I love her energy, athleticism and toughness. When she addresses this issue it will help her and us a lot. 3. Mershon has 60 fg attempts and 20 of them are 3s despite only shooting 25 % from 3 pt line. I love her length, iq and defense, but she has got to be more willing to mix it up inside as we can't have our 4/5 player with 1/3 of their shots being 3s. That means she is settling. 4. I have harped on it in other posts but our bigs as a group have taken almost 100 3 point attempts and are a combined 23%. Again that is settling and wasted possessions. Not one of them is hitting over 25% on high volume so unless the shot clock is going off its rarely a good shot for them. I believe in this team. Great kids and talented players. Our margin for error isn't very big so these little things matter.

  2. Classless fans can stay the efff home. I’m as frustrated, sad, and even angry as the next. I cut out of work early, busted my tail to go pick up my son, skipped dinner, sped down I-80 to Lincoln, parked up by the baseball field, and walked for ten minutes in the freezing cold to see ineptness and sloppy play. But I’m going to do it again. I did it under BC and DS, and I’ll do it again. But anyone who takes pleasure in seeing someone fail, lose their job, affecting families and kids, and then spouts off as a keyboard/twitter warrior calling Miles a POS and a loser, needs to look themselves in the mirror and ask “why am I a verified d-bag??”

Funny you say this. I was just sitting on the couch after the game and my wife comes into the room and says "The Huskers lost again huh?" I said "yeah, why?" She goes "Because you're just sitting there with a blank look on your face looking at the bookshelf."

Comparing Yori to Williams is impractical. Yori had more coaching experience than Williams. Last year was Coach Williams first time to the tourney. Higher expectations, bigger conference much more scrutiny than she has ever had. I think she is the right coach and she has a good staff, but just as a Freshman there is going to be a learning curve envolved. What is our defensive identity, how do we manage expectations, how do we manage a power 5 that now knows how to scout us? Remember a couple things, last year we over achieved ( we weren't as good as we played). Last year we set up for more success because of an easier schedule ( we went from 100 SOS to 25 SOS), by the way this is a lot of wood to chop especially when you're trying to catch 4 freshmen up to speed and play a major role. Too much success too quickly can also be a bad thing, cause it can cause unreasonable expectations and put too much pressure on a team that's not really ready for and in truth I'm not sure the coaching staff was ready to handle it and the pressure of not living up to those expectations. We are on the right track.. Why do I say that.... We are and have been able to compete in all but 2 games, which is by the way why this is so frustrating. I really think it will turn around next year big time. The players will be better and just as if not more important the coaching staff will have grown quite a bit from this season.

From CBS Chicago in 2013: Pierre Pierce performed unwanted sex acts on a female student at his apartment, covering her mouth when she tried to scream. He eventually plea-bargained to a charge of assault causing injury, later issuing a public apology for “inappropriate sexual contact with a fellow student.” Had Alford succeeded in his efforts to strong-arm the victim, it all would have evaporated. The disgusting ploy backfired, however, and only steeled her resolve to pursue criminal charges. Alford enlisted the help of close friend Jim Goodrich, the campus representative for Christian group Athletes in Action who often traveled with the team and conducted bible-study sessions. Per specific instruction from Alford, the victim was invited to what she was told was a “prayer meeting,” at which she was urged to back off and not cause problems for a basketball program that could overpower her. This could describe James Naismith and I would beg for someone else. If we have even a shred of decency we will stay far, far, far away from Steve Alford.

  11. I agree with the OP almost completely. Leaving early is baffling. Yes some people have babysitters or something important happening, but only some people. So I can understand some people leaving but not that usual ‘mass exodus’. I guess I am a basketball-only husker fan so I look forward to every game, want to watch very minute, and when I can, drive down from Omaha in crappy weather to watch even a struggling team play. The mass exodus doesn’t bother me as much as Wednesday though. Arrived one minute late to a half-empty, dead-silent arena. Only a half-full student section. Could hear Turgeon from the 300 level. People booing college kids that are playing a game for our entertainment who are in a funk. Honestly, I bet our guys are passing up shots because they don’t want to hear the groans for a miss or a sarcastic cheer for a make. Disheartening. Yes there are die-hard basketball fans (anyone on this board obviously) but I think I have to face the music and realize many fans that come to the games are football fans and FAIRWEATHER basketball fans. I think we just should take the classic JFK approach to watching sports to heart. ‘Ask not what your team can do for you, ask what you can do for your team.’ In other words, we need to be that sixth man and pump up the players so they aren’t afraid of upsetting the fickle fans in the arena who won’t show up/leave early.

From a couple pages back...I think this is a bigger deal than the airtime it's receiving. You had a resource being given freely to the AD (if you follow Twitter you see that his services were on a volunteer basis, so it didn't even cost the department a penny) that clearly was effective -- the volleyball team certainly benefitted from his services, and the basketball team looked entirely different in November (before he was axed) than it does now. But the administration, who allegedly is committed to providing all the resources the team needs for success, intentionally eliminated this one. Why? (If you want to say that this should be the coach's job, I hope you'd tell John Cook the same thing and to give back that national championship.) Support doesn't have to mean a nice facility to practice. It doesn't have to mean a big buyout. Sometimes it can just mean showing a modicum of interest in the program, and not cutting out the resource the coach himself identified as being a need for his team.

At this particular point moment trying to draw meaning from whether or not Moos is at a game is like trying to draw meaning from reading the players' social media postings: an exercise in seeing what you want to see. If we end up replacing Miles and he's showing up next year in one of those Herbie basketball hats? Then you'll know.

To me this is a overboard. Football drives this Athletic Department like it or not and national signing day was Feb 6th which I'm sure was set in stone well before this game was scheduled. I'm a basketball guy and sure as heck know that the AD should be showing up at the airplane hangar, not a rando sporting event on such a day.

Totally get that it isn't basketball-specific, but it does seem like a weird policy, especially since it seems to be sort of randomly applied (Volleyball was allowed to work with him for the majority of their season, and does anyone really think that if Scott Frost wanted to have someone come in to talk to the football team, it wouldn't be permitted?). Maybe it doesn't make a difference at all, I don't know. But if it isn't costing anything, and the coach feels like it's worthwhile, and literally the same person has seen good results with other teams within the same department, I guess it seems like an odd policy to enact. If it flips even a single game outcome (and gives us a two or three or four game losing streak instead of the continuous slide as we bottom out), isn't that worth it? Again, not saying THIS is the reason we're losing. But the question was about support shown for the coaches by the administration, and this is one example of a place where there was a very easy opportunity to provide something the coach felt was useful (without adding a penny to the budget or a minute of time spent) and instead a random policy was enacted, thus denying said support.

Since I'm coming in late, it's hard to add anything to what's been said. As alluded to, offense seemed stagnant- obviously makes the D's job easier. They trapped in our half-court off. several times. Then there's the side to side passing in the backcourt. That ball needs to move forward one way or another. Coaches have to go back and find something that will facilitate that. Barring an unlikely winning streak, I think us fans need to chalk up this season as one of learning and growing for the ladies. Hopefully we can get one more recruit in the late signing period and fill a needed gap. Another "big" would be nice, or even better possibly someone long and athletic that has shown she scraps on defense (like Eliely).

Ew. It's one thing to cover for your player who steals a bike or cheats on a test. But covering for your player who habitually rapes people (and using a ministry to do it) is a whole other level. I'm not asking for a saint but this should be a pretty low bar to clear. UCLA caught plenty of flak for hiring him after that (and there were plenty of protests at Iowa too), as they should. I'm not a fan of how Osborne handled stuff in the 90s either (arguably it cost him the governor's mansion too), but I would hope we could learn from that and do better now. "Hire someone who doesn't try to actively cover up serial rape" shouldn't be a groundbreaking statement. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

  26. Thoughts after my delayed viewing of last night's debacle: 1. The mass exodus of fans reminded me of the Oklahoma State football game in Callahan's last year. 2. Even the Big10 announcers were appalled by the exodus.3. Believe me, I understand the frustration, but I have seen many college games in many venues and I have always believed the Nebraska fans were no different than most other fans-gracious when things are going good, not so much when we are losing. 4. No need to humiliate the team any more than already had been done-it wasn't getting any colder during the few minutes it takes to walk to the door. 5. We may be the best fans in America at stalking out early, though. 6. Hope I don't get too many down votes, but I have always thought calling ourselves the "best fans" was a somewhat arrogant claim.

TBH I didn't know anything about Jack Riggins other than he was very self-promoting on twitter so I didn't necessarily think that highly of him though obviously his services were in demand from volleyball and basketball so that meant something. Just listening to him talking on 1620 it's pretty obvious he could be helping this team right now and it's a shame that isn't allowed to happen.

As another example of the administration not fully supporting basketball, here's a post from Twitter showing Moos having a great time at a football recruiting event at the same time the basketball team was playing a real game in Lincoln. Tell me this doesn't send a clear message that basketball is second fiddle and not a priority when he's skipping a game to attend this event. I don't care if the coach is on the hot seat or not, he should be at every game possible. He made all the football games with Riley on the hot seat!

  30. I go to every game. Have only missed a few since 1978, although I can't hold a candle to HuskerPapa. Anyway, I think the above post overstates what went down at Wednesday's game. For an extremely cold, early tip-off weekday game in the midst of a huge losing steak, it was still a decent crowd. I heard very little booing that wasn't directed at the officials (yeah, I'm old and might be deaf), catcalls, and when I left AFTER the game there was still a huge crowd at the escalators. I'm sure some think my observations are wrong, but I was there and that's what I saw. As a fan base we're not perfect, but I think there are those who are hyper-critical.

  31. Two things make the fan base exceptional: (1) no pro sports, so total focus, even obsession, on college sports (2) willingness to buy tickets, even for a losing team. So maybe we're the best in purchasing tickets. Regarding behavior, spirit, loyalty etc., there's no way to prove who's the best and to say you are is unbelievably obnoxious. It almost disqualifies you from being the best. I've always wanted to rip down the freakin' sign. The sign is OK, however, it you read it as the being the administration saying to us, "You guys are the best! You still buy tickets even though we frequently disappoint you!"

It is all too easy to get Down on the team, but I like our players (and wouldn't trade 'em for anyone). There is Plenty of Athleticism, I think our Freshmen Class is full of 'em; as good as anybody. Defense is Good, demonstrated by holding opponents to below their normal scoring, but can, and should, be improved! Scores can be deceptive; but the Ladies have been in practically every game to the end, within striking distance of winning, only to have to foul to try to pull out the win, inflating the opponents score. Not bad at all, especially considering there are only Ten Healthy players on the entire roster (Grad Transfer Kristian Hudson, fm FIU required surgery ending her season). Credit Coach Williams and her staff for recruiting and filling holes; it is not their fault if needed talent is not available (or injured and can't play). IIRC, by some accounts Coach Amy has recruited two top-20 classes back-to-back, (the current four freshmen are all capable of being starters, or playing starters minutes) and the three signed recruits for 2019 are all highly-regarded. Again, it is all too easy to fault coaching, But this is essentially a young team, and they do make mistakes; sometimes not playing as 'Smart'. as they should. We were voted 9th in the B1G by B1G coaches. 11. Wake Forest (45) – Remember when Wake was really good? The Demon Deacons went to the Sweet 16 three times within a four-year span in the mid 1990s under Dave Odom, and Skip Prosser took the program to the NCAA tourney in four of his six seasons. Since Dino Gaudio was fired in 2010, they have gone just once – a First Four appearance two seasons ago. Where they win: They can sell NBA stars Tim Duncan and Chris Paul, and also the fact they reside in a college basketball hotbed. Wake boasts a great recruiting base. The knock: “It’s a small school in what’s kind of a boring town, and there are three other schools in the state that overshadow Wake. It just doesn’t have a big brand.” – ACC assistant

And , let's face it" , the new breed of all Boston fans are getting there with the exception of really old baseball fans like myself who have years of listening to Yankee fans to purge. I don't know if it makes a difference but couldn't a savvy AD have added on 2 or 3 years but only increased the buyout amount by 1 year's worth of salary? Probably doesn't change things a bit but it shows me actual effort. We had a team where we knew that there wasn't an "alpha dog" at the beginning of the season and we were working with a guy who specializes in "rebuilding leadership styles" and he got axed by the admin (this also happened to the volleyball team). Maybe it doesn't make a lick of difference but it shows at least some effort to help the coach who identified the potential problem this year during the summer. The point to harping on the lack of *whatever* from the administration is that it does matter, especially during the bad times, and what makes anyone think that this will all be fixed by hiring a new basketball coach?
