That may have been the case earlier in the season, but if Miles doesn't find a way to get his most talented roster into the tournament, finishes with only 1 NCAA appearance in 7 seasons, and has zero NCAA and zero NIT wins, then you'll start to see some of those "support him until he's let go" fans say "I really liked the guy, but I guess he just couldn't quite get it done for us" and move on to going all in and supporting the next coach.7 points -

Color me impressed if you guys have people in the academic know. I suppose the plan has been to graduate early to have the degree and go pro but this all sort of seems like what happens when you have a month of losing and that time is spent thinking about what else could go wrong. The working theory of Isaiah knowing how good he could be academically seems really far fetched to me but then again I've had a very bad year in the HHCC contest.4 points -

I will go down with the ship because I bleed red and am a fan. I won't have revisionist history here. I expected a special year and have been very disappointed in the last several weeks. If the season doesn't turn around, then I will reluctantly be on board for a coaching change despite how much I like Miles and how I feel he has elevated this program. Make no mistake, Nebraska is better off now then we were when Miles took over. However, for all of you that are adament we fire Miles, just be careful what you wish for. There is no guarantee of a home run hire...we could have another 10 years of Collier/Sadler and our talent base could drop off considerably. Which, by the way, Sadler was a great guy and like @hskr4life said, that termination press conference was brutal to watch. Really hope we beat Maryland, get on a little roll and not have to watch Miles go through something similar.4 points -

I did the research: Since Tim's been here, he's won 60 games against Power 6 Conference teams (Pac 12, Big 12, Big Ten, ACC, SEC, Big East). At the time of the game, the number of teams that were at or above 0.500 in their conference is 17 (This excludes 11 non-conference games as those teams did not have a conference game recorded yet. It also excludes the 2 Big Ten opener W's when the opponent was 0-0). At the end of the season, the number of teams that were at or above 0.500 in their conference is 15 (This excludes the 7 wins from this season as the season isn't over yet). To reference your particular stat: In the last 2 seasons (55 games), he's won 21 games against Power 6 Conference teams (Pac 12, Big 12, Big Ten, ACC, SEC, Big East). At the time of the game, the number of teams that were at or above 0.500 in their conference is 7 (This excludes 5 non-conference games as those teams did not have a conference game recorded yet. It also excludes 1 Big Ten opener W when the opponent was 0-0). At the end of the season, the number of teams that were at or above 0.500 in their conference is 3 (This excludes the 7 wins from this season as the season isn't over yet).3 points -
A. Not by me. Of all the issues I have with Miles, transfers are not near the top of my list. B. Also think there is a big difference to go that route in year 1 or year 2 when trying to rebuild and still going that route in years 6,7, or 8.3 points

It seems to me that Coach Miles' biggest coaching mistake this year was in not telling his players not to attempt a dunk after hearing the referee blow his whistle. Before the year started I predicted it would be the best year ever if none of our big three seniors got an injury. Copeland did, and it is now like trying to use a three legged milking stool with one leg gone. Some milk spillage is inevitable. Unless this team loses the remainder of its games and completely tanks, I see enough pieces in place for next year that I would offer another one year contract. However, I am beginning to see enough impatience in the fan base, donors, and administration that I fear they will begin cutting the wood to assemble a new milking stool. If so, let's hope we get milkshakes and not curds and whey. (And I want some up votes from outstate for the agriculture analogy).2 points

I don't see any of this. First of all, I don't see the analogy to the end of the Pelini era, which was at least as much about attitude, image and behavior as it was about winning. I suppose the only connection could be the lack of support from the ADs. I see it closer to the how the Riley era ended--a whole bunch of losses on the court/field and not many problems outside of that. Not sure where you're getting some big fracture or side-taking. If we keep losing, there won't be a "significant portion" of the fan base very vocal in opposition to moving on from Miles. Certainly around the athletic community in Lincoln right now there is frustration and disappointment, but not much dissent. Certainly a feeling of inevitability rather than protest. Now, your scenario could play out if we rally somewhat but not enough to save Miles. Say we win 5 or 6 and that isn't enough. Then there will be more division out there, but it's as likely we win 0-2 and this thing goes down without a whole lot of dissension. I think it is likely that moving on from Miles won't be a major source of "fracture". The issue will be in the new hire. That one ain't gonna be easy.2 points

Why knock Collier/Sadler though? I think Miles has brought in better individual talent than those guys. But his results are going to end up pretty darn similar when it is all said and done. And yes...Miles has played a tougher non-con and in the Big Ten. He also had two new facilities in his back pocket as well.2 points -

While Moos has done great things for Nebraska football, thus far, here’s a “no confidence” vote on his basketball capabilities. Here are two reasons why: 1. Washington St.’s record over the past seven seasons (his hire is still there) is terrible—truly terrible!!! Here is that under-.500 record: 2018-19: 8-14 so far 2017-18: 12-19 2016-17: 14-18 2015-16: 9-22 2014-15: 13-18 2013-14: 10-21 2012-13: 13-19 2. Moos has exhibited, from the beginning, a passive/aggressive approach toward Tim Miles. If he wanted Miles gone—just fire him already. Instead, he kept Miles on the payroll but undermined him every now and then. And here we are, wallowing in disappointment. Incomprehensible!!! Think of it this way: Kenya Hunter left because he saw the handwriting on the wall . . . and because that happened, we have Amir Harris, instead of Xavier Johnson. Here’s hoping Moos has a viable plan for the future of Nebrasketball. And here’s a “no confidence” vote regarding that hope!2 points -

I have been reading the posts in this thread with a lot of interest and wasn't quite sure I could add anything to the discussion but... One of the greatest challenges of the human experience is that we have the ability to assign meaning to things. In other words, we can see an event and interpret a meaning either through the event itself or the expectation of what may happen in the future. I suppose forums like HHC wouldn't exist otherwise. I mean, you can only discuss the actual game for so long, right? I'm not sure what will happen in the future. I can say this team is currently not well-coached and to be honest, I think most of us vastly overrated the quality of the players. I include myself in that as much as anyone. I hear a lot of talk about "talent" but I'm not so sure a talent discussion for NU basketball isn't a relative thing. Yes, we probably have better basketball players in our starting rotation than we've had in a very long time...but in the context of competition, is the team really that talented?2 points -

I will always be a Nebraska basketball fan. At 67, I a running out of time to see NU notch one victory in an NCAA Tournament. Don’t think that is asking too much. I was cautiously optimistic about this season but was never convinced we were a sure thing to make the Dance. Our lack of quality depth was my major concern. Coach Miles will have my support if he is retained. If he is replaced, the new coach will have my support. I do retain the right to be critical of poor play, poor decision making and poor effort in either situation. May the Huskers have some good fortune before the season ends and a better shooting eye.2 points -

This. This seems to be the elephant in the room. We lost Copeland. Huge huge loss. We still have what some have said is an All-Big 10 player, a 4 year starting PG, a JR who some say could go in the early 2nd round of the NBA draft, and a soph who was one of the highest rated recruits of the Nebrasketball era. We have the horses, but the horses also have to want to run. I will be the fist to admit that it was NCAA or bust for me this year. I have supported Tim for his entire tenure, just as I did with Doc and just as I will do with the next coach. However, this year was supposed to be different. This was the first year where I didn't just "want" to dance, I expected it. Many of you know that I am a huge optimist. Why anyone would want to go through life thinking the "worst" is going to happen vs thinking the "best" is going to happen is beyond me. But there also comes a point where even the most optimistic person starts to get a feeling in their stomach. I am at that point. This weekends game becomes huge for me now. Lose at Illinois, and the wheels will have completely fallen off. Right now, we have a major problem... we have a flat tire in the last leg of a long race. But, we're not for sure how to drop the spare right now and we are getting passed by all of the other competitors. We need that spare and we need it now. We need that spare by Saturday. I was in the boat of people who were disappointed, but not completely worried about our first three conference losses to Minny, Maryland, and Iowa. Yes, those losses were games that we had in hand, but they were losses to the upper 10 teams in the Big 10. We had plenty of opportunities left. However, those games meant that you could not afford to lose at Rutgers. You can't afford to drop both home games to OSU and Wiscy, and you can't afford to lose the upcoming games at Illinois and PSU. We just can't afford many more losses right now to accomplish what I want. Add to that, we lose Copeland, and that makes those games huge now. However, I think it is unfair at the time to say "these will come back and bite us" because we still had our "easiest" portion of the conference schedule to come. We are now 0-3 in that "easy" portion. Finally, there comes a point where the players are just going to have to want "it." We can sit here and Tim Miles this and Time Miles that all day. However, I competed in athletics growing up and until around the early college years. In addition, I coached both youth and high school teams in various sports. I know, for me, that I get pissed at losing. At some point I feel that the players have to get pissed, and play hard. We have to start doing the little things right. We need to make our easy bunnies, make our free throws, and do what we do best. We haven't been doing that the last four games. It's showing. I know some on here will probably comment the old "Well Tim just needs to get them to where they can succeed" and the like. I'm not going to completely disagree with you. However, those in the boat of "This is completely Tim's fault" I will disagree with. This is a full on TEAM losing streak right now. This isn't on any one man or coach. We need buy in these last 10 games. We have a 7th year coach and a decent starting 5. We can do it if we want. I would feel decent heading into the Big 10 tourney with 19 wins. @Illinois, vs NW, and @PSU are all games we HAVE to win now. Can we find three more wins vs Maryland, @Purdue, vs Minny, vs Purdue, @MSU, @MU, and vs Iowa? This team still could I think. Running that simulation on the Big 10 generator puts us around at 8 seed and playing Minny. Sorry for the book. I just don't want to give up on this team quite yet. Why would you? This is the best team we have had in years. OU was 16-11 and 6-9 overall with a 7 game losing streak last year. They finished 8-10, lost the first game of the conference tourney, and made it with an 18-13 record. They made it. So can we.2 points -

hsker4life: I read your longer statement above and agree so much! Thank you for your post. " We have the horses, but the horses also have to want to run." "I just don't want to give up on this team quite yet. Why would you? This is the best team we have had in years." My brother recruited by Harry Good (only conference championship won by NU) and played for Jerry Bush as did I. (won't talk about those win/loss records!) Followed and been involved with all 8 coaches since that time. My only comment at this time as we go thru this unexpected pain coincides with hsker4life . Our biggest problem in our down efforts is desire and "want-to". I strongly believe that with the talent we have - if they all - each individually - had the constant "get after them" internal drive of Benny Parker we would probably be undefeated!! You may disagree - but I truly believe that. I like Tim - his coaching style - his personality - what he does to front the University. But he can do whatever he can to instill - encourage - demand that the boys have the all out inner desire and effort - but when it comes down to it - it has to be in the inner selves and the chemistry and combined determination of the team players themselves.1 point

Apropos of nothing, Pat Chambers is not making $900K. That's the last reported figure from when he was first hired (and regurgitated in 2013 because Pennsylvania's Right to Know laws don't cover coach salaries). He signed a new contract last year, but the salary number isn't available -- but I would bet (900K) dollars to donuts that he's had a raise of some sort in 7 years. These last 10 games are a referendum on Nebrasketball’s future. The early work was done to get good enough “metrics” to make the tourney, but this team’s resume only consists of these games and the BIG tournament in the committee’s eyes. Fail and the only way to get that first win is to play the same dirty recruiting game as everyone else. Miles is respected enough in the coaching circles that any coach wanting to improve his career trajectory the right way will not come here. To paraphrase Bud Kilmer, every 40 minutes of these last 10 games need to be played like it’s the next 40 years of your life. James - your last name is Palmer, not Harden. Just be that guy from last year, we need nothing more than that. Glynn - You said before the year you wanted to make your impact on Nebrasketball history. Well, now is the time. We can’t win with you and Palmer going 3 of 98 on bad shots because you force everything. Roby - Wisconsin was a good start but we still need more. No more dumb fouls. Tanner - You’re getting a root canal after every game. Enough said. Thor - For Vahala or whatever inspired you to play like that, keep it up. Tom - Creighton wasn’t a fluke. You’re going to be the man next year so start it now. Finally Tim - Make these guys believe they are a better version of the gritty teams you used to coach. Sorry for another long-winded post but this season has really gotten to me. I have a separate bank account full of “traveling to see the first win” money. This was a year I believed and I hope the team decides to sooner than later.1 point -

Here is the reality. We are a bottom 5 Power conference job. We have no recruiting base, no tradition. We have good facilities, but that is a pretty bow on a pig. So, if a non hoop nerd has heard of him, he's not coming here If he's coaching in a power 6, he's not coming here. If hes coaching a higher mid major, he's not coming here. Some of the names bandied about here are ludicrous. I'm not saying its not time for a change. But if we are changing, were going to end up with a low to mid major up & comer, a retread with baggage trying to restore his reputation, or a power conference assistant.1 point
