  1. Tim Miles will be our coach next year.

  2. I get that eventually you have to perform but the whole spin the coaching wheel in hopes of something better often leaves programs on a hamster wheel I feel like. Who knows the next guy you get might struggle to draw up an inbounds play when you are up 3 with 0.8 seconds left?

  3. Oh my, here it comes. The annual "if we just throw enough money at them they will come" posts. No, Jay Wright is not coming here. Ever. Warren Buffet could unload his bank account and Jay Wright is not coming here. Triple his salary and he is. not. coming. here. And Martin and Lue and Hoiberg aren't coming either.

  4. Here's where it probably stands. If NU makes the tournament and wins a game, Miles gets offered a 4 year extension. If they makes the tournament and don't win, there's probably a 2 year extension. If they make the NIT and make a run in it, a 1-2 year extension. If they make the NIT and lose first round, there's about a 50% chance Miles is fired, otherwise there's either no extension or 1 year. If they don't make the NIT, there's a 100% chance he's gone. If you run off a guy even after a halfway successful season it makes the coaching search much more difficult; it's a lot easier after a season that's a disaster. Nebraska has only actually fired two basketball coaches in the last 50 years, after Danny Nee went 11-19 in his fourteenth year and Doc Sadler went 12-18 in his sixth. Moe resigned right ten seconds after the first all-time NCAA tournament game, whether or not he would have been fired anyway is an open question. Barry Collier left to be the Butler AD, he more than likely would have been let go after the next year. Next year there are some promising pieces - Roby, Green, Allen, Burke - but it's far from a complete roster at this point. Remember 3 years ago when we had Shavon Shields as a senior, with AWIII and Tai Webster as juniors? Those were some pretty damn good players. We went 16-18. To re-iterate the importance of winning a tournament game this year for Miles, here are the only coaches from schools currently in the top six conferences who won their first NCAA tournament game after their seventh year at the school, since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1986. Coach School Year of First Win Leonard Hamilton Miami (FL) 9 Leonard Hamilton Florida State 9 Mike Montgomery Stanford 9 Richard Williams Mississippi State 9 Jim O'Brien Boston College 8 Bruce Parkhill Penn State 8 For the same conferences and time frame, here are the only coaches that lasted 10 years or more without winning a tournament game. Coach School Years Danny Nee Nebraska 14 Bill Carmody Northwestern 13 Here are the only coaches in the top 6 conferences with a tenure longer than 6 years with no NCAA tournament win. Coach School Years Pat Chambers Penn State 8 Tim Miles Nebraska 7 I hope Miles gets it done: a few more five year rebuilding plans and my metabolic processes will be of interest only to historians; i.e., I'll be too dead to care.

With the angst and hand wringing going on, it is time for some good news. James Palmer, Jr. has made the top 25 list for the John Wooden Award that is presented to best college player each year. Think about it...James is considered one of the top 25 players in the country. CONGRATULATIONS James!!!!

  6. Can you imagine the local media/fan reaction to the coach if NU nearly blew a 10-pt lead mid-way thru second half, gave up 50+ points to an opponent on our home floor, but inbounded the ball successfully with 0.8 seconds left to survive and win by 3? It would feel like and be discussed like a loss ... and rightly so. Now throw in completely botching the inbounds pass with 0.8 seconds left, miraculously allowing the game to get to OT, and then losing it, all at home? The local media would roast Miles ... and rightly so. A once-in-a-generation debacle of a loss. But the local paper told me this morning that "CU didn't quit" and played great D to hold Howard to 53 and how Greggy took responsibility, so it's OK. Dude must've invested that $100K Bowen turned down in Teflon.

  7. My fandom for Nebrasketball runs very deep and hiring the likes of a Pitino/Wright/Martin or anyone that appears to place winning above everything and all rules would have me seriously questioning my loyalty to the program and University. As many have said, in Timmy I trust and I fully expect Miles to be around for the long haul after we pick off multiple wins in the tournament and erect.a statue of him outside of PBA. When we beat Penn St. tomorrow and eventually pick off a high quality road win (it will happen, keep the faith), these non sensical conversations and debates on our next coach will hopefully end!

  8. Marquette made a lay-up with 0.8 seconds left. Creighton throws it the length of the court, but forgot to touch the ball. Marquette inbounded under their own basket. Drained a 3 just as the buzzer sounded to force OT.

  9. If we call Dana there will be 6 seats open and I will never watch us again. Turgeon if he is around, just me. Really don't care because nobody is going to ask me, and we are going to get things going here starting tomorrow. And I am scared if we do win an NCAA game because that would mean I have seen it all.?

  11. No way, and it's not even close, IMO. Top-5 JuCo would probably equate roughly to a Rival's 150 type HS recruit. Maybe ESPN 100. Maybe.

  13. Stopped reading after the warning, great idea adding that btw. I'm enjoying the season, hope we are peaking at the right time. I think a win tomorrow will be good for the Nebrasketball psyche.

  16. Unless we pull a one and done kid in by April who we have for recruits won't and shouldn't matter for what happens with Miles long term as any new guy sure as Sunday needs to be able to recruit. This was the answer during the entire off-season and it's still the answer after any losing streaks or tough losses we might have during the season.

    Creighton/Marquette

I coached my inbounder in a seventh grade game to hand the ball to the defender. We were down 30 in the second quarter and they were pressing full court. My kid gave theirs the ball, and I turned to the other coach and said, "We can do this all day." He pulled the press. We still lost by a million, but at least a game happened.

  19. That is a hard NO on both and I'd throw Dana into that mix as well. Martin and Altman are both dirty and we don't need that here. I don't want to win that badly.

  23. This is a good point. It’ll take a complete collapse to miss the dance this year. These last two games you should only be really disappointed if you were hoping for a top 3 seed and making it easier on ourselves. With that being said, we should make the dance and a top 4 seed isn’t even out of the question with the schedule we have left. It’ll take a lot of wins and that means winning on the road. It’s something we haven’t done this year. But we’ve made it that much harder on ourselves with a 1-3 start. We we also have the Big 10 tournament that we could gain some more quality wins in. Hell... we could win that thing. The season isn’t lost. Not even close. We’ve said this whole year that we need to enjoy the ride. The ride wasn’t going to be smooth for 31 straight games. We can do this.

  24. If we can be patient for approximately another 36 hours, 23 minutes and 20 seconds, we should be able to exhale and regroup as a collective fanbase. Hopefully the number of pitchforks out and about drops as well.

  26. A. I wanted Miles fired after year 5. That being said, I'm hoping it doesn't come to that. Would much rather see us win and have him earn the extension B. If he is fired after this year, it's warranted. Because that very likely means we missed the NCAA, again. And there is no excuse for that with the talent we have on this team. C. If he is fired, it isn't a guarantee that those players are gone, only possibilities. D. Yes, it's worth the risk of losing those players. If Miles can't win with this team, there's not much reason to believe he's going to win with any other. Which means, you have to cut ties. And a good coach is worth more than 1 recruit.

    Trivia Question fun

Your point is well made and I bow to it! We lovers of the NL "senior circuit," however, prefer to date it from those halcyon days of '69 and no amount of facts can change our minds Interestingly, some early games didn't make it to 9 innings because of blue laws that prevent playing baseball on Sundays. They played, anyway, but the police often ran the teams out of town for it. Sometimes, however, the police allowed themselves to be "captured" by the crowd and forced to watch the game to the end. It must have been a glorious time!

  28. I disagree. Top 5 juco probably equates in skill and ability to a Rivals 4-star. Maybe even high 4-star. They get to campus older, more mature, and more physically ready than a high school kid. Many times, it takes them a full semester or more to really get their feet underneath them and adjust to the next level (which I expect will probably happen with Jervay next season.) But if you land a top 5 juco recruit, you're going to be getting a probable day-1 starter. And that's what I expect from Jervay.

    Trivia Question fun

Ooooo.... Oooo... I know this... Nebraska: Omaha will see the Royals and Tigers play this summer. At least this is how it is being billed. However, I believe this is technically an error. In the late 1800s there was a game featuring two MLB teams -- one of them being the Cincinnati Red Stockings and the other a now-defunct group that I don't recall -- played in Nebraska City.

  36. Creighton should have just bounced it under the Marquette basket. Even if Marquette gets the ball they have no time to get a 3 off.

  37. Heck 15 million is triple Steve Kerr’s salary why go after an NCAA champion when you could have a world champion. If we end up with Jay Wright I’m just going to stop watching. Kerr or Tyron Lue’s team could beat Jay Wright’s team 100 times out of 100.

  39. I was just asking didn't mean to ruffle your feathers. Like I said, I'm hoping it doesn't come to that. So that is the conundrum Moos faces. Hire another smaller program coach and save money or go after a big name and offer lots of money? The reason I brought up Wright and Martin was because I was surprised at their salaries. And guessing behind the scenes there have been overtures made to Wright to take over other programs for a substantial raise since he has 2 championships to his credit. I'd just as soon concentrate on this season and this team with Miles coaching.

I have looked up the rosters that Coach had at SDU and the first year that she was there she 15 players 12/13, then the next year she had 14 -13/14, she had 13 in 14/15,and in 15/16 she had 15. whic was her last year at SDU.

  42. Where have you been all this year!?!? Life just hasn’t been the same without you. I’ve missed you. No one to downvote... no posts to laugh at because they are so crazy... has our bar for this really increased to two losses in a row instead of every loss? Do better KMan.

  43. I know this is Nebrasketball and we’ve never won a ncaa tourney game....but our goal should be higher than that with this group no? I will be disappointed if we don’t get the monkey off our back this year. Barring a pretty large collapse it should be a given that this team goes dancing. Just have to hope for some good matchups come March.

  45. Head coaches, yes. Assistant coaches, sometimes. (At Nebraska they're paid pretty well, but at other schools that isn't always the case.) Operations staff, not so much...but when the HC goes, generally so does the entire staff. It's part of the game, to be sure, and that's a known risk, but those guys aren't paid any differently than most everyday folks and get the boot too. Just...food for thought. I've known a few of them over the years, and that can be kind of a rough deal. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

Egregious call when they failed to call the over the back foul on the rebound resulting in MD burying a Trey. Make-up call was allowing Maddie to travel (& missed shot by Maddie at the other end) except MD gets to keep the Trey that they made off the missed call.

And Tim Miles has done it for multiple weeks across multiple years in his stint at Nebraska. Kind of puts things into perspective.

  49. Okay, so just to clarify... The players who left the program and improved over their time at Nebraska did so without any help from Tim. The players who left the program and did not improve over their time at Nebraska did so because of Tim.
