  2. Here's where it probably stands. If NU makes the tournament and wins a game, Miles gets offered a 4 year extension. If they makes the tournament and don't win, there's probably a 2 year extension. If they make the NIT and make a run in it, a 1-2 year extension. If they make the NIT and lose first round, there's about a 50% chance Miles is fired, otherwise there's either no extension or 1 year. If they don't make the NIT, there's a 100% chance he's gone. If you run off a guy even after a halfway successful season it makes the coaching search much more difficult; it's a lot easier after a season that's a disaster. Nebraska has only actually fired two basketball coaches in the last 50 years, after Danny Nee went 11-19 in his fourteenth year and Doc Sadler went 12-18 in his sixth. Moe resigned right ten seconds after the first all-time NCAA tournament game, whether or not he would have been fired anyway is an open question. Barry Collier left to be the Butler AD, he more than likely would have been let go after the next year. Next year there are some promising pieces - Roby, Green, Allen, Burke - but it's far from a complete roster at this point. Remember 3 years ago when we had Shavon Shields as a senior, with AWIII and Tai Webster as juniors? Those were some pretty damn good players. We went 16-18. To re-iterate the importance of winning a tournament game this year for Miles, here are the only coaches from schools currently in the top six conferences who won their first NCAA tournament game after their seventh year at the school, since the tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1986. Coach School Year of First Win Leonard Hamilton Miami (FL) 9 Leonard Hamilton Florida State 9 Mike Montgomery Stanford 9 Richard Williams Mississippi State 9 Jim O'Brien Boston College 8 Bruce Parkhill Penn State 8 For the same conferences and time frame, here are the only coaches that lasted 10 years or more without winning a tournament game. Coach School Years Danny Nee Nebraska 14 Bill Carmody Northwestern 13 Here are the only coaches in the top 6 conferences with a tenure longer than 6 years with no NCAA tournament win. Coach School Years Pat Chambers Penn State 8 Tim Miles Nebraska 7 I hope Miles gets it done: a few more five year rebuilding plans and my metabolic processes will be of interest only to historians; i.e., I'll be too dead to care.

Man our defense is pretty bad. On-ball defense allows straight drives to the basket; and help-side is slow to rotate. We also give up a ton of 3's (to all teams) because they're not disciplined enough to see ball and the girl they're guarding. It's very frustrating to watch. We're not a consistent high scoring team so we've got to play harder, smarter and tougher on defense, bc it would create a lot more transition offense. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

  6. I think maybe the Minnesota game and not going to zone probably cost them the game. Other than that I agree, he's done a decent job. We desperately need a win over PSU. (basically need to play like Creighton). We have a chance to reel off 7 straight wins after that. @ Indiana is a winnable game (much like Maryland), MSU is a winnable game at home. @ Rutgers I will be disappointed if we lose. OSU and Wisconsin at home should be wins. @ Illinois like Rutgers will be disappointed in a loss. Maryland at home should be a win. Heck, even @ Purdue is a winnable game. Then, we get Minnesota and Northwestern at home. @ Penn State, another disappointment if we lose. Purdue at home is winnable. About the only 2 games left, @ MSU and Michigan will be super tough. Iowa at home should be a win. 12 - 4 in that stretch is very achievable. 23 - 8 with a win in the Big 10 tourney (24 - 9) gets us a 3, 4, or 5 seed in the dance. It all starts with playing well against PSU tomorrow night.

  7. Is this thread supposed to be Clemson-ass, or should it be Clemson-esque? So like "Get your Clemson-ass turnovers out of here!" Or "The way they turn the ball over is Clemson-esque? Asking for a friend who's been wondering for two days.

  8. Unless we pull a one and done kid in by April who we have for recruits won't and shouldn't matter for what happens with Miles long term as any new guy sure as Sunday needs to be able to recruit. This was the answer during the entire off-season and it's still the answer after any losing streaks or tough losses we might have during the season.

  9. Where have you been all this year!?!? Life just hasn’t been the same without you. I’ve missed you. No one to downvote... no posts to laugh at because they are so crazy... has our bar for this really increased to two losses in a row instead of every loss? Do better KMan.

  10. Excellent observation. And once that new coach is hired, don't forget the group that rushes to be first to say "this guy will never work here" or some variation. Then when the coach eventually is fired or leaves, they can brag about how they were the first to jump off the bandwagon, they always knew this would result in failure, etc, etc. The crowing over eventually "being right" isn't as ground-breaking as they may think though, since 90%+ coaches get fired or leave for another job. I mean I could say I knew from the start that Iba, Nee, Collier, and Sadler would all fail here and I'd have been batting 1.000. No matter how this season finishes, the odds of Miles retiring from NU on his own terms in a decade or so are incredibly small. The odds of eventually being right about a coach failing are nearly a lock ... even if it takes several years, I guess. Just a strange way to go about being a fan.

  14. Our effort tonight was good but Maryland was so much quicker that they did not allow very many uncontested shots. Our easy shots came in transition. We needed to shoot threes at the rate Maryland did tonight and they like us for a chance at victory. We have no one like Charles and their Freshman guard was the best Freshman on the court tonight. Their Jimmysand Joes were better than our X’s and O’s. The Terps are a cut above us athletically.

Absolutely correct. Our defense has continued to not be consistently good. Seems to be something the kids are not understanding ...fundamentals about how to play defense. Who's the defense guru on staff ?

  18. Twitters real nice for following guys like robin washut and Jacob Padilla who have inside info on the program and recruits. It however is real shitty for getting people’s uniformed opinions of the basketball program. The season might go up in flames but it ain’t there yet contrary to what twitter will tell you.

  19. And there is a middle ground as well. One can be concerned about the future of this staff, and thus the recruits, without engaging in bashing. Everyone and his dog knows how precarious the situation is, and we really got off to a bad start in league. Some flaws are apparent. It may turn out OK, and it may not. But the hole has been dug. I'm not doing any bashing, but I won't waste energy getting excited about next year when the whole thing could get blown up. Xavier Johnson is a perfect example of that. The good news is that this board has been pretty measured compared to others. True bashing has been a minimum in my opinion; the supporters still outweigh the critics. And even those considered bashing are pretty respectable and mature by message board/social media standards. God bless HHC. And while we're seeking blessings, I call for a lifting of the curse.

  20. No...they won't be happy with Tim's replacement either. *edited to add* They will be happy for about a week after the announcement is made that Miles is no longer coach at NU...participating in threads about who his replacement will be. Constructing lists of all the hottest names in basketball. Hot up and coming mid-major coaches that made a deep tourney run as a cinderella...hot assistant coaches at blue blood programs...NBA coaches fired or on the hot seat. All the usual suspects that have absolutely no interest in coaching at Nebraska for any number of good reasons. Talking about checkbooks and how far to open them, the lot. Then when the announcement is made regarding the new coach at NU and it's inevitable disappointment they'll go back to being unimpressed with the hoops program, and just waiting for the team to lose so they can make posts about how the coach fails to develop players and they don't run an offense or whatever jibber jabber they think makes them sound like they know what the hell they're talking about.

  22. Here is the deal in my mind. Character of a kid is important. Work ethic for a kid is important. Talent matters. So with those three statements, it isn't really a coach that "develops" a player. It is up to the coach to provide the platform and foundation for a kid to improve his/her game. A kid can study his game, see the areas that need refinement and improvement and then work toward making the necessary adjustments. There are hundreds of "trainers," "coaches" and others that say they can assist a kid, but it takes a kid who wants to make the necessary changes, and is willing to put in the work. This coaching staff seems to provide the platform and foundation. They have brought in a number of kids who appear to have the talent and the wherewithal to improve their games. I have had a number of debates over the years as to what makes up a great coach. What are the traits that have established Wooden, Coach K, Knight, Auerbach, Riley or Jackson as a top level basketball coach. Coach Miles, like any coach, has flaws. The question then is, what does he do or who does he hire to offset those flaws? And as important, does he let those individuals do their thing to help hide those flaws? One last thought, it is easy to opine for or against a coach. Heck, I am hearing today about all the flaws that Coach Saben has...really??? Tom Osborne was almost ran out of town on a rail, as was Devaney? I like Miles as a coach. Heck, I liked Doc as a coach. I look at the talent we now have, I look at the talent coming in next year; it seems as if this program is going the right direction. I guess if you attend games on the road, or travel with the team, you are more informed then me, but I am still all in on this team. I am impressed with the character of the kids, their work ethic and the talent I am watching. I am still convinced, despite a few bumps in the road, that we are going to the NCAA tournament, will win at least one game in the tournament and are a team nobody will want to face in the last third of the season. Again, it is just my humble opinion.

  23. A common trend that I see, not just on this board, is that players get praised for wins at Nebraska and the coach gets chastised for losses. It's actually a head scratcher really. And then on top of all of that, when a coach does get praised, it's an assistant who drew up a play or had the scout on the game, etc. Tim's in a lose/lose situation with some people. Honestly don't know if those people would ever be happy...

  26. I lived in Mpls for 25 years and my first encounter with Twitter was at the Twins games. There was a ribbon board in the outfield that would run and endless stream of "tweets" throughtout the game as people commented on the action on the field. I told my buddy, "Why do I care what every dumba** up and down the street has to say about a game I'm watching right in front of me"? Thankfully the Twins have ended that practice, but my feelings regarding Twitter haven't changed

  27. Some big ones tonight on tap for us... 6 PM- OSU @ Rutgers-- Need OSU in this one. Want them as high as possible when we beat them at PBA. 6 PM- Marquette @ Creighton-- Need Creighton to continue to hold serve at home and make that win look as good as possible. Quad 1 win isn't out of the question. 7 PM- Clemson @ Syracuse-- Road wins are gold as we know. Could really use Clemson to pick up a solid road W. Would be a double win for us as that would knock down the Cuse a little bit. 7:30 PM- Butler @ Seton Hall-- Need the Hall to rebound and keep that win looking good. 8 PM- Iowa @ NW-- Really need the Hawks to continue winning now. We have the chance to avenge our three losses in conference at home. 11 PM- Cal State Fullerton @ Hawaii-- Some Big West after dark action. Could use CSF to pick up a few wins. Other games of note ASU @ Cal in the Pac 12-- Could use a Cal win and make that conference even more likely to be 1 bid. 9 Top 25 matchups (10 teams in action with TCU vs KU)... Of those 10 Top 25 teams playing tonight... 7 are on the road. Could be some shakeups as we know road wins are tough in conference play.

  28. This is a good point. It’ll take a complete collapse to miss the dance this year. These last two games you should only be really disappointed if you were hoping for a top 3 seed and making it easier on ourselves. With that being said, we should make the dance and a top 4 seed isn’t even out of the question with the schedule we have left. It’ll take a lot of wins and that means winning on the road. It’s something we haven’t done this year. But we’ve made it that much harder on ourselves with a 1-3 start. We we also have the Big 10 tournament that we could gain some more quality wins in. Hell... we could win that thing. The season isn’t lost. Not even close. We’ve said this whole year that we need to enjoy the ride. The ride wasn’t going to be smooth for 31 straight games. We can do this.

  29. Won't disagree that they were closer to PFs than a traditional center. Main point here...Jordy isn't/wasn't good. I think Borchardt is better than Jordy. But we needed to have someone better than Borchardt to take those minutes.

  30. Head coaches, yes. Assistant coaches, sometimes. (At Nebraska they're paid pretty well, but at other schools that isn't always the case.) Operations staff, not so much...but when the HC goes, generally so does the entire staff. It's part of the game, to be sure, and that's a known risk, but those guys aren't paid any differently than most everyday folks and get the boot too. Just...food for thought. I've known a few of them over the years, and that can be kind of a rough deal. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

Help on the dribble penetration was waaayyy tooooo sllooowww. Thus the guards playing undisciplined, left open shooters. Long story short we burned inside, outside and lets be honest Miss Charles was going to burn us on the mid regardless, she is that good on the pull up.

Statistically we hanged with Maryland quite evenly almost across the board; Number of shots taken, Rebounds, Steals, Blocks, Assists, & Turnovers, even out rebounding Maryland 38-37. Good Effort, Ladies (Grit; No Quit! ) But we left far too many points on the floor from missed lay-ups and open-looks throughout the game. Shooting percentages tell the story; FGs (51.6% vs 37.7%) and 3-pointers (58.8% vs 33.3%). Maryland made their lay-ups and open looks (some not so easy); we didn't. It could have been a different game had we made some of those early misses and maybe taken the lead a time or two.

Offensive execution seemed to digress as the game wore on (from our end). Over time as our program continues to grow hopefully we close that gap on the athleticism, hopefully with the next class.

  34. Here's some good news. We are still 15th in the NET. Here's our remaining games. Current NET in parenthesis. PSU 2 x (76) possible tier 1 road game @ indiana (20) tier 1 MSU 2 x (7) tier 1 x 2 @ Rut (135) OSU (29) possible tier 1 Wis (17) tier 1 @ Illinois (125) Maryland (32) possible tier 1 Purdue 2 x (22) tier 1 x 2 Northwestern (56) @ Michigan (3) tier 1 Iowa (35) possible tier 1 Minnesota (38) possible tier 1 We have a possible 12 games remaining with tier 1 teams. We have a good chance at going 8 - 4 in those games. That would give us 9 wins. Last year we had 0 tier 1 wins. We were 5 - 10 in tier 1 and 2 games. We have a great chance of having only tier 2 games remaining. PSU home game and Rutgers road game are only 2 games that would drop to tier 3. Let's say we finish 12 - 4. That would give us a 10 - 4 record in tier 1 and 2 games. We are 1 - 4 in tier 1 games and 3 -0 in tier 2. Right now, 4 - 4 in tier 1 games (5 - 8 overall) 6 - 0 in tier 2 games (9 - 0 overall) 14 - 8 in tier 1 and 2 games. Last year, we were 5 - 10, and 0 - 9 in tier 1.

if we'd done that, we'd be 3-1 instead of 1-3. We can't just ignore trends, either. We're not good in tight games on the road. And until there's a reason to believe that this is purely just bad luck as opposed to something more systemic, then just assuming miracle turnarounds doesn't seem wise.
