  1. Glynn Watson is going to go down as one of the best players in school history. With at least 20 games remaining in his career, he's on pace to finish in the top 10 in at least these categories: - Assists - Free Throw percentage (top 5) - Field goals made - Steals (top 3) - 3 pointers made - He's currently on pace to finish around 11th in scoring but an extended run or two in the post season could certainly help that cause. Still, the gap between 10th and 11th is pretty substantial. I don't think his impact is lost on most people here, but I think NU would be lost without him. I think it's easy for him to get overshadowed by JPJ, Cope and to a certain degree, the potential of Isaiah Roby, but GW is the engine behind it all. Let's make sure we appreciate what we've got while we've got it.

    What coulda been

On the last day of 2018, as I reflect on where our beloved hoops program is and how it's positioned going forward, I can't help but wonder what coulda been. If only our last AD had had his crap together, had the political capital to expend, and had listened to the basketball experts on the Nebraska Rivals message board and other Husker hoops message boards -- think about it -- we coulda been almost two years into the NEXT coach's rebuild and THAT MUCH CLOSER to hiring John Calipari or Mike Kryzyzyzawooski to be our next coach. Instead, we're limping along at 11-2, languishing at literally THE VERY BOTTOM of the AP top 25 rankings, and, unless we go damn near undefeated the rest of the regular season, it'll be 7 straight seasons under Tim Miles without a conference regular season championship. Don't they care about basketball?

As always Iowa is an offensive juggernaut and as always no respect for defensive play. We can get them, but I still think we are not quite seasoned enough to beat Gustafson and co. If stick together and keep learning/ playing roles we will be real tuff by seasons end. I think we only have a chance if Hannah shakes out of her funk and starts being Hannah. In the mean time I could not be more pleased with how Nicea has stepped up.

Stayed at 23 in Coaches poll, tied with Wisconsin. I wanted to get mad, but then decided we need to just win, baby, and it will all work itself out.

    New NET Rankings

Updated Quad Current Rankings: Not a huge change from 2 weeks ago, as there weren't a lot of games. Currently, the rankings say somewhere between 22 and 24 Quad1/2 games on our schedule. Looking at last year, Power-5 teams that had at least 10 Q1/Q2 wins nearly all ended up with a seed of 7 or higher. Only 3 didn't and they all were .500 or worse against Q1/Q2 teams, receiving seeds of 8, 9, and 10. So it's logical to think that getting to 10 Q1/Q2 wins almost certainly will equal a bid. According to NET current rankings, we have a 4-2 Q1/Q2 record right now with 17 more chances. So if we can get to 12 or 13 Q1/Q2 wins total (that'd be playing roughly .500 basketball the rest of the way) you'd think that'd be a minimum 7 seed with plenty of room to climb. We're up to #10 in NET rankings through yesterday. An oddity - RPI doesn't like our team (#37) but loves our schedule with 17 Q1 games total and 3 Q1 wins already. Probably another example of why RPI is such a bad metric compared to the much better options out there. Just for a weird comparison to last year, Kansas had 15 Q1 games played on selection Sunday, 'Nova and Virginia each had 13. UNC had 22. Michigan St had 7. Texas had 17, won only 6, and made the field as a #10 seed.

i'm interested in seeing the mershon/gustafson matchup when mershon enters. no doubt, she will get "schooled" but, mershon can bring some aggressiveness and if she can adjust to gusty should be interesting. wouldn't mind reading some other comments, but, i think mershon brings a little "RB factor" back to the huskers game. actually, both mershon and verbeek do---at least imo.

  9. biggest problem in the NBA isn't about Glynn. It's that there are a ton of guys 3-6 inches taller than you and 20-30 lbs heavier that can literally do everything you can do. so everything else being equal, you take the dude with the height. Watson is definitely going to play pro somewhere good. He's a helluva basketball player. I just don't see it in the NBA. When was the last time we had a starting 5 who will all have solid pro careers? I think that's amazing.

By my count, Sunday's game against Iowa will be the first game NU and their opponent were both ranked since playing the Fab 5 Michigan team in the Rainbow Classic on 12/28/1992.

    Season and BIG stats

Kate has shot only 7 free throws in 11 games. Verbeek has 31. Kate is so limited on offense but her defensive presence is needed. She is difficult to pass to because she isn’t very active getting to the ball.

I really hope he starts shooting the 3 ball better. His dribble drive will be off the charts if 5's have to challenge him hard on the perimeter!

  16. One reason that Isaiah is a key, is that on offense, he has to be covered on the perimeter. If Fernando does not step out, Isaiah could have an excellent offensive night. We shall see.

    Season and BIG stats

At our exhibition game my wife noticed that Kate looked slimmer. But as the game rolled on she also noticed that Kate seemed limited in her mobility. I have been watching her move in the games since and agree that she has not taken a step up in that area even after a year in the strength and conditioning program. She has trouble setting screens without getting called for a foul and when a pass comes in she has trouble moving into the right position to catch it. As someone noted earlier maybe she has developed chronic knee problems. Playing a long schedule in college plus high level practices is a lot different than High School. It seems to have taken a toll on her confidence. I hope the best for her as we really need her defense. She and A. Veerbeek compliment each other so maybe less minutes will help.

Iowa, last year was lacking in guard/forward scoring and relying on Gustafson too much. And it hurt them in both games.... that we won. From what I've heard they are trying to right their ship with more balanced scoring. Fully expect for them to be out for blood. They didn't take kindly to the BIG RED showing them how it's done. Will take full team defense to slow their scoring down. Didn't see them play this year. How deep off the bench do they play?

First I gat to watch a full game today.. Am going to say something that sounds stupid but will make sense in a second. We are better when we make our shots. I know that is kind of a duh statement, But, when we make shots our heads are in the game and we play harder.. When don't we start to get a helter-skelter thing going on.. I know that is how coach wants us to play, but I think she wants it to be a smart helter-skelter way of playing

  35. Have to give Coach credit. She has blended the freshman into the team, even though they could have sit the bench and learned. Got them ready to play from day one. Still maintain the increased depth (talented) is having it's affect on other teams. Run them out of gas ..or fouls them out. We definitely came alive (Nicea) in the forth. Hannah hit 3's . Maddie's short jumper has become deadly. Brown kept us in the game until we could get it together, and blow them out late.

  38. Yes another amazing 4th quarter!!! Maybe B1G play strategy is just play to the level of opponent for the first 3 quarters to wear them out and then put the burners on in the 4th Quarter... Another 4th Quarter that was fun to watch!!

  39. Great post, uneblinstu. Nailed it in all regards. If he can stay healthy and keep playing at this level all year, very good things could happen. He was always a tweener in my mind, but this year he really seems like a point guard. He is clearly a leader as well.

  41. Leigha needs to be best friends with nu strength coach Stuart. That is the ticket to her being a WNBA player. She has the skills but she needs to get way more athletic and explosive. She appears to want to be good so I hope she buys into the importance of that aspect. — I was a critic early in the season that nobody viewed themself as a roll player. Cudos to mershon for buying into that and focusing on defense rebounding and passing Her minutes and contributions have gone way up since she bought into that. — as a parent I hurt for Hannah because she is a good shooter in a major slump. It happens to every shooter at some point. Just stinks for her right now. Cool thing is we are 1-0 in conf and up at half with her not shooting well. Proud of her that she kept shooting when open and kept playing hard. I hope for her and NU that she pops out of it soon. I believe she will.

I think you can blame a lot of the negativity on all the pro sports in that area. When people get paid to play a sport, the fans demand production. I would imagine that's why the Bluejay message board is so hate-filled...
