    Playing as a team

Watch the highlight of Roby’s dunk against Seton Hall again. Great dunk but the best part of that highlight is Cope’s celebration. Watch the previous game’s highlight of Watson’s great double diving running the play down and getting the tip in play. We were like up 49 when he did that. You can see this team really celebrate each other’s success. I have zero worries about this team’s chemistry. I can’t even remember who said it but someone in the media described them as, “just a bunch of good dudes.

  2. #24 Nebraska Cornhuskers (3-0) vs Missouri State Bears (3-0) ** HALL OF FAME CLASSIC ** Date: Monday, Nov. 19, 2018 Time: 6:00 p.m. Arena: Sprint Center Location: Kansas City, Mo. Broadcast: ESPNU Link for Shot Tracker Live Stats Missouri St Head Coach: Dana Ford Location: Springfield, MO Conference: Missouri Valley Nickname: Bears Mascot: Boomer the Bear Last time out: Beat Stetson Shirt not to wear: Maroon, fur Opening Line: Nebraska by 14 Radio Listen: Will be tough to find this audio on stations that carry the Huskers and Kansas City football Players to watch: Keandre Cook The 6'5 Juco transfer is 2nd on the team in scoring and leads the team in rebounding. He's been extremely efficient against lower tier teams and will probably draw James Palmer to start the game on defense. Some Good Reading 10 thoughts on Dana Ford's first week as the Missouri State head men's basketball coach - A great primer on the team 3 Man Weave's Missouri Valley 2018-19 Preview - Great read on Dana Ford and what he's trying to implement. Webster is the pass first PG from Texas Tech who has been turnover prone. Wojcik is probably the 4 and Church the 5 as Church is a traditional center and a prolific shot blocker. You'll probably see minutes from Juco F Kabir Mohammed, shooter Ryan Kreklow, and Jan Wojcik, the other Wojcik. Miles Presser Three takeaways 1. We prepped for exotic stuff before leaving for KC otherwise we'll take it one day at a time 2. Shot Tracker stuff will be in use. Not sure if this will be an advantage for us. 3. We tried to recruit the Wojcik twins that play for Missouri St The Skinny: The Bears are rebuilding as they fired the under-performing Paul Lusk and replaced him with 34 year old Dana Ford who had some MVC assistant experience to go along with his 4 years at Tennessee St. Ford brings in a defense first uptempo philosophy but currently finds himself undermanned as four of his scholarships are in use by transfers needing to sit out. See, not everyone was granted waivers. Missouri St is going to try and pressure Nebraska much of the night so it will be interesting to see how aggressive we are bringing up the ball and who takes the lead should Watson be out of the game. The Huskers should have lots of open rhythm 3s and when you come into a game knowing that, you tend to believe they'll go in. Should Nebraska have a miserable night, the Huskers should be able to clamp down with their defense. Expect another night of poor shooting for the opponent and hopefully a game where we can rest the starters at the end. Prediction: Nebraska 86 - Missouri St 68 View full article

  5. Spot on, Dean. You have to put in the work so that you are not "thinking" when you are shooting in game circumstances, but trusting your mechanics and form. One of the trends I've noticed in the teaching of shooting mechanics is foot placement. Instead of lining up completely square (head on) to the basket, many popular shooting instructors are teaching kids to stagger their feet at 10 to 11 o'clock (for right-handed shooters, 1 to 2 o'clock for lefties) in relation to the basket. The reasoning behind this theory is that this set-up will naturally align your elbow and shooting hand towards the target, as well as take away a sight/line obstruction of your hands interfering with your eyes on the target during the shot. For an example of this watch Steph Curry and James Harden. I have bought in to this method, but whatever foot method is being taught, good shooters simply have to have their elbows and hands aligned towards the target at release. Perhaps a shot guru can work with Amir during the off season to work on making some fundamental mechanics changes.

  8. Youth girls start playing with a full size basketball in 5th grade. Boys don't use a full sized basketball until 9th grade. Its crazy. I've pleaded with our youth league to only use a 26.5 inch ball for boys and girls until junior high. They all look at me like I'm stupid, yet I am the one with the exercise science degree. Youth girls especially develop bad habits because they are using a full women's ball at too young of an age.

  16. Joe's KC BBQ (best BBQ in town by a mile, IMO) has opened a location in the KC Live! block across from Sprint Center earlier this year: https://www.countyroadicehouse.com/#1 They don't carry the full Joe's menu, but do have some of the greatest hits, like the burnt ends, Carolina Pulled Pork sandwich. No Z-Man though and their fries are different (not as good) as the original location. as an aside KC BBQ is a hotly contested topic of discussion here in town; people have had long protracted and heated conversations about what is the best. Really there are dozens of very fine BBQ joints in town, the best comes down to personal preference. In my case specifically, I was an evangelistic Jack Stack guy for years and years but eventually came around to Joe's. You probably won't feel bad about any BBQ place you choose to select if that's what you do, but for God's sake whatever you do, make sure you get Burnt Ends and a Strawberry pop when you go. You can get a really good pizza just across I-670 from Sprint Center at Homeslice: http://www.homeslicekc.com You can get a high quality steak at Anton's on the streetcar line just a few blocks away from the Sprint Center: https://antonskc.com Pierpont's in Union Station serves a pretty decent steak as well: https://www.pierponts.com An even better steak still (probably best in town) is at The Majestic: http://majestickc.com The Savoy Hotel has been renovated and re-opened as a boutique hotel and I've heard good things about their restaurant: https://www.thesavoykc.com There are many places to get a quality microbrew near the arena, I'll list a few here: https://www.breweryemperial.com http://www.borderbrewco.com https://www.internationaltaphouse.com http://www.doubleshiftbrewing.com http://www.beerknurd.com/locations/kansas-city-flying-saucer https://www.yardhouse.com/locations/mo/kansas-city/kansas-city-pl-district/8359 If you want more recommendos, or would like some info on specific specialties (French, Indian, Tex-Mex, Pizza, Vietnamese, etc.) let me know. I've got lots of experience eating and drinking in KC. ?

  17. Visited KC a few years back for a football game and we asked several locals about the best BBQ joint. We had several recommendations for both Gates and a place called Q39. We tried both while we were there and for my money, Q39 was some of the best BBQ I've ever had. It's a little pricier that Gates but it was well worth it. The meat fell off the bones and the sauce was awesome. https://q39kc.com/

  18. I did the same thing teaching youth basketball over the years. After being around the game all of my life, I didn't think there was much new to learn about shooting technique, but after doing research, watching training video and trying it out myself, I am now convinced. Interestingly, I had noticed over the years that I shot it much better with my right foot staggered forward, and now it makes sense why that was the case. Shows that even old codgers like me can learn something new.

  19. I teach the 10 o'clock to get the shooting shoulder in line with the basket, dip on the catch, shoulders back to get more arch so you don't go straight up and down on the jump shot, follow through is index finger to the thumb, one finger down - three fingers up, reach into the cookie jar but grab that cookie with your index finger. I was sold because I had already been doing some of this for myself but it pushed me over the edge when I was shown video of shooters who did this, Michael Jordan, Kobe, Chris Mullen, James Harden, Damian Lillard, Ray Allen, Larry Bird (toes at 9) and even the Big O and John Havlicek. I taught hundreds of kids a crappy way of shooting simply because that's what I was taught. I don't know about Tim Miles but I do know that Coach K and most D-1 coaches teach the 10 o'clock now.

  20. There is, actually, a study on this. Among its conclusions are that the best single predictor of NBA 3 point percentage is NCAA 3 point percentage, the second best is NCAA free throw percentage, but the best predictor of all is a combination of variables. Here's the actual language: "Of the individual variables, FT% had the second strongest correlation with NBA 3P%. Unsurprisingly (and for a somewhat unceremonious conclusion), NCAA 3P% had the strongest. But the different combinations generally were much stronger than any of the variables individually."

  34. I was honestly expecting more out of a team that did have Romeo and Morgan. I didn't think they looked very good. Romeo, as noted, didn't play very hard in my eyes. It doesn't take a few guys who are injured to get you to play harder. They are probably better than what they showed today, but today wasn't good.

    You heard it here first

I saw that play as well. I have to think AM was dinged up, as he didn't run after the first series or 2. Take Speilman and AM's runnng threat, as well as playing a very good defense and the weather, and it was going to be tough to score. We were just trying to manage it best we could. Reed's sack gave us hope and momentum that we could get it done. Fun day. If one dresses appropriately, it is totally manageable. Loved the snow. No matter what happens next weekend, the improvement in the program is palpable. The hand wringers from earlier in the season have been quiet.

  40. I don’t believe it is as quite as simple as Handy says, but it’s a big part. Actually the newest shooting guru’s don’t like the one-handed shooting. They feel it takes away from a natural one motion and puts a hitch in the shot. They want a high bounce so you have to do the footwork, catch, dip and then form shot hopefully ending in a swish. Regardless of what method is used, form shooting is a huge part of learning to shoot correctly and I’m sure Brady has done lots of it before. It just takes lots of continuous hard work. It’s more mental than physical work and if they are choosing to go through the motions they are not getting better. Many leagues use the junior ball and an 8 or 9 foot hoop to enable the younger players to shoot with proper form. The problem is kids imitating Curry by throwing up 3’s. So I don’t think all or most coaches are pressuring kids into playing like adults, the kids want to. Where I think coaches are letting the kids down is they allowing them to play that way without saying, “Stop .it” Players have always done whatever their coaches allow them. It’s not just the youngest, I officiated a summer league JV game where the two teams went 3 for 26 combined from behind the line. And some of them were way behind the line. You don’t need to be the real Dean Smith to tell kids to “knock it off,” and teach the concept of shot selection beyond “I have the ball and I’m now selecting to shoot it.” The three is is a very important part of today’s game but it takes lots of work to get to where that shot is effective. Many kids don’t want to do that work but that’s nothing new either.
